I homeschooled my kids for many years, yet I never really thought about that time with them ending. Some veteran parents say to begin learning at home with “the end in mind”, which is awesome advice that you should totally follow.

Our family has gone through a couple of monumental changes since my kids were born, though. And “the end” is looking very different than I would have ever imagined.

One of those changes was deciding to strongly encourage a university education for my kids. I didn’t parent them that way for most of their childhoods. Trying to course correct at a later age came with some…challenges.

In case any of you are also trying to navigate this adjustment during the teen years (or if you just want to learn from my mistakes), I wanted to share three tips for helping your homeschooled child prepare for college.

By no means are these the only three ways that will work, nor are they necessarily the best ways to approach this transition. But they worked for me. And they may work for you too!

Why the Idea of College Was Difficult for My Homeschooled Children

In our case, the very idea of college was novel. I didn’t raise my kids to grow up and go away to a university. We never talked about it in their young years and they didn’t know anyone who had a college degree either.

After my divorce, I decided to go back and get my degree in accounting. I graduated cum laude last fall, by the way.

Trying to get a college education while raising four children alone and holding down a full-time job was unbelievably hard. Probably one of the most difficult pursuits I’ve ever attempted.

I thought about my children and what life I wanted for them. I didn’t want them to miss getting their educations during youth and then try to go back and juggle everything later like I had to do.

This was a drastic u-turn for us. But finishing my degree helped me get a better job, which led to a better lifestyle for the kids almost immediately. They got to see the difference between having a college education and not having one – right before their eyes.

That helped a lot.

It was still an uphill climb, though, especially for my boys who are not fans of school in the first place.

3 Ways to Help a Homeschooled Child Prepare for College

1. Consider putting them in public school (for a while, at least).

Okay, I know this may be controversial, but hear me out.

My kids were homeschooled almost the entire time from birth through middle school. After Covid eased and schools started to open back up, I decided to send them to public school permanently.

Because our family life had been heavily structured around a strict religious belief system, they didn’t have much exposure to kids in the community and how they lived. Getting them into public school helped them become acclimated to people who thought and behaved differently from them.

Without that, the prospect of college would have been impossible.

If you can get that exposure for your kids without putting them in public school, awesome.

But enrolling in public school was a good decision for our family. So if you’re thinking about doing the same, don’t feel like a homeschooling failure by any means.

2. Take as many college tours with your child as you can.

This one is pretty simple. Start taking your kids on college tours as early as possible.

We’ve gone to several and I’ve taken my younger kids as well. The sooner they get used to the idea, the easier that adjustment will be with them as they reach high school age.

If I could go back and do anything differently, it would be to take this step earlier – probably around middle school.

3. Try a college experience stay-away camp.

This is fantastic for older kids. Find a college in your area that allows students to stay for a week and get the experience of attending class and living on campus.

My oldest son attended one this summer at the University of Georgia. All of the pictures in this post are from that camp.

He stayed in a freshman dorm with a roommate for the week and walked to class each day. He ate in the dining hall and had a RA in his dorm and everything.

It was a fantastic, eye-opening experience for him. And for me.

By the end of day two, he was barely calling me at all because he was so busy with the camp schedule and making new friends.

I guess I need to prepare for him going to college too, huh?

There are plenty of other things you can do to help your kids get ready for college, like inviting friends and relatives with college degrees to share their experiences, talking to people at your church who can mentor your kids, and more.

But if you have a little time to prep, you can also let them color in the blackline versions and create their own activity.

They can use the same colors to color their ornaments the same and different colors to color the different one on each row.

You could also print the answer key and cut the sections into strips. Place them on a ring for self-checking at math centers!

Or laminate them and let students use them with dry erase markers. That way, you can print and prep once and use them again and again.

When I was young, I grew up in a very small town with a train track. Hearing the sound of the train was a pretty common occurrence.

When I was a teenager, my father even turned our entire backyard into a model railroad layout. Honestly, that was a bit too far, but I digress.

I still love trains. And I thought this fun toy train paper roll craft would make a simple and fun transportation activity to share with all of you!

What You’ll Need to Make the Easy Paper Roll Train Craft

To make this toilet paper roll train craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are used below. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Colored craft paper
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Craft glue
• Toothpicks
• Toilet paper roll
• Printer (with ink)
• Printer paper
• A copy of the Toy Train Paper Roll Craft Printable Template

Once you’ve printed the paper template, use a pencil to trace the individual pieces onto colored craft paper. Then cut each piece out.

If you’re working with very young children, you may want to do this step yourself before you begin the activity.

After you’ve cut out all the pieces, you’re ready to go!

How to Make a Train Paper Roll Craft for Kids

Glue the body of the train around the empty paper roll to form the train chassis.

Use the end of the scissors to poke holes through the paper roll.

You’ll need a total of four holes – one for each train wheel. (This step should be done by an adult.)

Now it’s time to make the train “wheels”.

Glue the small circles onto the larger circles to form the wheels.

Attach a toothpick to the end of one wheel using craft glue.

Insert a toothpick through the hole on one end of the paper roll and push it through to the hole on the other side.

Attach the second wheel to the open end of the toothpick.

Do the same on the other side to form the second set of wheels.

Now, make two fold lines in the train “top” piece.

Glue the four smaller rectangles on each end – two on each side. These are the train “windows”.

Finally, you’ll make the funnel.

Fold the smaller cylindrical piece into a tube and secure the end with craft glue. Fold the top funnel piece into a circle and glue the ends together.

Glue the two pieces together to form the funnel.

All that’s left now is to glue the cabin and the funnel onto the train!

Such a cute train craft to make with little ones!

Easy Paper Bag Owl Craft for Kids

What I love about this fall craft is that you can make a LOT of them at once. So if you’re working with a class, this is a perfect craft to try.

• Printer (with ink)
• Printer paper
• Scissors (Note: If you are allowing students to cut out the template pieces themselves, use child-safe scissors)
• Paper bag
• Construction paper
• Craft glue
• Pencils

• Printable Owl Craft Template

You can really use any combination of construction paper colors. Browns, reds, and oranges are good for a fall theme, but real owls also come in black and white!

Choose a piece of construction paper for the owl’s body. Trim it to fit the paper bag.

After you’ve printed the craft template, use a pencil to trace the pieces onto colored paper.

Cut out the template pieces and you’re ready to get started!

If you’re making with craft with little ones, you can cut out the pieces in advance and make the project faster for them to finish.

How to Make a Paper Bag Owl

Begin by gluing the face onto the owl’s head.

Then add the eyes on each side and the beak in the center.

Glue the trimmed piece of construction paper onto the long part of the paper bag (under the flap). This will be the owl’s body.

Glue the owl’s head onto the paper bag flap.

Finally, add the wings and feet by gluing the wings onto each side of the paper bag and the feet onto the bottom edge.

Your paper bag owl is all done!

You can make an entire owl family by using different colors or by changing the faces a bit.

Printable Apple Letter Matching Puzzles

This set of letter matching activities includes 26 apple puzzles.

Each features an uppercase and lowercase version of the same letter.

After you’ve printed the puzzles, cut them apart for students to practice matching the letters to their partners.

How to Use Letter Puzzles to Build Literacy

These are perfect for centers or small groups. You can cut them out as one piece if you are teaching letter recognition.

This easy toilet paper racecar craft is perfect!

It’s simple, only requires a few supplies, and just plain cute too.

One of the books I grew up with was Richard Scarry’s What Do People Do All Day?. I’m sure many of you remember that one too.

What always caught my eye was all the cars and trucks that moved through the town every day. (I think Sergeant Murphy was directing traffic in one of the scenes.)

Transportation is still a great theme for early learners, which makes this racecar craft a perfect project to make with preschoolers and kindergartners!

Easy Toilet Paper Roll Racecar Craft

When you’re ready to make this craft, let your students choose what color they’d like. Any craft or construction paper works for this project.

To make this easy paper roll racecar, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are listed below. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Colored craft paper
• Cardstock
• Empty toilet paper roll
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Craft glue
• Washable markers
• Printer (with ink)
• A copy of the Toilet Paper Roll Racecar Craft Template

After you’ve downloaded the Toilet Paper Roll Racecar Craft Template, print it out on cardstock paper. Use scissors to cut out the template pieces. (You may need to print two to have enough stripes to decorate your car.)

Trace each of the template pieces onto the colored paper. Cut them out and you’re ready to get started.

If you’re working with multiple students, you may want to do this step in advance. Then the kids can get started right away.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Race Car

First, wrap the colored craft paper around the empty toilet paper roll. Use scissors to cut off the excess paper.

Secure the ends with glue.

Trace the rectangle from the template onto the toilet paper roll.

Cut the rectangle shape out on three sides, leaving the edge closest to the front in place. (This step is best done by an adult.)

Reach into the toilet paper to push the cut sides up. This forms the “windshield” of the car.

Cover the windshield with a piece of light blue craft paper. Glue it in place.

Trace the stripes onto craft paper and glue them onto the sides of the car.

Make the rear wing by tracing the wing template and shorter stripes onto craft paper. Glue the stripes onto the wing and attach to the back of the car.

Trace (or draw) the number template and glue it to the side.

Glue the wheels on and you’re done!

You might choose to have your class make an entire fleet of cars!

But many of us go back to school long before apple season. (Our district goes back during the last week of July.)

Sunflower Making Ten Playdough Math Center

To use this early math center, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are used below. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Printer (with ink)
• Printer paper
• Laminator (optional)
• Scissors
• Playdough

This resource includes ten sunflower addition circle cards – each displays a pair of numbers that equal a sum of 10.

There are also ten yellow ten frames inside.

You can print the resource with regular printer paper if you’re only planning to use it once.

But if you intend to reuse it (like most of us teachers do), laminate the cards and ten frames before you cut them out.

How to Use The Making Ten Playdough Math Center

When you’re ready to begin this activity, ask your class about how we add numbers to make ten. If they’ve never done it before, have them hold up all ten fingers.

Walk them through adding a couple of different numbers to make ten.

For example, you could say: “Hold up all ten fingers. We’re going to count out three together. As we count each one, put that finger down. 1-2-3.”

They should have seven fingers still extended. Use this to show that 3+7 = 10. Repeat with a few other combinations.

Now you can demonstrate the activity.

At the center, put down an addition circle card and a ten frame. Use two different colors of playdough.

Make enough playdough balls to represent the first numeral. Then use the second color to make playdough balls that represent the second numeral.

Show students how to count each group and then add them all up to make ten.

If you don’t have playdough, you can use just about any math manipulative you can think of.

Coins, buttons, stickers, math counters – even LEGO blocks or drawing circles with dry erase markers would work well.

Use scissors to cut out the pieces. Then lay them on construction paper and use a pencil to trace each outline.

If you’re doing this with several children, you can prepare the body pieces beforehand. Then students can simply assemble the craft on their own.

How to Make the Paper Plate Life Cycle Craft

This butterfly life cycle craft project features four stages: egg, chrysalis, caterpillar, butterfly.

Start by assembling the egg stage.

Glue the leaves onto the branch piece. Then glue the three “eggs” on top.

Now, move on to the chrysalis. Glue the chrysalis pod onto the lower branch, then attach the rounded corner on the left side.

If you like, you can use a marker to add ribbed lines along the right side.

Now it’s time to assemble the caterpillar!

Start by gluing the antennae and legs onto the body pieces.

Then use glue to attach the body pieces together and form the caterpillar.

Add a happy face with a marker.

We can finally make the butterfly!

Glue the wing sections onto the wing template. Then glue the body section in the center of the wing template.

Add a happy face to the butterfly.

Once you’ve assembled all four life cycle stages, it’s time to place them in the right order.

Start by cutting out a piece of construction paper to fit inside the paper plate.

This is a good point to talk with students and ask:

• Which stage is the first in the butterfly life cycle?
• After that, which stage comes next?

Proceed through the entire cycle and, once students have identified the correct order, have them glue the stages onto the plate.

And we’re done!

It’s a craft, a science project, and a fine motor skill strengthener – all in one!

8. Assemble the butterfly stage: Glue the wing sections onto the wing template. Glue the body section in the center of the wing template. Use a marker to draw a happy face.
9. Cut out a piece of construction paper to fit the center of the paper plate. Glue it down.
10. Add the life cycle stages to the paper plate in the following order: butterfly at the top, then egg stage on the right side, caterpillar on the bottom, and chrysalis on the left side.
