Love the Montessori method? Use it at home to teach math to your kindergartner!

Montessori Homeschool Kindergarten: ShillerMath Kit A

So how does ShillerMath go about teaching math to young ones? With the same, hands-on homeschool Montessori kindergarten approach. Unlike Language Arts Foundations, though, ShillerMath Kit A is designed for multiple ages in grades K-3.

I picked up a little basket to hold some of the manipulatives. Kit A has even more manipulatives than Language Arts Foundations, by the way.

Shiller Math Lesson Plan and Parent Guide

The program includes a grading binder and a parent guide, so if you’re totally new to Montessori (as I was), you can get an overview of the curriculum and how it works.

The binder has a few templates that you can use to keep up with the lessons that have been completed and your child’s grades as you go. Plus, there are reproducible printables that will help with learning arithmetic.

Shiller Math Kit A Lesson Books

As with Language Arts Foundations, ShillerMath Kit A has complete lesson plan books. Since the kit is designed for grades K-3, there are three lesson books. If you’re unsure where your child is, you can use the diagnostic tests to place them at the right level.

Here’s the table of contents for Lesson Book 1. We started at the beginning with our kindergartner.

See what I mean about it being ready to go out of the box? It is really, really easy to follow.

Working with Shiller Math Wooden Shapes

As the lesson directed, we started by exploring basic wooden shapes on the work mat.

After we identified them all, our little one spent some time coloring the correct shapes in the lesson book.

Counting Visually with Shiller Math

In another lesson, she got some counting practice by counting visually without numbers. The instructions asked her to color the correct number of shapes with a specific color, so it was a good exercise in counting and color recognition.

After a while, though, she was ready to get up and move. So it was perfect that the lesson told us to get up and try to make the shapes with our feet!

Outside we go! This is my little one making the shape of a heart with her feet. She loved it so much. I had to make her come inside afterward.

I also have to admit: Every day since we started this program, she asks me “Mom, can I do my ShillerMath today?” That’s how much she loves this program.

There is SO MUCH MORE to the homeschool Montessori kindergarten approach in ShillerMath Kit A and Language Arts Foundations! I couldn’t do it all justice in this post – or else it’d be way, way, way longer. But you can see everything that’s included in the unboxing video on my YouTube channel!
