How to Ask Questions in American Sign Language

ASL Lesson 10: How to Ask Questions in Sign Language

October 4, 2016 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

It’s been almost literally forever, but I’ve got another sign language lesson for you today! And it only took 365 days! This lesson is all about how to ask questions in ASL.

When you’re first learning sign language, using questions can be kind of awkward. First, they nearly always appear at the end of a sentence, which is weird to English speakers.

Example: “Where did you eat last night?”

In ASL, you would sign: “Last night, you eat where?” (Or something similar)

So it can be kind of strange using them. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll be signing questions all over the place! Read on to learn more about how to ask questions in sign language!

How to Ask Questions in American Sign Language

How to Ask Questions in Sign Language

This video includes a lesson in how to sign these common question words:

  • Who
  • What
  • Where
  • Why
  • When
  • How
  • What’s up

I also talk a little about how these question words are used. For example, “What’s up?” in sign language is often used as an informal greeting, just as it is in English. (“Hey! What’s up?) But it’s also used to ask for more information or for an explanation of a concept.

So you might see a sentence signed like this: “That book, what’s up?” – which means “What is that book about?” Or you might see this: “Before happen, what’s up?” – which means “Tell me about what happened earlier.” In English, “What’s up” is still considered slang, but it’s perfectly proper grammar in ASL!

Take a look at the video to see more about how to use question words in sign language!

Do you have any specific American Sign Language topics you’d like to learn more about? Give me some suggestions in the comments!

Learn how to use action words in Spanish with these printable English and Spanish verb flashcards!

Printable Spanish Flashcards: Spanish Verb Flashcards

July 5, 2016 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a new set of printable Spanish flashcards with you all, so I decided to get things going again with a set of Spanish verb flashcards!

Using verbs in Spanish is quite different than in English.

You have to conjugate (or change) the verb each time you use it so that it matches the person who is doing the action.

So, for example, the way you would say “I talk” is different than the way you would say “She talks”. In both of those phrases, the verb for “talk” would be different.

English and Spanish Verb Flashcards

Sound confusing? It can be, but I’m working on a resource to help with verb conjugation.

In the meantime, let’s get to know basic verbs with these printables!

How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

June 16, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

As you might be aware, we use Sign Language fairly often in our family. (For examples, see here, here, here, and here.) Many experts agree that the years from birth to age 5 are the prime years for introducing a foreign language to kids. But is it really possible to teach sign language to preschoolers?

Of course it is! Baby sign language has become extremely popular, so preschoolers are naturals as signing. But what does it take to teach ASL to very young children? Today I’m sharing a post I wrote for Learning 2 Walk that’s all about how to teach sign language to preschoolers!

Today is also another edition of the Laugh and Learn Linkup, so scroll on down to read our features from last week and the newest parenting and homeschooling posts!

How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

One of the biggest suggestions I can give to teach ASL to preschool-aged kids is to keep it extremely simple and relaxed. When young children have fun, they end up learning naturally! And there’s no reason why learning sign language shouldn’t be fun!

Multilingual Blog Carnival: Teaching about World Cultures

January 26, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I’m thrilled to be hosting this month’s edition of the Multilingual Blog Carnival! We’ve been teaching our kids American Sign Language and Spanish, but we’ve also gotten to try French as well.

However, one of the most important parts of learning another language is learning about the culture associated with it. For example, if kids learn American Sign Language without gaining an understanding of deaf culture, they can view ASL as nothing more than a novelty. If that happens, they can easily offend a deaf or hard-of-hearing person when they try to communicate.

So for this month’s Multilingual Blog Carnival, I wanted to focus on why and how we should be teaching about world cultures. There are several great suggestions for approaching a study of world cultures for kids and I’m excited to share them today!

Teaching about World Cultures

Suggestions for Teaching about World Cultures

Here are some great blog posts featuring reasons why we should teach our kids about world cultures and how we can do so! Be sure to stop by and show these great bloggers some love!

1. Marianna at Bilingual Avenue shares a great post for native multilingual parents about why they should retain their cultural connections and share them with their kids. We can even make language learning into a special bonding time with our little ones!

2. If we’re going to teach our kids to be multilingual, we can certainly start by teaching to appreciate the diverse nature of our world. Third Culture Mama shares her own experiences with neighbors and friends from other cultures and how she’s ensuring that her kids value and respect those differences.

3. Maria at Trilingual Mama has some great ideas for teaching our kids to respect international cultures, including making friends with other multicultural families, introducing kids to different cultures from an early age, and using Internet resources to teach foreign language and world culture.

Learn how to use Spanish verbs for to be with these free ser and estar flashcards!

Free Printable Flashcards: Ser and Estar Flashcards

January 6, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

¡Hola, todos! It’s time for another edition of our Free Printable Flashcards series!

This week, I’m sharing a free set of ser and estar flashcards, which are great if you’re learning español!

Ser and estar are very important verbs in Spanish, but it’s easy to confuse them. Although they have the same basic meaning, they are used in different settings.

Also, they are conjugated differently, so if you’re talking about yourself, you use one form of ser or estar and if you’re talking about someone else, you use a different conjugation for each one.

These printable Spanish flashcards are awesome for young ones (and adults) who are working on memorizing these basic Spanish verb conjugations!

Learning the difference between the verbs ser and estar is a huge stumbling block for a lot of Spanish students.

The problem is that both verbs literally mean “to be”, so it’s very easy to mix them up.

The trick is learning when to use each one, since they’re reserved for specific contexts and meanings.

If you’re unfamiliar with the usages of ser and estar, SpanishDict has a great primer you can use to learn the basics.

In the meantime, grab our free flashcards to learn how to conjugate each verb correctly for the appropriate pronoun, such as yo (I), tú (informal you), and nosotros (we).

The pack includes one set of flashcards featuring the Spanish forms of ser and their English equivalents and a second set of cards featuring the forms of estar.

There is also a set of blank cards with just the Spanish conjugations, which kids can use to memorize their English meanings.

What we did was laminate the ser and estar flashcards that included Spanish and English.

We left the set of just Spanish cards unlaminated, so the kids could copy down the vocabulary themselves.

ASL Weather Signs - Look! We're Learning!

ASL Lesson 8: ASL Weather Signs

September 17, 2014 by Selena Robinson 14 Comments

In keeping with the change of seasons, we’re sharing an American Sign Language lesson today that covers ASL weather signs! The video lesson also includes a primer on how to sign the seasons in ASL.

Learning to sign about the weather can really help you hold a conversation with a deaf or hard-of-hearing individual. After all, who doesn’t talk about the weather? And deaf people are no exception. Talking about the weather in your area is a wonderful icebreaker when you’re first getting to know someone who signs.

For more ASL practice, grab our set of free Weather ASL Fingerspelling Pages!

ASL Weather Signs - Look! We're Learning!

How to Use ASL Weather Signs

In this video, you’ll learn the signs for:

  • Spring
  • Summer
  • Fall
  • Winter
  • Weather
  • Rain
  • Flood
  • Ice
  • Snow
  • Storm
  • Lightning
  • Wind
  • Hurricane
  • Tornado

As you watch the video, you might see that facial expression and intensity play a huge role in the signs. For example, the sign “wind” changes in meaning, depending on how hard you sign it. It can mean a gentle breeze or it can mean a strong gust.

The same is true of “rain”. If you sign it softly, it means a shower. But if you sign it strongly, it can mean a storm or a downpour. Signing with intensity is the ASL equivalent of raising your voice. 🙂

ASL Lesson 7: ASL Opposite Words

August 27, 2014 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

It’s time for another edition of our American Sign Language lesson videos! This time, we’re learning about common opposite pairs in ASL.

One of the great things about learning ASL is that you can skip spelling and pronunciation and go straight to comprehension. When you look at ASL opposite pairs, you can kind of naturally “see” how they relate. Often, if you learn one word, you may be able to guess how to sign a word with the opposite meaning.
