It’s September, which means it won’t be long before we start to see leaves changing color and falling off the trees in our neighborhood.
I always look forward to the fall colors each year.
They’re beautiful to look at, but they also make a wonderful color recognition lesson – right from nature!
To help early learners get into the spirit of autumn, I thought I’d share this fun (and free!) leaf matching file folder game!
This is an easy, fun way to help early learners practice spotting same and different objects, recognizing colors, and following directions.

Roll A Leaf! Leaf Matching File Folder Game
To play this leaf matching file folder game, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)
- Printer (with ink)
- Printer paper or cardstock
- File folder
- Double-sided tape
- Glue stick
- Math counters or buttons or foam stickers (for game pieces)
To assemble the game, you’ll need to cut out the two game board pages, as well as the printable game die.
Assemble the die by folding along each line to form a curved shape.
Then fold the tabs in and stick them to the flat sides using double-sided tape.
This is a very easy file folder game for preschoolers to play.
You can use just about any small object for game pieces: math counters, foam stickers, buttons, coins, counting bears, etc.
Let children take turns rolling the die. Then they move their game piece to the square that is face-up on the die.
The first player to reach the END square or beyond wins!
