I am in the small group of people who actually enjoy solving arithmetic problems.

When I was young, I would doodle math problems in my notebook in my spare time.

My kids, though, aren’t big fans of arithmetic, unless I can make it fun.

So instead of just giving them a sheet of problems to solve, I put together a fun aquarium-themed lesson: our Aquarium Arithmetic Seek and Find activity!

Aquarium Arithmetic Seek & Find Math Activity

To use this aquarium arithmetic math activity, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are included in this post. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Printer (with ink)
• Printer Paper
• Crayons

This product includes eight sheets of addition and subtraction problems.

Once they find the corresponding problems, they can color them in!

For example, one of the pages instructs kids to “color the problems that have a difference of 5”.

So after kids solve the subtraction problems, they can go back and color in the bubbles for the problems that equal 5.

Easy!

A full set of instructions and a complete answer key are also included!

We’re about a month out for spring, but I’m ready for it NOW.

Like yesterday.

Today, I’m excited to share a brand new set of spring worksheets for kids: Flower Repeated Addition Worksheets that are perfect for early grades!

I’ve been working on the concept of multiplication with my boys this year.

Once you get the idea that multiplication is just adding groups of numbers rapidly, then it’s easier to understand how to solve multiplication problems.

And repeated addition is a big help in mastering that concept.

Spring Worksheets for Kids: Flower Repeated Addition Worksheets

This product includes two worksheets that display the concept of repeated addition.

As well as two worksheets that use the same flower groups to display basic multiplication.

The addition problems are fairly simple and only use numbers from 1 to 6.

There are problems that show 3 + 3 + 3, which is the same as 3 x 3, 5 + 5, which is the same as 2 x 5, and so on.

The multiplication worksheets are a wonderful introduction to multiplying for early grades!

And you can laminate them and use them with dry erase markers at math centers.

A complete answer key is also included!

One of the things I love most about spring is waiting for rain showers to end so we can try to spot some rainbows.

You know how you always heard about “the end of the rainbow”? Well, it turns out there is no end.

I just read the other day that the rainbow always changes arc direction depending on your position. So as you travel, it seems to travel too.

Bummer.

They may not be what they appear, but rainbows are still plenty of fun for kids.

And that’s why I thought I’d make some rainbow tally marks worksheets for kids who are working on counting with tally marks!

These would be fantastic for spring math centers! Simply laminate the pages and let students use them with dry erase markers!

Counting with tally marks can seem old-fashioned, but it’s still a wonderful math skill for kids to learn.

When students use tallies, they practice one to one correspondence, skip counting by fives, and number sense (understanding what numerals actually mean).

Crows.

Our neighborhood didn’t have many trees, but it had lots of telephone lines. And it was an everyday occurrence to see crows gathered up in groups on the lines right outside our window.

In the fall, before the weather turned cold, we’d see lots of them. Then they’d suddenly take off and we wouldn’t see them again until the spring thaw. 

So I thought crows would be a fun fall or spring theme for math center activities and that’s where these counting crows write and wipe addition cards come in!

These addition fact cards are so handy for reviewing basic sums using addends up to five. Plus, you can use them over and over again, so it’s a prep once and you’re done activity!

Counting Crows! Write and Wipe Addition Cards

To use these counting crows themed write and wipe addition cards, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Printer (with ink)
• Printer Paper
• Laminator
• Dry erase crayons
• Scissors (optional)

This product includes 28 addition fact cards that feature addends from one to five. The sums are missing, so that students can fill them in.

Each card also shows the number of crows that corresponds to each addend. That way, students can use these objects to count up to the sum, if necessary.

Use these with dry erase crayons so that students can practice, wipe their answers away, and pass them on to the next learner!

You can even cut each card out, place them on a ring, and use them in morning tubs for quick review.

There is also a set of 28 cards featuring blank addend and sum spaces. Since the number of crows still appears on the cards, students can fill in each space and add as usual.

I remember trying to make colorful anchor charts to bring this topic to life as much as possible, but it just fell flat. The kids were not interested in hot pink definitions of fractions on colored chart paper.

The good thing is that fractions lend themselves very well to food. There are so many foods we cut into equal parts, including pumpkin pie.

Which is why these pumpkin pie themed fraction clip cards are a neat way to make learning about fractions fun and easy to understand!

Now that we’re winding down first grade with Roo (yay!), I’ve been looking through the math objectives to make sure we touch on as many topics as possible. One of the major math concepts we still had to discuss was: measurement.

For Roo, though, life begins and ends with movement. So I wanted to make learning about measurement as fun as possible. Time to add in some monster trucks with a fun set of monster truck themed measurement for first grade printables!

These are a wonderful way to practice using rulers to measure to the nearest inch, half-inch, and quarter inch, especially if you have active kids who love all things transportation.

Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Printables

To use these monster truck measurement for first grade printables, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links included in this post. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Printer Paper
• Pencils
• A Ruler

All you have to do is print the worksheets and then follow the instructions!

Kids can choose from measuring to the nearest inch, the nearest half-inch, or the nearest quarter-inch. So these work well for teaching measurement for first grade, but also measuring skills for second grade and rising third grade students.

This product also includes a full answer key, so kids can check their work!

Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Printables Lesson

Since it was Roo’s first time working on this topic, we started with learning to measure to the nearest inch.

After we talked about the importance of lining up the first line on the ruler with the start of the object, Roo was off and running!

I encouraged him to draw a line from the start of the object to the point at which it lined up with the ruler, and then the same with the end of the object.

The instructions say to measure to the nearest inch, so it was also a good time to talk about estimation. After Roo measured each line of trucks, he wrote down the number on the lines. Easy peasy!

Since Pooh is in second grade, he worked on measuring to the nearest half-inch.

And he ended up learning that .5 and 1/2 are the same thing! (We’re already working on third grade objectives, albeit unconsciously…lol.)

We are huge basketball fans. My husband played basketball in high school and all of us love to watch games whenever we get a chance.

So – for my kids who are sports lovers, but aren’t necessarily math lovers, I thought I’d make a new set of free printable flashcards – basketball free skip counting flashcards! These are a fun resource to get active kids into memorizing skip counting by 2, 5, and 10!

Basketball Free Skip Counting Flashcards

To use these flashcards, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For more, see our Disclosure Policy.)

• Laminator (for making the cards sturdy)

In this pack, there are flashcards for counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s – up to 40. And you can use them in many ways!

Play skip counting concentration: You could play a concentration game where kids have to flip over the cards that follow one another in sequence for counting by a certain number. For example, if a child turns over the 2 card, he or she would need to turn over the 4 card to have a matching pair. Then continue in order: 6, 8, and so on.

Use them for memorizing skip counting: Laminate all the cards and punch a hole in the top left corner of each. Put them on a key ring and have the kids spend a few minutes each day memorizing skip counting sequences. Be sure to put the cards on the ring in order!

Work on fast recall skills: Or you could use them as traditional flashcards. Put the cards in sequence. Then hold up one card and ask the kids what number comes next. For example, hold up a 10 and ask what child what card comes next. The child who calls it out correctly first gets to keep the next card. Whoever has the most at the end is the winner!

Turns out that we didn’t actually get any snow, which was disappointing to my kids. But we kept the snowy theme going with a fun paper snowflake craft featuring 2nd grade math factors!

Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors Craft

Before we could start talking about math factors, though, Pooh needed a quick primer on multiplication. So we talked about making equal groups – one of the ways we can teach multiplication.

First, we started with a simple multiplication fact – 3 groups of 3 equals 9.

Then we learned that you can also make nine by using 1 group of 9 dots.

Which means 9 has three factors: 1, 3, 9. All three can be multiplied in different combinations to make 9.

Time to make our math factor snowflakes! We used our Snowflake Math Factor Printables and a set of Unifix Cubes to help Pooh visualize how to find his multiplication factors.

As we made equal groups of 8, 4, and 2, Pooh discovered the missing math factors that make 24: 3, 6, and 12.

As we discovered the missing factors, Pooh filled in his snowflake.

Now to cut it out!

Roo was in the kitchen as we worked. He came upon one of the paper scraps and declared it “a great white shark’s tooth”. Alrighty then.

We added masking tape to the back and hung our snowflakes on the window.

Ta-da! We got some “snow” after all!

This was a really fun, hands-on activity that also served as a nice way to talk about multiplication without overwhelming my 2nd grader.

One of Pooh’s objectives this year is to learn to work with arrays.

When I was in school, we weren’t using arrays. We were memorizing addition and multiplication facts back then.

Now, though, arrays are an important (and helpful) way to understand adding and multiplying.

So I put together a math product: Apple Arrays! – A fun, apple-themed way to have array practice for second grade!

Apple Array Practice for Second Grade

This product includes 16 worksheets that include both addition and multiplication for numbers 1-5.

If your students are still working on addition fluency, the first ten worksheets are all about adding numbers 1-5.

A full answer key is provided, so the kids can check their work.

This is a great activity for practicing addition facts.

But if your students are ready for a quick introduction to multiplication, the last six worksheets are perfect for showing them the relationship between adding and the times tables!

How to Use Apple Array Practice for Second Grade

I have to admit that when Pooh saw that there were multiplication problems on the sheet, his reaction was “TIMES TABLES????”

It was a dramatic moment, for sure.

But I used the first few pages to introduce him to using arrays with addition.

And then we talked about how addition with arrays is the same as multiplication.

This product focuses just on working with 5’s from 5+0 to 5+5+5, so you can use it to introduce times tables from 5×1 to 5×5.

The first set of pages contains apple arrays and written addition and multiplication problems.

Pooh and I looked at each row and column in the arrays to understand why we write those particular addition and multiplication equations to represent them.

Count out the number of apples in each row to find your first addend.

Then count the number of rows to find the second. Simple!

After he went through and solved the first set of problems, we used the second set of pages.

These pages have the apple arrays and addition/multiplication problems, but kids have to read the array correctly to fill in the addends/multiplicand/multiplier.

Which he did on his own!

He was so excited to grasp how to read arrays and relate them to multiplying that as soon as Jay came in the door, he said “Dad! I learned how to do times today!”

Tigger’s had her struggles with math over the years, so we’ve had to add a little fun to our math work to help her stay focused. This month, we decided to tackle multiplication factors with set of free snowflake math factor printables! Read on to see how to get your copy!

Free Snowflake Math Factor Printables

To use these printables, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are included in this post. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

We designed the activity so that the snowflake arms all show numbers that are factors of the larger number in the center. They work on a diagonal, so there are three numbers already given and the kids have to find the other number that makes a factor pair.

Example: On the sheet above, the center number is 36, so all of the numbers on the snowflake are factors of 36. Kids will need to find the missing number in each factor pair: 18 x ? = 36; 9 x ? = 36; 3 x ? = 36, and so on.

To give Tigger a helping hand, we walked her through the first one. We’ve covered multiplication with her in the past and found that the circles and dots method seems to work best for her.

We decided to let her try the next one on her own.

She did great! She counted up the numbers and filled in the spots pretty easily.

We added some larger numbers in the pack as well to help kids test their multiplication facts, but a full answer key is provided at the back.
