Introducing shapes is one of my favorite early learning concepts.

They’re so fun to teach because they’re all around us! And that makes it a great lesson for getting kids involved and applying what they learn in real life.

You can also talk about shapes during read-aloud time. These fun shape books for kids to read are a great place to start!

Each of the selections features either a fictional story involving shapes or a colorful non-fiction lesson about identifying each one.

As you look through the list, try to find three or four that might resonate with your students in particular.

For example, if your school is close to a metropolis, the book “City Shapes” might be an especially good fit. Or, if you’ll be studying spiders soon, try the book “Walter’s Wonderful Web”.

How to Share These Books with Early Learners

A simple way to use these is to talk about the shapes your students already know.

Ask:

  • What shapes can you see around the classroom?
  • This shape has three sides. What is its name?
  • Can you think of a shape that has no sides?
