I don’t mind teaching my students about them and I realize the valuable role they play in our ecosystems.

I just don’t want them anywhere near me.

Except for butterflies and ladybugs. In fact, I can actually pick a ladybug up without being scared.

So I quite enjoyed putting together this list of fun ladybug books for kids!

Introducing shapes is one of my favorite early learning concepts.

They’re so fun to teach because they’re all around us! And that makes it a great lesson for getting kids involved and applying what they learn in real life.

You can also talk about shapes during read-aloud time. These fun shape books for kids to read are a great place to start!

20 Fun Books about Pets for Kids to Read

January 14, 2022 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Just a few months ago, we decided to make a huge change in our family.

We got a pet.

Our rescue dog has been….a bit of a challenge, but we love him to pieces already.

Which started me to thinking about how to talk about pets with young learners. And I thought I’d share a fun list of books about pets for kids to read!

20 Pet Books for Kids to Read

These picture books (some of which I own) are wonderful for talking about pets in early grades.

So if you’re planning a pet unit or if you’re thinking of adopting a pet for your family or classroom, these are excellent for helping kids learn more about caring for different kinds of pets.

Read on to see the full list of pet books for kids.

And, for more fun with animal learning in early grades, take a look at our Zoo Animal Learning Cards!

20 Books about Pets for Kids

This list of books includes both fiction and non-fiction selections.

All of them feature plenty of pictures, so they’re best suited to preschool and early elementary students.

20 Books about Pets for Kids to Read

Some of them even talk about pets from a historical perspective – from pets that lived in prehistoric epochs to pets that have lived in the White House!

How to Use These Books about Pets with Students

Of course, a natural way to use these books to share a few of the selections during read-aloud time.

But you can also introduce them with an appropriate craft.

For example, the book “Can I Be Your Dog?”, which is on the list (and a personal favorite of mine) goes perfectly with a Coffee Filter Dog Craft.

Or you might read one of the books together in class. Then ask your students to go home and return with one fact they’ve learned about a pet in the book.

Some of the books about different types of pets are great for this.

15 Adorable Snowman Books for Kids

November 17, 2021 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you ever built a snowman?

I got a chance to…once.

Down here in Georgia, we don’t get snow often. And when we do, it’s usually what we call a “dusting”. Just enough to be pretty as it falls, but not enough to stick to the ground.

One winter, when I was about four, we actually had a legitimate snowfall. And we built a snowman in the front yard.

It was awesome.

I still think about that snowman every winter.

And, so, I’m sharing a list of adorable snowman books for kids to help your early readers get into the winter spirit, whether you have a chance to build a snowman this year or not.

Having kids will do that to you.

But lighthouses are still fascinating structures for children to explore and these lighthouse books for kids are a great way to introduce them to young ones!

20 Super Fun Activity Books for Kids

April 21, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When I was in second grade or so, I loved school so much I didn’t want the school year to end.

The assistant principal took me aside and gave me a stack of activity books to work on over the summer.

Best. Summer. Ever.

I liked playing outside and all, but I always loved spending time doing puzzles and brain teasers and mazes as a kid.

My kids love to play with workbooks too, so I thought I’d share this list of 20 super fun activity books for kids!

How to Use Activity Books for Kids at Home

In our home, we tend to use activity books for quiet play.

When we’re finished with our specific lessons for the day (usually around 11:30 a.m.), we have lunch and then set aside 45 minutes or so for quiet time.

Generally, the kids need a break from each other at this point. And I desperately need the house to be silent for a bit.

I let them choose an activity book from a stack and hand out the necessary supplies. And off they go!

Here’s what I usually have available for my kids: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Colored pencils
  • Washable markers
  • Drawing pencils
