All About Me! Simple Writing Prompt for Kids

Writing is one of the most wonderful things in the world to me. I love the feeling of writing down my thoughts and gaining a sense of clarity as my pen moves across the paper.

As much as I love writing, though, I do not love writing about myself. It’s just…uncomfortable.

And it’s uncomfortable for a lot of children too.

Which is why I wanted to share this simple All About Me writing prompt for kids. It’s a simple, non-intimidating way to break into writing about self, even for younger students!

This would be a wonderful activity for the first week of school, but it could also be a great icebreaker anytime a new student joins the class.

All About Me! Simple Writing Prompt for Kids

To use this simple writing prompt for kids, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

What I love about this simple writing activity is that most of the work is already done for students. They don’t have to figure out what to write about, which is what trips up a LOT of writers.

They can simply fill in the blanks!

As the teacher, be sure to fill one out too! That way, your class can get to know you better.

These could even make an excellent bulletin board display! Hand out different colored pencils and let students complete them on their own.

Then arrange them as an “All About Our Class” display!

Easy Shape School Bus Craft for Kids

I know it’s still technically summer, but school in our area starts next week, so we’re fully in the back to school spirit around here.

And that means school shopping, open house events, and weeknight meal planning – all of which I’ve been frantically doing for the last couple of days.

Our kids are pretty excited about school this year (so far), but if you have little ones who are…less than enthusiastic about going back to school, a fun way to get them in the mood is to make a cute back to school craft.

Which is where this easy shape school bus craft for kids might come in handy!

This is such a simple way to start getting kids to think about school and learning for the new school year!

Easy Shape School Bus Craft for Kids

To make this easy shape school bus craft for kids, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

A copy of our printable school bus craft template
Printer (with ink)
Printer Paper
Scissors
Glue stick
Ballpoint pen

To start, print out the school bus craft template. Since the template already has colored shapes, you can just print and get started without having kids color it in.

Use scissors to cut out all of the shapes on the template. (If your child is cutting the shapes out, be sure to use child-safe scissors.)

To make the school bus, begin adding the blue squares and rectangles to the yellow rectangle.

Glue them down. Place the blue rectangular piece second in line to serve as the “door” of the bus.

Next, glue the gray small circles onto the center of the larger black circles. These are the bus’s “tires”. Glue those on the bottom edge of the yellow rectangle.

Add the half circle and triangle shapes to each end of the bus as the vehicle’s lights. Glue those in place.

Finally, use an ink pen to trace the outline of each window and door and you’re done!

The blue bus would make a great craft for a transportation unit, because you could talk about public buses and how they serve the community.

And, since all of the bus template pieces are basic shapes, this would be a wonderful craft for a shapes lesson too!

Surviving the Back to School Crash

It happens to all of us. We start off in mid-summer with the homeschool planning and around late July, we really kick the back to school stuff into high gear. 🙂

Then by mid-September, we’re feeling the blahs of the daily school routine. (Interestingly, the same thing happened when I sent my kids to public school last year.)

This time around, though, I was a little bit more prepared. So I wrote a post sharing a few tips on surviving the back to school crash!

When does the back to school crash hit you? For me, it’s about a month after the school year begins. And it generally falls on a Tuesday.

The newness of the new year has worn off and my kids are back to complaining about having to “do work” everyday. By then, I’m usually over the newness too and it can be a real struggle to keep my early year enthusiasm going.

Sending our kids to public school last year was a huge eye-opener for me when it comes to back to school scheduling. Adjusting from getting up at 8 am to getting up at 6:15 am was something they were never really able to do.
