Most kids love animals and, in this set of free printable flashcards alphabet cards, you can use an animal to introduce each letter – from A to Z!

In this set, you’ll find free printable flashcards for every letter of the alphabet – each one featuring a different real or imaginary animal!

You can use the cards to help kids learn animals, letters, letter sounds, or all three concepts!

You might even want to use the set as an introduction to an animal unit.

Free Printable Flashcards: Shape Flashcards

I don’t know what it is about flashcards, but my kids absolutely love them.

They’ll collect them, lay them out on the table, pass them around, look at them, and toss them in the air for hours.

Not sure the tossing actually counts as learning, but it’s…something.

Since shapes are one of the primary concepts to teach early learners, I thought a set of free printable flashcards shape cards would be awesome to share with all of you!

These are an excellent resource for preschoolers and kindergartners who are learning shapes.

If you want to get an early start on this concept, you could even use these with toddlers!

How Do I Print The Printable Shape Flashcards?

To use these free printable flashcards shape cards, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Printer paper
Scissors
Laminator ( good if you want to reuse the cards later)

The set includes 16 flashcards for the following shapes:

Square
Circle
Triangle
Rectangle
Star
Heart
Diamond
Oval

One set of eight flashcards includes both the shape names and pictures. The second set features only the shapes.

A line art version is included if you need to save on ink! (And who doesn’t?)

When printing, you can decide how many sets you want at the moment.

Print the color set with names if you’re just starting to cover shapes for the first time.

You might want to come back and print the other sets for review afterward.

How Can I Use Shape Flashcards for Learning?

There are a few ways you can use these flashcards with early learners.

For toddlers, you can laminate them (trust me on this) and put them on an O ring.

They make a great addition to a busy bag!

For preschoolers, you can start talking about the shapes and their names.

Use the cards without names to help them review each shape.

You can also talk about the differences in color. Ask questions such as “Which shape is red?” or “Which shape is yellow?”

Or you can print the line art version and let the kids color the shapes!

For kindergartners, take the activity a little further by talking about the sides each shape has.

They’ll notice right away that the circle and oval are the exceptions – having no sides at all.

You might also place the cards on a ring and let students walk around the classroom, the outdoors, or even their home to spot similar shapes around them!

Falling Leaves! Leaf Identification Flashcards and Matching Activity

Fall is nearly here!

I love summer, but fall is a close runner-up for my favorite time of year.

The leaves change colors, the weather gets cool, plus we get to start baking and knitting!

So I thought I’d share a set of printable leaf identification flashcards!

These are perfect for fall learning, but you can really use them anytime of the year.

They’d also be great for a spring unit, since that’s when plants begin to flower again.

I am woefully ignorant about plant species, so I learned quite a bit by making these.

I hope you and your students enjoy them as well!

Day and Night! Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity

Have you ever seen a possum in real life?

Growing up in the country, I knew that they existed. But it took several years before I actually saw one scurrying away in the early morning hours.

It was like catching sight of Bigfoot.

I knew that there were animals that were awake when I was asleep at night, but to actually see one was memorable.

If you’re teaching students about animal sleep habits, this printable and digital Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity can help!

Most kids love to learn about animals and my students are no exception.

So when we were starting to learn about animal sleeping habits, I wanted to find a way to make a simple, hands-on activity they’d love to do.

Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity for Kids

I remember learning about nocturnal animals when I was a kid, but we didn’t talk much about diurnal animals (at least not using the term “diurnal”).

So in case this term is fairly new to you as an educator, “diurnal” simply means that they are active during the day like you and me!

The printable nocturnal animal sorting activity is super easy to use. You’ll only need the following supplies: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Printer Paper
Scissors
Laminator (if you want to make a set that lasts)
Hook and loop adhesive coins (optional)

This resource includes picture cards of 16 animals: eight are nocturnal and eight are diurnal – in both English and Spanish.

Some of the animals in the product include:

Hawk
Gorilla
Bee
Raccoon
Elephant
Possum
Butterfly
Dog
And 8 more!

There are also sorting pages (in both English and Spanish) where students can classify animals according to whether they are diurnal or nocturnal.

The Spanish set includes a pronunciation guide.

A set of unlabeled picture cards is also inside!

Plus, there’s an answer key included, as well as a full set of instructions.

How to Use the Diurnal and Nocturnal Animals Sorting Activity with Students

When you’re ready to use this resource with your class, here are a few ways you can include it in your lesson plan.

(Look at the included teaching script if you need an idea of how to introduce this topic.)

You can use this for a one-time learning Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting activity.

Just skip the laminating and have students cut and paste the animals in the correct column.

If you have Spanish-speaking students, let them use the animal cards and the sorting sheet with Spanish terms.

This is also great for early Spanish immersion classes.

If you have students who are practicing writing, use the unlabeled cards as a labeling activity!

Just laminate the cards and then allow students to write the animal names (in either language) with wet erase markers.

Or have the class help you label the cards by challenging them to spell each animal name out loud with you.

Use the unlabeled cards as a reference and let students name each animal on their own. They can then use the labeled cards for self-checking.

If you use it at science centers, add hook and loop coin stickers to the back of the cards. Cut each column apart and place them on rings.

Then add coin stickers onto the column squares so students can practice sorting the animals again and again.

Feathered Friends! Printable Bird Identification Flashcards

The air is getting warmer and we’ve started noticing flocks of birds flying in a “V” formation around our town. Even Piglet shouts “All those birds, Mama!” when she sees them.

They’re returning here after the winter. Soon we’ll be hearing them sing in the mornings again!

So I thought our next set of printable flashcards should be a set of bird identification flashcards!

These are so simple for a spring science activity. They’re also a wonderful fit for a fall unit, particularly if you’re studying migration.

How to Use Printable Bird Identification Flashcards

One of the simplest ways to use these bird species identification cards is to memorize birds by their pictures and then quiz students as a review.

Since one set of the cards has pictures of the birds only, make the picture cards into a “Guess Who?” game!

These would also be wonderful for a spring or fall nature walk!

Use a hole puncher to put a hole in the top left corner of each card and place all of them on a ring.

Then take the flashcards with you as the kids try to see how many species they can spot in your area!

I’m not a GIANT fan of teaching phonics, but you know what? They work. Especially if kids don’t really “get” sight words.

So, today we’re sharing another set of literacy flashcards: Long Vowel Flashcards!

Free Printable Flashcards: Long Vowel Flashcards

To use these long vowel flashcards, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Printer Paper
Scissors
Laminator (great for keeping the cards sturdy)

This product includes flashcards for all five long vowel sounds: A, E, I, O, and U. In the product, you’ll find:

A set of cards with pictures and long vowel words for each letter
A set of cards with pictures and vowel letters
A set of cards with just the pictures
A set of cards with just the vowels
And a set of cards with just the long vowel words

These are set up to be used as kids learn to memorize the sounds.

So if you’re just starting out, you might use the cards that have the images and words to make sure kids know what each picture shows.

Once they recognize the images, they can move on to isolating the vowel sounds in each word. That’s a great time to focus on the pictures with the letters.

After they get the sounds down, try quizzing them with the word or letter cards!

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to share a new set of free printable flashcards with you (finally!).

We’ve been talking about spring for the past few weeks, but summer is around the corner and that means butterflies!

I’m not the biggest fan of bugs in general, but butterflies hold a special place in my heart. They’re beautiful, but they’re also incredible!

They go through the most amazing transformation known to scientists: the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Any creature that can do something like that is amazing in my book.

Free Printable Flashcards: Counting Beach Balls

Summer is on the way! And I, for one, am thrilled.

Summer is my very favorite season. My very favorite.

I don’t care that it’s super hot down here in Georgia. I don’t care that the mosquitoes are out in full force.

The sun shines all day and (almost) all evening and that makes me happy.

Plus, we usually end up at the beach, which is my true birthplace, no matter what my birth certificate says.

So, in the spirit of summer, I thought I’d share a set of free printable flashcards counting to ten cards with beach balls!

These are so fun for little learners who are practicing counting to ten over the summer!

They’d also make wonderful additions to early math centers when school is starting.

Free Printable Flashcards: Counting Beach Balls

To use this set of free printable flashcards: counting beach balls, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

This set of printable counting flashcards includes ten cards that show both the number word and the corresponding number of beach balls.

Plus, there’s a set of cards with the beach balls and blank label spaces.

Students can use the enclosed number word labels to match up the amount of objects with the correct number word.

How to Use Counting Cards with Early Learners

There are a lot of ways to use these with students!

Place the number word and object cards on a ring. Add them to morning tubs for quick counting practice!

Laminate the number word labels and add sticky hook and loop dots to make a reusable activity.

This would be perfect for centers!

Let the kids get a little coloring practice by using the line art version. Students can color in the number of beach balls that matches each number word.

Assign these as a homework activity!

Let students take a line art version home and color in the beach balls. Then they can cut and paste the correct number word label on each card!

Phonics Fun! Printable Phonics Flashcards for Kids

Phonics are kind of a controversial topic in education these days. Some kids learn to read without ever practicing phonics, but some benefit by learning to master common phonics skills.

Personally, I’m for whatever helps a child learn to read.

Some of my kids took to reading right away. Others learned beginning sounds, digraphs, and suffixes before learning to read fluently.

So I thought these printable phonics flashcards might be useful to some of you as well!

These would be excellent for literacy centers, phonics reviews, and even “I Have, Who Has?” games! Plus, you can print them once and then use them over and over again.

These printable phonics flashcards for kids include a complete set of vowel flashcards, featuring letters and pictures that have the correct beginning sound for each letter.

Long and short vowel sounds are included.

So, for letter A, there are two flashcards: one featuring a picture of an acorn (for long A) and another featuring a picture of an alligator (for short A).

Consonant sounds are included in this set of printable phonics flashcards too!

Letters that have more than one sound, such as G, have a flashcard for each type of sound: hard and soft.

In the example of G, one flashcard shows a picture of grapes (for hard G) and another shows a picture of a gingerbread man (for soft G).

Even tricky letters like X are included! One flashcard shows a word that begins with X (“xylophone”) and another shows a word that ends with the X sound (“fox”).

Color and line art versions of all the flashcards are included as well!
