Printable Activities for The Grouchy Ladybug

March 1, 2018 by Selena Robinson 12 Comments

Make a fun ladybug counting craft with these free printable activities for The Grouchy Ladybug!

Spring is finally here! And it’s a great time of year to read one of our favorite children’s books: The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. As we read the story, we talked a bit about how ladybugs are beautifully designed with colorful spots and lines.

And that’s when I decided to share a few printable activities for The Grouchy Ladybug that help kids learn to work with numbers and fractions!

Ladybug Counting and Math Activity

Ladybugs are so perfectly divided into quarters that they make wonderful math counting frames and fraction templates. And that’s what you’ll see in these printable ladybug math activities!

Read on to see how to get this set for free! And for more fun with ladybugs, don’t miss our easy coffee filter ladybug craft!

Reading The Grouchy Ladybug with Kids

Our kids love reading The Grouchy Ladybug. They always laugh at how cantankerous the ladybug is at the beginning.

Activities for the Grouchy Ladybug

He’s just mean and stubborn and unnecessarily contentious.

But after an encounter with a much, much, much larger animal (a whale), he is sufficiently chastened to show a little gratitude to his fellow ladybug.

To take the ladybug theme a bit farther, we created a couple of hands-on math activities for kids.

Ladybug Fraction Printable Activity

In one of the math activities, we had the boys color ladybug fraction templates.

Hands-On Ladybug Fraction Activity

They took turns creating basic fractions on their ladybugs.

Hands-On Learning about Fractions with Kids

They could show 1/4.

Simple Ladybug Fractions Activity

Or they could show 3/4.

Learning about Simple Fractions with Kids

Or they could work with the halves and show 1/2. You can also have kids use all of the pieces to discuss what the word “whole” means in mathematics and that fractions are simply “part” of a whole piece.

Printable Ladybug Math Lesson

Then we started working with our ladybug “spots”.

Printable Ladybug Counting Activity

After laminating the pages and cutting them out, we used spots on either side of the ladybug to practice counting, basic addition, and subtraction with the ladybug spots.

As they added up the number of spots on each side, they learned a few ways to add and reach 10. Plus, there are a few extra spots in case of any whoopsies while cutting.

Rhyme Time! Printable Rhyming Literacy Puzzles for Kids

February 19, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My little one has taken to reading much quicker than I imagined.

I hoarded so many books for learning to read with the specific intention of using them with her. And then she never needed a single one. Go figure.

One thing that has been a little difficult for her to grasp, though, is rhyming.

My oldest child, also an early reader, grasped the concept right away. This child, though, needs a little more help.

So I thought I’d make a few sets of rhyming literacy puzzles to help her practice reading rhyming pairs and matching them up!

Help your children learn to practice good dental habits with this fun healthy smile file folder game for kids!

Healthy Smile File Folder Game for Kids

February 13, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the American Dental Association.
What was your view of going to the dentist when you were a kid? If I’m being honest, I’d have to say that I had no view of it at all. Good oral health wasn’t stressed in our family, and I never went to the dentist as a child. The first time I sat in a dentist’s chair, I was 21 years old.

Now that I’ve come to understand the value of good oral health, my husband and I make sure that all of our children visit the dentist regularly. In fact, they love going to the children’s dentist because the office is geared toward kids. They can watch movies, play in an indoor treehouse, and choose prizes after each visit.

Well, most of my kids enjoy the dentist. My youngest son is the exception.

Playing the Healthy Smile File Folder Game

A few months ago, he was told that he would have to get fitted for braces. And since then, he’s started to dread going to the dentist. The orthodontist told him that he’d need them by age nine, so it’s just a matter of time.

Instead of viewing braces as an ordeal that he’ll have to go through, we want him to look at them as part of developing a healthy smile. We also want him to understand that there are several good habits suggested by the American Dental Association that we need to develop in order to take care of our teeth.

So I’m sharing this printable healthy smile file folder game for kids as part of a sponsored post on behalf of the American Dental Association! It’s a fun way to review good oral health habits with your kids and it’s absolutely free! Read on to see how to get yours!

Help your children learn to practice good dental habits with this fun healthy smile file folder game for kids!

It’s true that kids need to learn to brush their teeth every day. But that is just part of maintaining a healthy smile. According to the American Dental Association, good oral health also requires setting limits on sugary drinks, using fluoride regularly, and – if necessary – receiving orthodontic treatment, such as braces.

If kids need braces, they need to take additional care of their oral health by avoiding sugary, sticky foods and visiting the orthodontist regularly. So this healthy smile file folder game is designed to show kids the value of all of these habits when it comes to taking care of our teeth.

Playing the Healthy Smile Board Game

To play this game, you’ll need the following:

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Empty file folder
  • Laminator
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hole punch
  • Brass paper fastener

Healthy Smile File Folder Game

This game is designed for two players, so there are two game pieces.

Healthy Smile File Folder Board Game

Each side of the game includes boxes that help kids either move forward or backward, depending on whether they’re practicing good oral health habits or not.

Playing Healthy Smile File Folder Game

Kids can use the game spinner to find out how many spaces they can move ahead in the game.

Healthy Smile Board Game for Kids

When they land on a box that features instructions, they can simply follow what’s written.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

February 12, 2018 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

When you’re looking for a simple craft material, you cannot go wrong with coffee filters. I really didn’t think much about using them for art projects with the kids until I ended up buying way too many at once. But it turns out that you can use coffee filters as the basis for lots of crafts!

Since springtime is (finally!) on the way, I wanted to start making some fun spring crafts with our kids and that’s how we ended up making another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a simple coffee filter rainbow craft! This is such a fun project that only takes a few minutes to make!

Cute Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft for Kids

If you want to read about these incredible atmospheric phenomena, don’t miss our list of beautiful rainbow books to share with kids!

And be sure to see our list of 50 spring crafts for even more spring crafting projects kids can make!

This super easy coffee filter rainbow craft is a perfect spring craft to share with little ones!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

To make this coffee filter rainbow craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. See our Disclosure Policy for details.)

  • One White basket coffee filter
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Cotton balls

Easy Rainbow Coffee Filter Craft

To start, you’ll need to cut the bottom fourth off of the filter. You want to make the bottom level.

Making a Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

Like so. It’s always good to cut a little less than you think you need and then adjust as needed. If you want the kids to do this on their own, you can fold the part that you want them to cut down so that they can use child-safe scissors to follow the cutting line.

Simple Rainbow Coffee Filter Craft

Then use the scissors to cut out a half-circle from the center. It’s tempting to just cut the entire middle circle out, but that might not leave the kids with enough space to add all the colors of the rainbow. So try to cut a smaller half-circle than you see.

Then use the glue stick to glue the cut coffee filter onto the upper center of a piece of blue construction paper.

Rainbow Coffee Filter Craft for Kids

This project is a great time to talk about the colors of the rainbow. In this craft, we decided to keep our colors in the order they actually appear in the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

A simple way to help kids remember this is to use the acronym below:

R – red

O – orange

Y – yellow

G – green

B – blue

I – indigo

V – violet

Simple Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

Let the kids start coloring a squiggle line with each crayon color to make their rainbow colors. They can make circles, they can color solid lines, or they can use any other drawing shape they like!

Making a Coffee Filter Rainbow with Kids

Once the colors are done, it’s time to add some clouds!

Easy Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

Use the glue stick to spread glue onto the bottom of each side of the rainbow arc. Place three cotton balls at one end of the arc and press lightly.

Easy Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft for Kids

Do the same on the other side. You might want to hold up the picture to make sure the cotton balls are glued on completely.

Making a Simple Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft

Then just draw a few other clouds in the background.

Super Easy Coffee Filter Rainbow Craft for Kids

And you’re done!

It’s neat to make this craft in traditional rainbow colors, but you can always let the kids come up with their own color schemes! A pink background with a rainbow made of neutral colors actually sounds pretty neat too. See how creative the kids can be!

Teach children about the African continent and its people with this simple Introduction to Africa lesson plan!

Introduction to Africa Lesson Plan for Kids

February 8, 2018 by Selena Robinson 6 Comments

10 Days of African History for Kids: Look! We're Learning!

We’ve been studying African kingdoms of the past with the kids and we’re thrilled to share what we learned with you! It’s fascinating (and tragic) to me that Africa is the largest of all the inhabited continents and yet it is largely overlooked in history programs for kids.

In fact, I use the “What Your ____th Grader Needs to Know” series with our children and there is no mention of African history outside of Egypt until fourth grade. This means that kids are first introduced to Sub-Saharan African history with a discussion of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

I feel that initially presenting Africa in the light of slavery tends to bias children to the beauty and historical significance of African rulers and people. We’ve decided not to cover the subject in that way with our children and we’ve found out some incredible things so far.

For starters, Africa is so much more than poverty, oppression, and slavery. In fact, these things were fairly uncommon until colonialism started. So before we got into our lesson about African Kingdoms with the kids, we decided to learn more about the African continent – as it is today.

Take a look at this Introduction to Africa lesson plan you can share with your kids too! And if you want to learn even more about Africa with your children, don’t miss our African Kingdoms printable unit study!

Teach children about the African continent and its people with this simple Introduction to Africa lesson plan!

Introduction to Africa Lesson Plan for Kids

Let’s begin by tackling some common misconceptions about Africa.

The original name of Africa is not “Africa”!

First, did you know that Africa was not originally called Africa? That name was based on the name “Afri“, which was a Latin name given to the inhabitants of Carthage by the Romans in the second century B.C.E.

In fact, the Roman general Publius Cornelius Scipio was renamed Scipio Africanus after his victory against Hannibal at Carthage at the end of the century, because the name “Africa” was only used to denote the area surrounding the indigenous people who lived in and around Carthage at the time.

Somehow over the centuries, the name Africa was expanded to refer to the entire continent, but that was not the name that the inhabitants of Africa used. There is some disagreement about what the original name for Africa was, but some say that the original name was “Al-kebulan“, which is an Arabic name meaning “Land of the Blacks”.

African Kingdoms Unit Study

How big is Africa?

After finding out that the name of Africa wasn’t even originally Africa, we had to re-examine our entire view of the area. We decided to sift through popular images of Africa and compare them to the reality of life on the largest continent on Earth.

The free resource “Exploring Africa” by Michigan State University is an excellent introduction to African culture, history, and geography. We started with the beginning exercises about the size of Africa and the common portrayals of Africa in popular culture.

We also found an incredible graphic showing the enormous size of the African continent:

Africa is a Culturally Rich, Civilized Continent

What kind of landscape comes to mind when you hear the name “Africa”? Do you think of people who live in huts? Do you picture extreme poverty and dirty surroundings? Those are the images commonly used in the media. And Africa does have poor people and slums. (Like literally every other continent, except Antarctica.)

I live in the U.S. and if I wanted to show the U.S. as a country of poor, impoverished people, I’d have no trouble finding photographs to support that story. We see homeless people in our area on a regular basis. So it’s unfair to paint this as a situation that’s unique to the African continent.

African countries have huge cities, beautiful buildings, and incredibly rich historical sites.

The People of Africa

The Exploring Africa lesson plan makes an excellent point that I had not previously realized. Most of the images of Africa in modern culture are either of animals, nature, or buildings. The people of Africa are not widely highlighted, unless they are shown looking malnourished or unhappy.

When I thought back to my childhood, I realized that this was definitely true when I was growing up. Of course, it’s important to publicize the extreme poverty that ravages much of Africa, but those images are not representative of life for all Africans. Seeing those pictures over and over can make us feel that life in Africa is miserable for everyone, which is not true.

Here are some of the images of Africans we shared with our kids:

We also discussed the incredible diversity of geography on the African continent. Utah State University hosts a very thorough resource list of Africa lesson plans and we explored one to learn about the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

Constructing Contractions! Basic English Contractions Flashcards

February 6, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Free Contraction Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

Remember when you first learned how to form contractions?

I remember learning that in about first grade and thinking “It’s so cool that you can stick two words together and make a shorter word.”

I started looking at contractions as their own special code language, because you had to know what the original two words were to understand what the contraction meant.

It’s easy to see why I ended up becoming an English major, right?

Time has passed, but it’s still important to teach students how to “build” basic English contractions. Which is why I thought a construction theme would be perfect for these printable contractions flashcards!

Fun Construction Themed Contraction Flashcards

My boys are deep into a construction phase right now.

Our youngest son, in particular, is obsessed with earth movers, bulldozers, cranes, dump trucks, and just about anything related to building.

He told me last week that he intends to be a firefighter, a builder, and a policeman.

I told him that was good, because he could build a house. Then if the house caught on fire, he could put it out and take the person who caused the fire to jail.

To this he replied, “And then I’d build it all over again!”

So, I made these flashcards to help him learn about language arts in a fun way.

Read on to get your set!

And for more language arts fun, check out Construction Contractions – our complete English contractions ELA lesson!

Printable Contraction Flashcards

This product features flashcards that show how to “build” eight basic English contractions, including:

  • he’d
  • I’m
  • they’d
  • And five more!

Basic English Contractions Flashcards for Kids

There is one set of cards with the base words plus the contraction, and another set with just the base words.

Printable Language Arts Contraction Flashcards

That way, you can go over how to build the contraction and then quiz the kids on which contraction each pair of words forms.

English Contractions Flashcards

These would be an excellent ELA review for early elementary students!

As you go over each contraction’s root words, show students how the final contraction is altered (missing letters are replaced with an apostrophe).

Then let students flip through the blank word flashcards and try to remember which contraction is formed by the root words on the construction sign!

I thought I’d make a set of short vowel flashcards to share with my lovely readers today!

These are really simple to use and what makes them even better is that they’re FREE!

31 Beautiful African American Story Books for Kids

January 29, 2018 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

Read these wonderful African American story books for kids with your little ones!

As a mom to four African American children, I’ve been hard pressed to find great kids’ books that feature black characters (at least in our local library). They’re there, but it’s hard to find them, unless you have a few author names to start with.

I strongly feel it’s important for my kids to “see” themselves in what they read, especially when it comes to reading about history or receiving positive messages about themselves.

So – without further ado – here are 31 African American story books for you and your kids to explore this school year! The books are geared toward kids aged 3 to 12 and include fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction selections.

If you enjoy these stories, check out our list of must-read black history books for kids!

African Kingdoms! A Printable African History Unit Study for Kids

January 25, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

As we started studying history in our homeschool, I was disheartened to see how little information was available about Africa for elementary-aged children.

One of the programs we tried did not mention African kingdoms at all until fourth grade. Which meant that the first mention my children would get of African people at all would be in relation to slavery.

That was unacceptable to me.

So we set out on a multi-day African history unit study to discover some of the royal empires of Africa that existed long before the United States and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade ever existed.

African Kingdoms African History Unit

And, along the way, we learned so much that I wanted to share it with others.

Which is how this African Kingdoms printable unit study was born!

This unit, which is geared toward elementary students, is a great way to get to know some of the kingdoms and legendary rulers that reigned in Africa!

Read on to see how to pick up a copy for your kids!

And be sure to check out our list of must-read black history books too!

Winter is not my favorite season, but I absolutely love the beauty of snowflakes. Since we don’t see snow often in the South, a snowfall is still a big event down here.

In fact, we got a steady snowfall for a day last month and the kids just sat in the front of the living room window watching. It was basically our Super Bowl. 🙂

One of the most incredible things about snowflakes is that, as far as scientists can tell, no two snowflakes are alike! So it’s really difficult to find two similar snowflakes in nature.

But these snowflake preschool matching worksheets let kids find pairs of similar snowflakes in no time!

Harlem Renaissance Unit Study

January 16, 2018 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

We’ve always been passionate about teaching our kids black history. There are so many wonderful stories, people, and events to share. And one of our very favorite periods to discuss is the Harlem Renaissance.

So this year, we wanted to develop a Harlem Renaissance unit study we could cover with the kids to help them learn even more about the people, movements, and ideas that sprang up in Harlem during the 1920s. I hope you and your kids love the books and activities about the Harlem Renaissance below too!

Don’t forget to check out our printable jazz unit study “We Got Jazz” to learn about the pioneers of jazz and bebop!

What Was the Harlem Renaissance?

Watch the video below to get an overview of the Harlem Renaissance and then let your kids answer the following questions.

1. What was the Harlem Renaissance? (Answer: A cultural and intellectual movement that occurred in Harlem, New York during the 1920s)

2. How did Harlem come to be a major African-American cultural center? (Answer: During the Great Migration, many African-Americans moved up north and settled in Harlem.)

3. What branches of thought and entertainment were included in the Harlem Renaissance? (Answer: Music, poetry, writing, art, and philosophy)

4. How did African-American fashion change during the Harlem Renaissance? (Answer: Men started to wear zoot suits, women wore low-slung dresses. Both men and women wore hats. Leopard-print became a popular trend, because of its connection to ancient African culture.)

5. How did the Harlem Renaissance affect the musical culture of the United States? (Answer: African-American art and music became popular with white audiences. White musicians began incorporating African-American musical rhythms and styles into their music.)

6. How did the Harlem Renaissance change the perception of African-Americans in the United States? (Answer: Prior to the 1920s, black people were often thought of as uneducated farmers. During the Renaissance, people came to see that black people were sophisticated, intelligent, and accomplished.)

Among the prominent writers of the movement was Langston Hughes (one of my personal writing heroes). This video is a good introduction to his work.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

January 8, 2018 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

We live in Georgia. So if we want to experience real winter weather, we usually have to travel pretty far north. Naturally, there was no way we would ever see penguins in their natural habitat.

But we did get to visit the Georgia Aquarium a few years back and when we stopped at the penguin exhibit, we got to see them running around, diving into the water, shooting through the water like rockets, and more. It turns out that penguins are pretty entertaining.

We’ve gotten to make a few animals as part of our coffee filter crafts for kids series. Now that winter is here, we had to add a coffee filter penguin craft to the mix! Read on to see how you can make one with your kids too!

Easy Coffee Filter Penguin Craft for Kids to Make

When you finish making this, add more of our winter-themed coffee filter craft projects! You can make a coffee filter moose craft or a jolly coffee filter snowman too!

Make this easy and cute coffee filter penguin craft with the kids this winter!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

To make this coffee filter penguin craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One White basket coffee filter
  • Crayons
  • Glue stick
  • Construction paper
  • Child-safe scissors

DIY Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Start by gluing the coffee filter in the center of the construction paper. After that, use a black crayon to draw two indented lines toward the top of the filter. (You’re outlining the white part of the penguin’s face.)

Easy Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Color the spaces on either side of those lines black.

Making a Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Like so.

Winter Playdough Mats for Kids

Our penguin is pretty sleepy, so we drew it with eyes closed.

Coffee Filter Penguin Craft for Kids

What long eyelashes you have, penguin! (Actually, it kind of looks like a ninja at the moment.)

Simple Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Then we used the safety scissors to cut a triangle out of orange construction paper. Then we glued it in the center to form the beak.

Cute Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Finally, we added a few falling snow flurries in the background.

At this point, you could really be finished. But we wanted to make our penguin into a lady bird.

So we gave her two blush circles on her cheeks out of pink construction paper. Isn’t she lovely?

This simple light refraction experiment for kids is an awesome way to learn about the properties of light!
Simple Light Refraction Experiment - Look! We're Learning!

We’re continuing with our simple science experiments this week by taking a look at light refraction. I found a great light refraction experiment video on YouTube and decided to try it with Tigger.

Full disclosure: I didn’t know that refraction was what this experiment demonstrated. I actually had to look it up first. But the experiment is super easy and quick, so that’s a big plus!

Simple Light Refraction Experiment

Watching the original light refraction experiment on YouTube will give you a great look at what’s involved in this activity. But you really only need four things:

  • A sticky note (I used a Post-It)
  • A marker
  • An empty transparent bottle
  • Water

Experiment on Refraction of Light

Draw two arrows on a sticky note. Make sure that each arrow points in a different direction. Stick the note to a blank wall.

Next, fill up the water bottle. Oh – put the lid on before you do this too! You don’t want water spilling out when you move the bottle around…lol.

Simple Refraction Experiment

The alternating arrows on the note point to the left and the right. Let the kids gradually move the water-filled bottle in front of the sticky note. As the bottle moves in front of the sticky note, something amazing happens.

Investigating Light Refraction

The arrows appear to change direction! The top arrow, which points to the left, appears to point to the right. And the bottom arrow, which points to the right, appears to point to the left!

Simple Light Experiment

Move the bottle back to see the arrows return to their original directions.

So what exactly is going on? We learned that refraction occurs because light bends when it passes through substances, such as water and plastic.

As the light travels through a substance, it becomes concentrated into a focal point, usually near the center. After light passes through the focal point, the rays cross over each other and cause images to appear reversed.

Turns out you can’t believe your eyes after all! 🙂
