Yeti Math! Math Practice for Early Grades

January 16, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Learning how to count by twos, threes, and fives is such a critical skill for early learners.

But it doesn’t end there!

Counting leads to recognizing inequalities – which numbers are greater or less – and recognizing the difference between even and odd numbers as well.

Since teaching during winter can be a bit of a drag (at least it can for me), I thought this fun Yeti math practice for early grades lesson would be a fun way to perk up these basic math skills!

Candy Bag Skip Counting Activity for Kids

December 2, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I don’t think there’s a thing young children like more than candy.

Okay, maybe ice cream. But it’s got to be a close competition.

If you ever want to make math more fun, just start by switching the word problem phrase “Susie has three apples” to “Susie has three pieces of candy” and watch the kids’ faces.

They’re infinitely more interested in the outcome.

So I thought that candy would be a fun theme to use for a simple skip counting center and that’s how this Candy Bag Count! Skip Counting Activity was born!

Fun Candy Bag Skip Counting Activity for Second Grade

This is a perfect second grade math center, because it’s standards-aligned to help students practice skip counting by fives, tens, and hundreds.

Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade

November 18, 2019 by Selena Robinson 5 Comments

This Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade is a fun way to help kids learn to use and make simple math patterns!

We’ve been having an unseasonably warm winter down South this year. But that changed drastically this week.

Last week, we had highs in the 70s. This week, we woke up to 25 degrees in the morning. That’s nothing to Northerners and Midwesterners, but us Southerners panicked.

I think it’s safe to say that winter has finally arrived.

And that means it’s a great time to talk about polar animals! So I’m sharing a fun Arctic Animal Pattern Activity for first grade!

Fun Arctic Animals Pattern Building Activity

These are so fun to use at math centers, especially in the winter!

If you like this activity, don’t miss this fun snowflake math factors craft for kids and our printable Polar Animal notebooking pages!

Pick up this Arctic Animals Pattern Activity to help little learners practice building basic math patterns with a fun winter theme!

Simple Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade

Recognizing and creating math patterns are a key concept in both kindergarten and first grade. Kids are often taught to recognize patterns according to frequency.

So you might have a ABABABAB pattern (one image, then another, then the first again, then the second) or you might have a AABBAABB pattern (the first image twice, the second image twice, and so on).

Arctic Animals Pattern Activity for Kids

Which is where this printable pattern activity comes in handy!

To use this pattern activity for first grade, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer Paper (I used Astrobright paper)
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Hook and loop sticky dots

Winter Playdough Mats for Kids

Printable Arctic Animals Pattern Activity

Help students read each pattern by saying the name of each picture aloud.

For example, a pattern row might read “Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo…”. Then ask “What picture comes next?”

Printable Arctic Animals Pattern Activity for Kids

When students answer “Fox!”, let them cut out the fox picture and paste it on the correct row to complete the pattern!

Do the same with the other patterns.

Arctic Animal Pattern Activity for Kids

Since some of the patterns follow an ABAB  structure and others follow an ABB or an ABC pattern, it’s good to practice the same pattern structure again and again to attain fluency before trying a different one.

You can use these as a one-time cut and paste activity or laminate them and use them with hook and loop sticky dots at math centers!

Counting Crows! Write and Wipe Addition Cards

October 22, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When my husband and I moved to the suburbs, we started to see something we hadn’t seen before.

Crows.

Our neighborhood didn’t have many trees, but it had lots of telephone lines. And it was an everyday occurrence to see crows gathered up in groups on the lines right outside our window.

In the fall, before the weather turned cold, we’d see lots of them. Then they’d suddenly take off and we wouldn’t see them again until the spring thaw.

So I thought crows would be a fun fall or spring theme for math center activities and that’s where these counting crows write and wipe addition cards come in!

Fun Counting Crows Addition Fact Cards

These addition fact cards are so handy for reviewing basic sums using addends up to five. Plus, you can use them over and over again, so it’s a prep once and you’re done activity!

Pumpkin Pie Parts! Fraction Clip Cards for Kids

October 21, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Fractions are not exactly known for being…the most fun math concept to teach.

I remember trying to make colorful anchor charts to bring this topic to life as much as possible, but it just fell flat. The kids were not interested in hot pink definitions of fractions on colored chart paper.

The good thing is that fractions lend themselves very well to food. There are so many foods we cut into equal parts, including pumpkin pie.

Which is why these pumpkin pie themed fraction clip cards are a neat way to make learning about fractions fun and easy to understand!

Fall Leaves Count and Match: Preschool Concentration Game for Kids

September 16, 2019 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Practice number recognition and counting skills with this simple preschool fall concentration game!

We’ve been working on counting and number recognition with our little one lately, so in the spirit of autumn, I thought I’d share a fun fall math preschool concentration game that little ones will love to play!

One of the best ways I’ve found to get my kids excited about learning is to play lots and lots of games. That way, they get to practice basic concepts without even realizing it.

So for my smallest learner, this concentration game was an easy way to help her work on counting.

Fun Fall Leaf Preschool Concentration Game

And it only takes a few minutes to make too!

This would be a fantastic fall math center activity for early learners. Or you could turn it into a fall themed busy bag!

If your kids like this game, be sure to check out our apple preschool counting puzzles for more preschool fall math fun!

Use this fun fall leaves preschool concentration game to help little learners practice number skills and counting!

Fall Leaf Count and Match Preschool Concentration Game

To make this fall math preschool concentration game, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Patterned cardstock
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Scissors

Fall Themed Preschool Concentration Game

To assemble the game, print the flashcards and then laminate them.

Kids can be pretty rough on pieces of paper. This way, the cards will stay crisp enough to reuse.

Printable Fall Counting Preschool Concentration Game

Here’s a tip: If you print these on regular printer paper, kids will be able to see the numbers and dice through the back. Which doesn’t make for much of a challenge.

So I printed them on patterned cardstock.

That way, the game looks better and it’s more fun for the kids to try to match up the cards without seeing what each one is in advance.

Fall Leaf Counting Concentration Game

Once you’ve laminated the cards and cut them out, lay them out face-down. Let the kids practice turning them over one by one.

The goal is to match the leaf number cards with the leaf dice cards. The leaf with “5” on it corresponds to the leaf that has five dots on the die.

Fall Counting Concentration Game

To make matching easier, the leaves are color-coded. You can even use them to match colors for younger kids!
