8 Must-Try Winter Homeschool Ideas

November 19, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I hate winter. Hate it.

I’m from Florida and, whenever the temperature dips below about 60, I’m done for the year.

But when you’re homeschooling, you can’t just opt out of teaching during the cold. I know. I’ve tried it.

So that’s why I wanted to find some ways to make winter homeschooling fun!

These winter homeschool ideas are a great way to get the season off to a great start with your family! These are simple enough to do in one day.

Plus, they’re actually educational.

Fun Winter Homeschool Ideas to Try

Read on to see these tips for homeschooling during winter! And if you use a few, I’d love to know which ones were your favorites.

For more ways to teach about winter, don’t miss our All About Snowflakes printable unit or our list of must-read winter books for kids!

Feeling a bit chilly about homeschooling this winter? Get back into the swing of things with these must-try winter homeschool ideas!

8 Must-Try Winter Homeschool Ideas

1. Teach about winter weather.  Take time to learn about the different types of snow and ice weather, as well as why temperatures turn colder during winter. Here’s a great explanation of why we have seasons, including winter.

2. Teach about emergency preparedness. You don’t have to be a prepper to prepare for winter. In fact, most of us already do it without realizing it. Teach a homeschool lesson on how to make sure your home is ready for colder weather and why it’s important.

3. Learn how and why snow melts. Snow is magic! It’s a cold solid that turns into water! This is the perfect way to teach about solids and liquids! You could even have them bring snow indoors to the sink and watch what happens when it melts.

Our Superhero States of Matter science lesson offers a way to teach this concept, even if you don’t have snow outside!

4. Get creative and build a snow castle or artistic snowman. Need a winter art lesson? Get outside! Not only will your kids get off the couch for a while, but by making a snow castle or artistic snowman, they’ll be learning art!

Don’t have snow in your area? Make our pinecone snowman craft instead!

5. Make winter themed slime. Make a winter themed slime that includes fake snowflakes and teach your kids about the chemical reaction that makes the slime feel slimy.

To make wintery slime, change up our DIY Flubber recipe by skipping the food coloring and adding silver glitter!

6. Have a winter themed scavenger hunt. Bundle the kids up and send them outside with a list of things to find for a winter scavenger hunt. Be sure to include things such as pine cones, a tree branch without leaves, and other things that are common in winter.

Once they have found them all, have a discussion about how each item is different in winter and summer and what causes those changes.

7. Have a science lesson on how cold affects the human body. Most kids know they have to bundle up to go outside, but do they know why? Having a winter homeschool lesson about what cold weather can do to the body is the perfect way to teach them!

Here’s a great informative resource on the topic.

8. Make paper snowflakes. Snowflakes are amazing little things and your kids will love learning about them!

For an easy homeschool activity, pick up our Snowflake Math Factor craft and let kids cut out and decorate each snowflake before solving the math factor problems on each one. Be sure to hang them on the windows afterward!

Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade

November 18, 2019 by Selena Robinson 5 Comments

This Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade is a fun way to help kids learn to use and make simple math patterns!

We’ve been having an unseasonably warm winter down South this year. But that changed drastically this week.

Last week, we had highs in the 70s. This week, we woke up to 25 degrees in the morning. That’s nothing to Northerners and Midwesterners, but us Southerners panicked.

I think it’s safe to say that winter has finally arrived.

And that means it’s a great time to talk about polar animals! So I’m sharing a fun Arctic Animal Pattern Activity for first grade!

Fun Arctic Animals Pattern Building Activity

These are so fun to use at math centers, especially in the winter!

If you like this activity, don’t miss this fun snowflake math factors craft for kids and our printable Polar Animal notebooking pages!

Pick up this Arctic Animals Pattern Activity to help little learners practice building basic math patterns with a fun winter theme!

Simple Polar Animal Pattern Activity for First Grade

Recognizing and creating math patterns are a key concept in both kindergarten and first grade. Kids are often taught to recognize patterns according to frequency.

So you might have a ABABABAB pattern (one image, then another, then the first again, then the second) or you might have a AABBAABB pattern (the first image twice, the second image twice, and so on).

Arctic Animals Pattern Activity for Kids

Which is where this printable pattern activity comes in handy!

To use this pattern activity for first grade, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer Paper (I used Astrobright paper)
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Hook and loop sticky dots

Help students read each pattern by saying the name of each picture aloud.

For example, a pattern row might read “Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo, Fox, Igloo…”. Then ask “What picture comes next?”

Printable Arctic Animals Pattern Activity for Kids

When students answer “Fox!”, let them cut out the fox picture and paste it on the correct row to complete the pattern!

Do the same with the other patterns.

Arctic Animal Pattern Activity for Kids

Since some of the patterns follow an ABAB  structure and others follow an ABB or an ABC pattern, it’s good to practice the same pattern structure again and again to attain fluency before trying a different one.

You can use these as a one-time cut and paste activity or laminate them and use them with hook and loop sticky dots at math centers!

Mitten Memory: Winter Preschool Memory Game

December 3, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Winter is such a cozy time for learning with little ones. I’m a scaredy-cat about cold weather, so once the daily average dips below 50 degrees, you’ll find me inside with my kids. Probably sitting directly in front of the space heater.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun winter-themed learning! And that’s why I’m excited to share this printable winter preschool memory game! It’s so fun for helping early learners work on memory skills!

Winter Themed Preschool Memory Game for Kids

This would also make a great busy bag activity. Just print the pages, cut out the cards, and store them in a resealable bag. Perfect for waiting rooms!

Note: You’ll be printing the pages double-sided. With a memory game, it’s important to have a design on the back. Otherwise, the kids will be able to see right through the back of the paper.

Not much of a challenge then, is it?

There are 16 sets to match up in all. If that’s a few too many for your little one, feel free to start with half of the sets until the kids become more familiar with the images.

Simple Hibernation Unit Study for Elementary

November 9, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Hibernation Unit for Homeschoolers
Homeschool Unit Studies: Hibernation Unit - Look! We're Learning!
Share the fun hibernation crafts and activities in this hibernation unit study with the kids this winter!

We’re sharing another entry in our unit studies series today: a fun hibernation unit study!

Since winter time is fast approaching, I thought it would be fun to look at hibernation – how it works, what it is, and which animals do it every year.

Plus, it’s a great excuse for talking about sleep, which I desperately need more of these days. (I’m sure I’m not alone there.)

Printable Hibernation Unit Sorting Activity

Even if your students are always on the move and rarely want to sleep (like mine), learning about hibernation is just plain fun!

It’s really amazing to learn about mammals that sleep most of the winter season and what they do to prepare for that time of year.

Elementary Hibernation Sorting Activity

And that’s what this hibernation unit is designed to help kids do. Plus, there’s a printable hibernation sorting activity you can pick up for free!

Read on to see how to get your copy.

If you enjoy this unit, don’t miss our bears unit study and our list of children’s books about owls!

This hibernation unit study is full of fun hibernation crafts and activities for kids!

Hibernation Unit Study for Elementary Kids

When we put together a unit study, we typically include books, crafts, printables, and more.

While I don’t always use every resource, I like to have as many as I can. That way, we can always stretch a topic out if the kids are super interested.

In this hibernation unit, you’ll find books about hibernation, crafts and activities for learning about hibernation, and a printable hibernation animals sorting activity.

There’s also a super cool hibernation facts video that explains this process in kid-friendly terms.

What is Hibernation?

Watch this video and see if students can answer the questions that follow!

1. What is hibernation? (Answer: The long sleep that some animals take during winter.)
2. Why do animals hibernate? (Answer: Because the weather gets cold and food becomes hard to find.)
3. How do animals prepare for hibernation? (Answer: As winter gets closer, they eat a lot of food to store fat that will keep them alive during winter.)
4. Why do some animals store food before winter? (Answer: These animals wake up from their hibernation to eat a little.)
5. Name a few animals that hibernate. (Answer: Bats, snakes, bears, hedgehogs, ground squirrels, groundhogs, and marmots)
6. Where do animals hibernate? (Answer: Wherever they feel safe from predators. Some hibernate in caves and some hibernate under the ground.)
7. What is the difference between sleep and hibernation? (Answer: During hibernation, the animal’s body temperature drops and its heart rate slows down. These things don’t happen during regular sleep.)
8. What is it called when animals hibernate during summer? (Answer: Aestivation)

These hibernation books for kids are awesome for studying how animals prepare for winter!

Free Winter Printables for Preschoolers

December 13, 2016 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Winter is a great time to get kids excited about learning! Especially when the weather is so awful no one wants to venture outside. 🙂

If you have older kids (like I do), it can be tough to keep your younger ones involved in your homeschooling lessons. Our preschooler always wants to be at the table with her older siblings during class, no matter what we’re learning about. I could be teaching organic chemistry and she’d want to be involved.

So I use a lot of preschool printables to keep her learning along with the older kids. If you enjoy using winter printables with your children, these free winter printables for preschoolers are a fun way to let your younger kids get involved!

And if you love these, don’t miss our printable winter sight word flashcards – perfect for working on early reading skills!
