Easy Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

September 19, 2019 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

Make some autumn memories with this easy DIY fall leaf garland kids can make!

Since fall finally made its appearance down here in the South, we decided to round up some of the fall leaves in our yard and make a garland.

I’ll admit: I’m not really one for home decor. I didn’t learn much about it as a child and I’ve been a tad stubborn about doing it as an adult.

But, after sharing this easy fall leaf garland craft with the kids, I’m committed to adding a bit more “home” to our house.

Fun and Easy Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

This is a really simple fall craft that kids will have fun making. It’s easy, it only requires a few supplies, and it adds a sweet reminder of fall to the home.

For more fun fall kids’ activities, don’t miss our list of 50 fall books kids will treasure!

Make this easy fall leaf garland craft with little ones this autumn! A perfect fall art activity for kids!

Easy Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

To make this DIY fall leaf garland craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Assorted fall leaves (choose the most colorful you can find)
  • Tempera paint (optional)
  • Paintbrushes (optional)
  • Clear tape
  • Bright yellow yarn
  • Hole puncher

Making an Easy Fall Leaf Garland

Rather than making leaves out of construction paper or some other medium, we just thought we’d hang actual leaves.

We let them dry out for a couple of weeks so they’d be easy to punch holes in.

Easy Fall Leaf Garland Craft

Choose your leaves about two weeks before you intend to make your garland. Sit them on a counter or in a plastic bag so that they’ll have plenty of time to stiffen before you make the craft.

I helped the kids place the hole punch, but they pushed the lever (which they loved).

To keep the holes from spreading and cracking the leaves, we punched them as close to the center as possible and towards the stem end.

Simple Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

Since these leaves were just brown, we wanted to add a bit more color.

Tempera paint to the rescue!

Easy Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

Fall Playdough Mats

We didn’t choose any particular art designs in advance. It was more of a “paint and see what happens” open-ended art activity.

Simple Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids to Make

All that was left to do was string the leaves on our yarn!

Painted Fall Leaf Garland Craft for Kids

When we made a fall leaf garland a few years ago, we found lots of different colored leaves.

Those were gorgeous as is, so we just hole punched them all and let the kids get started stringing the leaves on a long piece of yarn.

Making a Fall Leaf Garland

Everyone had a designated pile to work with and they took turns adding their leaves to the garland.

Threading a Fall Leaf Garland

This was such a nice afternoon activity. Threading the leaves was good fine motor practice for the kids.

Easy Painted Fall Leaf Garland Craft

We all had fun choosing leaves together. And it was nice to see something we made together hanging in the home all autumn long.

It begins with a two-page lesson that explains what ordinal numbers are and how they are used in counting.

How to Count with Ordinal Numbers Lesson

Once you read the lesson with the class, you can hand out the first set of ordinal number worksheets.

These help students learn to find the object in the correct ordinal place.

The worksheets follow the same format as the lesson, so students won’t get confused trying to understand the directions.

Since this resource is for early learners, the focus is on learning ordinal numbers from first through fifth only.

Using a Kindergarten Ordinal Number Lesson and Worksheets

The second set of worksheets lets students identify the ordinal number places in which each pumpkin stands.

Then they can write the correct ordinal number word or write the correct ordinal number place for each pumpkin.

It’s time for another entry in our second grade activity series!

This week, we’re talking about how to help second graders count and identify syllables in common words.

In second grade, we tend to start helping students read slightly longer words. And that’s when it’s good to start sounding out syllables.

To add a fun fall theme to this concept, we’re sharing a fun Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade activity!

Fun Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson

This printable activity is an excellent literacy builder for early elementary students!

And, depending on your students’ vocabulary skills, it may even be useful in third grade classes as well.

And for more early elementary learning, take a look at our Superhero States of Matter Science Lesson! It’s an excellent and easy hands-on science lab for early grades.

Help students learn to count syllables in vocabulary words with this scarecrow themed syllable counting activity!

How to Teach Syllables in Early Grades

With our second grader, we use the typical “clap it out” method to count syllables.

So we’ll have him say a word and then for each sound he hears, he claps his hands.

For example, when he says the word “amazing”, he’ll end up clapping three times: A-MAZ-ING.

That helps him see that there are three syllables in the word.

Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson for Elementary

Before we got started with the lesson, I asked my second grader if he knew what syllables were.

His response: “Oh yeah, I learned that in school.”

Me: “Really? What are they?”

Him: “They’re all the letters in a word.”

Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade Pack - Look! We're Learning!

He was really serious about that explanation.

After we talked about what syllables really were, we tried matching up the words with the right number of scarecrows.

The “clap it out” method worked beautifully!

Leaves Even and Odd for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

The concept of even and odd is one of those math topics that I know, but I don’t know how I know it, you know?

I know that 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 are odd numbers and I know that 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 are even numbers, but I have no recollection of how that concept was taught to me in the beginning.

So when it was time to teach even and odd for second grade, I was at a bit of a loss with my kids.

Each worksheet includes a group of leaves arranged in an array. That way, kids can draw lines to pair up each set.

Then they can count the total of leaves and write the number, as well as whether the number is even or odd. (Hint: If a group of leaves has an extra leaf that doesn’t have a match, then it’s an odd number!)

How to Use Leaf Even and Odd Practice Printables

One of the simplest ways to talk about even and odd numbers with kids is to teach them the concept of “pairs”. If they can match up pairs of objects, then they can learn to recognize which groups contain even and odd amounts.

The first activity page has groups of leaves with dashed lines connecting the pairs. Kids can trace the lines to learn how to pair up objects.

If all of the objects have a partner, then the total number is even. If one doesn’t have a partner, then the number is odd. Simple!

On the following two pages, there are no dashed lines. So children can draw their own lines or skip the lines entirely if they’re ready.

After matching up pairs, they can answer how many objects in all and whether the number is even or odd.
