Easy Marshmallow Edible Playdough Recipe

October 26, 2021 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When I think of an easy sensory activity, the first thing that comes to my mind is making playdough.

It doesn’t take long, it’s a quiet play material, and you can usually find a playdough recipe that smells good. It’s a total win.

Personally, though, it’s even better if the recipe is edible, because my kids always wanted to taste the dough they made.

(In fact, I remember tasting commercial playdough as a kid. Not a good experience.)

So this easy marshmallow edible playdough recipe hits all the right notes!

Easy Marshmallow Edible Playdough Recipe

This homemade playdough recipe smells good, is safe to taste, and only needs a few ingredients. Perfect!

Read on to see how to make it and to get the printable recipe.

And, for more sensory ideas, take a look at our list of 20 edible playdough recipes you can make at home!

Have some sweet sensory fun with this easy marshmallow edible playdough recipe for kids!

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Marshmallow Edible Playdough?

I said this was an easy recipe and I wasn’t bluffing.

This recipe only needs four ingredients. Four.

We totally got this.

Playing with Edible Playdough

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Mini marshmallows
  • Coconut oil
  • Powdered sugar
  • Sprinkles
Marshmallow Edible Playdough Recipe Ingredients

You probably have all of these in your house already.

And, if you don’t keep mini marshmallows in your pantry, you are seriously missing out on a simple sweet tooth fix.

Handfuls of mini marshmallows and chocolate chips are what get me through some days.

Adding Sprinkles to Marshmallow Edible Playdough

You can add food coloring if you want to color this dough.

But I love the contrast of the colorful sprinkles and the white dough, so I like to leave it as is.

How to Make Marshmallow Edible Playdough

Now to make up our batch of marshmallow playdough…

Marshmallow Edible Playdough Supplies

Start by microwaving the mini marshmallows to soften them.

Pour in the coconut oil.

Making Marshmallow Edible Playdough

Stir the oil and marshmallows together to combine them.

This is the base of the dough, but we’ll need the powdered sugar to “bind” everything together.

Simple Marshmallow Edible Playdough Recipe

When you add the powdered sugar, do it slowly. Try a few tablespoons at a time and then stir it up to check the consistency.

You want the dough to be soft but not too sticky.

How to Mix Marshmallow Edible Playdough

If it sticks to your hand and it’s hard to form it into a ball, you’ll know you need to add a bit more sugar.

How to Mix Marshmallow Playdough

Once you can form a ball that holds its shape, your dough is done!

Playing with Marshmallow Edible Playdough

All that’s left now is to add the colorful sprinkles!

Fun Marshmallow Edible Playdough Recipe for Kids

If you have a child helping you make up the playdough, let them roll the dough ball in sprinkles and then use their hands to work them in thoroughly.

How to Use Marshmallow Edible Playdough for Learning

So we have a batch of marshmallow playdough. What exactly do we do with it?

The answer is: Lots of things! Playdough is a wonderful fine motor skills builder.

Edible Playdough Made with Marshmallows

Here are some simple playdough fine motor skills activities:

  • Use a play hammer to smash the dough flat
  • Use a rolling pin to roll the dough out
  • Use plastic knives to cut and slice the dough into small pieces
  • Roll the dough into ropes and use child-safe scissors to cut them into sections

You can also use playdough to form shapes, letters, and numbers, such as with literacy mats.

This fun confetti ocean slime recipe is perfect for summer sensory play!

Easy Confetti Ocean Slime Recipe for Kids

May 11, 2021 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Summer has a definite feel to it.

Down here in the South, you can almost smell it in the air. It gets here long before the “official” start of summer.

My kids love to try all things summer-related. We’ve made ice cream desserts, popsicle learning activities, beach sand, and more.

So I thought it would be nice to share a fun confetti ocean slime recipe that would be yet another awesome summer activity for kids!

Fun Confetti Ocean Slime Recipe

This is a perfect sensory play idea for warm weather.

And what I love most about slime is that it’s basically mess-free. It doesn’t leave marks on my table. It doesn’t require that I clean up afterwards.

Once we spend a few minutes making it, the kids can have at it. Win!

Read on to get the full instructions and ingredients. Plus, there’s a printable instruction sheet too!

What Ingredients Do You Need for Ocean Slime?

This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.

This slime is made with clear glue and liquid starch. Both of these are easy to find – either online or in stores.

Heads up: If you’re looking for large bottles of clear glue, you’ll want to get to the stores before back to school season starts.

Otherwise…you might not find any.

Ocean Slime Ingredients

The blue color in this slime comes from the liquid starch, so there’s no need to add food coloring.

Blue Ocean Slime for Kids

Outside of that, all you’ll need is fine blue glitter, warm water, and your choice of confetti!

These pictures feature Peppa Pig party confetti, but you can really use any confetti you happen to have around the house.

How to Make Ocean Slime

Start by pouring the glue into a bowl.

Easy Confetti Ocean Slime

Mix in some warm water and then add the blue glitter.

How to Make Ocean Slime

Then you’ll add some of the liquid starch. Always start with less than you think you need. You can add more later.

This is kind of a balancing act, because slime doesn’t always turn out the same way.

So you’ll add water and liquid starch as you test the mixture.

Once it feels right, stir until it forms a ball and then knead it for a couple of minutes.

Add in the confetti and your ocean slime is done!

Easy Alphabet Acorn Sensory Bin for Kids

October 27, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When you want to keep preschoolers engaged in a lesson for more than…three minutes or so, sensory bins are the answer!

Every time I’ve put a sensory bin together, I’ve had to practically drag my early learners away from it.

There’s just something about having so many different textures and colors to explore that keeps little ones interested.

And that makes sensory bins a wonderful medium for introducing early literacy skills – like in this alphabet acorn sensory bin!

Easy Acorn Sensory Bin for Kids

This is such an easy, low-prep, and engaging literacy activity for autumn!

And it doesn’t make a mess, so you won’t have to clean anything up afterwards. Win!

Read on to see how to put this fall sensory bin together yourself.

And, for more fun with fall letters, take a look at our easy Name Acorn Necklace Craft!

Use this alphabet acorn sensory bin for some fun sensory play and letter recognition practice during fall!

Easy Alphabet Acorn Sensory Bin for Kids

To assemble this alphabet acorn sensory bin, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Container (I used a straw basket I already had, but a clear shoebox or a bin is fine too)
  • Acorns (Real acorns are the best, but I used these artificial acorns since we don’t have an oak tree nearby. This bin uses about three bags.)
  • Colored artificial leaves (Our bin uses these colorful acrylic leaves and acorns.)
  • Fall-themed foam pieces (This foam bead harvest mix with leaves, scarecrows, pumpkins, and candy corn is what I used.)
  • Printable Acorn Alphabet Cards (available in this post)
Simple Acorn Sensory Bin for Kids

To start, print out the acorn alphabet cards and laminate them.

You’ll need them to stand up to frequent use by little hands.

Then fill the bin with acorns.

Mix in the colored leaves and acorns, as well as the fall-themed foam beads.

Letter Acorn Themed Sensory Bin

Finally, add a few of the acorn alphabet cards.

You don’t want to put them all in at once, because you want the letters to be part of the acorn sensory bin, not the entire focus.

Using an Alphabet Acorn Sensory Bin

One way to use them is to add in pairs of uppercase and lowercase letters (capital A and lowercase A, for example).

Then students can talk about the difference between the letters.

Or you can have a quick find the matching letter activity by picking up the capital letter and asking kids to find its lowercase mate.

Be sure to talk about the different textures, colors, and shapes of each item they pick up.

DIY Colored Moon Sand Recipe - Look! We're Learning!

Almost all kids love to play with playdough, so we’ve used preschool playdough mats a lot with our kids.

And that started us thinking about how to include more sensory play on a regular basis.

Basically, moon sand is crumbly sand that’s moldable. I’d seen it for sale in stores, but I’d never thought about making it myself.

Turns out it’s pretty easy! We decided to include a fun twist by adding some color with this DIY Colored Moon Sand Recipe!

FYI, play sand comes in a super heavy bag. If you buy a bag at a store, be sure to grab one of those rolling handcarts to transport it to the register.

Otherwise, you’ll end up with super sore arms the next day….like me.

Here’s another FYI: Do not make this on your dining room table, unless you really want a scratched table.

(We found this out the hard way.)

This is definitely an outdoor activity. We finally wised up when it was time for the kids to sink their little hands into it.

Fluffy Snowman Slime Recipe for Kids

Nothing says “winter” like snow.

Easy Scented Pumpkin Pie Playdough Recipe for Kids

October 24, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Confession time: I didn’t really eat pumpkin pie as a child.

I’m from the Deep South and, down here, we tend to eat more sweet potato pie than pumpkin. At least in my family. (I honestly don’t have enough space here to write about the wonders of sweet potato pie.)

After I became an adult, though, a good friend of mine made a pumpkin pie and I finally had a taste.

It was delicious.

So since we enjoyed making apple pie playdough earlier this fall, I thought this easy scented pumpkin pie playdough recipe would be a nice addition to our fall sensory activities!

Easy Fall Preschool Color Matching Activity

September 12, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Fall is one of the best times of year to explore with preschoolers. The weather is cooler, the animals are moving around and storing up food for winter, and the colors are gorgeous.

If you live in a part of the world where you see fall foliage, autumn is a wonderful time to talk about colors with little ones.

But, even if you don’t, you can use this simple fall preschool color matching activity to reinforce that concept with early learners!

Easy Preschool Fall Color Matching Activity for Kids

This is such a simple and fun hands-on activity for toddlers and preschoolers. And it only takes a few minutes to set it up.

Easy Fall Preschool Color Matching Activity

To make this fall preschool coloring matching activity, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Fall-themed paint sample cards
  • Scissors
  • Fall leaf foam glitter stickers

Easy Fall Leaf Color Matching Activity

To get started, simply use the scissors to cut the paint sample strips apart. You’ll want to have one color on each strip.

If your preschoolers are working on scissor skills, hand them a pair of child-safe scissors and let them help with this part.

Simple Fall Leaf Color Matching Activity for Kids

Be sure to use fall-themed colors, so you’re looking for deep reds, muted greens, and bright yellows.

Easy Fall Color Matching Activity for Preschoolers

Pour out several fall leaf foam stickers onto the table. I love the glittery foam stickers, but you could also use felt or paper stickers if you prefer.

Since the glitter sticks up a bit, working with them makes a nice sensory activity for little hands.

Easy Fall Color Matching Activity

Let the kids try to match up the color stickers with the colored paint strips.

You can work with one color family at a time, especially when you’re first beginning to talk about colors, or you can combine them all and see how quickly the kids can match up the leaves and paint strips.

This would also make a great on-the-go busy bag for active toddlers and preschoolers!

Phonics Fun! Printable Phonics Flashcards for Kids

April 22, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Phonics are kind of a controversial topic in education these days. Some kids learn to read without ever practicing phonics, but some benefit by learning to master common phonics skills.

Personally, I’m for whatever helps a child learn to read.

Some of my kids took to reading right away. Others learned beginning sounds, digraphs, and suffixes before learning to read fluently.

So I thought these printable phonics flashcards might be useful to some of you as well!

Preschool Worksheets: Big and Small Worksheets for Preschool

April 15, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Pick up these cute cupcake big and small worksheets for preschool to make learning about size differentiation fun!

I remember the first time Piglet showed that she was starting to notice differences in sizes. She said “Wow! Mommy! Your hand is much more huger than mine!” *giggle*

Since she has older siblings, she seemed to become aware of the differences between bigger and smaller pretty quickly.

After all, she wasn’t able to do a lot of things her brothers and sisters could because they were “bigger” than her.

To reinforce the idea of size differentiation, I decided to try some big and small worksheets for preschool. And I thought why not add a cute cupcake theme and make them free while I was at it!

5 Tips for Helping Preschoolers Manage Their Emotions

February 28, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you experienced a preschool meltdown today? We have four children and our youngest is now six, so we’re past the preschool stage. But I remember it so well.

I’d see one of my kids go running by having the time of their life. 30 seconds later, they’re dissolving into a puddle of tears, generally crying so hard that they couldn’t tell me what was wrong.

Initially, I thought I just had emotional kids. (I can be pretty emotional myself, so it was no secret where they got it from.) But it’s difficult to help preschoolers manage their emotions in general.

5 Ways to Help Preschoolers Manage Their Emotions

After all, understanding emotions can be difficult at any age, but for little ones, it is even more challenging. Between the newness of their developing emotions and their limited vocabulary, it can be very frustrating for them to communicate what they are feeling.

Helping preschoolers understand their emotions and teaching them the right way to express those feelings is an important task for parents and caregivers. Here are some tips that can help as you navigate emotions with your little one.

Read on to get some helpful tips for teaching your preschooler to manage his or her feelings. And if your child struggles with worry, don’t miss our printable Worry Journal for kids!

Struggling to help your little one calm down? Try these five tips for helping preschoolers manage their emotions!

5 Tips for Helping Preschoolers Manage Their Emotions

Never Refer to an Emotion as “Bad” or “Wrong”

The first thing to remember when you’re helping preschoolers manage their emotions is that there is simply no such thing as a bad emotion. However, there are inappropriate reactions to emotions. By labeling an emotion as bad or wrong, you run the risk of your child taking that label upon themselves.

If your preschooler is worried that he or she is feeling something “bad”, they are far more likely to keep their emotions bottled up and will face even more challenges to understand and cope with emotions.

Take Time to Talk About Your Emotions and Reactions

Using age-appropriate conversation, share how you feel from time to time with your preschooler and what has caused that feeling. If your emotions are tied to something your child did, make it clear that it is about the action and not about them as a person.

For example, explaining that you love her very much, but backtalk when you’ve asked her to do something makes you feel upset and raise your voice, helps to put the focus on your emotion and reaction toward the action. Be sure to explain your happiness and joy, as well as anger and sadness.

Help Them Expand Their Emotional Vocabulary

As your preschooler begins to mature, he or she can begin to explore more words that relate to emotions. Happy, sad, and angry can begin to develop into excitement, disappointment, and frustration as they start to understand that their emotions are more complex.

Use these descriptors as you talk about your own emotions and relate them to those base emotions to help your child make sense of these expanded feelings.

Using Spanish Feelings Flashcards with Kids

Our English and Spanish feelings flashcards are a great way to help little ones learn to describe their emotions! Pick up a set for your child here.

Guide Them to Identifying Their Feelings

Instead of using phrases like “I know you are angry”, open up a conversation that will allow your child to identify their own feelings and emotions. Sometimes, a reaction might lead us to think our child is angry or sad, when they’re really feeling frustrated or have had their feelings hurt by someone else.

By giving them the power to own and name their emotions, you’ll build the coping skills that will help them along as they move slowly toward adulthood.

Give Them Outlets of Expression Beyond Just Words

Sometimes it can be hard to communicate how a child is feeling through words. If your little one can’t express himself or herself clearly, ask your child to draw a picture of what happened or how they feel. Role playing with dolls or action figures can sometimes be effective for getting to the bottom of a tricky emotion.

As they show you the scenario leading up to an upset or sadness, you can help them by asking questions that lead them to use their words to express emotions.

Helping preschoolers understand their emotions is just the first step in a long process of navigating feelings and reactions throughout their lives. Remember to keep things simple and get on their level, then expand the concepts as they mature and grow.

Preschool Worksheets: Preschool Sorting Worksheets

January 31, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you ever taken a preschooler out to shop for clothes?

My four-year-old has recently developed a severe aversion to particular colors and textures, so shopping for clothing is…an interesting experience.

Here’s a sample exchange:

Me: “What do you think about this shirt?”

Her: *waves both arms frantically* “No, Mom! I only like purple right now!”

Clearly, she knows her colors.

Preschoolers typically do a great job at distinguishing colors, sizes, and quantities when it comes to things they prefer, but learning to sort common objects by color or amount can still be a little tricky.

So I’m sharing a brand new set of preschool worksheets today: color and number preschool sorting worksheets!

Preschool Sorting Worksheets for Colors and Numbers

These printables are a great way to give little learners some practice in recognizing colors, counting from one to four, and classifying items as sets – all in one activity!

Plus, they get a little fine motor practice too!

Once the kids cut out the color cubes, they can practice gluing the correct number of cubes in the right section on each worksheet.

Color Cube Sorting Worksheets

You might want to have the kids match up the cubes before gluing.

That way, they’ll get a little extra practice and they’ll have time to switch any cubes around before gluing them down.

(Hint: If your child tends to have a meltdown over mistakes – like mine – the extra practice is totally worth it.)

Colorful Cube Sorting Worksheets

Each worksheet has a section for different colors and quantities of color cubes.

There are enough color cubes on the two pages to fill all four worksheets – with several left over.

So if you want the kids to get a little extra scissor skills practice, they can work on cutting out the extra cubes afterward!

I don’t love winter. Not by a long shot. It’s a bit too cold for this native Floridian.

But winter is a lovely theme for preschool. Kids love working with lessons that feature snow, snowmen, icicles, penguins, and all those adorable winter animals.

So I decided to overlook my bias toward winter and share this super cute printable winter preschool activity set!

Mitten Memory: Winter Preschool Memory Game

December 3, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Winter is such a cozy time for learning with little ones. I’m a scaredy-cat about cold weather, so once the daily average dips below 50 degrees, you’ll find me inside with my kids. Probably sitting directly in front of the space heater.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun winter-themed learning! And that’s why I’m excited to share this printable winter preschool memory game! It’s so fun for helping early learners work on memory skills!

Note: You’ll be printing the pages double-sided. With a memory game, it’s important to have a design on the back. Otherwise, the kids will be able to see right through the back of the paper.

Not much of a challenge then, is it?

There are 16 sets to match up in all. If that’s a few too many for your little one, feel free to start with half of the sets until the kids become more familiar with the images.

By the way, if you don’t have room for a laminator, you can also make the cards more durable by printing them on white cardstock instead of regular printer paper.

They’ll still hold up pretty well!
