I love unit studies. They are like little versions of complete curricula for those of us who are too independent (or stubborn) to buy a boxed curriculum set. When you do a unit study, you can easily wrap Grammar, Writing, History, Science, Art, and Reading into one topic. And you get to do them all according to your child’s interests!
For example, if you want to do a unit study on bees, you can read books about bees (reading), look up information about how bees live and work (science), make a craft featuring a bee theme (art), have your child write a report on what they learned about bees (grammar and writing), and read about how mankind has used honey over the years (history). Now that’s all-in-one learning! (Just don’t forget about math!)
The only drawback with unit studies, though, is the amount of TIME it takes to plan one. The kids get to enjoy the finished product, but we the parents have the time-consuming job of finding all of these resources and getting them organized before we begin the unit. Enter New Bee Homeschoolers’ Free Comprehensive Unit Study Planner! I got a chance to preview this planner and it. is. incredible. All of the planning pages you could possibly need to put together a complete unit study and it looks good to boot!
