Sharks! – A Shark Food Chain Game

September 28, 2017 by Selena Robinson 3 Comments

My kids, like most kids, just love sharks.

They are totally fascinated with how powerful they are, how quickly they swim, and how they eat pretty much everything.

In fact, I think that last one might be the thing they like most about them.

So I was ecstatic to get a copy of the gorgeous picture book “How to Survive As a Shark” from Innovation Press! As we read the book, we learned so many things about sharks that we didn’t know before, including how they sleep and what they eat!

And that gave me the idea to turn the shark’s diet into a fun file folder game!

Read on to see how to get a copy of this shark food chain game for your students!

Shark Food Chain Game

Learn even more about marine animals with our list of beautiful books about dolphins for kids to read!

They’ll love studying how these animals survive in such a harsh environment, even when sharks are swimming around!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Learn about what sharks eat to live in this fun shark food chain file folder game!

How to Survive As a Shark: Shark Food Chain Game

Most people (me included) think that sharks are at the top of the ocean food chain.

But they’re not! There’s an animal that eats sharks!

That was just one of the cool facts we learned from the gorgeous picture book “How to Survive As a Shark” by Kristen Foote and Erica Salcedo.

By the way, if you want to get the book for your kids, you can check it out through this affiliate link: How to Survive As a Shark.

How to Survive As a Shark

In this story, a young shark gets taken under the “fin” of an older shark who’s survived some tough ocean battles over the years. He lost his eye in one and wears a wicked cool eye patch as a result.

Through the book, kids learn how sharks are born, what they eat as they grow, and what eats them! (I won’t tell! You have to read the book!)

After sharing the story together, we decided to make a simple shark food chain game to help my kids remember what sharks eat.

Shark Food Chain Game

To use this shark file folder game at home, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One file folder
  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Brass fastener
  • Glue stick

Printable Shark Food Chain Board Game

Full assembly instructions are included in the product.

Basically, you print the game and glue it inside the file folder. Page one should appear on the left side and page two should appear on the right.

Cut out the game spinner (with arrow) and the two game pieces.

If you want the spinner to really work well, print it on cardstock or you can glue it onto cardstock after printing.

Use the brass fastener to attach the arrow to the spinner and you’re ready to roll!

Studying the Shark Food Chain

With this game, players take the journey of a young shark from infancy to adulthood. Seaweed is one of the shark’s first foods.

Learning About the Shark Food Chain

As they grow, they consume larger and larger prey. As adults, sharks may eat squid and even dolphins!

Playing a Shark Food Chain Game

This game is designed for two players. Kids can use the included game pieces to travel the board.

Playing a Shark Food Chain File Folder Game

The game spinner lets them move from one to four spaces.

As they land on spaces with directions, they get to move forward or back.

Shark Food Chain File Folder Game

The first one to the end wins!

This is such a neat way to learn what sharks eat and it helps to reinforce what they learn in the book in a fun, hands-on way!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Apple Tree Counting Mat

September 9, 2016 by Selena Robinson 7 Comments

try-a-fun-way-to-teach-counting-to-your-preschooler-this-apple-tree-printable-counting-mat

Piglet, our youngest, is starting PreK this year. She is so excited about it.

Of course, she also thinks that she will begin kindergarten immediately after the first day of preschool.

Since she’s working on PreK concepts, I’ll be sharing a lot more preschool resources this year, including preschool playdough mats!

Here in the U.S., we’re all gearing up for fall, so here’s a fun Playdough Apple Tree Counting Mat you can use with your toddler or preschooler too!

PreK Apple Tree Playdough Counting Mat

Read on to see how to grab this for your students.

And for more apple fun, don’t miss our Apple Alike! Same or Different Worksheets or our Apple Preschool Counting Puzzles!

Practice counting and fine motor skills with this fun playdough apple tree counting mat!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Apple Tree Counting Mat

Here are the supplies we used for our mats: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Scotch Thermal Laminator
  • Play-Doh – 24 Pack of Colors

That’s it! You definitely want to laminate these first so that they can be reused.

Supplies For the Apple Tree Playdough Counting Mat

Since the apples are grouped on the trees in sets of four, this was a simple way to work on skip counting.

Using the Apple Tree Counting Mat

Just add four apples to each tree and count them.

Counting by Four with Apple Tree PreK Playdough Mats

Use a different color to work on counting and sorting. (How many green apples are there? How many red apples are there?)

Fall Playdough Mats

Then a little reinforcement. If there are four green apples on this tree and four green apples on this tree, how many green apples are there altogether? Oh, so four plus four is how much?

Next thing you know, your preschooler will be saying that 4 x 2 = 8. 🙂

May 6, 2016 by Selena Robinson 7 Comments

We love learning Spanish in our homeschool! And we’ve been sharing printable Spanish flashcards on the blog over the past several months.

This time, though, I wanted to share something a bit more extensive. Which is how we came up with these Spanish community helpers printables!

These are an excellent addition to a community helpers unit for preschool or early elementary grades.

Or if you’re working on learning basic Spanish vocabulary with older kids, let them work with the pronunciation guide and flashcards for memorization!

If the firefighter is a man, though, the phrase would be “el bombero“. The same is true with the phrase for doctor: a female doctor would be “la médica“, while a male doctor would be “el médico“.

A full pronunciation guide is also provided!

Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors Craft

January 21, 2016 by Selena Robinson 7 Comments

We actually had a chance of snow flurries in our forecast this week! In Georgia, that’s a huge deal. A chance of snow flurries means a state of emergency.

Turns out that we didn’t actually get any snow, which was disappointing to my kids. But we kept the snowy theme going with a fun paper snowflake craft featuring 2nd grade math factors!

Check out our winter-y math craft below!

Paper Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors Craft

Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors Craft

Before we could start talking about math factors, though, Pooh needed a quick primer on multiplication. So we talked about making equal groups – one of the ways we can teach multiplication.

Making Equal Groups in Multiplication

First, we started with a simple multiplication fact – 3 groups of 3 equals 9.

Learning 2nd Grade Math Factors

Then we learned that you can also make nine by using 1 group of 9 dots.

Listing 2nd Grade Math Factors

Which means 9 has three factors: 1, 3, 9. All three can be multiplied in different combinations to make 9.

Using Manipulatives for 2nd Grade Math Factors

Time to make our math factor snowflakes! We used our Snowflake Math Factor Printables and a set of Unifix Cubes to help Pooh visualize how to find his multiplication factors.

Making Equal Groups with Unifix Cubes

As we made equal groups of 8, 4, and 2, Pooh discovered the missing math factors that make 24: 3, 6, and 12.

Math Factors for 2nd Grade

As we discovered the missing factors, Pooh filled in his snowflake.

Making Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors

Now to cut it out!

Making Shapes with Snowflake Math Factors

Roo was in the kitchen as we worked. He came upon one of the paper scraps and declared it “a great white shark’s tooth”. Alrighty then.

Hanging Snowflake Math Factors for 2nd Grade

We added masking tape to the back and hung our snowflakes on the window.

Snowflake 2nd Grade Math Factors Craft

Ta-da! We got some “snow” after all!

This was a really fun, hands-on activity that also served as a nice way to talk about multiplication without overwhelming my 2nd grader.

2nd Grade Math Factors Snowflake Craft

If you’d like to make this craft at home, grab a set of our free Snowflake Math Factor printables! There are combinations up to 144, so you can easily use this with 2nd to 4th graders. Plus, the answers are included!
