Work on shape recognition the fun way with this cool ice cream preschool shape sorting activity!
This fun ice cream themed shape sorting activity for kids is so cool for practicing shape recognition!

When I was a kid, one of my strongest summer memories is going down to the Dairy Queen to get an OREO Blizzard.

It was my very favorite childhood treat.

(In fact, it’s taking every bit of willpower in my body not to break off from writing this post and go get one.)

Ice cream is still a classic treat for kids, especially during the summer.

And that’s why I wanted to make a fun ice cream-themed learning activity for early grades – this ice cream kindergarten shape sorting activity!

Fun Ice Cream Plane Shape Sorting Activity

This is such a fun (and low-prep) learning activity for little learners!

You only need a few minutes to prepare it and then the kids will be off and running!

Just be prepared for them to ask you for ice cream immediately afterward.

Plus, check out our cupcake letter matching activity for more “sweet” learning fun!

Help early learners recognize plane shapes with this fun ice cream kindergarten shape sorting activity!

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper or cardstock
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Hook and loop adhesive coins (optional)
  • Crayons or colored pencils (optional)
Ice Cream Shape Sorting Lesson for Kindergarten

This resource includes 12 different plane shapes for students to learn, such as:

  • Circle
  • Square
  • Triangle
  • Rectangle
  • Oval
  • Octagon
  • and six more!
Teaching Early Learners to Recognize Plane Shapes

The cones feature the shapes themselves.

And the scoops are labeled with the shape names. (I used the same color for the scoop and the shape on each cone for a little hint.)

Kindergarten Ice Cream Shape Sorting Activity

A full blackline version is included as well.

Ice Cream Shape Matching Activity for Kindergarten

And there are shape labels and shape word labels for matching. An answer key is also inside.

How to Use the Ice Cream Shape Sorting Activity

You may want to begin this lesson with an introduction to plane shapes.

Start by reviewing the four basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, and rectangle) with your class. Build from there, gradually introducing the remaining eight plane shapes.

Shape Matching Activity for Kindergarten

Talk about each shape’s name as you go along. This will help prepare your students for the matching activity.

Printable Kindergarten Shape Sorting Lesson

If you’re working with early learners who are still practicing basic shapes, stick with the shape templates that are already labeled.

Ice Cream Shape Sorting for Kindergarten

But if your students are already reading, add a little challenge with the labeling printables.

They can practice finding the correct shape name for each “cone” or finding the correct shape for each shape name “scoop”.

Sorting Plane Shapes with Early Learners

Add hook and loop adhesive stickers if you plan to reuse this lesson at centers.

20 Delicious No Churn Ice Cream Recipes

June 6, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Can we actually have summer without ice cream?

I don’t know if anyone has attempted it, but that is one science experiment I am not interested in trying.

Once the weather gets warm, it’s ice cream time. Even if it happens to be a weird heat streak in January.

I’ve always bought ice cream from the store, because I thought I’d need an ice cream maker to make ice cream at home. And I really don’t have space to store an ice cream maker.

But once I found out about no churn ice cream recipes that didn’t require an ice cream maker, I was sold.

You don't need an ice cream maker to have homemade ice cream! These delicious no churn ice cream recipes are perfect for summer treats!

It turns out that you can make actual, honest-to-goodness ice cream without an ice cream maker. No churning, no ice cream salt, nothing but some good ingredients and your favorite mix-ins.

That’s a done deal in my book.

Take a look at these ways to make no churn ice cream and see if any of the homemade ice cream recipes below catch your eye!

And for more fun with icy treats, check out our roundup of 20 homemade popsicle recipes you can make too!

Make ice cream without an ice cream maker with these easy no churn ice cream recipes! Perfect for summer!

How to Make No Churn Ice Cream Recipes at Home

The great thing about making no churn ice cream recipes is that, not only do you not need an ice cream maker or rock salt, you don’t really need any special equipment at all!

You can mix the ingredients directly in a glass baking dish. Freeze as directed in each recipe. And then serve!

That’s truly all there is to it.

I’ve had the same Pyrex glass baking dishes for years, so I can heartily recommend these. They’ll hold up forever.

And it’s great to have two of them, because you can keep one in the freezer for your ice cream and the other free for dinner casserole. (I think I cook a meal in my Pyrex dish at least three times a week.)
