How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

June 16, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

As you might be aware, we use Sign Language fairly often in our family. (For examples, see here, here, here, and here.) Many experts agree that the years from birth to age 5 are the prime years for introducing a foreign language to kids. But is it really possible to teach sign language to preschoolers?

Of course it is! Baby sign language has become extremely popular, so preschoolers are naturals as signing. But what does it take to teach ASL to very young children? Today I’m sharing a post I wrote for Learning 2 Walk that’s all about how to teach sign language to preschoolers!

Today is also another edition of the Laugh and Learn Linkup, so scroll on down to read our features from last week and the newest parenting and homeschooling posts!

How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

How to Teach Sign Language to Preschoolers

One of the biggest suggestions I can give to teach ASL to preschool-aged kids is to keep it extremely simple and relaxed. When young children have fun, they end up learning naturally! And there’s no reason why learning sign language shouldn’t be fun!

For even more tips and suggestions, visit Learning 2 Walk to read the post “How to Teach Sign Language for Preschoolers“!

5 Tips for Planning Your Homeschool Year

June 5, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Summer break is here! And for many homeschooling parents, that means it’s time for homeschool planning! Personally, I’m a planning junkie, so I take full advantage of our relaxed approach over the summer to brainstorm about what I want to cover next year and which supplies I plan to use.

Naturally, I jumped at the chance to share a post over at The Homeschool Post that’s all about homeschool planning! Today I’m sharing 5 tips for planning your homeschool year!

5 Tips for Planning Your Homeschool Year

5 Tips for Planning Your Homeschool Year

In the past, my tendency has been to completely immerse myself in shopping for curriculum, gathering resources, and making detailed lesson plans. After nearly seven years, though, I’ve (finally) learned a thing or two about what actually works when you’re planning a homeschool year.

Click on over to The Homeschool Post to read the post “5 Tips for Planning Your Homeschool Year” and spare yourself the trial-and-error approach I’ve taken! 🙂

Lovely Children’s Books about Butterflies

June 2, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Butterflies are one of my very favorite animals. They are beautiful to look at, fun to chase, and they go through one of the most amazing transformations ever observed by scientists. Free Butterfly Unit Study

May 26, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Do you have butterflies fluttering around your neighborhood? This is a great time of year to study them with your kids!

Recently, I got to share a free butterfly unit study over at Year Round Homeschooling that’s got videos, books, printables, and butterfly crafts for all ages!

Today is also Tuesday, which means it’s time for another Laugh and Learn linkup! Read on to see our favorites from last week’s party and get some new parenting and homeschooling inspiration!

Butterfly Unit Study

Free Butterfly Unit Study

I’m not a fan of caterpillars, but I love butterflies. They’re so fragile and graceful and pretty. One of the things I didn’t know, though, was that butterflies cannot fly immediately after emerging from their cocoons.

It takes about 30 minutes for their wings to fully extend upon release. Their bodies pump fluid into the wing membranes to make them stand up. Then, they’re ready to fly! Cool, right?

Learn even more fascinating details about butterflies along with your kids with the free butterfly unit study over at Year Round Homeschooling!

Homeschool Inspiration Ideas with Family Fun Friday!

May 14, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Pooh is taking his math standardized test in school this week. Since math is not his strong subject, he’s been a bit nervous. Still, we’ve managed to help him get through the process of testing (as we did with Tigger a couple of grades back).

Standardized testing can be a real challenge to kids, whether they’re in public school or homeschool. So I wanted to share a post I got to write over at The Multi Taskin’ Mom that’s all about how to help kids deal with this process.

Today is also another edition of Family Fun Friday! Scroll on down to read some great homeschool inspiration ideas!

Helping Kids Manage Standardized Testing

Here in our state, they’re using a new standardized test this year and the teachers spent a LOT of time preparing the kids to take it. However, since Pooh is in first grade, he hasn’t had a lot of practice with testing. When we homeschooled, I didn’t administer a standardized test until third grade. (I plan on resuming that policy once we return to homeschooling this fall.)

I have learned, though, that it’s important to help kids get comfortable with the testing process, especially if they have to test earlier. Stop by The Multi Taskin’ Mom to learn more about how to help kids manage standardized testing!

Helping Kids with Standardized Testing – The Multi Taskin’ Mom

And now…it’s time for Family Fun Friday! 🙂

Last week, there were some great posts shared with homeschool inspiration ideas! Naturally, I’m in full school-year-planning mode, so I’m on the hunt for all kinds of fun ideas to do next year with the kids. Read on to see my favorites from last week!

5 Simple Activities for Early Readers

Sometimes we can overthink teaching our kids to read. While it’s true that some children need formal instruction in phonics in order to master reading, we can do a lot to encourage them by making literacy a regular event in the home.

The great news is that you don’t need an expensive early reading program to get started! There are lots of simple ways to get kids excited about reading at an early age. Stop over at Thinking Outside the Sandbox to check out five simple activities for early readers!

Why Kids Need a Student Planner

April 7, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Hi everyone! Last week, we had some great posts shared during the Laugh and Learn linkup! This week, we’re looking forward to even more great parenting and homeschooling posts!

I also wanted to share a recent post I wrote for the parenting website Thinking Outside the Sandbox and, if you’re a planning junkie like me, you’ll love it. It’s all about why kids NEED a student planner. (They really do.)

Why Kids Need a Student Planner

Why Kids Need a Student Planner

Honestly, the concept of student planners was fairly new to me until recently. Last fall, before we decided to take a break from homeschooling, I made a few simple planners for my kids to use. Tigger took to it right away, but the boys were a little reluctant. (They were in first grade and kindergarten, respectively.)

After the kids went to public school, I noticed that Tigger’s teacher issued a bound student planner and I noticed that it had an extremely positive effect on her view of her assignments. Now that I know more about how they work, I’m convinced that kids need student planners. And when we return to homeschooling, I plan to use them with all three of my older children.

To read about why I think student planners are great, visit Thinking Outside the Sandbox to read “Why Kids Need a Student Planner“!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Reluctant Writers: Writeshop Junior Review

March 9, 2015 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

This is a conversation on behalf of WriteShop. Opinions are 100% my own.

Do you have any reluctant writers in your family? We do. Tigger is an avid reader, but a hesitant writer. I understand. I’m exactly the same way. 🙂

So I was thrilled when we got a chance to try the homeschool writing program: Writeshop Junior! It’s a comprehensive creative writing program for upper elementary kids!

Check out our Writeshop Junior review to see how the program helped us make creative writing fun!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

One of my favorite things about the WriteShop curriculum is that literally everything is explained for you. What to print, how to assemble it, and how to teach each section. It’s super simple to use.

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

The curriculum has a unique way to introduce the basic concept of writing a letter. Kids can color code each section of the letter to help them remember the basics: body, date, salutation, closing, and signature.

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

Then we made a fun parts of a letter robot, which Tigger assembled (in order) and then colored. After that, she understood where everything goes on a letter without having to write an endless amount of letters herself. 🙂

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

WriteShop also includes plenty of reading work to help kids concentrate on reading good literature. I always feel that grammar is learned by lots and lots of reading. Since Tigger loves books, she found the reading logs and took off running! (The book she read for this assignment was “Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One” by Judy Blume.)

I’ll tell you – there’s no better sound than hearing your child ask, “Can I go and read so I can complete my reading log, Mama?” That’s the sound of a bookworm developing!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

Another part of WriteShop that both Tigger and I loved was the Grammar Folders. All of the templates (and assembly instructions) are provided for you. And they are a great way for kids to get involved in their own lessons and take responsibility for studying.

Whenever Tigger was confused about when to use which quotation mark, she could just consult the folder herself for a quick reminder. The folder templates even come with detachable bookmarks!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

After a few weeks of introductory work, it was time to actually begin creative writing! Since the program opens with such a gentle introduction to the concept, though, Tigger was ready and not overwhelmed at all!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

As we got further along into the program, the assignments became longer, which I thought was a great thing. During Unit 3, Tigger got to use several words from a noun bank to write a story based in the Amazon jungle. Here’s her story:

Maria and Julio live in Brazil. They decided to explore the Brazilian rainforest. They packed up and headed for the Amazon jungle first. They got a chance to swing on lots of vines. They packed hammocks for the nights they traveled. As they set them up, Maria pointed out a bat family flying across the night sky.

The next morning they headed for the Brazilian rainforest. Julio found a diamond. He put it in his backpack. Maria and Julio also discovered maggots on the ground. They rode a boat down a waterfall. They even picked up a tarantula! They also climbed up a tree and found a sloth!

Before they went to sleep that night, they sat up in their hammocks looking at the pictures they’d taken. They both agreed it was the best time they’d ever had!

These Grand Canyon books for kids provide a beautiful look at this natural wonder!

Homeschool Unit Studies: Grand Canyon Unit Study

February 17, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Recently, the kids and I got to go to the Grand Canyon! Well, it was on YouTube, but still… 🙂

Actually, I’d love to take them one day, but for now we’ll have to “see” it by learning about it! Since I’ve never visited this natural wonder myself, I was amazed to learn more about it: how large it is, how it was formed, and what kinds of animals live there.

We collected some of the best resources we’ve found into this Grand Canyon unit study! I hope you and your kids love it as much as we did!

If you enjoy this, check out some of our other homeschool unit studies!

The kids first started getting interested in the Grand Canyon as we read the book “Geronimo Stilton: The Race Across America“. The book talked a bit about the canyon, but the picture didn’t really do the canyon justice. So I had to look up some great resources to share with them. Here are some of the learning ideas we’ve found:
