Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Printables

Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Printables
Monster Truck Measurement

Now that we’re winding down first grade with Roo (yay!), I’ve been looking through the math objectives to make sure we touch on as many topics as possible. One of the major math concepts we still had to discuss was: measurement.

For Roo, though, life begins and ends with movement. So I wanted to make learning about measurement as fun as possible. Time to add in some monster trucks with a fun set of monster truck themed measurement for first grade printables!

Printable Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Lesson

These are a wonderful way to practice using rulers to measure to the nearest inch, half-inch, and quarter inch, especially if you have active kids who love all things transportation.

Check out our printable Monster Truck Measurement lesson and get a set of your own for FREE! And, for more ways to make math fun, take a look at our outdoor sidewalk chalk math game!

All you have to do is print the worksheets and then follow the instructions!

Monster Truck Measurement Lesson for Kids

Kids can choose from measuring to the nearest inch, the nearest half-inch, or the nearest quarter-inch. So these work well for teaching measurement for first grade, but also measuring skills for second grade and rising third grade students.

This product also includes a full answer key, so kids can check their work!

Printable Measurement to the Nearest Inch Lesson for Kids

Monster Truck Measurement for First Grade Printables Lesson

Since it was Roo’s first time working on this topic, we started with learning to measure to the nearest inch.

Using Measurement for First Grade Printables

After we talked about the importance of lining up the first line on the ruler with the start of the object, Roo was off and running!

I encouraged him to draw a line from the start of the object to the point at which it lined up with the ruler, and then the same with the end of the object.

Measurement for First Grade Printables Activity

The instructions say to measure to the nearest inch, so it was also a good time to talk about estimation. After Roo measured each line of trucks, he wrote down the number on the lines. Easy peasy!

Measurement for First Grade Printables Pack

Since Pooh is in second grade, he worked on measuring to the nearest half-inch.

Learning with Measurement for First Grade Printables

And he ended up learning that .5 and 1/2 are the same thing! (We’re already working on third grade objectives, albeit unconsciously…lol.)

25. Set up a simple store with your kids! (Directions below!)

Fun Money Activities for Second Grade – Set Up a Store!

What money lesson is complete without a game of “Store”? Usually kids learn about the concept of money when we go shopping.

They ask us for toys and we say “No, we don’t have money for that.” Then they realize: money = the ability to buy toys. 🙂

That’s a great place to start teaching them about money!

Money Activities for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

To set up our “store”, I asked the kids to go to their rooms and pick three things each. They came back with their most prized possessions. It was actually pretty cute.

Then I just arbitrarily assigned prices to each item using sticky notes. And our store was complete!

Money Activities for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

Now I might skimp on my store “shelves”, but I try to use realistic play money. (Ours is from Learning Resources.) I think it’s important for kids to learn what actual coins look like so they can recognize them in real life.

It’s somewhat ironic to be teaching with dollars and coins when we almost always use cards now, but it’s so important that kids understand how money works.

That’s a much easier lesson to learn with coins than cards. I mean, you can swipe cards all day without actually realizing how much money you spend. (Ask me how I know…lol.)

Money Activities for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

When we make “purchases” in our store, we add up the total using a calculator, count out our money, and we’re off!

Another way we like to teach money in second grade is by playing Monopoly Junior. It’s a fun and easy way for younger kids to learn about concepts such as buying and selling, property, and budgeting.

Preschool Worksheets: Preschool Sorting Worksheets

January 31, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you ever taken a preschooler out to shop for clothes?

My four-year-old has recently developed a severe aversion to particular colors and textures, so shopping for clothing is…an interesting experience.

Here’s a sample exchange:

Me: “What do you think about this shirt?”

Her: *waves both arms frantically* “No, Mom! I only like purple right now!”

Clearly, she knows her colors.

Preschoolers typically do a great job at distinguishing colors, sizes, and quantities when it comes to things they prefer, but learning to sort common objects by color or amount can still be a little tricky.

So I’m sharing a brand new set of preschool worksheets today: color and number preschool sorting worksheets!

Preschool Sorting Worksheets for Colors and Numbers

These printables are a great way to give little learners some practice in recognizing colors, counting from one to four, and classifying items as sets – all in one activity!

Plus, they get a little fine motor practice too!

Read on to see how to get your set.

Once the kids cut out the color cubes, they can practice gluing the correct number of cubes in the right section on each worksheet.

Color Cube Sorting Worksheets

You might want to have the kids match up the cubes before gluing.

That way, they’ll get a little extra practice and they’ll have time to switch any cubes around before gluing them down.

(Hint: If your child tends to have a meltdown over mistakes – like mine – the extra practice is totally worth it.)

Colorful Cube Sorting Worksheets

Each worksheet has a section for different colors and quantities of color cubes.

There are enough color cubes on the two pages to fill all four worksheets – with several left over.

Superhero States of Matter for Second Graders Science Lesson

December 20, 2018 by Selena Robinson 7 Comments

Superhero States of Matter Printable Pack

It’s time for another of our second-grade activities this week and today is all about states of matter for second graders.

Superheroes are all the rage right now and Pooh is a huge fan of them as well. So, when it was time to talk about states of matter in science, I thought I’d add a little “superpower” to our lesson. And I’m sharing it with all of you today!

Superhero States of Matter Printable Science Lesson for Kids

Read on to see how we learned about states of matter with our Superhero States of Matter Printable Pack! By the way, be sure to grab our free Superhero Student Planner Pages as well!

Superhero States of Matter for Second Grade

This printable second grade science lesson includes everything you need to demonstrate the three states of matter with a simple experiment.

Printable States of Matter for Second Grade Lesson

The supply list tells you what you’ll need and the instructions, which are written to students, explain how to perform each step.

Printable observation sheets allow students to analyze the experiment’s results.

How to Use the Superhero States of Matter for Second Graders Science Lesson

In the second grade, one of the science objectives to cover involves discussing the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.

To help Pooh see how matter can change state and to help him grasp the concept, we did a simple science experiment with water.

States of Matter for Second Graders

The prodcut explains exactly how to do the experiment – step by step. It’s written in a way that second-graders should be able to understand the directions on their own.

But a couple of the steps require adult supervision, so this activity should not be done independently.

States of Matter for Second Graders

We started by observing how water changes from a liquid to a solid after freezing.

States of Matter for Second Graders

Then Pooh wrote down his observations.

States of Matter for Second Graders

After the ice melted, we observed how the water had changed (once again) into a liquid.

States of Matter for Second Graders

Then it was time to learn about the third state of matter: gas! (This is where kids need adult supervision.)

States of Matter for Second Graders

As the water slowly boiled away, Pooh was excited to learn that it was evaporating – converting itself to steam (a gas). He wrote down his final observations and reviewed the experiment’s results.

States of Matter for Second Graders

Look! An actual gap-toothed smile!

Pooh had a blast with this and it was a “super” way to learn about the three states of matter in an hands-on manner.

The Jungle Book Movie Study Printable for Kids

December 17, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My daughters are huge fans of the movie The Jungle Book. I mean HUGE fans. They ask me to rewatch it all the time.

Because I’m a child of the 80s, I was initially resistant to the idea of The Jungle Book being remade. Cartoon Baloo singing “The Bare Necessities” is good stuff.

But once I sat down and watched it with them, I could understand the appeal. It’s a great film. And it’s also an excellent opportunity to learn a thing or two.

So I’m sharing a printable The Jungle Book movie study that you can use with your kids while you watch this film. After all, if they’re going to watch something over and over again, they might as well learn something, right?

The Jungle Book Printable Movie Study Activity for Kids

Keep reading to see how to grab this printable for your kids! I’m sure they’ll love it as much as mine do.

  • Copy of The Jungle Book (2016 film)

The Jungle Book Movie Study for Kids

In this movie study, you’ll find four learning printables that include both ELA and science concepts.

By the way, if you’re doing a jungle unit study, this would be a perfect add-on activity, particularly if you include the original book by Rudyard Kipling as a read-along.

The Jungle Book Movie Study Discussion for Kids

An answer key is included in the study for two of the activities, but I wanted to keep the discussion questions more open-ended. If the kids don’t get the answers “right”, encourage them to rewatch it and find out what they missed.

The Jungle Book Printable Movie Study

There are 13 discussion questions included in the study. For younger children, you might just discuss the questions and answers together. Older kids can write or type their answers. Or you could just sit on the floor and talk about it as a family.

Kids will love to learn some cool facts about tigers in the Tiger learning activity.

Printable The Jungle Book Movie Study for Kids

But The Jungle Book has more than just tigers in it! With the Animals of Jungle Book printable, they’ll get to test their knowledge about animal diets to figure out which animals eat what.

Circling back to the film, the Character analysis worksheet lets the kids come up with their own ways to describe the principal characters of the movie. This is a great ELA activity for story retelling!

Snow Globe Grammar: Parts of Speech Sorting Activity

December 13, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I am a huge grammar nerd. I’ve always loved learning about language and how we use it.

My oldest is a fellow ELA junkie, but my middle kids are…less enthusiastic about learning the rules of lexicon. Plus, I just wanted to make a basic ELA lesson more fun, especially for our rising second grader.

So we came up with this hands-on parts of speech sorting activity: Snow Globe Grammar! This is a perfect way to introduce different parts of speech to young learners – with a fun winter theme.

Elementary Snow Globe Parts of Speech Sorting Game

If you use literacy centers, this would be an excellent prep and reuse activity. Or if you wanted to make it into a one-time lesson, you could use it as a cut-and-paste activity for early grades.

Read on to see how to get your copy of this parts of speech sorting lesson! And, if you’d like more practice with ELA and foreign language, don’t miss our printable Spanish verb flashcards!

The product features printed English and Spanish time phrases, along with tracing sentences and a bonus set of Spanish telling time flashcards! A pronunciation guide for saying the Spanish phrases correctly is also included.

Printable Spanish Telling Time Worksheets for Kids

As you’ll see, the Spanish way of telling time is fairly simple. In English, we use “o’ clock” to identify time based on the numbers on the clock face.

Printable Spanish Telling Time Worksheets

In Spanish, though, people just refer to the number of hours. So instead of 1 o’clock, in Spanish you’d say “Es la una“, which literally means “It is one.” No “o’clock” needed!

After 1 o’clock, Spanish time phrases include “Son las dos” (It is two.), “Son las tres” (It is three), and so on.
