Counting is one of the most important skills kids learn in early grades.

Students also need to learn how to use ordinal numbers to assign sequential order to objects in a line.

Young children usually have a pretty good idea of what “first” means already.

Just try to give someone else something ahead of them. They’ll shout “I was first!” It’s the other numbers that might need a little practice, right?

This kindergarten ordinal number lesson can help!

Fun Pumpkin Themed Ordinal Number Worksheets for Kindergarten

This is a complete math lesson on how to count with ordinal numbers for early learners.

It begins with a two-page lesson that explains what ordinal numbers are and how they are used in counting.

How to Count with Ordinal Numbers Lesson

Once you read the lesson with the class, you can hand out the first set of ordinal number worksheets.

These help students learn to find the object in the correct ordinal place.

Pumpkin Printable Ordinal Number Practice

The worksheets follow the same format as the lesson, so students won’t get confused trying to understand the directions.

Since this resource is for early learners, the focus is on learning ordinal numbers from first through fifth only.

Using a Kindergarten Ordinal Number Lesson and Worksheets

The second set of worksheets lets students identify the ordinal number places in which each pumpkin stands.

Then they can write the correct ordinal number word or write the correct ordinal number place for each pumpkin.

Need to save on ink? Use the line art version, which is also included.

Plus, you can have the class color the worksheets afterward, which is always fun.

It’s time for another entry in our second grade activity series!

This week, we’re talking about how to help second graders count and identify syllables in common words.

In second grade, we tend to start helping students read slightly longer words. And that’s when it’s good to start sounding out syllables.

To add a fun fall theme to this concept, we’re sharing a fun Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade activity!

Fun Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson

This printable activity is an excellent literacy builder for early elementary students!

And, depending on your students’ vocabulary skills, it may even be useful in third grade classes as well.

And for more early elementary learning, take a look at our Superhero States of Matter Science Lesson! It’s an excellent and easy hands-on science lab for early grades.

Help students learn to count syllables in vocabulary words with this scarecrow themed syllable counting activity!

How to Teach Syllables in Early Grades

With our second grader, we use the typical “clap it out” method to count syllables.

So we’ll have him say a word and then for each sound he hears, he claps his hands.

For example, when he says the word “amazing”, he’ll end up clapping three times: A-MAZ-ING.

That helps him see that there are three syllables in the word.

Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson for Elementary

Before we got started with the lesson, I asked my second grader if he knew what syllables were.

His response: “Oh yeah, I learned that in school.”

Me: “Really? What are they?”

Him: “They’re all the letters in a word.”

Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade Pack - Look! We're Learning!

He was really serious about that explanation.

After we talked about what syllables really were, we tried matching up the words with the right number of scarecrows.

The “clap it out” method worked beautifully!

Then students can draw lines to match the words with the correct number of scarecrows to show the right number of syllables.

Leaves Math: Even and Odd for Second Grade

August 27, 2018 by Selena Robinson 8 Comments

Leaves Even and Odd for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

The concept of even and odd is one of those math topics that I know, but I don’t know how I know it, you know?

I know that 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 are odd numbers and I know that 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 are even numbers, but I have no recollection of how that concept was taught to me in the beginning.

So when it was time to teach even and odd for second grade, I was at a bit of a loss with my kids.

Printable Even and Odd for Second Grade

That’s just one more reason why I’m so thankful to be homeschooling. It helps me “re-learn” some things that I just know so that I can explain them to my kids and others.

Check out how we learned about even and odd numbers and grab a fun fall-themed learning resource to help you work on this concept with your kids!

Printable Even and Odd Practice Printables

This product includes three separate leaf-themed even and odd practice worksheets.

Printable Even and Odd Math Practice for Second Grade

Each worksheet includes a group of leaves arranged in an array. That way, kids can draw lines to pair up each set.

Leaves Even and Odd Math Practice

Then they can count the total of leaves and write the number, as well as whether the number is even or odd. (Hint: If a group of leaves has an extra leaf that doesn’t have a match, then it’s an odd number!)

Leaf Themed Even and Odd Practice for Second Grade

A full answer key is also provided.

Fall Leaf Themed Even and Odd Practice for Second Grade

So, if you like, you can print the answer keys for kids to check their own progress!

How to Use Leaf Even and Odd Practice Printables

One of the simplest ways to talk about even and odd numbers with kids is to teach them the concept of “pairs”. If they can match up pairs of objects, then they can learn to recognize which groups contain even and odd amounts.

Leaves Even and Odd for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

The first activity page has groups of leaves with dashed lines connecting the pairs. Kids can trace the lines to learn how to pair up objects.

If all of the objects have a partner, then the total number is even. If one doesn’t have a partner, then the number is odd. Simple!

Leaves Even and Odd for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

On the following two pages, there are no dashed lines. So children can draw their own lines or skip the lines entirely if they’re ready.

After matching up pairs, they can answer how many objects in all and whether the number is even or odd.

Leaves Even and Odd for Second Grade - Look! We're Learning!

Pooh loved this activity! And I think repeating it a couple of times will help him learn to memorize which numbers are even and which are odd.

I love teaching shapes to early learners. It’s just plain fun.

There are shapes all around us! So, once you introduce basic shapes to your preschoolers, expect them to point them out everywhere they look.

*Pointing to a window* – “Look, Mommy! A square!”

*Pointing to a plate* – “Look, Mommy! A circle!”

*Me pointing to the toddler bed in which mine should take a nap* – “Look! A rectangle! Don’t you want to get in it?”

(Doesn’t work, by the way.)

These farm shape playdough mats are great for building fine motor skills and shape recognition!

Plus, they’re a nice, quiet learning activity for kids to work with on their own.

Free Fall Reading Journal for Second Grade

Reading is a huge part of our homeschooling experience. I’m a bookworm and nothing would make me happier than to raise four little bookworms of my own.

This printable fall reading journal for kids is a simple way to help children analyze the stories they read!

On the cover page is a spot for kids to write their names on their journals.

The journal includes one cover page and eight journal prompts: two to be used each week.

Fall Reading Journal Pages for Kids

The first prompt asks students to identify the title of the book, the author, the main character, the setting, the problem, and the resolution. Identifying problem and resolution are the stepping stones to analyzing plot.

On the second prompt page, kids can express their opinions about what they’ve read by explaining what they liked and didn’t like about the story.

They can also flex their creative writing muscles by rewriting the story’s ending their own way.

Since there are four journal sets in the product, you can use this reading journal for an entire month.

Simply print it three times to cover the entire fall season! If you use the journal each month for three months, kids will have read and analyzed 12 stories!

How to Use a Reading Journal for Second Grade

Fall Themed Reading Journal for Second Grade

For this activity, my second-grader decided to read The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food. One of my favorites from childhood, too. 🙂

Fall Themed Reading Journal for Second Grade

After reading the book, Pooh started working on his journal. Since we’re just beginning second grade, I don’t mind letting him look back at the story to recall details for his journal pages.

As the year progresses, though, my goal is for him to remember the details on his own. I think as we use the journals more often, he’ll get an idea of what to look for as he reads.

Your preschooler will love working on fine motor skills and number sense with these beach number 0-9 playdough mats!

These beach themed number playdough mats are fun for practicing recognizing numbers from 0 to 9!

Summer break is coming up, and I’m in a “beachy” mood. So I decided to whip up some fun Beach 0-9 Number Playdough Mats!

Piglet is starting Tot school this fall and she can recite the ABCs and count to 10. But she doesn’t recognize the letters and numbers yet, which means it’s time to get to work!

Fun Preschool Beach Number Literacy Mats

I love using playdough to reinforce number recognition, because it’s great for improving fine motor skills, it provides good sensory input, and (most of all) it’s quiet.

She’ll sit there and play quietly with playdough mats for a good 30 minutes. Win!

If you love these, take a look at our Fall Alphabet and Number Literacy Mats too!

These printable beach number literacy mats are perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners!

To use these beach number playdough mats, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Laminator
  • Playdough (or make your own with this edible playdough recipe)

Working with playdough is a great way for kids to build fine motor skills – the same skills they’ll need to write numbers and letters later on.

Printable Beach Number Playdough Mats

With these mats, kids can make playdough “snakes” by rolling the dough back and forth between both hands.

They, they can lay the dough out over the shape of each number.

Beach Playdough Mats for Learning Numbers

You’ll want to laminate the mats before you get started or else they’ll only last for one session. Trust me.

Beach Themed Number Playdough Mats

Since each mat features only one number, you can use them along with a number of the day lesson.

This allows kids to focus on recognizing one number at a time.

How to Use Literacy Mats with Early Learners

Literacy mats are wonderful for early learners – from toddlers to kindergartners.

You can use them when reviewing letters or numbers. And you can use them when you’re covering a thematic unit (beaches, insects, transportation, etc.)

Beach Number Literacy Mats for Preschool

The key here is to keep the learning open-ended and relaxed.

As long as the students get to work with the playdough and practice forming letters and numbers, they’re doing great.

If they don’t remember each letter or number right away, they will over time.

Preschool Playdough Mats: Ladybug Playdough Mats

March 19, 2018 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Ladybug Preschool Playdough Mats
These printable ladybug playdough mats are so fun for preschool motor skill practice!

Preschoolers (and adults, for that matter) love playing with playdough! And, by the way, when you need something to occupy your kids quietly, playdough is a wonderful resource. It’s quiet, it’s easy to clean up, and it’s affordable.

On a personal note – I just want to know: Are my kids the only ones who mix up ALL the playdough colors? I really struggled to find some dough that looked decent for this post and it was tough! Out of the 20 cans of playdough in our house, I found one that was actually the color on the lid. One. Someone please tell me this is normal.

Ladybug Playdough Mats

Even though kids like to use playdough to make all kinds of wacky colors, playdough can be much more than a time-filler for kids. It can be used to reinforce fine motor skill development, to encourage literacy, and to provide some much-needed sensory input.

So, I wanted to add a few more preschool playdough mats with a fun spring theme: ladybug playdough mats! These are awesome for toddlers and preschoolers who are learning about spring and how to recognize circles!

Read on to get yours free! And check out our Over the Rainbow Playdough Mats for more spring sensory fun!
