Printable Activities for The Grouchy Ladybug

March 1, 2018 by Selena Robinson 12 Comments

Make a fun ladybug counting craft with these free printable activities for The Grouchy Ladybug!

Spring is finally here! And it’s a great time of year to read one of our favorite children’s books: The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle. As we read the story, we talked a bit about how ladybugs are beautifully designed with colorful spots and lines.

And that’s when I decided to share a few printable activities for The Grouchy Ladybug that help kids learn to work with numbers and fractions!

Ladybug Counting and Math Activity

Ladybugs are so perfectly divided into quarters that they make wonderful math counting frames and fraction templates. And that’s what you’ll see in these printable ladybug math activities!

Read on to see how to get this set for free! And for more fun with ladybugs, don’t miss our easy coffee filter ladybug craft!

Reading The Grouchy Ladybug with Kids

Our kids love reading The Grouchy Ladybug. They always laugh at how cantankerous the ladybug is at the beginning.

Activities for the Grouchy Ladybug

He’s just mean and stubborn and unnecessarily contentious.

But after an encounter with a much, much, much larger animal (a whale), he is sufficiently chastened to show a little gratitude to his fellow ladybug.

Printable Ladybug Math Lesson for Kids

To take the ladybug theme a bit farther, we created a couple of hands-on math activities for kids.

Ladybug Fraction Printable Activity

In one of the math activities, we had the boys color ladybug fraction templates.

Hands-On Ladybug Fraction Activity

They took turns creating basic fractions on their ladybugs.

Hands-On Learning about Fractions with Kids

They could show 1/4.

Simple Ladybug Fractions Activity

Or they could show 3/4.

Learning about Simple Fractions with Kids

Or they could work with the halves and show 1/2. You can also have kids use all of the pieces to discuss what the word “whole” means in mathematics and that fractions are simply “part” of a whole piece.

Printable Ladybug Math Lesson

Then we started working with our ladybug “spots”.

Printable Ladybug Counting Activity

After laminating the pages and cutting them out, we used spots on either side of the ladybug to practice counting, basic addition, and subtraction with the ladybug spots.

As they added up the number of spots on each side, they learned a few ways to add and reach 10. Plus, there are a few extra spots in case of any whoopsies while cutting.

Rhyme Time! Printable Rhyming Literacy Puzzles for Kids

February 19, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My little one has taken to reading much quicker than I imagined.

I hoarded so many books for learning to read with the specific intention of using them with her. And then she never needed a single one. Go figure.

One thing that has been a little difficult for her to grasp, though, is rhyming.

My oldest child, also an early reader, grasped the concept right away. This child, though, needs a little more help.

So I thought I’d make a few sets of rhyming literacy puzzles to help her practice reading rhyming pairs and matching them up!

Help your children learn to practice good dental habits with this fun healthy smile file folder game for kids!

Healthy Smile File Folder Game for Kids

February 13, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of the American Dental Association.
What was your view of going to the dentist when you were a kid? If I’m being honest, I’d have to say that I had no view of it at all. Good oral health wasn’t stressed in our family, and I never went to the dentist as a child. The first time I sat in a dentist’s chair, I was 21 years old.

Now that I’ve come to understand the value of good oral health, my husband and I make sure that all of our children visit the dentist regularly. In fact, they love going to the children’s dentist because the office is geared toward kids. They can watch movies, play in an indoor treehouse, and choose prizes after each visit.

Well, most of my kids enjoy the dentist. My youngest son is the exception.

Playing the Healthy Smile File Folder Game

A few months ago, he was told that he would have to get fitted for braces. And since then, he’s started to dread going to the dentist. The orthodontist told him that he’d need them by age nine, so it’s just a matter of time.

Instead of viewing braces as an ordeal that he’ll have to go through, we want him to look at them as part of developing a healthy smile. We also want him to understand that there are several good habits suggested by the American Dental Association that we need to develop in order to take care of our teeth.

So I’m sharing this printable healthy smile file folder game for kids as part of a sponsored post on behalf of the American Dental Association! It’s a fun way to review good oral health habits with your kids and it’s absolutely free! Read on to see how to get yours!

Help your children learn to practice good dental habits with this fun healthy smile file folder game for kids!

It’s true that kids need to learn to brush their teeth every day. But that is just part of maintaining a healthy smile. According to the American Dental Association, good oral health also requires setting limits on sugary drinks, using fluoride regularly, and – if necessary – receiving orthodontic treatment, such as braces.

If kids need braces, they need to take additional care of their oral health by avoiding sugary, sticky foods and visiting the orthodontist regularly. So this healthy smile file folder game is designed to show kids the value of all of these habits when it comes to taking care of our teeth.

Playing the Healthy Smile Board Game

To play this game, you’ll need the following:

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Empty file folder
  • Laminator
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Hole punch
  • Brass paper fastener

Healthy Smile File Folder Game

This game is designed for two players, so there are two game pieces.

Each side of the game includes boxes that help kids either move forward or backward, depending on whether they’re practicing good oral health habits or not.

Playing Healthy Smile File Folder Game

Kids can use the game spinner to find out how many spaces they can move ahead in the game.

When they land on a box that features instructions, they can simply follow what’s written.

Constructing Contractions! Basic English Contractions Flashcards

February 6, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Free Contraction Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

Remember when you first learned how to form contractions?

I remember learning that in about first grade and thinking “It’s so cool that you can stick two words together and make a shorter word.”

I started looking at contractions as their own special code language, because you had to know what the original two words were to understand what the contraction meant.

It’s easy to see why I ended up becoming an English major, right?

Time has passed, but it’s still important to teach students how to “build” basic English contractions. Which is why I thought a construction theme would be perfect for these printable contractions flashcards!

Fun Construction Themed Contraction Flashcards

My boys are deep into a construction phase right now.

Our youngest son, in particular, is obsessed with earth movers, bulldozers, cranes, dump trucks, and just about anything related to building.

He told me last week that he intends to be a firefighter, a builder, and a policeman.

I told him that was good, because he could build a house. Then if the house caught on fire, he could put it out and take the person who caused the fire to jail.

To this he replied, “And then I’d build it all over again!”

So, I made these flashcards to help him learn about language arts in a fun way.

Read on to get your set!

And for more language arts fun, check out Construction Contractions – our complete English contractions ELA lesson!

That way, you can go over how to build the contraction and then quiz the kids on which contraction each pair of words forms.

These would be an excellent ELA review for early elementary students!

As you go over each contraction’s root words, show students how the final contraction is altered (missing letters are replaced with an apostrophe).

Then let students flip through the blank word flashcards and try to remember which contraction is formed by the root words on the construction sign!

Teach kids about the royal history of Africa with this African Kingdoms printable African history unit study!

African Kingdoms! A Printable African History Unit Study for Kids

January 25, 2018 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

As we started studying history in our homeschool, I was disheartened to see how little information was available about Africa for elementary-aged children.

One of the programs we tried did not mention African kingdoms at all until fourth grade. Which meant that the first mention my children would get of African people at all would be in relation to slavery.

That was unacceptable to me.

So we set out on a multi-day African history unit study to discover some of the royal empires of Africa that existed long before the United States and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade ever existed.

African Kingdoms African History Unit

And, along the way, we learned so much that I wanted to share it with others.

Which is how this African Kingdoms printable unit study was born!

This unit, which is geared toward elementary students, is a great way to get to know some of the kingdoms and legendary rulers that reigned in Africa!

Winter is not my favorite season, but I absolutely love the beauty of snowflakes. Since we don’t see snow often in the South, a snowfall is still a big event down here.

In fact, we got a steady snowfall for a day last month and the kids just sat in the front of the living room window watching. It was basically our Super Bowl. 🙂

One of the most incredible things about snowflakes is that, as far as scientists can tell, no two snowflakes are alike! So it’s really difficult to find two similar snowflakes in nature.

But these snowflake preschool matching worksheets let kids find pairs of similar snowflakes in no time!

Make the most of autumn learning for your little one with these fall preschool worksheets!

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

October 5, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Fall is such a wonderful time to be a preschooler. I vividly remember my “nursery school” (we didn’t have preschool back then) and going there in the fall was so fun. We read fun books, we ate fall snacks (apples, of course), and the air was crisp and I just loved it.

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

A quick note here: There’s a lot of backlash against using worksheets in preschool these days. And I can understand why that’s the case. Giving four-year-olds paperwork to fill out all day doesn’t sound like much of a childhood.

In our family, we don’t use worksheets to that extent. We use them as a minimal part of our learning day. And my four-year-old loves them! She also loves to play fun learning games, read great preschool stories, and make fun preschool crafts. We try to keep it diverse. 🙂
