How to Cover Flashcards Without a Laminator

September 3, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Duck Brand Easy Liner. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have been teaching for many years – both at home and in the classroom.

Naturally, I am a flashcard fanatic. I use them and use them and use them again. I’ve even created plenty of my own.

As any educator knows, when little hands touch resources, those resources don’t last long if they’re not covered and prepared in advance.

So I tend to laminate my flashcards before handing them out.

But is there an easier way to preserve materials, especially if you don’t have access to a laminator?

Turns out there is! And you don’t need any equipment or even electricity to use it!

Keep reading to see how to use this easy method for preparing resources to use with students or in centers.

I Don’t Have a Laminator. Now What?

Have you ever been in the middle of preparing a center activity for the next day and found out you couldn’t use the laminator?

Maybe the school’s laminator isn’t working. Or the line to use it reaches out into the hallway.

Maybe you just couldn’t get away from the class to get it done that day.

Or maybe you’re a homeschooler and your own trusty laminator has finally died.

So what do you do?

You get a roll of EasyLiner® Removable Adhesive Shelf Liner and you keep right on working.

EasyLiner® is simple, easy to use Duck® Brand Clear Laminate and you can use it for all kinds of projects – from crafting to teaching.

Can You Use EasyLiner® Paper to Cover Printable Flashcards?

Yes! EasyLiner® can be used to cover paper products of all types, including printable flashcards.

It lies flat, stays clear, and doesn’t separate when you cut it with scissors.

Even better, you can wipe it clean!

Which is especially important when you’re working with early grades.

When you’re finished with a center activity and you’re ready to put it away, you can simply wipe it down with your nontoxic cleaner of choice.

Done!

How to Use EasyLiner® Paper to Cover Flashcards

Feeling nervous about using EasyLiner® clear laminate?

Don’t be. It’s truly simple.

Start by measuring the size of laminate paper you’ll need.

The back of each roll is marked with inch lines and measured in feet. so it’s simple to get the right measurements for your resource.

Cut two pieces – one for the front of the printable and one for the back.

Slowly unroll the backing paper from one corner of the laminate and lay it flat on a work surface.

Personally, I found it best to leave the printable as an entire page during this process, rather than cutting it into pieces first.

Center the page directly over the clear laminate and slowly lay it onto the sticky side (which should be facing up).

Unroll the first few inches of second piece of laminate starting from the long edge.

I like to leave the backing paper on and gradually unroll it out over the printable.

It’s easier to line up that way.

Now that you have the front and back covered, all that’s left is to cut the flashcards out.

And you’re finished!

Apple Count! Apple Number Puzzles

August 21, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

These fun apple counting puzzles are great for helping early learners relate numerals to objects!

Preschoolers absolutely love playing with puzzles.

My four-year-old asks to do a puzzle almost every single day. The same one. Over and over again.

But that’s a good thing!

It means that kids are remembering how the pieces fit together to make a complete picture and solving them more quickly each time.

Since we’ve been working on recognizing one-to-one correspondence and counting individual items, I thought we’d turn that skill into a hands-on activity with these Apple Preschool Counting Puzzles!

Fun Apple Counting to Ten Puzzles for Kids

I was hoping that my little one would like this activity and she loved it!

Read on to see how to share this hands-on counting lesson with your students!

Also – if you’re looking to build an apple unit for preschoolers, don’t miss our other apple fun, including our Apple Matching Worksheets and our Apple Coffee Filter Craft!

Apple Preschool Counting Puzzles

To use these apple preschool counting puzzles, you’ll need the following supplies: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Laminator (helpful for keeping the puzzle pieces intact for use later)
  • Scissors
  • Astrobright paper (optional)
Apple Number Puzzles

These apple counting puzzles include numbers and individual dots from 1 to 10.

Once you laminate them and cut them out, you should have ten “dot” halves and ten numeral halves.

Apple Preschool Counting Puzzles

By the way, if you’re short on color ink, a black and white line art version is included.

That way, you can let the kids color in the puzzles themselves.

Or, if you’re like me, you can use colorful AstroBright paper instead!

Printable Apple Counting Puzzles for Kids

The tricky thing about these puzzles is that they all fit together.

So the challenge for kids is to make sure that they’re matching halves based on corresponding the numerals to the number of dots on the halves.

Apple Counting Puzzles for Kids

With our little one, we focused on identifying the numeral first.

Then we counted the dots on the puzzle halves until we found the one that matches each number.

Apple Counting to Ten Puzzles

When we finished, she asked “Can I do it again, Mama?”

The surefire sign of a successful preschool lesson.

Nothing says “fall is coming” like apples.

Apple Alike! Apple Same or Different Worksheets

July 27, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Smell that?

It’s the scent of apple season around the corner!

As much as I love summer (and I do), fall is easily my next favorite season. And one of the reasons I love fall so much has to do with apples.

I’ll be honest here. I have never been apple picking. But it’s definitely on my bucket list to try with the kids.

I have, however, used apples as an early childhood theme for years (like almost all primary teachers).

And I’m excited to share a brand new apple-themed early resource: Apple Alike! Apple Same or Different Worksheets!

Fun Apple Same and Different Worksheets

This is a wonderful and simple way to practice visual discrimination with early learners during fall!

Teach early students how to recognize animals with different sleeping habits with this hands-on diurnal and nocturnal animals sorting activity!

Day and Night! Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity

July 13, 2020 by Selena Robinson 3 Comments

Teach kids about the animals who are active during the day and those that come out at night with this fun nocturnal and diurnal animals sorting activity!
Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity - Look! We're Learning!
Use the print or digital version of this nocturnal and diurnal animals sorting activity to teach students about animal sleep habits!

Have you ever seen a possum in real life?

Growing up in the country, I knew that they existed. But it took several years before I actually saw one scurrying away in the early morning hours.

It was like catching sight of Bigfoot.

I knew that there were animals that were awake when I was asleep at night, but to actually see one was memorable.

If you’re teaching students about animal sleep habits, this printable and digital Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity can help!

Diurnal and Nocturnal Animals Sorting Activity for Early Grades

Most kids love to learn about animals and my students are no exception.

So when we were starting to learn about animal sleeping habits, I wanted to find a way to make a simple, hands-on activity they’d love to do.

Diurnal Animal Sorting Practice

Read on to see how to get your copy of this Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals activity – available as a print or digital resource!

Looking for more science resources for early grades? Take a look at our list of fun Weather STEM Experiments to try with students!

Teach early students how to recognize animals with different sleeping habits with this hands-on diurnal and nocturnal animals sorting activity!

Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting Activity for Kids

I remember learning about nocturnal animals when I was a kid, but we didn’t talk much about diurnal animals (at least not using the term “diurnal”).

So in case this term is fairly new to you as an educator, “diurnal” simply means that they are active during the day like you and me!

Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals for Early Grades

The printable nocturnal animal sorting activity is super easy to use. You’ll only need the following supplies: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer Paper
  • Scissors
  • Laminator (if you want to make a set that lasts)
  • Hook and loop adhesive coins (optional)
Nocturnal Animals Early Elementary Activity

This resource includes picture cards of 16 animals: eight are nocturnal and eight are diurnal – in both English and Spanish.

Some of the animals in the product include:

  • Hawk
  • Gorilla
  • Bee
  • Raccoon
  • Elephant
  • Possum
  • Butterfly
  • Dog
  • And 8 more!
Learning about Nocturnal Animals in Spanish

There are also sorting pages (in both English and Spanish) where students can classify animals according to whether they are diurnal or nocturnal.

The Spanish set includes a pronunciation guide.

How to Teach Early Grades about Nocturnal Animals

A set of unlabeled picture cards is also inside!

Diurnal and Nocturnal Animal Classification

Plus, there’s an answer key included, as well as a full set of instructions.

How to Use the Diurnal and Nocturnal Animals Sorting Activity with Students

When you’re ready to use this resource with your class, here are a few ways you can include it in your lesson plan.

(Look at the included teaching script if you need an idea of how to introduce this topic.)

Teaching Early Students about Nocturnal Animals

You can use this for a one-time learning Nocturnal and Diurnal Animals Sorting activity.

Just skip the laminating and have students cut and paste the animals in the correct column.

Sorting Diurnal and Nocturnal Animals in Spanish

If you have Spanish-speaking students, let them use the animal cards and the sorting sheet with Spanish terms.

This is also great for early Spanish immersion classes.

Classifying Animals by Sleeping Habits

If you have students who are practicing writing, use the unlabeled cards as a labeling activity!

Just laminate the cards and then allow students to write the animal names (in either language) with wet erase markers.

Or have the class help you label the cards by challenging them to spell each animal name out loud with you.

Diurnal and Nocturnal Animals for Early Grades

Use the unlabeled cards as a reference and let students name each animal on their own. They can then use the labeled cards for self-checking.

Diurnal Animals Early Science Center Activity

If you use it at science centers, add hook and loop coin stickers to the back of the cards. Cut each column apart and place them on rings.

Then add coin stickers onto the column squares so students can practice sorting the animals again and again.

Big City Lights! Printable Number Playdough Mats

June 29, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Growing up in the country, I always wanted to visit a big city. I’d seen them on TV and movies, but I’d never actually been to one.

Until my first trip to New York City.

We visited there as a family when I was six years old and it was everything I’d been hoping to see – and more.

Of course, in the daylight the city looked much different.

But the memory of those bright lights stayed with me. And that’s where I got the idea for these Big City Lights! Printable Number Playdough Mats.

Printable Shark Counting to Ten Puzzles for Kids

June 11, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Does anyone else have a child who is absolutely fascinated by sharks?

Our oldest son is obsessed with them.

We’ve seen so many documentaries about sharks, read so many books about sharks, and bought so many shark “tooth” necklaces for him over the years that I’ve lost count.

He wants us to let him watch Jaws, but that’s not happening any time soon.

While I don’t share the level of enthusiasm for sharks that he has, I do think they’re absolutely incredible. And lots of kids love them.

Which is why I wanted to share these printable counting to ten puzzles that have a fun shark theme!

Shark Themed Counting Puzzles

This product includes two different sets of counting puzzles. Each puzzle consists of two pieces.

One side shows a set of shark fins in the water. The other shows the matching numeral for the number of fins.

Using Counting to Ten Puzzles

To use the first set of counting to ten puzzles, simply cut each two-piece puzzle apart.

Then let students practice matching the pieces up.

As a note, I’ve found that it’s best to print these on cardstock.

They’ll hold up much better to reuse on cardstock than on regular printer paper.

To use the write and wipe puzzles more than once, be sure to laminate the puzzle pieces first.

After students use dry or wet erase markers to fill them in, simply wipe them off and they’re ready to use another time.
