Fun and Educational Printable Road Trip Games for Kids

As a kid, I took a ton of road trips with my family. And, while I enjoyed them, I typically spent most of the travel time huddled in the backseat with my Walkman (remember those?) and a stack of books.

That’s not necessarily bad. But it’s much better to spend that time making learning fun for kids, especially if you have more than one child. Educational printable road trip games for kids are a wonderful way to pass the time on a vacation and reinforce some important learning concepts.

Take a look at the list we’ve rounded up below. There are over 25 to choose from! Print a few before you leave and let the kids have fun (and learn) as you ride! Plus, see how you can check your vehicle to make sure your car seats are safe before you hit the road!

Planning for a Safe Road Trip with Kids

Since we have four kids, we’ve had a car seat in our vehicle for the last 12 years. We’ve gone through our share in that time (at least four) and we’ve had to choose vehicles based on whether they were suitable for traveling as a family.

What I didn’t know was that I could have been using Cars.com to find the perfect family-friendly vehicle for us! Before making a recommendation, Cars.com does its own car seat checks. (This is a great step-by-step tutorial in how to conduct a car seat safety check, by the way.)

Sharks! – A Shark Food Chain Game

My kids, like most kids, just love sharks.

They are totally fascinated with how powerful they are, how quickly they swim, and how they eat pretty much everything.

In fact, I think that last one might be the thing they like most about them.

So I was ecstatic to get a copy of the gorgeous picture book “How to Survive As a Shark” from Innovation Press! As we read the book, we learned so many things about sharks that we didn’t know before, including how they sleep and what they eat!

And that gave me the idea to turn the shark’s diet into a fun file folder game!

How to Survive As a Shark: Shark Food Chain Game

Most people (me included) think that sharks are at the top of the ocean food chain.

But they’re not! There’s an animal that eats sharks!

That was just one of the cool facts we learned from the gorgeous picture book “How to Survive As a Shark” by Kristen Foote and Erica Salcedo.

In this story, a young shark gets taken under the “fin” of an older shark who’s survived some tough ocean battles over the years. He lost his eye in one and wears a wicked cool eye patch as a result.

Through the book, kids learn how sharks are born, what they eat as they grow, and what eats them! (I won’t tell! You have to read the book!)

After sharing the story together, we decided to make a simple shark food chain game to help my kids remember what sharks eat.

To use this shark file folder game at home, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Full assembly instructions are included in the product.

Basically, you print the game and glue it inside the file folder. Page one should appear on the left side and page two should appear on the right.

Cut out the game spinner (with arrow) and the two game pieces.

If you want the spinner to really work well, print it on cardstock or you can glue it onto cardstock after printing.

Use the brass fastener to attach the arrow to the spinner and you’re ready to roll!

With this game, players take the journey of a young shark from infancy to adulthood. Seaweed is one of the shark’s first foods.

As they grow, they consume larger and larger prey. As adults, sharks may eat squid and even dolphins!

This game is designed for two players. Kids can use the included game pieces to travel the board.

The game spinner lets them move from one to four spaces.

As they land on spaces with directions, they get to move forward or back.

The first one to the end wins!

This is such a neat way to learn what sharks eat and it helps to reinforce what they learn in the book in a fun, hands-on way!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Alphabet and Number Fall Playdough Mats

We’ve been enjoying releasing all of our newest fall-themed products lately! Today we’re wrapping things up with a set of Alphabet & Number Fall Playdough Mats!

If you’re teaching toddlers or preschoolers this year, you’ll love using these mats to help them work on fine motor skills and letter/number recognition!

Plus, it’s always fun to play with playdough, even for adults!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Alphabet & Number Fall Playdough Mats

To use these preschool fall playdough mats, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

This pack includes:

26 letter mats showing both uppercase and lowercase letters
10 number mats showing the numbers 0-9

To use these mats, show the kids how to roll their playdough into rope-like shapes.

Once they form the playdough ropes, they can connect them together to trace the shapes of the letters and numbers on the mats.

We decided to use fall-themed colored playdough as well.

There are mats for each letter – from A all the way to Z! So if you’re using letter of the week with your preschoolers, you can choose one letter per week and work on practicing forming the letters as you go.

Plus, there are printable fall playdough mats for the numbers 0-9 as well!

Be sure to laminate them before you use them with any playdough, especially if you want to reuse them at another time.

Super Cute Printable Farm Paper Bag Puppets

When my kids were small, they all loved the petting zoo.

Between watching the chickens run around, petting the goats and baby lambs, and seeing the pigs root in the mud, there was so much for the kids to see!

Our youngest child still loves the petting zoo and she’s not alone!

Kids just love farm animals, which is why farms are such a popular topic for early childhood education units.

This year, our youngest child is working on reading more picture books and we started with the book Big Red Barn.

To help her with learning to recite stories, I made up some printable farm paper bag puppets so she could reenact parts of the story.

And I’m sharing them with all of you today!

How to Assemble the Printable Farm Paper Bag Puppets

To make these farm paper bag puppets, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Printer paper
Brown paper lunch bags (One per puppet)
Crayons
Child-safe scissors
Liquid glue
A copy of our free Farm Paper Bag Puppet printables (Details below)
Pick up a copy of Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown to make this a storytime activity!

First, you’ll need to print the paper bag puppet faces out.

Give the kids some crayons and let them color them in!

We did traditional farm animal colors, but let the kids use whatever colors they want! If they want to make a purple cow, so be it.

After you color in the puppet faces, use a pair of child-safe scissors to cut them out as one piece each.

Flip a paper bag upside down so that the bottom is at the top. Leave it folded.

Then spread liquid glue over the folded bottom. That’s where you’ll paste the puppet face.

Stick the puppet face on the bag bottom and hold it down to glue it securely.

Cut another piece of printer paper in half and color it to match the puppet face.

Then glue it onto the paper bag body directly under the puppet face. Be sure to flip the bottom up so that you can fit the paper onto the bag.

When you’re done, the puppet should look like this.

How to Use the Farm Paper Bag Puppets for Storytelling

Repeat the process with the other puppet printables to make a cow puppet, a chicken puppet, and a pig puppet.

Since we were reading Big Red Barn, we wanted to make one of each.

But you could also print three pig puppets to go along with The Three Little Pigs or print several cow puppets to go with Click, Clack, Moo.

There are plenty of great children’s books about farms to use these with!

To make your puppets “talk”, just have the kids put their hands inside the bags and place their fingers into the folded bag bottom (the same place where the face is).

They can move their fingers up and down to make each puppet speak!

Using lunch bags is the easiest way to make sure that the bags will fit your little ones’ hands.

But if you want to make adult puppets, you might want to get bags that are a little bit bigger.

“Oh, Mr. Pig, you’re so funny!”

These were so much fun for storytelling! And they’re great for pretend play too!

When my kids were very young, I always used plastic-covered scissors with them.

They were very helpful, because I could give them a printable cutting practice worksheet without worrying about them cutting their fingers.

As they got older, we graduated to metal scissors with blunted edges.

It made them feel they were using “real” scissors like Mom, but without the danger of sticking themselves (or a sibling who got too close).

I just love practicing handwriting. When I was a kid, I would spend a lot of my free time doodling, writing, and trying to make my handwriting as gorgeous as possible. (Do kids still do that in these text-heavy days?)

It’s true that penmanship isn’t as popular as it used to be, but it’s still a great skill for kids to learn. And that’s why I’m sharing these free alphabet animal notebooking pages!

These are a perfect complement to our Alphabet Animal Flashcards! You can use them for letter recognition, tracing practice, and handwriting! Read on to see how to get your set for free!

You might want to focus on one animal notebooking page per day. So on Day 1, you could complete the A is for alligator page.

Have your child trace the uppercase and lowercase letter “A” at the top. Then they can trace the phrase “A is for alligator”.

On the lines below, have your child practice rewriting “A is for alligator” up to seven times. They can even color in the line art alligator at the bottom!

Printable Counting to 100 Flashcards

Remember the Count on Sesame Street? I can’t exactly recall when I learned to count, but I like to think that he played a large role in my mastering that skill. I still say “One, ha, ha, ha!” on occasion.

What I learned from the Count is that learning to count should be fun. When kids have fun learning, they pick up on concepts so much faster!

Which is why I wanted to make some printable counting to 100 flashcards to help Piglet learn to master counting from 1 to 100. And I’m sharing them with my readers today!

These are so fun for reviewing number skills with kids! Plus, they have a fun toy friends theme!

Toy Friends Counting to 100 Flashcards

To use these toy themed counting to 100 flashcards, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are listed below. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

This set contains flashcards for each number from 1 to 100. 25 pages of four flashcards each!

For Piglet, we focused on learning the numbers in sequence. So I gave her the cards and let her practice putting them in sequence by tens.

First, we focused on listing the numbers from 1 to 10.

After she got the hang of putting those numbers in order, we started working with other number groups.

Finishing with the numbers from 90 to 100!

We made it all the way to 100!

You could also use these flashcards to have kids match up even and odd numbers. Or they’d be great for an “I Have, Who Has?” game!

For reviewing, just hole punch them and put them on an O ring. See if the kids can remember which number comes next!

My four-year-old is super excited about going to the park now that the skies are turning blue and the air is getting warmer.

Yes, I know we can go to the park during winter, but I’m from Florida, so no.

Spring is just around the corner! And down here, spring usually means lots and lots of bugs. Some are downright frightening to me (palmetto bugs), but some like caterpillars, snails, and butterflies are just adorable.

I thought these cute Birds and Bugs Spring Playdough Mats would be a fun spring-themed addition to our growing collection of Preschool Playdough Mats!

These are a super way to work on fine motor skills, counting, and letters with toddlers and preschoolers!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Birds and Bugs Spring Playdough Mats

Laminator (for keeping the mats sturdy)

These preschool playdough mats are a wonderful spring activity for toddlers and preschoolers!

There are 36 mats in all – one for each letter of the alphabet (featuring uppercase and lowercase) and one for each number 0-9.

Kids can roll playdough into long ropes and then use it to trace the outline of each letter and number.

This is great fine motor skills practice and an excellent way to help them learn to recognize uppercase and lowercase letters and their numbers!

Basketball Free Skip Counting Flashcards

We are huge basketball fans. My husband played basketball in high school and all of us love to watch games whenever we get a chance.

So – for my kids who are sports lovers, but aren’t necessarily math lovers, I thought I’d make a new set of free printable flashcards – basketball free skip counting flashcards! These are a fun resource to get active kids into memorizing skip counting by 2, 5, and 10!

Basketball Free Skip Counting Flashcards

To use these flashcards, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For more, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Printer paper
Scissors
Laminator (for making the cards sturdy)

In this pack, there are flashcards for counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s – up to 40. And you can use them in many ways!

Play skip counting concentration: You could play a concentration game where kids have to flip over the cards that follow one another in sequence for counting by a certain number. For example, if a child turns over the 2 card, he or she would need to turn over the 4 card to have a matching pair. Then continue in order: 6, 8, and so on.

Use them for memorizing skip counting: Laminate all the cards and punch a hole in the top left corner of each. Put them on a key ring and have the kids spend a few minutes each day memorizing skip counting sequences. Be sure to put the cards on the ring in order!

Work on fast recall skills: Or you could use them as traditional flashcards. Put the cards in sequence. Then hold up one card and ask the kids what number comes next. For example, hold up a 10 and ask what child what card comes next. The child who calls it out correctly first gets to keep the next card. Whoever has the most at the end is the winner!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Rainbow Playdough Mats

Seasonal allergies aside, I absolutely adore spring. Next to fall, it’s my favorite season. Well, summer might be in the running also, which tells you how I feel about winter.

We don’t see rainbows that often in our area, but when we do, they are gorgeous. If I happen to see one while driving, I’ve been known to shout “Look, kids! A rainbow!”

They’re just as fascinating to me now as they were when I was a kid.

For our newest preschool playdough mats, I wanted to share one with a fun spring theme. And that’s why today we have our Over the Rainbow Playdough Mats!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Rainbow Playdough Mats

You can use these without laminating them, but you probably won’t be able to reuse them a second time if you do.

If you’re waffling on buying a laminator, they’re totally worth it.

This product includes one color rainbow mat and one black and white mat, so it’s a great way to talk about colors with preschoolers as well!

Since these rainbow mats use several colors, kids can break out many colors of playdough to use together. That’s always fun.

Rainbow Preschool Playdough Mat for Kids

Work on one color row at a time and make sure that kids can recognize and name each one before moving on.

This is also a good fine motor activity, because preschoolers can use their hands to form the playdough into ropes and then mold them to fit the mat pattern.

Once kids follow the color playdough mat pattern, they can recreate it on the black and white mat.

Or just come up with their own color scheme instead!

Winter is a great time to get kids excited about learning! Especially when the weather is so awful no one wants to venture outside. 🙂

If you have older kids (like I do), it can be tough to keep your younger ones involved in your homeschooling lessons. Our preschooler always wants to be at the table with her older siblings during class, no matter what we’re learning about. I could be teaching organic chemistry and she’d want to be involved.

We’ve been working on basic Spanish with our kids for some time, but I realized recently that I’ve never shared a set of flashcards that focus on learning the Spanish alphabet. Whoops!

These Spanish alphabet flashcards are a perfect resource to help your children learn to memorize all 29 letters of the Spanish alphabet. (Yes, there are 29 letters.)

Preschool Playdough Mats: Apple Tree Counting Mat

Piglet, our youngest, is starting PreK this year. She is so excited about it.

Of course, she also thinks that she will begin kindergarten immediately after the first day of preschool.

Since she’s working on PreK concepts, I’ll be sharing a lot more preschool resources this year, including preschool playdough mats!

Here in the U.S., we’re all gearing up for fall, so here’s a fun Playdough Apple Tree Counting Mat you can use with your toddler or preschooler too!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Apple Tree Counting Mat

Here are the supplies we used for our mats: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

That’s it! You definitely want to laminate these first so that they can be reused.

Since the apples are grouped on the trees in sets of four, this was a simple way to work on skip counting.

Just add four apples to each tree and count them.

Use a different color to work on counting and sorting. (How many green apples are there? How many red apples are there?)

Then a little reinforcement. If there are four green apples on this tree and four green apples on this tree, how many green apples are there altogether? Oh, so four plus four is how much?

Next thing you know, your preschooler will be saying that 4 x 2 = 8. 🙂

Printable Spanish Flashcards: Spanish Verb Flashcards

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a new set of printable Spanish flashcards with you all, so I decided to get things going again with a set of Spanish verb flashcards!

Using verbs in Spanish is quite different than in English.

You have to conjugate (or change) the verb each time you use it so that it matches the person who is doing the action.

So, for example, the way you would say “I talk” is different than the way you would say “She talks”. In both of those phrases, the verb for “talk” would be different.

Sound confusing? It can be, but I’m working on a resource to help with verb conjugation.

In the meantime, let’s get to know basic verbs with these printables!

Getting ready for the new school year typically involves lots of planning for the parents. But as kids get older, they can start to take more responsibility for their school schedule, whether they’re in public school or homeschool.

My boys are nuts about superheroes right now, so I just knew they’d love these Superhero Free Student Planner Pages! Read on to get them for your little superheroes too!

Superhero Free Student Planner Pages

To use these free student planner pages, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

This pack includes free student planner pages for each weekday (Monday through Friday).

Since they’re unlabeled, you can use them to schedule subjects or assignments or chores or whatever else you’d like for your kids!

The pages have spaces for items from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which is typically the timeframe that students need to schedule.

And each page features a different superhero, including Superman, Batman, and Spiderman!

We structure our day like this for early elementary learners. But you can schedule yours however you see fit! Since each line is fairly long, you could even place more than one item on each line.

And, if you want to encourage your children to work independently, print a set for them to use and create their own schedule!

Homeschool planning season is here!

Planning season is the bestest season of all. It’s time to think about the new school year, the grades our kids are going into (6th, 3rd, 2nd, and PreK here), and all the awesome lesson plans we’ll write down and never complete…lol.

This year, our oldest is going into middle grades, so I figured it was time to give her a bit more responsibility for her education. So I made up these Strawberry Friends Printable Student Planner Free Pages! Read on to get a set for your kids absolutely free!

Strawberry Friends Printable Student Planner Free Pages

I had Tigger in mind when I made these. She loves Strawberry Shortcake and her friends, so I just knew she’d like these Strawberry Friends planner printables.

She took one look and fell in love with them. Let’s hope she falls in love with actually sticking to her weekly schedule. 🙂

This planner includes one page for each day of the week and there are scheduled time blocks from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. How you use these is up to you!

You might have your child write down a subject for each time block or use them to schedule out chores, activities, or field trips. The choice is yours!

We structure our days pretty loosely for early elementary grades, but for middle school, this list will be a bit more comprehensive. Since we alternate subjects, Tuesday’s schedule doesn’t resemble Wednesday’s or Thursday’s. Which is why it’s all the more important to keep up with the daily lesson plan!

Spanish Community Helpers Printables

We love learning Spanish in our homeschool! And we’ve been sharing printable Spanish flashcards on the blog over the past several months.

This time, though, I wanted to share something a bit more extensive. Which is how we came up with these Spanish community helpers printables!

These are an excellent addition to a community helpers unit for preschool or early elementary grades.

Or if you’re working on learning basic Spanish vocabulary with older kids, let them work with the pronunciation guide and flashcards for memorization!

Spanish Community Helpers Printables Pack

To use this set of Spanish community helpers printables, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are listed below. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Pencils
Scissors
Laminator (if you want to laminate the Spanish community helper flashcards)

This printable pack features Spanish and English words and images for eight different community helpers:

Doctor
Veterinarian
Dentist
Firefighter
Crossing Guard
Farmer
Police Officer
and Chef!

There are printable flashcards for each community helper in English and Spanish, as well as full-size pages with the English and Spanish words and traceable phrases for practice.

One note: Some of the phrases are gender-specific. For example, the image of the firefighter is a woman, so the phrase is “la bombera”.

If the firefighter is a man, though, the phrase would be “el bombero“. The same is true with the phrase for doctor: a female doctor would be “la médica“, while a male doctor would be “el médico“.

A full pronunciation guide is also provided!

Using the flashcards is a great way to help kids memorize these words in both languages!

Kids can take turns matching the English to Spanish community helper words using the corresponding flashcards. Plus, there are cards that have no pictures at all – to help them learn to recognize the vocabulary words.
