When I was a kid, one of my strongest summer memories is going down to the Dairy Queen to get an OREO Blizzard.

It was my very favorite childhood treat.

(In fact, it’s taking every bit of willpower in my body not to break off from writing this post and go get one.)

Ice cream is still a classic treat for kids, especially during the summer.

And that’s why I wanted to make a fun ice cream-themed learning activity for early grades – this ice cream kindergarten shape sorting activity!

Fun Ice Cream Plane Shape Sorting Activity

This is such a fun (and low-prep) learning activity for little learners!

You only need a few minutes to prepare it and then the kids will be off and running!

Just be prepared for them to ask you for ice cream immediately afterward.

A full blackline version is included as well.

Ice Cream Shape Matching Activity for Kindergarten

And there are shape labels and shape word labels for matching. An answer key is also inside.

How to Use the Ice Cream Shape Sorting Activity

You may want to begin this lesson with an introduction to plane shapes.

Start by reviewing the four basic shapes (circle, square, triangle, and rectangle) with your class. Build from there, gradually introducing the remaining eight plane shapes.

Shape Matching Activity for Kindergarten

Talk about each shape’s name as you go along. This will help prepare your students for the matching activity.

Printable Kindergarten Shape Sorting Lesson

If you’re working with early learners who are still practicing basic shapes, stick with the shape templates that are already labeled.

But if your students are already reading, add a little challenge with the labeling printables.

They can practice finding the correct shape name for each “cone” or finding the correct shape for each shape name “scoop”.

So instead of just giving them a sheet of problems to solve, I put together a fun aquarium-themed lesson: our Aquarium Arithmetic Seek and Find activity!

Printable Relaxed Kids Homeschool Day Planner

March 23, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We were homeschoolers for ten years.

During that time, I taught up to four children. In four different grade levels. It was fun.

And at times overwhelming.

But one of the most important things I learned is that the only way to make homeschooling work (for me, at least) was to take a very relaxed approach.

I tried timed schedules and they just didn’t work for us. Especially because some of our children have attention issues.

The relaxed homeschooling approach, though, was perfect.

Which is why I thought it might be helpful to share this printable kids homeschool day planner – which is perfect for relaxed learning at home!

Cute Printable Homeschool Day Planner for Kids

With this handy planning page, you can structure your child’s learning day without going overboard.

Which will only stress you all out. Trust me.

Read on to get your copy – free!

And, for more ways to plan your homeschool without feeling overwhelmed, take a look at how I got by without using a homeschool planner at all!

This free printable homeschool day planner makes it easy to structure a day of learning from home!

What is Relaxed Homeschooling?

I feel like I need to give a quick primer about relaxed homeschooling, just in case you’re new to teaching kids at home.

Relaxed homeschooling takes a gentle approach to schoolwork.

Instead of structuring your day in a school-at-home fashion (with a set time for each subject and a set amount of work to cover), you choose your own way to cover each subject.

In fact, you can even choose which subjects to complete each day.

The overall goal is to learn on a continuous basis – not to cover a certain amount of the curriculum.

My kids loved it.

Printable Relaxed Kids Homeschool Day Planner

So – if you’re using a relaxed homeschool approach, this simple homeschool day planner is perfect for outlining what you want to accomplish each day.

To use this printable kids homeschool planner, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer Paper
  • Pencils
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Dry erase markers (optional)

This homeschool planner includes two color pages and two line art pages.

One set of color and line art planning pages has labeled sections for the following subjects:

  • Math
  • English
  • Physical Activity
  • Creative
  • Free Choice
  • Science
  • and Quiet Time
Colorful Homeschool Day Planner Printable for Kids

The other set of color and line art planning pages is unlabeled, so you can decide which subjects or areas you’d like to teach that day.

The very essence of relaxed homeschooling!

You can even make these reusable.

Simply laminate the pages and use dry erase markers to fill in what you’d like to cover each day.

Big and Small Flowers! Flower Size Sorting Printables

Spring Worksheets for Kids - Flowers Big and Small Sorting Worksheets
Work on learning big and small sizes with these flower size sorting printables!
These free big and small sorting worksheets are a perfect spring activity for preschoolers who are learning about size!

One of Piglet’s favorite subjects to discuss is how “big” she’s getting.

On any given morning, she may emerge from her bedroom shouting “I’m getting so big!” or “I’m almost as big as you now, Mama!”

Preschoolers are often fixated on getting “big”, which is a surefire way to know that they’re starting to notice the differences between big and small.

And that’s a great thing, because size differentiation is a basic math concept that helps kids grasp other ideas: comparing shapes, comparing numbers, measurement, and more!

Fun Flower Size Sorting Activity for Early Grades

So, I thought that Piglet could use a new set of spring worksheets for kids – these flower-themed size sorting printables!

How to Use Early Creative Writing Prompts with Kids

As an English major, creative writing is one of my passions.

There’s just something about putting pencil to paper (or fingers to keyboards, these days) and starting off down a road of creative thought.

Preschool Spring Writing Prompts

You kind of have an idea of where you’d like to go, but you’re always surprised at the things you come up with along the way.

Writing Stories for Preschoolers

The same is true with little writers!

Open-ended questions give them a chance to put their imaginations to work. And, after all, writing without imagination is like…like…not writing at all.

Each of these spring creative writing prompts has a line for kids to finish the sentence. At the bottom, there’s a box for them to draw a picture of what they wrote.

Spring Preschool Prompts

This spring, Piglet wants to play basketball. That’s her shooting the ball into the hoop in the picture.

Writing about Spring with Preschoolers

I will say that I had to read the sentence out to her and help her spell the words. The rest she did herself.

Working on Story Predictions with Preschoolers

After each initial prompt is a second page asking kids to write what they think will happen next.

This is a simple way to introduce creative writing to preschoolers: ask them to come up with an image and then predict what might happen afterward.

Completed Preschool Story Prompts

Piglet’s answer to what will happen after she plays basketball was: “Bounces”.

Naturally, she drew a picture of the ball bouncing after falling through the net.

Working on Storywriting with Preschoolers

Hmmm….what to do next? Color the pictures!

Coloring Completed Story Prompts

And that’s what she did. She was so proud of her work that she gave her masterpieces to her older siblings.

This was a fun (and quick) language arts lesson for her.

We spent about 15 minutes on one of the prompts and she got to practice handwriting, creative writing, art, phonics, and spelling – all in one activity!

Free Mother Goose Rhyme Copywork Worksheets

February 10, 2020 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Help your children learn to memorize and write classic rhymes with this printable Mother Goose Rhyme Copywork pack!

Remember going to nursery school? (That’s preschool for those of you born after 1990.)

You basically spent the day playing, singing songs, eating snacks, and listening to stories. It was the highlight of my four-year-old existence.

My nursery school was named “Shady Oaks”, which still makes me think of sitting under a giant oak tree and reading a storybook.

At nursery school, I heard Mother Goose rhymes almost everyday. And I still love them.

They’re wonderful resources for helping preschoolers learn to memorize basic poetry, get introduced to rhyming, and more.

Printable Nursery Rhyme Copywork Pages for Kids

My four-year-old uses Starfall all the time. And guess what they do to cover poetry? They use Mother Goose rhymes too! Some things never go out-of-date.

Shape Sort! Shape Sorting Activity Mats for Kids

February 6, 2020 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Shapes are all around us. We often learn about them as individual items, but we really see them everywhere we go!

When my kids were small, they loved spotting shapes as we went about the day.

They found shapes on streetlights, traffic signs, buildings, and especially their favorite foods.

To help early learners recognize shapes all around them, I’m sharing these fun shape sorting activity mats for preschoolers!

Shape Sorting Mats for Early Learners

Each shape mat has six spaces to place the six objects that have the specified shape.

The cards are also color coded, so it’s easy – even for little ones – to match them up.

If a student is unsure which shape goes where, ask them to lay the shape card directly on the shape shown on the mat.

Then they can trace around the shape with their finger to see which shape it resembles the most.

This can be used as a one-time cut and paste activity for students, but it really works wonderfully as a reusable lesson.
