Fall is in the air!

For us down here in the Deep South, that usually means high temperatures in the mid-80s. But I’ll take that over the high 90s anyday!

While the temperatures don’t drop too much, we do sense that the air is drier and cooler, which is a huge relief after a sweltering summer.

So I thought it was a great time to share this printable fall memory game so that the kids can start getting ready for autumn…when it finally shows up here.

This is such an easy, low-prep activity! You just print the product, cut out the cards, and you’re good to go. Plus, it would make a fantastic busy bag.

Printable Fall Memory Game for Kids

To use this printable fall memory game for kids, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Printer (with ink)
Cardstock
Laminator (optional)
Scissors

This simple fall game features two pages of fall-themed picture cards with words. There are 12 different images with two cards each.

To add a little color to this game, print your cards on patterned cardstock.

The cards hold up better when printed on cardstock and the pattern makes it difficult to see through the back of the cards when they’re placed face down too.

Let the kids place these on the table and then race to see who can collect the most matches first!

5 Reasons to Go Fall Camping and a Fall Scavenger Hunt for Kids!

Lots of people think of camping as a spring or summer vacation and there’s good reason why.

You get to spend all day outside, you can explore nature when the days are long, and you can wear shorts the whole time.

But fall is also an awesome time to go camping as a family. And there are lots of reasons why!

5 Reasons to Go Fall Camping as a Family

1. The camping rates are affordable.

Camping tends to be fairly inexpensive in the first place. If you go tent camping, you’ll only have to pay for the campsite fee each night.

But rates tend to be lower during the fall and that makes it a great time of year to grab a campsite!

2. You won’t have to deal with bugs.

Insects are usually all over the place during the hot, humid weather of summer. But in the fall, bugs (especially mosquitoes) are few and far between. Since we live in the Deep South, this makes fall camping a definite win.

3. The autumn colors are glorious.

If you plan your fall camping trip right, you’ll be sleeping outdoors when the trees are at their most beautiful. In our area, we tend to see fall foliage around late October and into mid-November, right when the weather is turning crisp.

And there’s nothing like sitting around a campfire with gorgeous fall leaves all around you.

4. Campsites are less crowded.

After the new school year begins, most families take a break from vacations. Which means fewer campers! If your school year includes a fall break (like ours does), that is a perfect time to book your camping trip together.

5. Fall is a wonderful season to spend time outdoors with the kids.

There are so many fun outdoor activities you can try with your family on a fall camping trip!

Roast marshmallows around the bonfire.
Gather up colorful leaves and make a DIY leaf garland to hang inside your tent.
Get a handful of leaves and add them to a baby food jar to make an easy fall leaf snow globe.
Or try an easy fall scavenger hunt with the little ones, like the one below!

Learning how to say color words in Spanish is always a fun lesson for kids.

Colors are all around us and learning to identify them is a great way to help students use the new Spanish vocabulary words they’re using.

Apple Tree Life Cycle Sentence Writing Activity

Learning about apple tree life cycles is such a fun fall science lesson for kids. Plus, if you’re able to actually go apple picking, you can see this process in real life!

Studying the life cycle of an apple tree is also an excellent activity for learning sequences with early learners.

Since the growth process follows a set of fixed steps, it’s a good way to talk about what happens first, second, third, and so on.

Printable Apple Tree 1-10 Counting Mats

Learning to count and make ten can be a tricky concept for preschoolers.

It’s one thing to recite the numbers in order from one to ten, but it’s another to understand that you can add two numbers together to equal ten.

Especially since there are so many ways to make ten!

So I thought these fun apple tree 1-10 counting mats would be a fun way to bring this concept to life for preschoolers!

Unlike our printable apple tree counting mat, which focuses on groups of four, these printables help children visualize the amounts that make up the numbers from one to ten.

Apple Tree 1-10 Counting Mats

To use these 1-10 counting mats, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

There are ten counting mats in all in this set: one for each number from one to ten.

There are also red and green counting pieces included. If you’re using this with a preschooler, you might find it best to cut out the apples yourself.

If you decide to let the kids do it, be sure to use child-safe scissors. Apple mini erasers would also be great for this!

Each of the counting mats shows the numeral, the number word, and a blank ten frame.

So students can use the counting pieces to fill in the ten frame and show the correct number of apples for each numeral.

I like to use these with hook and loop sticky dots to make a reusable activity.

You could even laminate the mats to make them last longer, especially if you’re using them in math centers or morning tubs.

Since the apples come in both green and red, students can combine them to show that one plus one equals two, three plus two equals five, and so on.

You can also show them how to subtract by completing the ten frame and then taking apples away one by one.

When you’re teaching preschool, shapes are a critical math skill to cover. The great thing is that learning shapes is a pretty fun activity already, so you don’t have to worry about making it fun.

How to Use Shape Sorting Worksheets with Early Learners

There are a few ways you can use these shape sorting printables with your students.

Begin by asking if anyone can identify the shape on the apple in the top left of the worksheet.

Then introduce students to the shape word on the page. You can even have the class spell it out loud.

Preschool Apple Shape Sorting Worksheets

The directions are printed on each page. Read through them with your students and check for comprehension before beginning.

You might even want to complete one with the class to give them a head start.

Apple Shape Activity Pages for Kindergarten

Walk the students through the shape choices on the apple. See if they can spot the featured shape for that page.

After they’re done, have them count how many of the shapes they found. You can also ask them to identify the other shapes in the apple.

Fall Apple Pie Playdough for Kids

My kids have loved to play with playdough for as long as I can remember.

Of course, some of that is because I like to play with playdough and I basically insisted they did too. I make no apologies.

Working with playdough is such a soothing activity for kids (and adults) and it’s good gross motor and fine motor skill practice too.

So, since fall is just around the corner, why not try this fun apple pie playdough recipe with your kids for some fall sensory fun!

This is such a fun DIY playdough recipe to make with the kids. It smells amazing and it’s a fun way to get them ready for fall baking!

It would also be a fantastic sensory activity to try after reading some of your child’s favorite fall books for kids!

Fall Apple Pie Playdough

To make this fall apple pie playdough recipe, you’ll need the following:

Flour
Coconut oil
Salt
Cream of tartar
Food coloring
Apple scented oil
Green apple scented oil
Cinnamon scented oil

You’ll be following the same basic DIY playdough recipe to make each flavor.

You’ll just need to adjust the scents and colors to make each ingredient of the “pie”.

As a note, this apple pie playdough recipe is NOT edible. Please don’t allow small children to eat it. It smells good, but it’s just for play.

Start by mixing the flour, salt, and cream of tartar together.

Then add the coconut oil, food coloring, apple scented oil, and some warm water.

Cook the mixture over low heat while stirring continuously.

You’ll know it’s done when it starts to look “doughy”. Keep stirring until the dough no longer looks wet.

Then remove it from the pan and knead it with your hand until it forms a ball.

To make the green apple playdough, swap out the red food coloring for green food coloring.

And use green apple scented oil instead of regular apple.

When you’re ready to make the “crust”, just use brown food coloring and cinnamon scented oil.

Follow the same steps to cook the playdough on the stove.

Then knead it into a ball and you’re done!

The kids will love using playdough tools to mold each batch into a pie!

They can even use child-safe scissors to cut the lattice strips for the top of the “apple pie crust”!

Apple Pie Playdough Recipe

Get the full apple pie playdough recipe below!

If you plan to make it with your kids, let me know how they like it!

Apple Pie Playdough Recipe

Ingredients

2 cups flour
3/4 cup salt
4 tsp cream of tartar
2 tbsp coconut oil
2 cups warm water
red food coloring
green food coloring
brown food coloring
apple scented oil
green apple scented oil
cinnamon scented oil

Instructions

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and cream of tartar.
Add the coconut oil and mix well.
Pour the mixture into a saucepan and add the warm water.
Add a few drops of red food coloring to make the apple playdough. Add green food coloring if you are making the green apple playdough. Add brown food coloring if you are making the cinnamon playdough.
Cook the mixture over low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture is no longer wet and looks doughy.
Remove the dough from the saucepan. Knead it with your hands until smooth.

Recipe Notes

Store the playdough in an airtight container for up to three days.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Apple Craft

It’s still warm where we are. (It’s the South. It’ll be warm through November.)

But I simply cannot wait for fall. I love fall. It’s easily my very favoritest time of year. And one of the best parts of fall is ripe, juicy apples!

So for our latest coffee filter craft project, I’m sharing a coffee filter apple craft that’s easy enough for preschoolers.

They may need a little help cutting the filter into an apple shape, but after that, they’ll be good to go on their own!

So this is a perfect craft idea for preschool, kindergarten, or even older kids who might want to add their own touches.

And it’s an excellent art activity for an apple thematic unit or following a read-aloud selection that features apples!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Apple Craft

To make this coffee filter apple craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

Flatten out the coffee filter as best you can.

Color the entire filter bright red.

Flip the coffee filter over and sketch a rough apple shape on the back with pencil.

Use scissors to cut out the apple shape. Then flip the filter back over and glue it in the center of the construction paper.

Draw a stem and leaf at the top using colored pencils.

Add some fun polka dots and you’re done!

If you cut the filters into apple shapes ahead of time, this would be a fantastic craft for playdates or kids’ parties!

Just hand them the filters, construction paper, art supplies, and glue and see what the kids come up with!

Ways to Make A Coffee Filter Apple Craft

You don’t have to stick with a typical red apple when you’re making a coffee filter apple craft. Try these fun variations too!

Make a Golden Delicious apple with a friendly worm by using a bright yellow crayon to color the coffee filter and sticking a construction paper “worm” in the top.
