Sign, Spell, & Match! Sign Language Alphabet Puzzles

July 15, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I’ve always loved teaching our children American Sign Language.

We use ASL in our local congregation, but I also like using it to build early literacy skills in our kids.

In fact, when we practice spelling words, the kids generally fingerspell each word as they say the letter.

I’m convinced that learning to sign has made them better spellers overall.

Since ASL is such a wonderful tool for early spelling skills, I thought it would be awesome to combine it with letter recognition in these printable sign language alphabet puzzles!

Printable Sign Language Alphabet Matching Puzzles for Kids

These are wonderful for literacy centers!

Plus, they’d make great quiet time activities, since kids can practice matching up the puzzle pieces again and again.

How Playing Sports Can Help Your Homeschooler

July 11, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

There are lots of studies that support the value of extra-curricular activities for kids. According to some, playing sports (in particular) improves a child’s overall academic performance.

But does that apply to homeschoolers? After all, homeschooling is a very different type of education than public schooling.

Homeschoolers usually have more time to spend pursuing their own interests. And they have less time that they are required to sit still than public schoolers.

It’s been our experience, though, that playing sports can help homeschoolers. Over the years, our kids have played several sports and we’ve seen the benefits personally.

How Playing Sports Can Help Your Homeschooler

If you’re planning your upcoming homeschool year and you’re considering a sport or two, here’s how playing sports can help your homeschooler.

Need more support to outline your school year? Don’t miss our collection of tips for planning your homeschool year too!

Homeschoolers get so many benefits from participating in sports! See how playing sports can help your homeschooler too!

How Playing Sports Can Help Your Homeschooler

Playing sports can improve focus.

Participating in sports helps homeschoolers use up extra energy, which helps them focus better. This is particularly useful for children that struggle with excess energy and attention issues.

Since we have children who are living with ADHD and ADD in our family, this has been a huge benefit of having them play sports. Even my most active child is calmer and more focused after playing a game or two.

Playing sports can help kids develop discipline.

Sports help homeschoolers develop discipline. In our family, this was sorely needed.

Since the kids didn’t have to be up and at school at a particular time each day, they struggled with following a routine. When they had a practice to attend, though, it was much easier to get them up and moving.

In addition, playing team sports, especially track and field, helped them see how their actions affected others and taught them the importance of cheering for their teammates.

We’ve worked our way all the way down to the smallest member of the family. It’s Little Bit’s turn to learn how to swim! True story: Before we left home, she asked me: “Do they let you swim laps during the first lesson?” To which I responded: “You don’t know how to swim yet!” 🏊🏽‍♀️🏊🏽‍♀️🏊🏽‍♀️

A post shared by Look! We’re Learning! (@lookwelearn) on Dec 10, 2018 at 3:30pm PST

Playing sports helps kids use practical math skills.

Do you have a child who’s always asking “But when will I ever use this?” during math class?

They’ll be surprised to learn how much they need math once they start playing sports. You can’t keep score, time your performance, or monitor your progress without it.

And if they really love their sport, they’ll pick these skills up quickly. Much quicker than mine ever did during a math lesson.

Playing sports gives homeschoolers time to work with others.

If you have an only child, you might want to give him or her time to spend with other kids. Playing sports is a fantastic setting for this.

Many people express concerns about homeschoolers and “socialization”. While I don’t think this is a major issue for homeschoolers, extra-curricular sports do give homeschooled kids more opportunities to meet and cooperate with people who are different from them. Which is always a good thing.

Playing sports contributes to good physical and mental health.

Sports are great for your child’s mental health. Getting a little physical activity releases endorphins that contribute to a feeling of happiness. Even my moodiest tween felt better after running, playing tennis, or swimming.

And, since so many kids spend time on screens during the day, sports can help kids get more physical exercise and avoid being sedentary all day.

Playing sports can open up new interests for kids.

If you have a child who never knows what they want to do (I have two like that), then playing sports is also great for helping them to develop new interests.

As kids learn more about their sport, they will start to determine what they like and what they don’t like. This is a great starting point for exploring new hobbies and even career ideas. And it helps them start learning new things too!

A to Z Race! Finish the Alphabet Worksheets for Kids

July 8, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When I was young, I remember learning how to recite the alphabet in order with the ABC song.

Actually, I think every child born before 1985 or so learned it that way.

I thought I could teach my kids the alphabet in the same way. And they did learn to recite the song. But, when it was time to actually start reading, I’d forgotten to help them match up the letters with the sounds in the song.

We had to go back to the beginning and memorize what each letter looked like and then go back and review the order from the song.

These finish the alphabet worksheets for kids make that process just a tad easier.

Finish the Emoji Drawing Activity for Kids

July 1, 2019 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Does anyone have kids who love to draw? My kids love to sketch and color and draw anything they can.

Unfortunately, my artistic skills are somewhat…lacking.

I didn’t draw much as a kid and, now that I’m an adult, I have what I call “artistic cowardice”. You know, that feeling when you think your drawing will be awful so you never have the courage to try? That.

What I’ve discovered, though, is that lots of kids also feel that way. And that’s sad. If you don’t think you can draw when you’re young, it might not get any better later in life.

And I wanted to encourage my kids to keep making art of their own, so I thought I’d dip my toes into drawing too with this fun Emoji Drawing Activity!

Easy Paper Ladybug Craft for Kids

June 24, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Do your kids like ladybugs? Mine have a love/hate relationship with them.

Years ago, our oldest daughter was playing in the backyard when a ladybug flew onto her shirt. Her blood-curdling scream was loud enough to be heard in the next county. I’m almost sure of it.

I tried to calm her down and show her how cute the ladybug was, but no dice. It took a while before she started appreciating how pretty ladybugs are.

My boys did okay with them. They weren’t too interested.

Our youngest daughter, though, loves them. She wants to pick them up every time she sees one.

Which is why I knew she’d love this easy paper ladybug craft! Finally, a ladybug that won’t run away when she tries to hold it.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System

Kids Books about the Solar System

We just posted a fun solar system unit study a couple of weeks back, so I thought I’d share some wonderful books about the solar system for kids of all ages!

I love videos and technology, but there is just nothing like turning the pages of a book with a child. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

So, when it comes to learning, I will always come back to books, which is why I love these solar system books for kids.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System for Kids

These solar system stories are filled with gorgeous illustrations, fun facts, and awesome activities that kids will love! They’d make a wonderful addition to a space or solar system unit.

Read on to see the full list. Hopefully you can find some new favorites to share with your students!

For more ways to learn about outer space, take a look at All About the Solar System – a printable science unit for early elementary grades!

Introduce these solar system books with a quick class discussion about space.

Ask your students: “Can anyone tell me how many planets are in our solar system?”

Let them respond and then follow up by talking about the view astronomers had for years – that there are nine planets that revolve around our sun. These nine planets were referred to as the “solar system”, because they followed an organized rotation around one sun.

Have your students repeat the name of each planet after you.

Solar System Books for Kids to Read

Then talk about how scientists have changed their view over the years. Some now say that Pluto does not qualify as a planet, because of its small size.

Others say that it is still a planet, but should be called a dwarf planet. Still others say that our solar system actually has 13 planets, including new dwarf planets that have been discovered.

Because there is so much still to discover about the solar system, we have a lot to learn!

Which is where these books can help. Choose a couple from the list below to share with your class!

Easy and Fun Outdoor Math Games for Kids

June 13, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Math is one of those topics that children either love or seem to struggle with a little bit.

It’s no different in our family. I have one child who seems to “get” math concepts right away, but for the others, it takes a little time. (And preferably a lot of movement.)

So that’s why I love using outdoor math games for kids to help my children practice some of their most difficult concepts.

With these outdoor math learning activities, kids get to practice their skills, move around, and even get a little messy. They’ll have so much fun they won’t even notice they’re learning!

Fun Outdoor Math Games for Kids

These fun math games would be perfect for outdoor play over summer break, particularly if you’re trying to avoid the summer slide before school resumes in the fall.

Want more ways to keep learning over the break? Don’t miss our list of 40 summer learning activities for kids!

Try some of these easy outdoor math games for kids to play outside! These are wonderful for learning during summer break!

3 DIY Outdoor Math Games for Kids

Sidewalk Chalk Math

What child doesn’t love drawing on the sidewalk with chalk? The chunkier the chalk and the brighter the colors, the better.

Instead of setting indoors doing math worksheets on plain old paper, why not take your little one outside and do your math on the sidewalk? Your child will love walking (or running) around to answer oversized math problems!

Beanbag Toss

Head outdoors with several beanbags and some plastic buckets. Place the plastic buckets on one end and have your child and the beanbags on the other.

Ask your child a math question or write one on the driveway with chalk and have them then toss the correct amount of beanbags into the plastic bucket.

For example: If the math problem is 2 + 3, they would then need to toss five beanbags into the bucket.

Counting Treasure Hunt

Setting up a treasure hunt for your child is a perfect way for them to get out and about in nature and have fun with math! Pick 10 different objects and place them around the yard.

Have your child find those objects and bring them back to you, counting as they go. Once they have found all ten items, it’s time for them to hide some objects from you!

Out of the 10 items, tell them to take three or four to hide. You can also practice subtraction by asking them how many objects are left afterwards.
