52 Weeks to a Healthier You: Healthy Breakfast Ideas

February 9, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Welcome to Week 6 of 52 Weeks to a Healthier You! Last week, we took a look at our eating habits by using a food diary. This week, we’re going to start improving our diets by…drumroll…eating a healthy breakfast!

A lot of adults don’t eat breakfast at all. Personally, if I have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, I pretty much lose my appetite. So it’s very easy for me to have a cup of coffee early on and then nothing until nearly noon. Turns out that’s terrible for our health. (Shocker.)

Let’s take a look at why we need to eat breakfast and get a few healthy breakfast ideas for the most important meal of the day!

Disclaimer: I am not a health or fitness expert. Please consult a medical professional before starting any new health or fitness regimen.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Image: Mara Zemgaliete / Dollar Photo Club

Why We Should Eat Breakfast

According to WebMD, eating breakfast sets the tone for the rest of our day. Think about it: How often have you been out running errands and realized suddenly that you were STARVING? What did you do? I’ll tell you what I did. I made a beeline for the nearest drive-thru, where I proceeded to order something extremely unhealthy. And that’s what happens when we skip breakfast or go too long without eating in general. We end up ravenous and we make bad food choices later.

Sometimes we think that skipping a meal will lower our caloric intake and help us drop pounds faster. However, the meal we skip should NOT be breakfast. Eating breakfast can actually reduce our risk of serious health conditions, including heart disease and obesity. Time.com suggests eating something that will stabilize our blood sugar levels, which means skipping the sweet rolls. *sob*

Healthy Breakfast Ideas

If you’re at a loss as to what to eat first thing in the morning, try these suggestions!

  • Whole grain English muffin with scrambled egg white and spinach
  • Scrambled egg, one strip turkey bacon, roasted asparagus
  • Oatmeal with fresh fruit
  • Green smoothie (We’ll be talking more about these in an upcoming week!)
  • Whole grain cereal with skim milk, soy milk, or almond milk and fresh fruit
  • Low-sugar yogurt with granola, honey, and fruit
  • Baked sweet potato with cinnamon and honey (That one’s from the Time.com article. Sounds great!)

Do you eat breakfast on a regular basis? If so, do you have any healthy breakfast ideas to share? Let them loose in the comments! For even more support, join our 52 Weeks to a Healthier You Facebook group!

Tips for Homeschool Planning with Family Fun Friday!

February 5, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

If you start your homeschool in the fall of each year, you might be thinking that it’s a bit early for homeschool planning. But mid-year is actually a great time to start thinking of what you’d like to change next year.

This week, I’m featuring six posts from last week’s Family Fun Friday that are great for getting a jump on planning your homeschool! If you’re a blogger, don’t forget to link up your own posts for a chance to be featured next week!

Tips for Homeschool Planning

1. Facing challenges in your homeschool can do a number on a child’s self-esteem. The Golden Rule Kids has seven tips for building our children’s self-esteem. If kids feel good about themselves, they can learn anything!

2. Do you have older children who you’re planning to homeschool? As kids get older, they may become even more curious about public school life. (If so, they can have a look at our experiment with public school for a reality check.) Mum in the Madhouse has a great post on how to encourage our older kids to learn at home.

3. We have always used our dining room for homeschooling, but I’ve wanted a dedicated homeschool room for the longest. If you’re unsure how to set up your homeschooling space for next year, Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus has a helpful post comparing dedicated homeschool rooms with dining room homeschools.

4. I love the printable packs from Tree Valley Academy! We don’t use printables as much as we used to, since the kids are in school right now. But I’ll be starting Piglet off with a few tot school activities in the coming months. This printable Number Five number study is great for little learners!

5. Maybe it’s just because I’m so over cold weather, but A Life in Balance’s post on how to plan a fun, active summer with kids really resonated with me this week. I’m looking forward to creating an unforgettable summer with my kids and these tips are great for planning the summer!

6. There’s been a definite increase in coding for kids, which is a great thing! But it also leads to a LOT of screen time, which is a not so great thing. Sheila at Brain Power Boy has a fabulous resource to help you teach kids to code without using the computer at all! Nifty!

How to Deal with a Homeschooling Dawdler

February 3, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Hey everyone! It’s Tuesday, time for the Laugh and Learn linky! We’ve picked our favorites from last week and we’re thrilled to share them with you all! If you’re a blogger, link up your own posts below!

I also wanted to share an article that I wrote recently for The Homeschool Post that might be of encouragement if you’re dealing with one of the possible obstacles to happy homeschooling: a dawdler.

How to Deal with a Dawdler

How to Deal with a Homeschooling Dawdler

Do you have a child who has no motivation to do his or her schoolwork? Have you spent hours trying to nudge, prod, and coerce your student into finishing his assignment? Congratulations! You’ve got a homeschooling dawdler.

I have a dawdler of my own, and I know from experience that it can be a very trying situation. This is even worse when you have more than one child, since the dawdler (who shall remain nameless) can even interfere with the other kids’ progress.

After a lot of frustration, I finally learned a few suggestions for dealing with a homeschool dawdler and I recently got to share them in an article over at The Homeschool Post. Click over to read how I deal with a dawdler in our family!

52 Weeks to a Healthier You: Keep a Food Diary

February 2, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We’re on to Week 5 of 52 Weeks to a Healthier You! We’ve already talked about making an honest self-assessment, drinking more water, finding fitness motivation, and improving our sleep habits. Now, we’re finally ready to start talking about what we eat.

If you’re fearing a brand new diet plan, you can breathe easy. 🙂 We’re just going to start by taking a look at what we’re currently eating by using a free printable food diary. Rather than making any drastic changes right away, it’s a great idea to see what you’re already consuming on a weekly basis, so you can make gradual adjustments that are more likely to stick.

Here’s a primer on why and how we can keep a food diary!

Disclaimer: I am not a health or fitness expert. Please consult a medical professional before starting any new health or fitness regimen.

How to Keep a Food Diary

Image: Minerva Studio / Dollar Photo Club

Why Keeping a Food Diary is Important

You might be wondering: Why is it necessary to keep a food diary in the first place? Well, it’s not actually necessary, but it can be extremely helpful. WebMD explains that writing down what you eat has the instant effect of making you aware of your food choices. (I can tell you that I’ve often refrained from eating a certain junk food just because I didn’t want to have to write it down.)

It’s also helpful because you can take a look at your eating habits over time, so if you’re consistently eating a certain food, especially if it’s unhealthy, then you can take note of the time of day you choose it and what potentially triggers your cravings.

How to Keep a Food Diary

Okay, so what’s involved in keeping a food diary? It’s simple. You just write down everything you eat. Every. Single. Thing. (Yes, this includes gum and mints and those individual M&Ms that you sneak during the day.)

Along with the food you eat, Real Simple explains that it’s also helpful to write down your emotions at the time you eat. Are you sad, happy, bored, frustrated, or distracted? Keeping track of these feelings can help you spot any tendencies toward binge or emotional eating.

New York City Unit Study

Since there are so many famous landmarks and geographical features in NYC, it can be tough to narrow them all down for a unit study!

We took a trip up there earlier this year and while we drove through the city, my conversation was basically “Oh, there’s the Brooklyn Bridge! Wait, there’s the Empire State Building! Kids, look! It’s the Hudson River!” Not the best way to learn about the city.

So I’m excited to share these activities and books that can help kids get a better understanding of what makes the city so special!

New York City Video Tour

Watch the following video about New York City and ask your kids to answer the questions below.

1. How many pizzerias are in New York City?

Answer: 9000

2. Name one special feature of the Empire State Building.

Answer: The top 30 floors change colors to represent seasons and events of the year.

3. How does the Whispering Gallery at Grand Central Station work?

Answer: A person can stand in one corner and hear what a person standing diagonally whispers into the wall.

4. When was the Atlantic Avenue subway tunnel built?

Answer: 1844

5. How many trees are in Central Park?

Answer: 25,000

6. How many sculptures are in Central Park?

Answer: 29

7. How many floors does a building need to be considered as a skyscraper?

Multilingual Blog Carnival: Teaching about World Cultures

January 26, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I’m thrilled to be hosting this month’s edition of the Multilingual Blog Carnival! We’ve been teaching our kids American Sign Language and Spanish, but we’ve also gotten to try French as well.

However, one of the most important parts of learning another language is learning about the culture associated with it. For example, if kids learn American Sign Language without gaining an understanding of deaf culture, they can view ASL as nothing more than a novelty. If that happens, they can easily offend a deaf or hard-of-hearing person when they try to communicate.

So for this month’s Multilingual Blog Carnival, I wanted to focus on why and how we should be teaching about world cultures. There are several great suggestions for approaching a study of world cultures for kids and I’m excited to share them today!

Teaching about World Cultures

Suggestions for Teaching about World Cultures

Here are some great blog posts featuring reasons why we should teach our kids about world cultures and how we can do so! Be sure to stop by and show these great bloggers some love!

1. Marianna at Bilingual Avenue shares a great post for native multilingual parents about why they should retain their cultural connections and share them with their kids. We can even make language learning into a special bonding time with our little ones!

2. If we’re going to teach our kids to be multilingual, we can certainly start by teaching to appreciate the diverse nature of our world. Third Culture Mama shares her own experiences with neighbors and friends from other cultures and how she’s ensuring that her kids value and respect those differences.

3. Maria at Trilingual Mama has some great ideas for teaching our kids to respect international cultures, including making friends with other multicultural families, introducing kids to different cultures from an early age, and using Internet resources to teach foreign language and world culture.
