New Ways to Teach Classic Subjects with Family Fun Friday!

July 23, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

We don’t officially start our new school year until September, but I’m still loving all of the “back to school” posts! I think back to school time is probably one of my favorite times of year. The frustrations of the new year haven’t happened yet. 🙂

This year, I’m really trying to break out of my comfort zone and find new ways to teach classic subjects. I’m very much a traditional learner and teacher, but my kids are not. Since they have ADHD, they love to move and they need a lot of novelty in order to keep their attention on the lesson.

So I was glad to see some fabulous homeschooling posts during last week’s Family Fun Friday that highlighted some novel ways to make traditional school subjects fun! Check out my favorites from last week below! Be sure to scroll on down and read this week’s newest posts as well!

Homeschool Inspiration Ideas with Family Fun Friday!

May 14, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Pooh is taking his math standardized test in school this week. Since math is not his strong subject, he’s been a bit nervous. Still, we’ve managed to help him get through the process of testing (as we did with Tigger a couple of grades back).

Standardized testing can be a real challenge to kids, whether they’re in public school or homeschool. So I wanted to share a post I got to write over at The Multi Taskin’ Mom that’s all about how to help kids deal with this process.

Today is also another edition of Family Fun Friday! Scroll on down to read some great homeschool inspiration ideas!

Helping Kids Manage Standardized Testing

Here in our state, they’re using a new standardized test this year and the teachers spent a LOT of time preparing the kids to take it. However, since Pooh is in first grade, he hasn’t had a lot of practice with testing. When we homeschooled, I didn’t administer a standardized test until third grade. (I plan on resuming that policy once we return to homeschooling this fall.)

I have learned, though, that it’s important to help kids get comfortable with the testing process, especially if they have to test earlier. Stop by The Multi Taskin’ Mom to learn more about how to help kids manage standardized testing!

And now…it’s time for Family Fun Friday! 🙂

Last week, there were some great posts shared with homeschool inspiration ideas! Naturally, I’m in full school-year-planning mode, so I’m on the hunt for all kinds of fun ideas to do next year with the kids. Read on to see my favorites from last week!

February 5, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

If you start your homeschool in the fall of each year, you might be thinking that it’s a bit early for homeschool planning. But mid-year is actually a great time to start thinking of what you’d like to change next year.

This week, I’m featuring six posts from last week’s Family Fun Friday that are great for getting a jump on planning your homeschool! If you’re a blogger, don’t forget to link up your own posts for a chance to be featured next week!

Tips for Homeschool Planning

1. Facing challenges in your homeschool can do a number on a child’s self-esteem. The Golden Rule Kids has seven tips for building our children’s self-esteem. If kids feel good about themselves, they can learn anything!

2. Do you have older children who you’re planning to homeschool? As kids get older, they may become even more curious about public school life. (If so, they can have a look at our experiment with public school for a reality check.) Mum in the Madhouse has a great post on how to encourage our older kids to learn at home.

3. We have always used our dining room for homeschooling, but I’ve wanted a dedicated homeschool room for the longest. If you’re unsure how to set up your homeschooling space for next year, Tina’s Dynamic Homeschool Plus has a helpful post comparing dedicated homeschool rooms with dining room homeschools.

4. I love the printable packs from Tree Valley Academy! We don’t use printables as much as we used to, since the kids are in school right now. But I’ll be starting Piglet off with a few tot school activities in the coming months. This printable Number Five number study is great for little learners!

5. Maybe it’s just because I’m so over cold weather, but A Life in Balance’s post on how to plan a fun, active summer with kids really resonated with me this week. I’m looking forward to creating an unforgettable summer with my kids and these tips are great for planning the summer!

6. There’s been a definite increase in coding for kids, which is a great thing! But it also leads to a LOT of screen time, which is a not so great thing. Sheila at Brain Power Boy has a fabulous resource to help you teach kids to code without using the computer at all! Nifty!

So – it’s a great time to start gathering ideas for a new homeschool year! We had some excellent educational posts shared during the last edition of Family Fun Friday and I wanted to highlight a few today. Check below to read even more great posts, including some for educators and parents!

Math and Science Ideas for Homeschoolers with Family Fun Friday!

October 23, 2014 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

Welcome to another edition of Family Fun Friday! Last week we highlighted Homeschooling Helps for All Ages, but this week we’re focusing on two subjects that can pose problems for homeschoolers: math and science.

I loved math in elementary school, but I lost my interest in it somewhere around 7th grade. Coincidentally, that was about the time that we started studying Algebra I. 🙂 I’ve never really been a huge science fan. So I’m always looking for ways to make these two subjects fun for my kids.

This week’s features include some great math and science ideas for homeschoolers! Some even include sensory play, fine motor skills, and crafts! Don’t forget to link up your own posts! 😉
