20 Fascinating Books about Black Inventors and Scientists for Kids to Read - Perfect for Black History Month!

20 Fascinating Books about Black Inventors and Scientists

January 24, 2019 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

My youngest son is obsessed with making things. He’s built a working fishing pole, a wobble racer, and even a 3-D paper basketball playset, complete with players who actually shoot the ball into the hoop.

We’ve always encouraged our kids to learn about their history, so I thought it would be cool for him to read some books about black inventors and scientists. That way, he learns about history and he finds out that other people like him have had big ideas that they turned into real things that helped society.

Talk about a self-esteem boost!

Share these fascinating books about black inventors and scientists with the kids!

I wanted to share these storybooks with all of you because we’ve enjoyed reading them. (Some are even in our home library.) But they’d also make excellent choices for a STEM unit or a Black History Month lesson. In our family, we like to read about them all year.

Animal science isn't complete without a lesson on animal diets. See how we learned about herbivores and carnivores with BookShark!

Learning about Animal Diets with Kids

January 14, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My kids, like almost all kids, love learning about animals. We’ve studied animal habitats, animals who are nocturnal and diurnal, and animals who hibernate already.

With our youngest, though, it was time to learn about animal diets: which animal eats what. And nothing makes that concept more real than a field trip to interact with actual animals.

Oh – and our animal diets lesson from BookShark was a huge help too!

Read on to see how we learned about herbivores and carnivores with our small students!

And for more hands-on ways to study animal science, don’t miss our Sharks Food Chain Game for kids!

Animal science isn't complete without a lesson on animal diets. See how we learned about herbivores and carnivores with BookShark!

Studying Animal Diets with Kids

We started our lesson with a section in BookShark’s Level 1 animal science curriculum. BookShark uses a book-based approach to learning and science is no different.

BookShark Animal Diets Lesson

In the Usborne Book of Animals, we examined how different animals eat different things. Some eat plants and seeds (herbivores), while some eat other animals (carnivores).

BookShark Animal Diets Printable Lesson

Interestingly, you can usually tell which animal eats what by looking at the shape of their mouths and the shape of their teeth. That is, if you can get close enough to one to actually check that out.

After a bit of reviewing, our first grader learned how to distinguish the carnivores and herbivores.

But, there’s nothing like seeing animals firsthand to help kids remember what they learned!

Learning about Animal Diets

So we took a trip to a nearby wildlife refuge to see some herbivores and carnivores up close!

We saw bison. (herbivores)

This positively regal turkey was quite a sight. (herbivore)

The tropical birds were gorgeous, but incredibly loud too. (herbivores)

Feeding Animals at a Wildlife Refuge

The kids even got a chance to feed deer by hand. (herbivores)

Learning about Herbivores and Carnivores

From far away, we spotted a white tiger. (carnivore)

As you can see, you can also tell what eats what by how close you’re allowed to get to the animal. 🙂

A very friendly zebra came up to the fence to meet us. (herbivore)

Close Encounters with Animals at a Wildlife Refuge

This sweet donkey was docile enough to be petted. (herbivore)

Observing Animals Who are Omnivores

Finally, we met a grizzly bear, which we learned eats both plants and met (primarily fish). So we had a chat about the animals who aren’t really herbivores or carnivores – they’re omnivores.

Which is what most humans identify as too. I think my kids might be dessert-ivores, though.

Superhero States of Matter for Second Graders Science Lesson

December 20, 2018 by Selena Robinson 7 Comments

Superhero States of Matter Printable Pack

It’s time for another of our second-grade activities this week and today is all about states of matter for second graders.

Superheroes are all the rage right now and Pooh is a huge fan of them as well. So, when it was time to talk about states of matter in science, I thought I’d add a little “superpower” to our lesson. And I’m sharing it with all of you today!

Superhero States of Matter Printable Science Lesson for Kids

Read on to see how we learned about states of matter with our Superhero States of Matter Printable Pack! By the way, be sure to grab our free Superhero Student Planner Pages as well!

Superhero States of Matter for Second Grade

This printable second grade science lesson includes everything you need to demonstrate the three states of matter with a simple experiment.

The supply list tells you what you’ll need and the instructions, which are written to students, explain how to perform each step.

Printable observation sheets allow students to analyze the experiment’s results.

How to Use the Superhero States of Matter for Second Graders Science Lesson

In the second grade, one of the science objectives to cover involves discussing the three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas.

To help Pooh see how matter can change state and to help him grasp the concept, we did a simple science experiment with water.

States of Matter for Second Graders

The prodcut explains exactly how to do the experiment – step by step. It’s written in a way that second-graders should be able to understand the directions on their own.

But a couple of the steps require adult supervision, so this activity should not be done independently.

States of Matter for Second Graders

We started by observing how water changes from a liquid to a solid after freezing.

States of Matter for Second Graders

Then Pooh wrote down his observations.

States of Matter for Second Graders

After the ice melted, we observed how the water had changed (once again) into a liquid.

States of Matter for Second Graders

Then it was time to learn about the third state of matter: gas! (This is where kids need adult supervision.)

States of Matter for Second Graders

As the water slowly boiled away, Pooh was excited to learn that it was evaporating – converting itself to steam (a gas). He wrote down his final observations and reviewed the experiment’s results.

Look! An actual gap-toothed smile!

Pooh had a blast with this and it was a “super” way to learn about the three states of matter in an hands-on manner.

The Jungle Book Movie Study Printable for Kids

December 17, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My daughters are huge fans of the movie The Jungle Book. I mean HUGE fans. They ask me to rewatch it all the time.

Because I’m a child of the 80s, I was initially resistant to the idea of The Jungle Book being remade. Cartoon Baloo singing “The Bare Necessities” is good stuff.

But once I sat down and watched it with them, I could understand the appeal. It’s a great film. And it’s also an excellent opportunity to learn a thing or two.

So I’m sharing a printable The Jungle Book movie study that you can use with your kids while you watch this film. After all, if they’re going to watch something over and over again, they might as well learn something, right?

The Jungle Book Printable Movie Study Activity for Kids

Keep reading to see how to grab this printable for your kids! I’m sure they’ll love it as much as mine do.

The Jungle Book Movie Study for Kids

In this movie study, you’ll find four learning printables that include both ELA and science concepts.

By the way, if you’re doing a jungle unit study, this would be a perfect add-on activity, particularly if you include the original book by Rudyard Kipling as a read-along.

The Jungle Book Movie Study Discussion for Kids

An answer key is included in the study for two of the activities, but I wanted to keep the discussion questions more open-ended. If the kids don’t get the answers “right”, encourage them to rewatch it and find out what they missed.

The Jungle Book Printable Movie Study

There are 13 discussion questions included in the study. For younger children, you might just discuss the questions and answers together. Older kids can write or type their answers. Or you could just sit on the floor and talk about it as a family.

Kids will love to learn some cool facts about tigers in the Tiger learning activity.

Printable The Jungle Book Movie Study for Kids

But The Jungle Book has more than just tigers in it! With the Animals of Jungle Book printable, they’ll get to test their knowledge about animal diets to figure out which animals eat what.

Circling back to the film, the Character analysis worksheet lets the kids come up with their own ways to describe the principal characters of the movie. This is a great ELA activity for story retelling!

Snow Globe Grammar: Parts of Speech Sorting Activity

December 13, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I am a huge grammar nerd. I’ve always loved learning about language and how we use it.

My oldest is a fellow ELA junkie, but my middle kids are…less enthusiastic about learning the rules of lexicon. Plus, I just wanted to make a basic ELA lesson more fun, especially for our rising second grader.

So we came up with this hands-on parts of speech sorting activity: Snow Globe Grammar! This is a perfect way to introduce different parts of speech to young learners – with a fun winter theme.

Elementary Snow Globe Parts of Speech Sorting Game

If you use literacy centers, this would be an excellent prep and reuse activity. Or if you wanted to make it into a one-time lesson, you could use it as a cut-and-paste activity for early grades.

Read on to see how to get your copy of this parts of speech sorting lesson! And, if you’d like more practice with ELA and foreign language, don’t miss our printable Spanish verb flashcards!

How to Teach Your Child to Read In 7 Easy Steps

December 10, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Learning to read is one of the most important and celebrated milestones in education. And with good reason! If you can read, you can do anything else you want in life.

If we want our kids to become readers for life, though, we have to start teaching them to love reading while they’re young.

There are a lot of excellent books on how to teach your child to read, but after raising four readers in our family, I’ve learned that teaching a child to read doesn’t have to be a complicated event.

How to Teach Your Child to Read In 7 Steps

When you’re first starting out, though, it can definitely seem overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure where to start. Here are seven simple steps for teaching your child to read you can use, no matter where you’re at in your parenting journey.

And if you want even more ways to make reading enjoyable for children, check out these tips for encouraging your active kids to read for fun!

Disclosure: I am a BookShark brand ambassador and am receiving free curriculum as part of my role.

Do you want to raise readers? Learn how to teach your child to read in just seven steps!

Practice Patience

Patience is a must when you’re teaching a child to read. Every child masters concepts at their own pace, so your little one might not be on the same level as the kid down the street who is a year younger.

Start introducing a new skill and, if your child is resistant or doesn’t seem to be getting the lesson, table it and try again another day. Keep things light and fun to help them grow their love for reading.

Master the Alphabet

Kids can’t learn to read without understanding the components of a word, so it is important to help them get a solid grasp the alphabet. Begin with the letters that are most familiar to them, particularly those within their name, and teach them one at a time.

Show them how to identify the letters and talk about the sounds that they make. They’ll quickly begin to understand how they come together to form words.

Keep Phonics Simple

When your child has a grasp on the alphabet, start introducing basic phonics. Don’t worry about all of the exceptions to the phonics rules at first. Stick with beginning letter sounds, short vowels, and long vowels.

Once your child can remember these phonic sounds, you can explain that there are words that follow their own rules and save those lessons for when they have a better grasp on the basics. Basic word sounds and common blends are all they need at this early stage.

Begin Introducing Sight Words

Common words that appear frequently in writing are called sight words. These are often hard to sound out or don’t follow typical phonics rules.

By helping your child to identify these words, even before they are technically “reading” them, they will be able to string together sentences a little more easily. Be sure to emphasize spelling as you’re teaching these words to maximize the impact of the lessons.

Make Reading Together a Conversation

An easy way to build reading comprehension is to discuss what you read along with your child.

As you read together, talk about the plot of the book and why the events took place. Help them to understand the possible emotions of a character and guess what might happen next.

Over time, kids will start to attach meaning to the words they read, especially when they understand the context, and their comprehension skills will blossom.

Find Everyday Opportunities to Make Reading a Game

As you go through your day, play simple games that will help build your child’s reading skills. For example, go on a letter scavenger hunt during your trip to the grocery store by finding the alphabet in order on package labels.

Or as you’re driving around town, have them find words that begin with a certain letter on the signs that they pass. Then challenge them to spot words they’ve recently learned while you’re out running errands.

As you actively seek these teachable moments, you’ll find that they are everywhere!

Use a Book-Based Curriculum

One of the best ways to teach your child to read is to use a homeschooling curriculum that is literature-based. We’re using BookShark with our youngest child this year and it is wonderful for building reading fluency, comprehension, and interest.

A Selection of BookShark Readers for Kids

Books are involved in the reading, history, geography, and science lessons, so our first grader spends most of her learning time reading different kinds of literature, including fiction, first readers, instruction manuals, reference books, and more.

Instead of thinking of reading as a separate school subject, BookShark weaves it into everything a child is learning, which is wonderful practice for reading for life.

With these suggestions, you too will be able to teach your child to read in 7 steps! Remember, each child is different. Some learn to read at three, others at six, still others later on.

The speed at which your child learns to read is not important, though. What matters is that they learn to love reading, whenever they begin.

If you make reading part of their everyday experience and use a program like BookShark to include reading in every school subject, you’re sure to raise bookworms of your own!

How to Teach History with a Timeline

November 26, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

If you’re teaching your kids at home, you’ve probably discovered that there are several ways to learn how to teach history.

You could do it by starting with the history of the country in which you live and then proceeding out to the rest of the world. Many curriculum companies use this approach.

You could start with modern history and then work your way back to the ancients.

You could follow your child’s interests and cover historical periods according to what they want to learn at the moment.

Or you could teach history chronologically – in order of how it occurred.

How to Teach History With a Timeline

Personally, I love the chronological approach. But, no matter which historical teaching method you use, history always makes more sense with a timeline.

What is a history timeline? Why should you learn how to teach history with a timeline? Read on to see why we love using timelines in our history lessons with our kids!

And for more history learning fun, don’t miss our African Kingdoms unit study. It’s a semester-long thematic unit all about the royal kingdoms of ancient Africa!

Disclosure: I am a BookShark brand ambassador and am receiving free curriculum as part of my role.

How to Teach History with a Timeline

So – what’s a history timeline? It’s exactly what it sounds like: a line for recording historical events in the order in which they happened.

For example, if you’re studying Ancient Egypt, you might start with a discussion of how the Old Kingdom emerged as a major civilization. You’d begin with that topic and mark the appearance of the first recorded Egyptian king on your timeline, along with the years of his reign.

As you learn about subsequent kings, you’d add them to your timeline during the following years.

How to Learn History with a Timeline Using BookShark

However – and this is what makes history timelines so great – you’re not bound to that one topic. You can switch and learn about other civilizations that existed concurrently with Ancient Egypt, such as the Sumerian civilization and the Indus Valley civilization.

You’d record those rulers and their reigns in the years in which they occurred as well. As a result, when your kids look at a specific period in human history, say, 3500 – 3000 B.C.E., they’d be able to see which kingdoms were in existence, which were on the decline, and which were just emerging.

This is incredible for understanding not just which civilizations existed and when, but how they came about and what contributed to their development. It adds so much context to what’s happened among humans over the past centuries.

How to Teach History with BookShark

With BookShark, all of the historical events are covered using the timeline approach. And, if you’re new to learning how to teach history in this way, the prepared lesson plans in the curriculum make it simple.

BookShark History Timeline Kit for Level 1

The lesson plan for each week’s history lesson explains when you will use the timeline book and figures. As you get to those activities, you simply help your child cut out the correct figure and place it in the timeline book at the year specified.

When you move through the program, you’ll gradually fill in your timeline with other important figures you discuss with the kids.

Exploring Ancient History Timelines with BookShark

But BookShark doesn’t just include timelines for history. The program incorporates several excellent history resources to explain exactly what was happening and who was involved.

Kids can find out what life was like in those historical periods, make fun crafts and activities, and learn how these ancient civilizations have influenced our modern lives.

So, when they go back and look at the timeline, they remember when events occurred and, more importantly, why these events were significant.

For more on the BookShark approach to how to teach history, check out the website to see which periods are covered in each grade level.

Printable Spanish Telling Time Worksheets for Kids

As you’ll see, the Spanish way of telling time is fairly simple. In English, we use “o’ clock” to identify time based on the numbers on the clock face.

Printable Spanish Telling Time Worksheets

In Spanish, though, people just refer to the number of hours. So instead of 1 o’clock, in Spanish you’d say “Es la una“, which literally means “It is one.” No “o’clock” needed!

After 1 o’clock, Spanish time phrases include “Son las dos” (It is two.), “Son las tres” (It is three), and so on.

Portrait Style Homeschool Art Courses with Sparketh

September 28, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My ten-year-old son is the artist in the family. And by that I mean he wants to be an artist. He’s very interested in drawing and painting, but sadly, neither his father nor I are qualified in the least to teach him those skills.

What’s more, we don’t have any local homeschool art programs that are affordable enough for us at the moment.

Last year, my son got to try the homeschool art courses from Sparketh and he was absolutely hooked. So when we found out that Sparketh now offers portrait style art courses, he jumped at the opportunity to try them.

Sparketh Portrait Style Homeschool Art Courses

In just a few days, he had produced his very first portrait – with no formal artistic training! It was amazing to watch. In fact, it actually made me want to try learning to paint myself.

Read on to see how Sparketh’s portrait style art courses work and how you can use them as a comprehensive homeschool art program with your family!

Disclosure: I received access to this program in exchange for this post and I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Ready to help your budding artist take talent to the next level? Try the portrait style homeschool art courses from Sparketh!

Sparketh Portrait Style Homeschool Art Courses

Sparketh is an online video art program that offers various courses and projects for kids (and adults) to complete. Each course is broken into short videos that demonstrate exactly how to draw or paint a specific object or person.

As students go through each step, they gradually produce their own works of art.

Sparketh Homeschool Art Courses

In addition to their individual art project courses, Sparketh now offers an Art Style Portraits track with several portrait courses in various styles.

As you can see from the list, students can create portraits in Pop Art, Fauvism, Minimalism, and other specific artistic styles. There’s even a manga style course for comic fans!

Sparketh Harlem Renaissance Portrait Homeschool Art Course

My son wanted to begin with the Harlem Renaissance Portrait Course. In this project, students look at a snapshot and repaint it in the cultural style popular during the Harlem Renaissance – one of our favorite periods in history.

All he had to do was click “Join Course” and we were off and running!

Learning to Paint a Portrait with Sparketh Homeschool Art Courses

I should note here that we have tried other video art lessons. Here’s what sets Sparketh’s homeschool art course apart, in my opinion:

  • The courses are short, which keeps students from getting overwhelmed. The entire Harlem Renaissance Portrait course is only 31 minutes long.
  • The platform is very easy to follow. Students can read the supply list before getting started and then decide how much of the project they want to complete that day.
  • Individual steps are broken into separate short videos. This is excellent for kids who have attention concerns (like several of our children do).
  • The videos show the art instructors as they work. My son was able to pause the video and look directly at what the artist did and then recreate it himself.

Taking Homeschool Art Lessons with Sparketh

Once he’d gathered his supplies (and we didn’t need many for this course), he got started.

Learning to Draw with Sparketh Homeschool Art Courses

The instructor showed him how to begin by sketching his portrait, which he did.

Homeschool Art with Sparketh

He simply paused the video to catch up and follow the instructor’s work.

Using Sparketh for Homeschool Art Lessons

Then he moved on to outlining his picture with marker.

Sparketh Homeschool Art Courses for Kids

Like so.

As you might be able to tell, he did the sketching and outlining all within one day. I had to make him stop for that afternoon. That’s how much he loved using Sparketh.

Learning to Paint with Sparketh Homeschool Art Lessons

Later, he went back and added his watercolor paint and he was done!

Learning to Paint Portraits with Sparketh Homeschool Art Courses

I think he might have asked me for help to understand the instruction once during the entire course.

Sparketh is easy enough for a ten-year-old to follow all on his own, so it’s a stress-free homeschool art course for parents. You can just sign your child up for an account and let him or her work through the projects.

Art class for the year? Check.

Want to try Sparketh’s Portrait Style Art Courses with your child? Just sign up on the Sparketh website and let your child browse the list to find a project to try!

It’s time for another entry in our second grade activity series!

This week, we’re talking about how to help second graders count and identify syllables in common words.

In second grade, we tend to start helping students read slightly longer words. And that’s when it’s good to start sounding out syllables.

To add a fun fall theme to this concept, we’re sharing a fun Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade activity!

Fun Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson

This printable activity is an excellent literacy builder for early elementary students!

And, depending on your students’ vocabulary skills, it may even be useful in third grade classes as well.

And for more early elementary learning, take a look at our Superhero States of Matter Science Lesson! It’s an excellent and easy hands-on science lab for early grades.

How to Teach Syllables in Early Grades

With our second grader, we use the typical “clap it out” method to count syllables.

So we’ll have him say a word and then for each sound he hears, he claps his hands.

For example, when he says the word “amazing”, he’ll end up clapping three times: A-MAZ-ING.

That helps him see that there are three syllables in the word.

Scarecrow Syllable Counting Lesson for Elementary

Before we got started with the lesson, I asked my second grader if he knew what syllables were.

His response: “Oh yeah, I learned that in school.”

Me: “Really? What are they?”

Him: “They’re all the letters in a word.”

Scarecrow Syllables for Second Grade Pack - Look! We're Learning!

He was really serious about that explanation.

After we talked about what syllables really were, we tried matching up the words with the right number of scarecrows.

The “clap it out” method worked beautifully!

If your homeschooling day starts badly, it can be a real challenge to get it back on track. Here are a few tips to help you learn how to start the homeschool day right each morning!

How to Start the Homeschool Day Right

September 6, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

It’s the start of a new homeschooling year and, for many of us, that brings a ton of excitement about our new books, our new curriculum, and the kids’ new grade levels.

But we’ve been at this homeschooling thing for nearly ten years now and I’m here to tell you that the excitement… is going to fade. In fact, it seems like the longer you homeschool, the quicker it fades. And a lot of that comes down to having a rough homeschool day – or two or ten.

It’s so easy to think that you’re going to start the homeschool day right, only to have it dissolve into two shouting matches, a sibling fight, and a crying fit over a math problem by 11:00.

How to Start the Homeschool Day Right

For years, I fell into the trap of planning weeks of lessons and then falling off the homeschool wagon just a few days in. I thought I needed to change my curriculum, revamp my schedule, or even try public school for a while.

I didn’t realize that I was planning my homeschool years right, but starting my homeschool days completely wrong. Here’s what I’ve learned about how to start the homeschool day right.

Take a look to see what didn’t work for me and what finally is working – after all this time.

If your homeschooling day starts badly, it can be a real challenge to get it back on track. Here are a few tips to help you learn how to start the homeschool day right each morning!

Plan your day’s lessons and activities in advance.

Please, please, please do not set yourself up for failure by thinking you can do this on the morning you plan to teach a lesson. You won’t get up early and plan for it. Trust me. You just won’t. (I cannot tell you how many school days I’ve given up on because I fell for this idea.)

Take some time to set up a flexible plan for your school week. Shoot for having the lessons for the week done by the previous Friday. Then try to schedule only a few full days and leave yourself some space for lessons that take a little…longer than expected.

Have a family meeting first thing in the morning.

This one took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out. And, really, this tip came from my husband. Whenever he’s home during the day, he gets up and goes into the kids’ rooms to talk with them about how they’re feeling that morning.

As he told me, “That’s the best way to find out what’s on their minds before we get started. Otherwise, they won’t be able to focus on what we’re teaching, because their minds are somewhere else.”

So I started doing this on our homeschooling days too. When everyone gets up, I talk to them all individually to see how they’re feeling, what they’re thinking, and what they want to do that day.

I tell them we’ll try to get at least some of what they’d like done – after we finish our school lessons. It really does help them put those thoughts aside (at least for a while) to begin the school day.

Eat a really good breakfast.

Remember those old cereal commercials we used to see on Saturday morning? The ones that show the bowl of cereal, along with toast, eggs, and a glass of orange juice as part of a “balanced breakfast”?

They weren’t kidding. Kids really need to eat a filling breakfast to start the day, especially once they hit puberty.

I was allowing my kids to make their own breakfast for a while. That led to eating less than they needed, because they often didn’t “feel” like cooking as much as they should have.

Now that I’m back to making breakfast (and they make their own lunches and snacks), they actually get full and their moods are ten times better, which makes our entire homeschool day run smoother.

How BookShark Helps Me Start the Homeschool Day Right

One of the biggest changes that’s helping me start our homeschool days off right is using BookShark with my youngest.

BookShark is a year-long, book-based curriculum that includes ELA, history, and science for grades K-8. I’m using it for our first grader this year and it has done wonders for my homeschooling routine.

Because BookShark plans the weekly lessons for you, I have her daily plans done in no time. I just look over the prepared plan, review the books we’ll need, and we’re off and running the next week.
