Practice drawing with the kids with this fun and simple Emoji drawing activity! This is a perfect way to share a summer art project with the kids!

Finish the Emoji Drawing Activity for Kids

July 1, 2019 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Does anyone have kids who love to draw? My kids love to sketch and color and draw anything they can.

Unfortunately, my artistic skills are somewhat…lacking.

I didn’t draw much as a kid and, now that I’m an adult, I have what I call “artistic cowardice”. You know, that feeling when you think your drawing will be awful so you never have the courage to try? That.

What I’ve discovered, though, is that lots of kids also feel that way. And that’s sad. If you don’t think you can draw when you’re young, it might not get any better later in life.

And I wanted to encourage my kids to keep making art of their own, so I thought I’d dip my toes into drawing too with this fun Emoji Drawing Activity!

Fun Finish the Emoji Drawing Activity for Kids

Since these are faces that are already half designed, all kids have to do is finish the other half. It’s easy enough for an art coward like me to do!

Easy Paper Ladybug Craft for Kids

June 24, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Do your kids like ladybugs? Mine have a love/hate relationship with them.

Years ago, our oldest daughter was playing in the backyard when a ladybug flew onto her shirt. Her blood-curdling scream was loud enough to be heard in the next county. I’m almost sure of it.

I tried to calm her down and show her how cute the ladybug was, but no dice. It took a while before she started appreciating how pretty ladybugs are.

My boys did okay with them. They weren’t too interested.

Our youngest daughter, though, loves them. She wants to pick them up every time she sees one.

Which is why I knew she’d love this easy paper ladybug craft! Finally, a ladybug that won’t run away when she tries to hold it.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System

June 17, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Kids Books about the Solar System

We just posted a fun solar system unit study a couple of weeks back, so I thought I’d share some wonderful books about the solar system for kids of all ages!

I love videos and technology, but there is just nothing like turning the pages of a book with a child. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

So, when it comes to learning, I will always come back to books, which is why I love these solar system books for kids.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System for Kids

These solar system stories are filled with gorgeous illustrations, fun facts, and awesome activities that kids will love! They’d make a wonderful addition to a space or solar system unit.

Read on to see the full list. Hopefully you can find some new favorites to share with your students!

For more ways to learn about outer space, take a look at All About the Solar System – a printable science unit for early elementary grades!

Introduce these solar system books with a quick class discussion about space.

Ask your students: “Can anyone tell me how many planets are in our solar system?”

Let them respond and then follow up by talking about the view astronomers had for years – that there are nine planets that revolve around our sun. These nine planets were referred to as the “solar system”, because they followed an organized rotation around one sun.

Have your students repeat the name of each planet after you.

Solar System Books for Kids to Read

Then talk about how scientists have changed their view over the years. Some now say that Pluto does not qualify as a planet, because of its small size.

Others say that it is still a planet, but should be called a dwarf planet. Still others say that our solar system actually has 13 planets, including new dwarf planets that have been discovered.

Because there is so much still to discover about the solar system, we have a lot to learn!

Which is where these books can help. Choose a couple from the list below to share with your class!

Easy and Fun Outdoor Math Games for Kids

June 13, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Math is one of those topics that children either love or seem to struggle with a little bit.

It’s no different in our family. I have one child who seems to “get” math concepts right away, but for the others, it takes a little time. (And preferably a lot of movement.)

So that’s why I love using outdoor math games for kids to help my children practice some of their most difficult concepts.

With these outdoor math learning activities, kids get to practice their skills, move around, and even get a little messy. They’ll have so much fun they won’t even notice they’re learning!

Fun Outdoor Math Games for Kids

These fun math games would be perfect for outdoor play over summer break, particularly if you’re trying to avoid the summer slide before school resumes in the fall.

Want more ways to keep learning over the break? Don’t miss our list of 40 summer learning activities for kids!

3 DIY Outdoor Math Games for Kids

Sidewalk Chalk Math

What child doesn’t love drawing on the sidewalk with chalk? The chunkier the chalk and the brighter the colors, the better.

Instead of setting indoors doing math worksheets on plain old paper, why not take your little one outside and do your math on the sidewalk? Your child will love walking (or running) around to answer oversized math problems!

Beanbag Toss

Head outdoors with several beanbags and some plastic buckets. Place the plastic buckets on one end and have your child and the beanbags on the other.

Ask your child a math question or write one on the driveway with chalk and have them then toss the correct amount of beanbags into the plastic bucket.

For example: If the math problem is 2 + 3, they would then need to toss five beanbags into the bucket.

Counting Treasure Hunt

Setting up a treasure hunt for your child is a perfect way for them to get out and about in nature and have fun with math! Pick 10 different objects and place them around the yard.

Have your child find those objects and bring them back to you, counting as they go. Once they have found all ten items, it’s time for them to hide some objects from you!

Out of the 10 items, tell them to take three or four to hide. You can also practice subtraction by asking them how many objects are left afterwards.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Simple Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

June 10, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

A few years ago, we got to visit the Georgia Aquarium. It was incredible.

The kids gathered around each display to look at amazing sea creatures, from Beluga whales to otters.

Some of the animals that caught my eye, though, were the jellyfish. I had never seen them up close before and I’d only ever heard horror stories from childhood classmates who were stung by them at the beach.

I had no clue that jellyfish were so gorgeous. They are truly beautiful.

And now that summer is here (yay!), I wanted to make a new coffee filter craft for kids. So why not try a coffee filter jellyfish craft?

Cute and Easy Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft for Kids

This is a super easy and fun summer craft to share with little ones during the warm weather. It’d also make a perfect addition to an ocean or beach unit study!

Read on to get the full project instructions. And, for more fun with summer crafting, try our Coffee Filter Crab Craft as well!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Simple Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

To make this coffee filter jellyfish craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • White basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Crayons
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Ribbon

How to Make a Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

To get started, use the scissors to cut the coffee filter horizontally. You’ll want to cut about one-third of it off of the bottom.

Easy Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

Use a black crayon to draw the eyes and smiley mouth on the jellyfish.

Fun and Easy Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

Now, color the entire coffee filter with a bright color. You can use any color you like here, because jellyfish come in a huge variety of colors.

We went with red purple for a nice contrast to the blue of the construction paper.

After you finish coloring the coffee filter, use a glue stick to glue it near the center of the paper. Make sure the paper is laid vertically. You’ll need room at the bottom for the jellyfish tentacles.

Making an Easy Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft

Use the scissors to cut a few pieces of ribbon from the spool. We only cut five, but you can cut as many as you like.

Easy Coffee Filter Jellyfish Craft for Kids

Carefully lift the bottom of the coffee filter and lay each piece of ribbon underneath. Space them out so that they’re fairly evenly distributed.

Stick them to the paper with the glue stick and then press the coffee filter back on top to keep them in place.

If you want the tentacles to look a little curly, run each piece of ribbon against the open pair of scissors. You’ll see each ribbon start to curl afterwards. (Only an adult should perform this part to avoid cutting little fingers, even with child-safe scissors.)

Draw a few ocean waves at the top and the bottom and you’re done!

Plus, it’s fun to take outside and pretend to fly. Just hand one to your little one and watch them zoom around pretending to take off into space!

Making a Paper Rocket Craft

To make this simple paper rocket craft for kids, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Colored cardstock
  • Paper towel roll
  • Washable paint
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Hot glue gun

Paper Rocket Craft for Kids

To start, cut the paper towel roll into two pieces. One piece should be slightly longer than the other.

We’re making two paper roll rocket crafts out of one paper towel roll.

Fun Paper Roll Rocket Craft

Paint each piece of the paper towel roll. We used a yellow paint, but any color will do.

Let the paint dry completely.

Making a Paper Roll Rocket Craft

Trace the lid of a mason jar or cup twice onto a colored piece of cardstock. You will be making one cone-shaped top for each rocket.

Use scissors to cut out each circle. Afterward, cut one slit to the center on each circle.

Remember: if you want the kids to help with this part, use child-safe scissors that are safe for little fingers.

Easy Paper Roll Rocket Craft

Form each circle into a cone shape by pulling the two ends together. Use the hot glue gun to seal each cone closed.

NOTE: Use caution with working with hot glue around small children.

Fun and Easy Paper Roll Rocket Craft

Now cut four triangles about three to four inches wide from the colored cardstock. You’ll use two of these for each rocket.

Working from the top of each triangle, cut a slit from the point down, stopping just before the bottom of each triangle.

Paper Rocket Craft for Kids to Make

Carefully cut four slits onto the bottom of each painted tube. Make sure that each cut is directly across from the cut on the opposite side.

Slide one triangle up through two bottom slits. The triangle should be placed in two slits that are diagonal.

Then slide the second triangle through the other two slits. This triangle will crisscross the other, forming an X at the bottom of the rocket.

Super Easy Paper Roll Rocket Craft

Now cut six quarter-sized circles from the colored cardstock.

Use the hot glue gun to glue three circles onto each paper towel roll.

Simple Paper Rocket Craft

And we’re done! Look how bright and colorful these rocket crafts are!

Free Printable Flashcards: Solar System Flashcards

Get to know our galactic neighbors with these printable solar system flashcards! Perfect for a space unit!
Free Printable Flashcards: Solar System - Look! We're Learning!
Help kids learn about the members of our solar system with these printable solar system flashcards! These would be wonderful for a space unit study!

When was the last time you recited the order of the planets of the solar system?

It’s been a while, right? So when we started working on learning the solar system with Pooh recently, I had to do a little…ahem…refreshing myself on the topic.

In the last few years, scientists have decided that Pluto no longer qualifies as a planet. I take great umbrage at this opinion.

Free Printable Solar System Flashcards for Kids

Pluto has been a loyal planet to us for the past 80 years. Breaking up with it now just seems….wrong. Still, we must march along with the progress of science.

So, for those of you who could also use a refresher on the solar system, I decided to add a new entry to our free printable flashcards series: printable solar system flashcards!

Printable Solar System Card Set

These would be excellent for early science centers or for use with an outer space unit.

Read on to see how to get your set for free!

And, for more about the solar system, don’t miss our All About the Solar System Printable Science Lesson and our roundup of beautiful Solar System Books for Kids!

This set of solar system flashcards includes 12 cards:

  • Sun
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Moon
  • Mars
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Neptune
  • Uranus
  • Pluto (still included if you want to discuss it as a dwarf planet)
  • and Star
Free Solar System Flashcards for Kids

The goal is for kids to learn, not only the planets, but the other important members of the solar system and where they are located.

Printable Solar System Flashcards

Plus, there is a full blackline set available! These would be awesome for in-class coloring activities.

Simple Hands-On Solar System Learning Activity

Instead of just making the printable solar system flashcards, I wanted to show you a simple, hands-on activity you can use them to do.

If you have active students or if you just want to add a little spice to your lesson, try this to help kids learn the order of the planets!

(Note: These pictures show an earlier version of the flashcards, but the activity works with the new set too.)

Solar System Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

You’ll need the printed flashcard set, some masking tape, nine strands of yarn, and a flat surface.

Use masking tape to secure each end of each strand to the surface.

Try to get the yarn into a rough arc shape. We’re going for planetary orbit lines.

Printable Planets of the Solar System Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

Then, have the kids lay out the planet cards in the right order, starting with the sun and progressing outward.

My son was having some trouble recalling the planet order, so we used the mnemonic device: My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos.

My – Mercury

Very – Venus

Eager – Earth

Mother – Mars

Just – Jupiter

Served – Saturn

Us – Uranus

Nachos – Neptune

*If you include Pluto, you can add Playfully – Pluto.*

It’s weird, but it works! Especially since I always seem to get Jupiter and Saturn backwards.

Printable Solar System Planet Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

Naturally, we had to add the sun and moon in there too.

Be sure to remind your students that the sun and moon are NOT planets. I may have forgotten to make this distinction…lol.

Solar System Printable Flashcards - Look! We're Learning!

All done! And in order, at that!

That’s the face of a kid who knows he’s accomplished something.

Solar System Flashcards Printable Pack - Look! We're Learning!

When we finished labeling them all in order, we had he recite them in order on his own. Once he remembered My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos, he was good.

This was definitely a fun way to learn about the planets of the solar system!

Schedule a fun summer with your family this year with this printable family summer bucket list! Great for keeping the kids entertained during break!

Summer Fun! Printable Family Summer Bucket List

May 16, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Summertime is my very favorite time of year. I think I have that in common with most school kids.

My kids always enjoyed summer break, too. Even though we’ve been homeschoolers for many years, we’ve always taken a break over the summer and this year will be no different.

Still, though, I never wanted my kids to just sit around being bored through June and July.

So I thought it would be good to share a printable family summer bucket list to give you some ideas for how to keep the kids (and yourself) entertained over the summer!

Printable Family Bucket List for Summer

This is such a simple way to add fun to your summer without overloading everyone’s schedule. Plus, you can choose as many or as few activities as you like.

Read on to get your copy free! And, for more ways to have fun this summer, take a look at our list of 60 outdoor play ideas to share with the kids!

Summer Fun! Printable Family Summer Bucket List

One of my biggest regrets about childhood is that I didn’t spend much time outside. I’m a child of the 80s, so I was indoors watching television a lot.

Looking back, I think I would have liked being outside more if I’d had a better idea of what to do while I was out there.

Printable Family Summer Bucket List

So, if you’re like me and a bit…unsure about how to help the kids get outside more, this family summer bucket list is a perfect help!

Printable Summer Bucket List for Families

There are sixty-five different bucket list ideas here for kids, including ways to have fun outside, places to visit over the summer, crafts to make, and ways to help others.

Some of the ideas include:

  • Going on a stargazing hike
  • Having a water balloon fight
  • Reading to others at a local nursing home
  • Going to the zoo
  • And many more!

How to Complete Your Family Summer Bucket List

So, once you have your family summer bucket list, how do you actually get around to doing the items on it?

Here’s an idea that may help.

Simple and Fun Family Summer Bucket List

Enlist your kids to make sure you actually choose one activity a day. Since there are 65 different ideas, you can try one each day and fill up the entire summer!

Laminate the bucket list and hang it on the refrigerator. As you try each one, check it off with a dry erase marker.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, let the kids plan your week by choosing seven activities themselves. They’ll be so excited to complete all the activities!

As a bonus, plan a special treat for when you’ve tried each item on your summer bucket list. You might even make some special family memories along the way!

Hi everyone! I’m thrilled to share a new set of free printable flashcards with you (finally!).

They go through the most amazing transformation known to scientists: the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly. Any creature that can do something like that is amazing in my book.

Share a fun and easy summer craft with the kids when you make this easy coffee filter crab craft! Perfect for summer afternoon crafting!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Crab Craft

May 6, 2019 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Summer is almost here! And that means only one thing: It’s time to head back to the beach.

The beach is basically my second home. If I could spend the rest of my life on the sand, I’d be happy.

I even love beach creatures, like crabs. They’re very closely related to spiders, so they’re kind of like sandy arachnids, but I’m willing to overlook that.

As part of our series of coffee filter crafts for kids, I thought it would be fun to make a super easy coffee filter crab craft!

Simple and Fun Coffee Filter Crab Craft for Kids

This is a perfect summer craft for little hands! You’ll only need a few supplies and a few minutes to make it.

If you like this easy summer craft, don’t miss our roundup of 40 simple summer crafts for kids! They’re wonderful for filling up those long summer afternoons!

Share a fun and easy summer craft with the kids when you make this easy coffee filter crab craft! Perfect for summer afternoon crafting!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Crab Craft

To make this easy coffee filter crab craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • White basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Child-safe scissors

Easy Coffee Filter Crab Craft

The good thing about making this easy crab craft is that you really only need about 10 or 15 minutes. So it’s perfect for little ones, who tend to have rather short attention spans.

Plus, you probably already have the supplies in your home!

Simple Coffee Filter Crab Craft

Start by outlining the crab’s eyes with black crayon. Then color the rest of the coffee filter bright orange. I actually used a red orange crayon here, but either red or orange would work as well.

Then add a simple smile and use a glue stick to glue the filter onto a piece of construction paper. Glue sticks work best with coffee filters, because they don’t leak through the filter.

Coffee Filter Crab Craft

Use the red orange crayon to add four legs on each side of the crab. Draw the top legs so that they are reaching upward.

Finally, use scissors to cut out circles from orange construction paper. Just cut out a small triangle to make the crab claws and glue them onto the end of the top legs.

Simple Coffee Filter Crab Craft for Kids

Remember: If the kids are cutting out the circles, be sure they’re using child-safe scissors. They do the job just as well and you won’t have to worry about little hands getting hurt.

Plus, we usually end up at the beach, which is my true birthplace, no matter what my birth certificate says.

So, in the spirit of summer, I thought I’d share a set of free printable flashcards counting to ten cards with beach balls!

Phonics Fun! Printable Phonics Flashcards for Kids

April 22, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Phonics are kind of a controversial topic in education these days. Some kids learn to read without ever practicing phonics, but some benefit by learning to master common phonics skills.

Personally, I’m for whatever helps a child learn to read.

Some of my kids took to reading right away. Others learned beginning sounds, digraphs, and suffixes before learning to read fluently.

So I thought these printable phonics flashcards might be useful to some of you as well!

Printable Phonics Flashcards for Early Readers

These would be excellent for literacy centers, phonics reviews, and even “I Have, Who Has?” games! Plus, you can print them once and then use them over and over again.

These printable racecar scissor skills worksheets are perfect fine motor practice for little racing fans!
These racecar scissor skills printables are so much fun for helping little ones learn to use scissors!

Little Miss has been racing her way through all of her preschool lessons. She absolutely cannot wait for kindergarten this fall.

Remember when you were young enough to actually be excited about doing harder work like the “big kids”? Yeah, I don’t either.

Anyway, she’s mastered her letters, numbers, shapes, and counting, so we’ve been working on a lot of fine motor skills. And that includes learning how to use scissors.

Printable Racecar Cutting Practice Worksheets

With my oldest child, I put off scissor skills for way too long, so this time around, we got started with safety scissors as soon as possible. She loves it!

Using Racecar Scissor Skills Printables with Preschoolers

All you need to do is find a willing preschooler who’s ready to try these out!

Free Racecar Scissor Skills Printables

Since this wasn’t Piglet’s first time using scissors, she didn’t need a lot of assistance, especially with the straight lined worksheet.

Racecar Scissor Skills Printables for Kids

But I did keep an eye on her – just to be safe.

Racecar Scissor Skills Printables

The wavy lines and curved lines gave her a little trouble (mostly because she didn’t want to cut the racecars themselves), but once she got the hang of it, it was full steam ahead!
