This fun solar system-themed edible playdough is a perfect sensory activity for summer!

DIY Solar System Edible Playdough

May 21, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you ever tried making your own playdough? We’ve done it several times and it’s always a big hit with our kids.

But, if you really want to take it to the next level, edible playdough is where it’s at. Remember always thinking that playdough looked good and then being disappointed when you tried to taste it (whenever your mom wasn’t looking, that is)? Edible playdough actually does taste amazing.

Fun and Easy Solar System Edible Playdough Recipe

So for a fun astronomy sensory play activity, I thought my kids would love some DIY Solar System Edible Playdough! This is so simple and fun to make! And it’s a sweet treat for the kids to enjoy too. (Just don’t let them eat too much or they’ll be bouncing off the ceiling.) Read on to get the recipe for yourself!

Want more fun sensory play? Don’t miss our simple DIY flubber kids can make!

This fun solar system-themed edible playdough is a perfect sensory activity for summer!

Solar System Edible Playdough

Basically, you’re going to make colored sugar frosting. Which is why the kids shouldn’t eat too much, you know?

Solar System Edible Playdough Ingredients

You can use any color of frosting you like, but the Funfetti brand has some awesome brightly colored versions that will give you a lovely color for each planet.

To make Earth and moon playdough, we went with blue frosting (for Earth) and yellow frosting (for the moon).

Solar System Edible Play Dough

Mix the two together to get the right consistency. You want it squishy, but still kind of firm.

DIY Edible Solar System Playdough

Turn your mixture onto a wooden surface.

Finished Earth Edible Playdough

Let the kids mix it up with their little fingers!

Finished Moon Edible Playdough

This is great gross motor skill practice, by the way.

Solar System Edible Playdough Recipe

All you need now are two empty jars with lids (baby food jars are perfect), colored ribbon, and some cute solar system stickers!

Making Solar System Edible Playdough

Fill each jar with one color of the playdough.

Easy Solar System Edible Playdough for Kids

And add the lids!

These particular stickers came from a brick-and-mortar store, but if you want to get something solar system-themed online, try these solar system planet stickers. I actually think those are even better, because you can choose from specific planets with the planet names.

And with the different frosting colors, you could make a batch for every planet in the solar system!

These would make awesome party favors, but your kids will also love making up their own solar system edible playdough to play with (and taste!).

Preschool Playdough Mats: Ladybug Playdough Mats

March 19, 2018 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Ladybug Preschool Playdough Mats
These printable ladybug playdough mats are so fun for preschool motor skill practice!

Preschoolers (and adults, for that matter) love playing with playdough! And, by the way, when you need something to occupy your kids quietly, playdough is a wonderful resource. It’s quiet, it’s easy to clean up, and it’s affordable.

On a personal note – I just want to know: Are my kids the only ones who mix up ALL the playdough colors? I really struggled to find some dough that looked decent for this post and it was tough! Out of the 20 cans of playdough in our house, I found one that was actually the color on the lid. One. Someone please tell me this is normal.

Ladybug Playdough Mats

Even though kids like to use playdough to make all kinds of wacky colors, playdough can be much more than a time-filler for kids. It can be used to reinforce fine motor skill development, to encourage literacy, and to provide some much-needed sensory input.

So, I wanted to add a few more preschool playdough mats with a fun spring theme: ladybug playdough mats! These are awesome for toddlers and preschoolers who are learning about spring and how to recognize circles!

Winter is not my favorite season, but I absolutely love the beauty of snowflakes. Since we don’t see snow often in the South, a snowfall is still a big event down here.

In fact, we got a steady snowfall for a day last month and the kids just sat in the front of the living room window watching. It was basically our Super Bowl. 🙂

One of the most incredible things about snowflakes is that, as far as scientists can tell, no two snowflakes are alike! So it’s really difficult to find two similar snowflakes in nature.

But these snowflake preschool matching worksheets let kids find pairs of similar snowflakes in no time!

DIY Flubber Sensory Activity for Kids

My kids, like most children, love to play with playdough. So we’ve done a LOT of playdough activities for kids over the years. But for a new sensory experience, we decided to make something different: DIY flubber!

And it turned out really, really well. In fact, it worked out so perfectly that I…uh…played with it too. I regret nothing. 🙂

Simple DIY Flubber for Kids

Read on to see how we made flubber using just a few household ingredients! And if you like this simple activity, check out our list of super easy preschool crafts you can make in just 10 minutes!

This easy DIY flubber recipe is one of our favorite sensory play activities!

Easy DIY Flubber for Kids!

We decided to try out a very popular recipe for making flubber. If you’re not familiar with flubber, it also goes by the names “slime” and “gak”. It’s pretty much a stiff kind of “Magic Muck“, which we made a while back. But it’s very solid, so it’s easy to clean up after. Win!

The project was originally shared from Live Craft Eat and it turned out to be a great recipe for DIY flubber! It took about five minutes.

You’ll just need a few ingredients: (Affiliate links provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Liquid glue
  • Borax powder
  • Food coloring
  • Water

Making DIY Flubber for Kids

The kids were fascinated at the various textures of the flubber. It felt slippery initially, but then it turned rubbery the more we used it.

Easy DIY Flubber

We could even make handprints with it!

Playing with Homemade Flubber

We also found that when we stretched the flubber out and then let it sit on the table for a while, it returned to a single flat puddle on its own.

Easy DIY Flubber for Kids

It even breaks cleanly when you pull it, but it slowly returns to a flat blob in time.

Simple DIY Flubber for Kids to Make

But if you pick it up, it will run through your fingers! Super, super cool.

If you prefer to make DIY flubber without Borax, I found this great Borax-free flubber recipe from Little Bins for Little Hands. Works just as well! 😉

November 6, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When you take on the responsibility of teaching toddlers and preschoolers at home or in the classroom, it can be a challenge to come up with new activities that will hold their attention.

We’ve gotten to homeschool four little ones in our homeschooling journey and each one of them has been different.

They’ve had different interests, different learning styles, and very different personalities.

So the activities that worked for one preschooler didn’t necessarily work for the next or the next or the one after that!

And that’s why it’s good to have a huge variety of preschool activities that you can go to at anytime.

Read below to get some inspiration from this list of 100(!) fun learning activities for preschoolers!

Make the most of autumn learning for your little one with these fall preschool worksheets!

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

October 5, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Fall is such a wonderful time to be a preschooler. I vividly remember my “nursery school” (we didn’t have preschool back then) and going there in the fall was so fun. We read fun books, we ate fall snacks (apples, of course), and the air was crisp and I just loved it.

These days, kids receive a structured education earlier than they used to, but we can certainly make it fun! And that’s why I’ve rounded up some new preschool worksheets: fall preschool worksheets! These are perfect for simple, age-appropriate autumn learning that kids will love!

Printable Fall Preschool Worksheets

Make the most of autumn learning for your little one with these fall preschool worksheets!

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

A quick note here: There’s a lot of backlash against using worksheets in preschool these days. And I can understand why that’s the case. Giving four-year-olds paperwork to fill out all day doesn’t sound like much of a childhood.

In our family, we don’t use worksheets to that extent. We use them as a minimal part of our learning day. And my four-year-old loves them! She also loves to play fun learning games, read great preschool stories, and make fun preschool crafts. We try to keep it diverse. 🙂

And now – for the fall preschool worksheets you can add to your learning day too!

Printable Counting to 100 Flashcards

June 13, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Remember the Count on Sesame Street? I can’t exactly recall when I learned to count, but I like to think that he played a large role in my mastering that skill. I still say “One, ha, ha, ha!” on occasion.

What I learned from the Count is that learning to count should be fun. When kids have fun learning, they pick up on concepts so much faster!

Which is why I wanted to make some printable counting to 100 flashcards to help Piglet learn to master counting from 1 to 100. And I’m sharing them with my readers today!

These are so fun for reviewing number skills with kids! Plus, they have a fun toy friends theme!

This set contains flashcards for each number from 1 to 100. 25 pages of four flashcards each!

Printable Counting to 100 Flashcards

For Piglet, we focused on learning the numbers in sequence. So I gave her the cards and let her practice putting them in sequence by tens.

Counting to 100 Flashcards for Preschoolers

First, we focused on listing the numbers from 1 to 10.

Preschool Counting to 100 Flashcards

After she got the hang of putting those numbers in order, we started working with other number groups.

Toy Friends Counting to 100 Flashcards

Finishing with the numbers from 90 to 100!

We made it all the way to 100!

You could also use these flashcards to have kids match up even and odd numbers. Or they’d be great for an “I Have, Who Has?” game!

For reviewing, just hole punch them and put them on an O ring. See if the kids can remember which number comes next!

Preschool Playdough Mats: Rainbow Playdough Mats

February 3, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Seasonal allergies aside, I absolutely adore spring. Next to fall, it’s my favorite season. Well, summer might be in the running also, which tells you how I feel about winter.

We don’t see rainbows that often in our area, but when we do, they are gorgeous. If I happen to see one while driving, I’ve been known to shout “Look, kids! A rainbow!”

They’re just as fascinating to me now as they were when I was a kid.

This product includes one color rainbow mat and one black and white mat, so it’s a great way to talk about colors with preschoolers as well!

Using a Rainbow Playdough Mat

Since these rainbow mats use several colors, kids can break out many colors of playdough to use together. That’s always fun.

Work on one color row at a time and make sure that kids can recognize and name each one before moving on.

Making a Rainbow Out of Playdough

This is also a good fine motor activity, because preschoolers can use their hands to form the playdough into ropes and then mold them to fit the mat pattern.

Once kids follow the color playdough mat pattern, they can recreate it on the black and white mat.

Or just come up with their own color scheme instead!

Free Winter Printables for Preschoolers

December 13, 2016 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Winter is a great time to get kids excited about learning! Especially when the weather is so awful no one wants to venture outside. 🙂

If you have older kids (like I do), it can be tough to keep your younger ones involved in your homeschooling lessons. Our preschooler always wants to be at the table with her older siblings during class, no matter what we’re learning about. I could be teaching organic chemistry and she’d want to be involved.

So I use a lot of preschool printables to keep her learning along with the older kids. If you enjoy using winter printables with your children, these free winter printables for preschoolers are a fun way to let your younger kids get involved!

100 of the Very Best Picture Books for Preschoolers

November 21, 2016 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I’ve been a parent for nearly 13 years and we have four children. So I can tell you that it’s easy to get into the “routine” of parenting – just kind of going from day to day trying to keep your head above the water.

But something happens when your last child begins preschool. Personally, that snapped me out of the routine mindset and into the “treasure every moment” way of thinking. The thought that this is my last child to teach at home was a real jolt.

Piglet started PreK this fall, so we’re officially teaching our very last preschooler. And, since she already has a good grasp on letters, numbers, colors, counting, and shapes, I want to spend a lot of her preschool year exploring wonderful children’s books.

So I thought I’d make an ultimate list of the very best picture books for preschoolers. There are 100 of the best children’s picture books on this list, including modern stories and classic picture books that preschool-aged kids will love to read! But be warned, parents: Expect to read a lot of these over and over again.

If you love these selections, don’t miss our preschool homeschool reading list for this year!
