March 15, 2022 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When it comes to insects, I’m a bit of a fraidy cat.

I don’t mind teaching my students about them and I realize the valuable role they play in our ecosystems.

I just don’t want them anywhere near me.

Except for butterflies and ladybugs. In fact, I can actually pick a ladybug up without being scared.

So I quite enjoyed putting together this list of fun ladybug books for kids!

When you’re ready to read a few of these with your class, start by finding out how much your students already know about ladybugs.

Ask:

  • Has anyone seen a ladybug?
  • What do ladybugs look like?
  • What do you think ladybugs eat?
  • Can ladybugs fly?

After you discuss ladybugs together, pick out a few answers your students have given and call back to them as you read.

If your students are unfamiliar with ladybugs, you may want to read a non-fiction book that gives basic ladybug facts. Once they have learned a bit about them, try a storybook or two featuring a ladybug character.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System

June 17, 2019 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Kids Books about the Solar System

We just posted a fun solar system unit study a couple of weeks back, so I thought I’d share some wonderful books about the solar system for kids of all ages!

I love videos and technology, but there is just nothing like turning the pages of a book with a child. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

So, when it comes to learning, I will always come back to books, which is why I love these solar system books for kids.

25 Awesome Books about the Solar System for Kids

These solar system stories are filled with gorgeous illustrations, fun facts, and awesome activities that kids will love! They’d make a wonderful addition to a space or solar system unit.

Read on to see the full list. Hopefully you can find some new favorites to share with your students!

For more ways to learn about outer space, take a look at All About the Solar System – a printable science unit for early elementary grades!

Share a trip into space with the kids when you read these amazing books about the solar system together! These would make perfect read alouds for a solar system unit!

Introduce these solar system books with a quick class discussion about space.

Ask your students: “Can anyone tell me how many planets are in our solar system?”

Let them respond and then follow up by talking about the view astronomers had for years – that there are nine planets that revolve around our sun. These nine planets were referred to as the “solar system”, because they followed an organized rotation around one sun.

Have your students repeat the name of each planet after you.

Solar System Books for Kids to Read

Then talk about how scientists have changed their view over the years. Some now say that Pluto does not qualify as a planet, because of its small size.

Others say that it is still a planet, but should be called a dwarf planet. Still others say that our solar system actually has 13 planets, including new dwarf planets that have been discovered.

Because there is so much still to discover about the solar system, we have a lot to learn!

Which is where these books can help. Choose a couple from the list below to share with your class!

As part of learning about history, we’ve read some wonderful black history books for kids over the years. Today I’m sharing some of the selections that I consider “must-read” books! If I missed any of your favorites, feel free to share your suggestions in the comments!

Minimalist Homeschooling: How to Declutter Books

July 12, 2016 by Selena Robinson 9 Comments

I never thought I’d ever utter this next sentence, but: I have too many books.

There. I said it.

That was tough.

If there was an organization for Book Collectors Anonymous, I’d be at my meeting every week.

I’ve always loved to read and, when my husband and I decided to homeschool our children, I was off and running to the bookstore. Books about homeschooling, books with homeschooling activities, classics I’d read as a child that I now wanted my kids to read, new children’s books that were written by promising authors, out-of-print books featuring wonderful hobbies I still wanted my kids to learn…you get the idea.

But after seven years of homeschooling, I realized that I just have way too many books. As part of my experience with minimalist homeschooling, I’m..gasp…getting rid of some of my books. If you’re ready to learn how to declutter books, here’s a look at how I’m doing it.

As part of my experience with minimalist homeschooling, I'm learning how to declutter books, no matter how much it hurts. Here's how!

Minimalist Homeschooling: How to Declutter Books

I’m going to borrow from the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up to explain how I decide it’s time for a book to leave my home. In that book (and, yes, I realize the irony of quoting a book about getting rid of books), the author says to touch each item in your home and ask yourself: “Does this spark joy?” If it doesn’t, out it goes.

For me, I look at a book and think “Do I really want to use this book for our homeschool or do I feel like I should use this book for our homeschool?” If it’s there just because I think I should use it, it heads out the door.

Books, Books, Books

Some homeschooling books are super, duper famous. And they are wonderful resources for many families. But, over time, I’ve realized that some of them are just not a good fit for us, especially since we’re homeschooling kids with ADHD. So there’s no point in keeping a homeschool library that won’t help with our specific educational goals.

“If a homeschooling book is in my closet just because I think I should use it, it heads out the door.”

Now, this is not to say that I won’t keep buying books. But buying them because I only think I need them or, worse, keeping them long after they’ve served their purpose, ends now.

So, what have I been doing instead of hoarding more and more books? Why, visiting my local library, of course! And there are so many great and trusted tips for homeschooling available online now, that I don’t really need as many homeschooling and education books as I did years ago.
