Printable Fall Reading Journal for Second Grade

August 6, 2018 by Selena Robinson 9 Comments

Free Fall Reading Journal for Second Grade

Reading is a huge part of our homeschooling experience. I’m a bookworm and nothing would make me happier than to raise four little bookworms of my own.

In second grade, one of the objectives is for children to learn to retell the main idea and details of a story. So I put together a printable reading journal for second grade with a cute fall theme! Read on to see how we used them and to get your own!

Get kids into reading and analyzing what they read with this printable fall reading journal!

These would be wonderful for introducing kids to book reports, since you can use them to help students identify author, story, setting, and character. But they’re also a nice introduction to creative writing!

By the way, be sure to check out our second grade reading list for some awesome children’s book recommendations!

This printable fall reading journal for kids is a simple way to help children analyze the stories they read!

Fall Themed Printable Reading Journal for Second Grade

In first grade, Pooh really grew in his independent reading. I want to make sure that he keeps reading for fun this year, but we also want to make sure that he understands what he reads and can explain it to others. Enter a reading journal!

To use these printables, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Pencil

Reading Journal Printable for Kids

On the cover page is a spot for kids to write their names on their journals.

Printable Fall Reading Journal for Kids

The journal includes one cover page and eight journal prompts: two to be used each week.

Fall Reading Journal Pages for Kids

The first prompt asks students to identify the title of the book, the author, the main character, the setting, the problem, and the resolution. Identifying problem and resolution are the stepping stones to analyzing plot.

Fall Printable Reading Journal

On the second prompt page, kids can express their opinions about what they’ve read by explaining what they liked and didn’t like about the story.

They can also flex their creative writing muscles by rewriting the story’s ending their own way.

Printable Reading Journal for Kids

Since there are four journal sets in the product, you can use this reading journal for an entire month.

Printable Kids Reading Journal

Simply print it three times to cover the entire fall season! If you use the journal each month for three months, kids will have read and analyzed 12 stories!

How to Use a Reading Journal for Second Grade

Here’s a look at the reading journal for second grade in action.

Fall Themed Reading Journal for Second Grade

For this activity, my second-grader decided to read The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food. One of my favorites from childhood, too. 🙂

Fall Themed Reading Journal for Second Grade

After reading the book, Pooh started working on his journal. Since we’re just beginning second grade, I don’t mind letting him look back at the story to recall details for his journal pages.

As the year progresses, though, my goal is for him to remember the details on his own. I think as we use the journals more often, he’ll get an idea of what to look for as he reads.

Simple Hibernation Unit Study for Elementary

November 9, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Hibernation Unit for Homeschoolers
Homeschool Unit Studies: Hibernation Unit - Look! We're Learning!
Share the fun hibernation crafts and activities in this hibernation unit study with the kids this winter!

We’re sharing another entry in our unit studies series today: a fun hibernation unit study!

Since winter time is fast approaching, I thought it would be fun to look at hibernation – how it works, what it is, and which animals do it every year.

Plus, it’s a great excuse for talking about sleep, which I desperately need more of these days. (I’m sure I’m not alone there.)

Printable Hibernation Unit Sorting Activity

Even if your students are always on the move and rarely want to sleep (like mine), learning about hibernation is just plain fun!

It’s really amazing to learn about mammals that sleep most of the winter season and what they do to prepare for that time of year.

Elementary Hibernation Sorting Activity

And that’s what this hibernation unit is designed to help kids do. Plus, there’s a printable hibernation sorting activity you can pick up for free!

Read on to see how to get your copy.

If you enjoy this unit, don’t miss our bears unit study and our list of children’s books about owls!

This hibernation unit study is full of fun hibernation crafts and activities for kids!

Hibernation Unit Study for Elementary Kids

When we put together a unit study, we typically include books, crafts, printables, and more.

While I don’t always use every resource, I like to have as many as I can. That way, we can always stretch a topic out if the kids are super interested.

In this hibernation unit, you’ll find books about hibernation, crafts and activities for learning about hibernation, and a printable hibernation animals sorting activity.

There’s also a super cool hibernation facts video that explains this process in kid-friendly terms.

What is Hibernation?

Watch this video and see if students can answer the questions that follow!

1. What is hibernation? (Answer: The long sleep that some animals take during winter.)
2. Why do animals hibernate? (Answer: Because the weather gets cold and food becomes hard to find.)
3. How do animals prepare for hibernation? (Answer: As winter gets closer, they eat a lot of food to store fat that will keep them alive during winter.)
4. Why do some animals store food before winter? (Answer: These animals wake up from their hibernation to eat a little.)
5. Name a few animals that hibernate. (Answer: Bats, snakes, bears, hedgehogs, ground squirrels, groundhogs, and marmots)
6. Where do animals hibernate? (Answer: Wherever they feel safe from predators. Some hibernate in caves and some hibernate under the ground.)
7. What is the difference between sleep and hibernation? (Answer: During hibernation, the animal’s body temperature drops and its heart rate slows down. These things don’t happen during regular sleep.)
8. What is it called when animals hibernate during summer? (Answer: Aestivation)

These hibernation books for kids are awesome for studying how animals prepare for winter!

This fun hibernation sorting activity is a great way to teach students about animals that hibernate!

Which Animals Hibernate? Sorting Activity

Once we learn about what hibernation is, it’s natural for students to wonder which animals hibernate and which animals don’t hibernate.

Teach them about some of the species that do with this free printable animal sorting activity!

Printable Hibernation Unit Sorting Activity for Kids

This is a very simple resource to use for teaching hibernation in early grades.

Students can cut out the animal picture cards and then paste them into the correct column.

We’ve had fun studying about nocturnal animals and one of those animals is…the owl! There are owls here in Georgia, but we hardly ever see them because they’re up when we’re asleep. 🙂

Since we’ve been talking about animals that are night “owls” (get it?), I rounded up some beautiful owl books for kids that we can share together. If you’re studying owls this fall, check out these storybooks and nonfiction books for some awesome owl facts!

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

October 5, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Fall is such a wonderful time to be a preschooler. I vividly remember my “nursery school” (we didn’t have preschool back then) and going there in the fall was so fun. We read fun books, we ate fall snacks (apples, of course), and the air was crisp and I just loved it.

These days, kids receive a structured education earlier than they used to, but we can certainly make it fun! And that’s why I’ve rounded up some new preschool worksheets: fall preschool worksheets! These are perfect for simple, age-appropriate autumn learning that kids will love!

If you like this list, be sure to check out our collection of fun preschool worksheets and activities you can use with your kids! We’re adding more all the time!

Make the most of autumn learning for your little one with these fall preschool worksheets!

Preschool Worksheets: Fall Preschool Worksheets

A quick note here: There’s a lot of backlash against using worksheets in preschool these days. And I can understand why that’s the case. Giving four-year-olds paperwork to fill out all day doesn’t sound like much of a childhood.

In our family, we don’t use worksheets to that extent. We use them as a minimal part of our learning day. And my four-year-old loves them! She also loves to play fun learning games, read great preschool stories, and make fun preschool crafts. We try to keep it diverse. 🙂

And now – for the fall preschool worksheets you can add to your learning day too!

Free Homeschool Unit Studies: Fall Leaves

Once the air starts to turn crisp, we know to watch for leaves to start changing color and falling. Down here in the South, this actually happens about a month after fall officially begins. But that doesn’t matter. I start getting into the fall spirit around September 1.

To help our kids learn more about this time of year, we put together a fun fall leaves unit study – one of our easy homeschool unit studies that you can use to discuss themes with your kids! Below you’ll find fall leaf books, leaf arts and crafts for kids, and leaf printables and activities that will be fun to use with your children!

If you enjoy this unit, don’t miss some of our other fall activities, including our leaf identification flashcards and our easy coffee filter apple craft!

Why Do Trees Shed Their Leaves?

Watch the following video to find out why leaves fall off trees during autumn. See if the kids can answer the questions below afterward.

1. What is photosynthesis? (Answer: The process plants use to turn light, water, and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen.)

2. What is chlorophyll? (Answer: A colored pigment that plays a role in the process of photosynthesis.)

3. What are carotenoids? (Answer: Yellow and orange pigments that provide color to some plants)

4. What are anthocyanins? (Answer: The red and purple pigments that provide color to some plants)

5. Why do plants have more chlorophyll than other pigments? (Answer: Because chlorophyll is involved in photosynthesis, the plant’s primary job.)

6. Why do trees need less chlorophyll during winter months? (Answer: Because they spend less of their energy doing the word of photosynthesis during these months.)

7. Why do leaves fall off of trees? (Answer: Trees form a thin layer of weak cells near the base of the leaves. In addition, trees form another layer of cells at the base that gradually pushes the leaves away.)

So leaves aren’t just falling off of trees. They’re being nudged off by the trees themselves. Neat!

50 Fall Crafts for Kids

August 22, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

There’s just something about autumn that makes me feel like crafting. (And I’m not the craftiest mom on Earth. Not by a long shot.)

Still, the cool air and the crisp mornings inspire me to share more art projects with the kids. Since I’m a little on the craft-challenged side, I prefer to try simple craft ideas whenever I can. And that’s why I love this list of easy fall crafts for kids! There are 50 here to choose from and they’re all really, really simple.

You won’t need to buy any special equipment or crafting supplies you’ll never use again. Even better, they only take a few minutes to make!

If you make some of these this autumn, I’d love to hear how the kids liked them! And don’t forget to check out our list of cozy fall stories to share during storytime this autumn!
