Supplemental Homeschool Programs That Make Teaching Easier

August 11, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When you’re teaching kids at home, it’s perfectly normal to start out full of enthusiasm…only for that initial excitement to fade and then drop off a cliff a few weeks later. So if you’ve been feeling like that, you’re not alone!

We’ve been learning at home for the past nine years and I too have experienced that sharp drop-off in homeschooling enthusiasm. It wasn’t until the last couple of years that I realized – it was mostly my fault.

It’s a big job to teach kids at home (and we have four – each at a different grade level), so by expecting myself to do ALL the educating, I was setting myself up for homeschool burnout. And it kept happening year after year after year.

Then I caved and started looking into some online homeschool programs that would help to enrich our lessons and things got so much better! So, if you’re feeling stretched to the limit, take a look at these supplemental homeschool programs that make teaching easier!

Disclosure: I was compensated for my time writing this article. All opinions are my own and I was not required to post a positive review.

Want to enrich your child's education? Try one of these online supplemental homeschool programs this year!

Five Supplemental Homeschool Programs That Make Teaching Easier

The Homeschool Buyers Co-op has an award-winning selection of all-inclusive homeschool curriculum, unit studies, supplements, and additional teaching resources. When you buy all-in-one or multi-subject resources from the co-op, you can save up to 93 percent!

At the co-op, you can browse several different kinds of Multi-subject Homeschool Curriculum, including five supplemental homeschool programs that are a great choice for families that learn at home.

IXL
IXL
We’re using IXL with our third-grader this year, so I’ll be sharing more about it in an upcoming post. This program includes practice in up to four subjects, such as math, language arts, science, and social studies. It’s available for grades K-12, so you can use it no matter what grade your child is in this year.

Brain Pop
BrainPop
Brain Pop has been a favorite of ours for years. My oldest daughter used the Junior version when she was in preschool and it was a big hit. There are video cartoons for each lesson, multiple video lessons in each subject, printable activities to complete, and online quizzes and games that reinforce what kids learn.

Brain Pop is available in four versions: Brain Pop Jr (for K-3), Brain Pop (for 3-12), Brain Pop Español + Francais (for native Spanish and French speakers), and Brain Pop ESL (for ESL learners).

Discovery Education
Discovery Education

If you use videos and web clips in your homeschool, then Discovery Education is a must-buy. This program offers parents access to hundreds of thousands of educational videos and clips that kids will love, including nature programming, math tutorials, and even audiobooks. Plus, there are additional enrichment resources, such as quizzes, assignments, and lesson plans.

Education City
Education City
Education City, designed for grades PK-6, provides practice in language arts, math, science, and computing – as well as math for Spanish speakers and ESL lessons. But this is more than just an after-school practice program.

Kids can also use it to take assessments and tests that will give parents a clearer idea of how their students are progressing. It’s a really useful way to find out what kids need to practice more and what they’ve already mastered.

Plato Learning
Plato

If you’re homeschooling from kindergarten through high school, then PLATO Learning is a program you’ll definitely want to consider. This comprehensive resource features subject lessons by grade levels (K-5, 5-8, and 9-12), so you can place your children in elementary, middle, or high school subjects as needed.

Have an advanced high school learner? You can sign up for the AP course package to get your student ready for college! You can purchase PLATO Learning on an annual or month-to-month basis.

How to Sign Up for Supplemental Homeschool Programs with Homeschool Buyers’ Co-Op

So, how can you take advantage of these and other supplemental homeschool programs? Take a look at all of the homeschool multi-subject curriculum programs available from the Homeschool Buyers’ Co-Op and then visit the program sign-up pages that interest you.

The co-op operates on a group buy policy, which means that as more parents sign up, the price can get lower and lower. Since all of the programs have unique purchase policies, it’s essential to read the terms and conditions before you purchase.

On a personal level, I will say that I have never been disappointed by a single purchase I’ve made from the Homeschool Buyers’ Co-op. Every single one has been a huge value to our homeschool. Every single one.

Find out more about the all-in-one and online homeschool programs you can score today and start making your teaching experience much, much easier!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Pig Craft

August 10, 2017 by Selena Robinson 5 Comments

Do you remember the first time you ever visited a farm? I went to a dairy farm on a class field trip in first grade and I was so disappointed. Cows are cool and all, but I wanted to see the pigs!

Kids are huge fans of pigs. I think it has something to do with the fact that they’re allowed to be as messy as they want to be. They don’t have to wipe their faces after eating. They don’t have to take a bath – at least not with soap and water. And they always look blissfully content. (Actually, I think I might envy them a little as an adult!)

So I wanted to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a coffee filter pig craft!

Simple Pig Coffee Filter Craft

This is a really fun and simple craft to make, so it’s perfect for younger children.

If the kids like this one, they might also enjoy our Coffee Filter Cat Craft or our Coffee Filter Moose Craft!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Pig Craft

To make this coffee filter pig craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper (I used brown)
  • Crayons
  • Glue stick
  • Pink marker (I like Mr. Sketch. Kids love the scents!)

Pig Coffee Filter Craft

One of the reasons this is a good craft for littles is because there’s no cutting involved. They can use the construction paper and coffee filter as is. Simple!

Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Start by drawing the pig’s eyes. Leave the whites uncolored so they’ll show up well later.

Easy Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Then color the entire filter pink and glue it onto the center of the construction paper.

Easy Pig Coffee Filter Craft

Draw an oval nose with two black slits. I used a brown crayon to lightly draw the oval (just to make sure the shape was right) and then traced over it with a black crayon.

Simple Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Give the pig a smile. Pigs are happy!

Making a Coffee Filter Pig Craft

At the top corners, use a black crayon to outline the ears. Use the pink marker to color them in. (The pink crayon doesn’t really show up on brown construction paper.)

Simple Pig Craft for Kids

Add a few polka-dots and you’re done!

“That’s all, folks!”

Okay, that was really corny.

Life of Fred Math Books for Homeschool

August 7, 2017 by Selena Robinson 222 Comments

When we start a new homeschool year, I’m always interested to see how my kids respond to the math curriculum I choose. Since we’re teaching kids with ADHD, I try to use various kinds of curriculum to see what works best for their attention spans and their difficulties with concentration.

So when I first discovered Life of Fred, I was thrilled. My oldest daughter, who has ADD, is a voracious reader. But she is NOT a fan of math.

Which is just fine because Life of Fred is NOT a set of math textbooks. If it was, she would have lost interest long ago. But she has loved these books and the concepts she’s learned as a result and that’s why we’ve kept them in rotation during the school year, even as she’s moved on to higher grades.

Read on to find out about the Life of Fred math books available for homeschool students. Plus, enter to win five Life of Fred math books yourself!

Thinking of Life of Fred math books for homeschool? Take a look at the selections!

Life of Fred Math Books for Homeschool

This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.

Life of Fred is a series of storybooks about Fred, an unusual five-year-old. In fact, he’s the youngest professor ever in the history of Kittens University.

The stories tell us about what happens during Fred’s day-to-day life. In the first book, Fred wakes up in the morning and gets out of his sleeping bag (located in his office at Kittens University) and reads the clock to tell what time it is.

As the books go on, Fred’s days become more complex as he goes jogging, studies constellations, learns to read music, and even tries to assemble a bicycle he orders through the mail. All the while, mathematical concepts are introduced and practiced without kids really even noticing. (They’re far too interested in what happens to Fred.)

The books are separated by grade level, beginning with the Life of Fred Elementary Series, which includes the following four books:

Life of Fred Apples

Life of Fred Apples

Life of Fred Butterflies

Life of Fred Butterflies

Life of Fred Cats

Life of Fred Cats

Life of Fred Dogs

Life of Fred Dogs

These are described as elementary level books, because they focus on the basic operations of arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also introduce number theory, rounding, skip counting, shapes, and more.

For middle school-aged children, Life of Fred math books for homeschool include:

Life of Fred Decimals and Percents

Life of Fred Decimals and Percents

Life of Fred Fractions

Life of Fred Fractions

There’s also an Life of Fred Intermediate Series (for middle school) that includes the following books:

Life of Fred Kidneys

Life of Fred Kidneys

Life of Fred Liver

Life of Fred Liver

Life of Fred Mineshaft

Life of Fred Mineshaft

In the Intermediate Series, the books take a big leap forward and tackle more advanced math topics, such as geometry, finding averages, and even the Pythagorean Theorem. Like the Elementary Series, though, these books introduce the topics so gently kids won’t have a chance to feel overwhelmed.

Each chapter is only about six pages long (perfect for short attention spans!) and there are a few questions for kids to practice some of the concepts they learned in the chapter. There are also answer keys for each practice section. Plus, the books are written at grade-appropriate levels, so kids can read them on their own. It’s reading and mathematics all in one!

What to Take to Your First Blogging Conference

August 3, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Blogging is a pretty solitary occupation, isn’t it? We spend a lot of our time sitting at the computer by ourselves. Then we spend a lot of our time taking pictures and editing them – by ourselves. Then we spend a lot of time promoting this content across social media – also by ourselves.

Bloggers do get a lot of social interaction from fellow creators and partners online, but this profession is not at all like a traditional one, which means you can end up basically working on your own.

For a lot of bloggers, a blogging conference is the first time they can experience the synergy of interacting with like-minded entrepreneurs who just get it. They understand the work, the struggles, and the tips that can help push a website to the next level.

Business Cards for a Blogging Conference

And that’s why I’m so thrilled to be attending my very first blogging conference ever this fall! I’ll be going to FL Blog Con in Winter Park, Florida and to get ready I’m taking along some wonderfully cute business cards from Basic Invite!

But that’s not all I’m taking and I’m so glad that I have plenty of time to pack so that I won’t forget any blogging conference must-haves. If you’re new to blogging meet-ups (like me), here’s what to take along to your first blogging conference!

Disclosure: I received this product in exchange for this post and I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Heading to your first blogging conference Don't leave home without these essentials!

What to Take to Your First Blogging Conference

Think about all of the things you use for blogging. What comes to mind? You probably use your laptop, your phone, your camera, and, of course, your chargers.

Guess what?

You should probably bring them ALL with you. Which means you’re going to need a fairly good-sized bag.

Packing for a Blogging Conference

Like this one! I got this rolling mobile office bag about a year ago and it is a perfect size. It has space for a small laptop (like my Lenovo Yoga), my camera, and my other supplies. Plus, it rolls, which means no aching back!

But there’s one other thing you absolutely MUST bring with you to a blogging conference…

Getting Ready for a Blogging Conference

Business cards!

Why You Need Business Cards for Your First Blogging Conference

Bloggers work online so much that we can forget how to do good old-fashioned networking. And you can’t do that without a business card.

Using a business card gives you a great way to let content partners and brands know exactly who you are, what you do, and how to find your site.

Business Cards for a First Blogging Conference

Plus, business cards add a layer of professionalism to your occupation. They show you’re taking your job seriously.

I received a set of customized business cards from Basic Invite and they are so, so gorgeous! I can’t wait to hand them out at the conference!

How to Prepare for Your First Blogging Conference

When it was time to order my blogging business cards, my initial thought was “There’ll probably only be, like, five different designs I can choose from. Ho-hum.”

I was wrong. Basic Invite features a wide range of customizable business cards for all kinds of industries. The Vertical Color Block Business Cards are the ones that caught my eye. If you’re looking for an eye-grabbing business card, this is a great one. It’s a little unusual, but still very professional-looking.

What to Bring to Your First Blogging Conference

With Basic Invite, you can change almost everything about the card. Users can select:

  • The colors
  • The fonts
  • The amount of text
  • The placement of text

For example, I wanted my business card colors to mimic my blog colors (teal and gray), so I found bold colors in those same shades. Since Basic Invite is one of the few websites that features a nearly unlimited color selection, you can have a blast “trying on” the different colors and seeing how they look on your cards – right in the preview pane!

What to Do Before Your First Blogging Conference

I also wanted the text on my cards to reflect the grade levels addressed on my blog: Preschool through Grade 6. So a little playful, but also a little serious. And I think these fit that theme well!

And don’t worry, I’ve already put my business cards and my card holder in my bag. There’s no way I can forget them now!

If you’re heading out to your first blogging conference, check out the stationery options at Basic Invite. Besides the gorgeous business cards, they also have gobs of options for other occasions such as baby shower thank you cards and inexpensive birth announcements. Stop by today and start designing your own!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

August 1, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When the boys were younger, one of their favorite episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine was “James and the Red Balloon”. This was one of the episodes in the classic series. The one with the toy trains.

They used to say that they wanted to fly in a hot air balloon. And I’d say, “Yeah, maybe one day.”

Well, until then, I thought they’d like to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a fun hot air balloon craft! That way, they can get a tiny version of their flying-in-a-hot-air-balloon fix and I won’t have a heart attack worrying about them. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Easy Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

This was a really fun craft to make. Kids may need a little help shaping their balloons, but after that, they’re good to go!

Make this simple coffee filter hot air balloon craft with the kids for some easy crafting fun!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

To make this coffee filter hot air balloon craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • One piece of blue construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Kids’ safety scissors

Making a Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

To get started, use your hands to flatten out the coffee filter as best you can. Then decide what colors you’d like to use to color it.

Coloring a Hot Air Balloon Craft

I wanted to make a cheery balloon, so I went with yellow and red-violet for contrast. But the kids can use any colors they like.

Take your contrasting color and draw a design on the coffee filter.

Creating a Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

Then color it in.

Decorating a Hot Air Balloon Craft

Color the rest of the filter with your main color crayon.

Easy Hot Air Balloon Craft for Kids

Now it’s time to shape the balloon! Take the safety scissors and, starting from the bottom center, cut a modified funnel shape.

What you’re looking for is a small opening at the bottom that widens to the full dome shape at the top. It might take a few tries to get this right, but it’s okay. We’re just crafting here. 🙂 To make it easier, flip the filter over and trace this shape in pencil for the kids to cut out.

Simple Hot Air Balloon Craft

Now, use a brown crayon to draw the passenger basket hanging from the bottom.

Use a white crayon to add a few puffy white clouds in the sky and you’re done!

How to Simplify Your Routine with an Online Homeschool Lesson Planner

July 28, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

We’ve all been there. It’s the start of a brand new homeschool year and we start to experience a mixture of excitement…and dread.

I have always loved homeschooling my children, but as they’ve gotten older (and my responsibilities have increased), planning just isn’t as much fun as it used to be. When I first started homeschooling, I eagerly shopped for new paper planners and spent hours color coding them, decorating them, and binding them the way I wanted.

Now that I have four children to teach, though, I just don’t have the time to devote to planning by hand like I used to. Plus, I work now and I have a lot more to care for around the home – with four kids and all.

Checking a Printed Homeschool Planet Calendar

So I was so relieved that I’d get a chance to try an online homeschool lesson planner this year – Homeschool Planet from Homeschool Buyers Co-Op! And after using it, I can honestly say that it is a wonderful tool for simplifying my entire routine (both home and school).

Read on to see how we’re using Homeschool Planet and learn how you can score a free trial for your family!

Disclosure: I received access to this product in exchange for this post and I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review. This post contains affiliate links. See our Disclosure Policy for details.

Learn how to use an online homeschool lesson planner to make planning for the new homeschool year easier!

How an Online Homeschool Lesson Planner Works

So how does Homeschool Planet work? Well, the best way to learn is by signing up for the free trial. That way, you’ll get a first-hand look at all the features. But here’s a quick primer.

Homeschool Planet Assignment Tutorial

When you first access the program, you’ll get video tutorials that explain exactly how to use each feature of Homeschool Planet – everything from how to schedule assignments, how to plan lessons, and how to add calendar appointments for each member of the family.

Homeschool Planet Online Homeschool Lesson Planner

This is the monthly calendar view. On the left side, you can add as many family members as you need to the schedule. Plus, there are widgets on the right side and underneath the calendar. The program automatically adds the Daily Quote widget, the To Do List widget, and the Shopping List widget, among others. But you can adjust those and add others (we’ll talk about this in a bit).

As you can see, the default view has a pink and beige theme. But you can change it to one of several color themes until you find the one you like best.

Setting Up Homeschool Planet

Ahhhh…that theme is much better. I love green.

How to Simplify Your Routine with Homeschool Planet

Okay, so that’s how Homeschool Planet looks and those are some of its features. Now, how can it actually make lesson planning easier?

Homeschool Planet Class Adding

Here’s a look at how to schedule your child’s lesson assignments. Start by adding the classes they will be taking. For this session, I focused on my two youngest children.

They won’t begin classes until after Labor Day, so I’m still in the pre-planning stages. But I know they’ll be working with Math and Reading. I started by adding my youngest son’s math class.

Homeschool Planet Adding Weekly Assignments

Since I already have his textbook, I can schedule the first day of class and the last day of class, as well as the time of day for each session. I can also add his daily assignments to the schedule. Once I choose what pages of the textbook to cover each day, I can continue adding them for the entire month.

The other tabs allow me to make notes, mark grades, count the hours spent on each class, and list the resources I intend to use. So I can use Homeschool Planet to schedule lessons and track them as we go through the year.

Homeschool Planet Weekly Calendar View

Once you schedule your regular class days and times, they’ll appear on the weekly calendar like so. Each day shows the class name and the child who will be taking it at that time. Classes are color coded, so there’s no confusion about what to teach when.

Homeschool Planet Monthly Calendar View

After all of the assignments have been added, they’ll appear on the calendar as well. You can even check them off as you go!

Homeschool Planet Cleared To Do List Items

And speaking of checking things off, I can keep up with the progress of my To Do List. I actually got some stuff done as I was planning!

Homeschool Planet Reading List

As I said earlier, you can add more widgets below the calendar view. A couple I chose to add were Weather and Reading List. We are big reading list fans here and I typically assign one for each child each year, depending on their grade level.

For my youngest son, we’ll be reading several books and I can keep up with them in the Reading List widget. But I can choose each grade from the dropdown menu and take a look at the books I’ve assigned to each child right from the planner. Homeschool Planet is truly one-step planning – a perfect fit for busy homeschool moms.

Oh, and did I mention that you can also buy prepared lesson plans in the Homeschool Planet Marketplace? Just scroll down to find the curriculum you’re using and then browse to find a lesson plan that you want to use! It is basically no-prep lesson planning. Plus, you can even sign up for virtual field trips the kids can experience!

But… I Still Love Paper Planners!

“But”, you may object, “I still love my paper planner!” Which is fantastic! I still use a paper planner myself. But I just don’t love writing things in it as much I used to.

Using Homeschool Planet with Paper Planners

Homeschool Planet can help with that also! Once I finish inserting assignments into the calendar, I can use the Print option to print out the kids’ schedule for the entire month.

Printing Out Homeschool Planet Schedules

If you’re on a budget with printer ink, you can choose to print it in color or “economy” view. I prefer the color version, because I want the kids to know which color means which class. But you could easily print it in grayscale and then just highlight their classes as needed.

Looking at a Homeschool Planet Calendar

What I like about this digital and print versatility is that I can let the kids consult the schedule, no matter where they are in the house. If they’re at a computer, they can log in and view it that way. If they’re not, they can check the paper planner to get an idea of what’s coming up.

Using Homeschool Planet to Schedule Homeschool Lessons

He’s a little unsure about this whole calendar thing. But having all of his assignments in one place is going to be a HUGE help for both of us, especially since he has ADHD and often has trouble remembering what to do each day.

I will be hanging his calendar (along with my other children’s) on the memo board each month, so they can consult it on their own and get to work. Which makes my life so much easier!

Are you ready to get a look at Homeschool Planet? Stop by the Homeschool Buyers Co-Op and sign up for the free trial! You’ll get time to check out the program, try it for schedule and lesson planning, and see how you can use it to make your daily routine easier.

Trust me, it’s definitely worth your while.

What You Don’t Need to Homeschool

July 17, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We made the decision to homeschool before our first child was even born. (Since I’m a homeschooling graduate, it was a kind of a no-brainer.)

But I told myself that this homeschool was going to be the very best homeschool that ever homeschooled. I was going to teach my children everything they could possibly know. And I was going to be organized and cheerful every single day. A modern-day Mary Poppins, if you will.

Well, we’ve been learning at home for nine years and I have to admit I wasn’t any of those things, but my kids are still learning and thriving. So you don’t need to be Mary Poppins to homeschool. Turns out, though, that there are a lot of other things that really don’t matter on your homeschooling journey.

Take a look at this list to find out what you don’t need to homeschool.

Think you're behind on homeschool planning You're not. You don't need a lot to homeschool, even if you're a newbie!

What You Don’t Need to Homeschool

A school room.

As much as I would love to have an honest-to-goodness school room, we’ve been getting by without one for years and it’s been fine. Homeschooling without a school room has forced me to simplify our curriculum and books quite a bit, but that’s okay. I think I would have been more focused on keeping the school room organized than actually teaching school anyway.

If you do have a school room, that’s awesome! (Also, I kind of hate you.) But if you don’t, you can still homeschool!

A boxed curriculum.

When I was homeschooled, my mother used Calvert School, which I believe is still a great program. I remember getting the big box of school books and supplies and opening it excitedly. Like a giant educational present.

But we have never used a single boxed curriculum program with our kids. Not one. Why? We can’t afford it! With four kids, shelling out hundreds of dollars for a program has just been impossible. Despite that, we’ve still managed to homeschool our four kids for $250 or less a year. And they’re at grade level and doing fine.

A full schedule.

Remember going to public school? Class starts around 7:50 or so and it continues until the buses arrive at 2:30 (or 3:00 for upper grades). If you’ve been thinking you need to imitate that schedule in your homeschool, you don’t! I don’t know any homeschoolers who teach all day. In fact, if any of you meet a homeschooler who actually teaches class from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., I want to meet that parent and shake her hand.

Even public school teachers don’t actually teach for that long. Kids rotate to classes with different instructors, go outside for recess, have lunch, and spend at least 10 minutes out of every hour lining up for the bathroom.

The amount of actual time I spend teaching in our homeschool is about five hours per week. The rest of the time is spent supervising my kids as they work and practice concepts on their own, and then following up to see if they need help. Homeschooling doesn’t have to take all day or even all week.

Easy Art Lessons for Kids with Sparketh

July 13, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

I love, love, love the arts. Watching them, that is.

Honestly, I’m not awesome at painting or sculpting or drawing. And the idea of trying to teach those skills to my kids was downright intimidating to me, which caused me to put it off over and over again.

My kids, though, were excited to learn to draw, paint, sculpt, and everything else. And I didn’t want to keep holding them back just because I was unsure about how to get them started.

Using Sparketh Easy Art Lessons for Kids

That’s why I was so thrilled to get the opportunity to try the easy art lessons for kids from Sparketh! These totally online art courses offer complete video instructions for kids and teens (and anyone else really) and you don’t need any artistic experience at all to use it with your kids!

Read on to see how Sparketh Online Art Lessons can make it easy for even non-artistic parents – like me – to teach art at home!

Disclosure: I received access to this program in exchange for this post and I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Worried about how to teach art when you're not really artistic? Sparketh is a wonderful and easy art program for kids!

How Sparketh’s Easy Art Lessons for Kids Work

Sparketh was launched in July 2015 with online art courses. Since then, the course offerings have expanded to include tens of different lessons, including drawing and painting, in varying degrees of difficulty.

Sparketh Easy Art Lessons for Kids Categories

You can choose from Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Since we were using the program with our eight-year-old, we chose from the Beginner category. But I’m glad that he can move on to more advanced courses as his skills improve. That way, you don’t really “age out” of the curriculum.

One of the featured courses was the “Draw A Tree Frog” course. My guy is all about animals, so this was a natural fit for him.

Sparketh Easy Drawing Lessons for Kids

Since we are raising kids with attention span issues, I was concerned about my son’s ability to stay interested and engaged throughout an entire course. So it was a pleasant surprise to see that many of the courses are fairly short – 30 minutes or less.

Even better, Sparketh Online Art Lessons are separated into several videos, which makes it easy to stop and start the course as needed. I also loved that the specific supplies were listed upfront, so I could browse for a class that used materials I already knew we had at home.

Using Sparketh’s Easy Art Lessons for Kids to Learn to Draw

Our eight-year-old has been wanting to learn to draw for the longest. He practices drawing things on his own, but he’s been wanting more structured lessons.

Since his auditory processing skills are not as well developed as his visual processing skills, having an online art video lesson that he could pause, rewind, and resume as needed was a wonderful help. Any time he was uncertain about what to do, he could just go back, watch it again, and gain more confidence.

As he learned in the course, the best way to begin a drawing is by sketching lightly.

Then you outline the finished sketch in ink pen and erase any unnecessary pencil marks.

Then – and only then – it’s time to add color. That was a critical step he’d been missing. Doing the foundation work early on helped him create a project he was proud of before finalizing it.

He really enjoyed using several different marker colors to make his tree frog look as realistic as possible.

I thought it was fantastic that Sparketh Online Art Lessons actually show the entire process of creating the work from start to finish. It made the lesson much more accessible for newbies. Going in, my son already felt that he could do the work right along with the artist.

Finally, he added a few finishing touches.

This is definitely going on the wall. And it was his very first lesson! I’m looking forward to seeing how much he progresses as he works through the different Sparketh Online Art Lessons.

Start by flattening out one white coffee filter.

Then use a crayon to color the entire filter bright pink.

Making a Coffee Filter Cupcake

Cut about 1/3 of the filter off using child-safe scissors. Make a scalloped edge to resemble the cupcake “frosting”.

Now glue the “cupcake top” in the center of a piece of construction paper. Try to place it towards the top to leave room for the cake bottom.

Now use a brown crayon to draw an inverted triangle to form the cake. Then color it in. (Afterward, I went over the brown with a dark brown colored pencil – just to make it look more like a browned cake.)

Then use a purple colored pencil to draw a few sprinkles on top of the cupcake!
