When Your ADHD Child Worries

July 4, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Until I was an adult, I had no idea what the symptoms of ADHD were, much less that I was living with it myself. But as I began exploring the symptoms, I found out that excessive worrying is one of the hallmark symptoms of this disorder.

As our children grow, we’ve noticed that some of them are what I would call “physically anxious”. For example, our hyper child actually becomes irritated when he has to sit down for long periods of time. But others are “emotionally anxious”. One of our boys has low energy and can be sluggish, but inside he’s a boiling kettle of emotions, including lots and lots of worries.

What can you do when your ADHD child worries? How can you help them manage these big emotions while they’re still small? Read on to find some tips that are working for us and to pick up a free resource your kids can use to process emotions themselves!

If you enjoy this post, don’t miss these pointers for how to show love to a defiant child too!

Does your child with ADHD worry a lot I have one who lives with constant anxiety. Here are a few ways to help kids with ADHD manage their fears.

When Your ADHD Child Worries

Comfort them.

First, try to comfort your child. No one can think clearly when they’re upset, especially not a child. Let him or her know that you are there and ready to help. But make sure that the way you comfort them is geared toward that specific child.

One thing that works with my hyper child is physical touch. If I hug him or bring him close, he calms down quite a bit. For my emotionally anxious child, holding his hand seems to work better. He doesn’t respond as well to hugging. If your child doesn’t respond to physical touch at all, just sit nearby and say “I’m here to help” or something similar.

Respect them.

It’s important that we make sure our children feel that we value their emotions. If we just hug them or hold their hands and “pooh-pooh” their feelings, we’ll seem patronizing. But when we respect our children’s emotions, we model that behavior for them. They will learn to stop and give their feelings attention, rather than ignoring them or pretending they don’t exist.

Follow up physical touch or verbal reassurance with active listening. Sit down near your child, give him or her direct eye contact, and then listen to their feelings. Be sure to offer feedback that shows you are taking an interest in their expressions.

The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks eBook

Guide them.

Once your child expresses his or her worries, show them how to process them and go forward. For example, one of my children worries constantly about how he is viewed by others. He has actually let that fear stop him from speaking up about something he didn’t want to do, which shows that he’s especially susceptible to peer pressure.

To help, we talk with him about his feelings privately – away from his siblings. We’ve also found that helping him brainstorm how to talk about his fears has given him a lot more freedom to express himself to us.

We also work with him to explore his likes and dislikes, so that he can become more vocal about expressing his interests without fear of rejection. It’s helped him to stabilize his emotions quite a bit.

Since helping our kids to express their worries has helped us, I thought you’d like to try this free worry journal with your kids! It’s called “My Little Book of Big Worries” and it’s for helping anxious kids to process their feelings and how they can talk about them.

The Little Big Worry Book

Use this printable feelings journal for kids to help your children write down their big worries in a pocket-sized printable book! Children can use this journal to write down what makes them feel sad, anxious, or worried and brainstorm how to express these feelings to their moms.

Here’s a quick look at how to put this printable mini-book together:

The Little Big Worry Book for Kids

Print both pages.

Feelings Journal for Kids

Take the first page (which contains the front and back covers) and fold it in half horizontally. This is the front and back cover half.

Worry Book for Kids

This is the inside page half.

Worry Journal for Kids

Fold the first page in half horizontally again to form a small book.

Then fold the second page in half horizontally also and then place it inside the first “book”. You should end up with an eight-page book. Add a few staples along the front edge to secure it.

The assembled book should look like this inside:

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Emoji Crafts

June 20, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Emojis are everywhere these days! They’re on our phones, in our emails, and even on Facebook! So for our newest set of coffee filter crafts, I thought we’d add some fun and simple coffee filter emoji crafts!

I have to admit: I was an early resister of emojis. I’m an English major and I believe strongly in the value of language to express feelings. I mean, a emoji with hearts for eyes isn’t quite the same as saying “I’m crazy about you!”

But when it comes to texting or reacting to things online, I have to say that emojis are pretty convenient. I guess the only time to really be nervous is if one of my kids holds up a picture of an emoji instead of actually answering one of my questions.

These fun coffee filter emoji crafts are so easy to make with kids!

If you and the kids enjoy making these little guys, be sure to check out some of our other crafts, including our cute coffee filter cat craft. Or get a list of projects to keep them happy all summer from our roundup of super easy, super fun summer crafts!

Be sure to check out the video tutorial and grab the printable instructions too!

Kids will love making these easy coffee filter emoji crafts!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Emoji Crafts

To make these coffee filter emoji crafts, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Three white basket coffee filters
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick

Simple Emoji Coffee Filter Craft

Start by flattening out each coffee filter. Use a bright yellow crayon to color the entire filter. Then glue it onto the center of a piece of colored construction paper.

Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

To make the sunglasses emoji, draw a smile with a black crayon along the bottom edge of the filter’s inner circle line. Be sure to darken it so that the smile line really shows up.

Easy Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

Sketch the top of the sunglasses by making a curved line across the bottom of the filter’s top third. Think of drawing the profile of a bird in flight to help you make the line correctly.

Simple Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

Then, just draw diagonal lines down toward the center from the edges. Draw straight lines across the bottom and diagonal lines up toward the top line to make the outline of the sunglasses. Color them in and you’re done!

Simple Coffee Filter Emoji Craft for Kids

To make the love emoji, sketch the two heart eyes with a red colored pencil. You want them to appear at an outward angle from each other. Then sketch an open smile with a black pencil.

Keep the expression centered by using the inner circle line of the filter as your “boundary” for the face.

Easy Coffee Filter Emoji Craft for Kids

Now, color in both of your heart eyes. This is also a good opportunity to even them out if they seem a little off or crooked.

Love Emoji Craft for Kids

And then color in your smile to wrap it up!

Emoji Coffee Filter Craft

The winking emoji is probably the easiest. Draw a thick half moon shape toward the bottom of the inner filter circle and color it in with a black crayon.

Draw the highest eyebrow at the outer left edge of the filter’s inner circle. Then add an oval eye about halfway between the eyebrow and the smile.

Draw the lower eyebrow at a point midway between the height of the highest eyebrow and the open eye. Then add the closed eye as a smaller version of the lower eyebrow. Finito!

These would be so cute to hang on the wall! Or to fold up and send as sweet cards to friends and family.

How are Beaches Formed?

It takes many, many years for beaches to form. What makes up a beach anyway?

Watch the short video below and see if your kids can answer the questions that follow.

1. What landform do beaches start from? (Answer: Mountains)

2. How do mountains lose particles? (Answer: Particles from mountains are eroded away and washed down rivers.)

3. How do particles from mountains end up on the beach? (Answer: They sink to the bottom of the river floor and are transported to the shore over time, forming beaches.)

4. Why don’t plants grow on the beach? (Answer: The salty air prevents plants from growing.)

How Do Ocean Waves Form?

Waves also contribute to the shape of beaches.

As they break onshore, waves wash particles away from the beach, eroding sand off the shore and down to the ocean floor.

Watch the following video to learn about how waves form and see if your students can answer the questions below.

1. What causes waves? (Answer: Weather events happening far away from the shore)

2. What determines how big waves are? (Answer: 1) How strong the winds offshore are blowing, 2) How long the winds have been blowing, and 3) How large an area the winds have been blowing over)

3. How do localized winds affect waves? (Answer: Localized winds are winds that blow just a few miles offshore. These winds can cause smaller waves near the beach.)

What Animals Live on the Beach?

Did you know that there are animals hiding in tide pools near the beach?

They hide under rocks when the tide goes out, but they’re there!

Watch this video to find out which animals live in ocean tide pools and challenge your kids to answer the questions that follow.

Printable Counting to 100 Flashcards

June 13, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Remember the Count on Sesame Street? I can’t exactly recall when I learned to count, but I like to think that he played a large role in my mastering that skill. I still say “One, ha, ha, ha!” on occasion.

What I learned from the Count is that learning to count should be fun. When kids have fun learning, they pick up on concepts so much faster!

Which is why I wanted to make some printable counting to 100 flashcards to help Piglet learn to master counting from 1 to 100. And I’m sharing them with my readers today!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

June 8, 2017 by Selena Robinson 17 Comments

Solar eclipses are an extremely big deal.

I remember seeing one when I was about 11 and it was the most fascinating phenomenon I have ever had the privilege to witness.

It was the middle of the day, but it suddenly got darker and darker until it was basically night.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. So I had to look it up in the encyclopedia (remember those?) to find out what actually happened. That’s when I learned about the awesomeness of solar eclipses.

So when I learned that those of us in the Northern Hemisphere were going to get a look at a solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, I got super excited and decided to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids.

This time, it’s a simple coffee filter solar eclipse craft!

What is a Solar Eclipse?

If you’d like to learn what a solar eclipse actually is, here’s a great video that explains the basics to kids.

If you’re wondering when is the next total solar eclipse for North America, it will come around on April 8, 2024. So we have a bit of a wait.

In case your students have never seen one, here’s an image of what a solar eclipse can actually look like.

Solar Eclipse

Since the moon is passing between the sun and the earth, we usually get to see a blackened circle with a white ring of light around the outside.

That white ring is the sun’s rays glowing around the shape of the moon.

Which is what we’re going to recreate with this easy craft!

Easy Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

To make this solar eclipse craft, you’ll need the following supplies: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Two white basket coffee filters
  • Construction paper (We used a black sheet of construction paper.)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons (You’ll be using a black crayon and a white crayon for this. You could also use colored pencils if you prefer.)
Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

Start by gluing one of the coffee filters onto a piece of black construction paper. Leave this one white to form the “sun” part of the eclipse.

Be sure to turn the paper horizontally and glue the white filter at one short end.

Now use a black crayon to color the other coffee filter black. This will form the “moon” part of the eclipse.

Learn with Diagrams: Online Sentence Diagramming for Kids

June 5, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

My middle schooler is a total grammar nerd. I can’t imagine where she might have gotten that from…*cough* it was me *cough*.

I remember loving Language Arts in school. I was totally into learning parts of speech, creative writing, poetry, and all the things that make English great.

But by the time I got to diagramming sentences, I was being homeschooled. And my mom had no idea how to do it, so I never learned to do it. That was…a certain number of years ago now, but I always regretted never learning how to diagram sentences. It looked like it would have been fun.

Sentence Diagramming Practice for Kids

So now that my daughter is at the age to learn how to diagram sentences, I was a little apprehensive about how to teach her. Which is why I was so thrilled to have a chance to review the wonderful online sentence diagramming program Learn with Diagrams!

See how this online grammar program makes it easy (and fun!) to learn how to diagram sentences!

Disclosure: I received access to this product in exchange for this post and I was compensated for my time. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.

Use this fun online sentence diagramming program to teach kids how to diagram sentences!

How Online Sentence Diagramming Works

Learn with Diagrams is a fully online grammar program. While it’s awesome for homeschoolers, it also works for afterschoolers or even public school families that want to give their kids a bit more practice in ELA.

Since the program is completely online, there’s no textbook (which saves storage space). And it’s a cinch to use!

Online Sentence Diagramming

We started off with Level 1, which is a nice introduction to how diagramming sentences can help kids learn grammar. It’s also a good, quick review of the parts of speech.

Each level of the program begins with a brief video that explains a set of grammatical concepts and how they are used in sentences. So kids are really getting a set of grammar lessons with coordinating grammar games.

Sentence Diagramming Homeschool Program

Basically, when you diagram a sentence, you break up the words according to the part of speech to which they belong. When you diagram correctly, you show that you understand each word’s role in the sentence.

Homeschool Sentence Diagramming Lessons

After the introductory video, which is short, kids get to try navigating the game through a guided level. This helps them learn to play the diagramming game correctly before the grammar lessons get too difficult.

Diagramming Sentences for Homeschoolers

The sentences begin at a very basic level: just nouns and verbs. As students progress, though, the sentences become a bit more complex.

Sentence Diagramming Program for Homeschool

Like so. So the program builds on itself, gradually increasing the parts of speech used in each sentence once students show they understand the previous lessons.

Homeschool Grammar Program

When kids complete a level successfully, they can unlock the next lesson. This is fabulous if you have a “skip-arounder” student who likes to just click all over the place. They can’t really do that in this program.

How to Use Online Sentence Diagramming to Teach Grammar

Since my middle schooler loves all things ELA, I didn’t have much trouble getting her to continue using Learn with Diagrams. But I was surprised at how much she learned in just a few lessons.

Sentence Diagramming Practice

She has a nice grasp of grammar, because she reads a lot. But I also want to make sure that she learns the correct terminology for each part of speech she uses.

In the early lessons, she had no trouble at all. As the lessons progressed, though, she started to pay closer attention to the section videos.

How to Diagram Sentences

After she watched the lesson video, she would start to practice diagramming the sentences based on that lesson.

Sentence Diagramming Grammar Practice

The tips at the bottom of the screen were very helpful for remembering what each part of speech meant and how to use it. And the first few examples are guided, showing students where to place their newly introduced words.

Sentence Diagramming Grammar Program

She was moving on to prepositional phrases in no time!

Sentence Diagramming Lessons

I don’t want to make it sound like she got every question right. She didn’t. But when she incorrectly identified a part of speech, the online sentence diagramming game would let her know and she’d try again.

How to Teach Sentence Diagramming

In some cases, we’d rewatch the lesson video to grasp exactly how each part of speech is used and to note some examples to watch for in the exercises.

Teach Kids to Diagram Sentences

She learned so much about grammar (that she didn’t know already) in just the first several lessons!

Online Sentence Diagramming Practice

And I (finally) learned how to diagram sentences! Woohoo!

How Do You Do It? – Confessions of a Fake Supermom

May 30, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Being a mom in the 21st century is pretty exhausting. It’s true that our mothers and our grandmothers had fewer modern conveniences than we did, but they also had much, much lower expectations. No one expected them to try to “do it all”.

Yet, most of us moms live under that expectation EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. Personally, I get sick of it. And what’s worse is that people think I actually live up to it!

Whenever I’m out with my kids, I get asked “How do you do it?” Friends ask me that. Family members ask me that. Even perfect strangers stop in the middle of Aisle 9 of the grocery store to ask me that!

Well, here’s a newsflash: I don’t do it all, I’m not good at everything I do, and I’m not always a happy mama to my kids. In short, if you’re looking for a perfect mom to admire, then I have to confess: I’m a fake supermom!

Whenever I'm out with the kids, the question I hear the most is How do you do it Well, to be honest, I don't! Here's what it's like to be a fake supermom.

Confessions of a Fake Supermom

Confession #1: I Really Don’t Do It All

I do homeschool my children. I do work (both outside and inside the home). And I do work out. So if you’re just outside looking in, it can really seem like I’m doing “it all”. Well, I’m not.

I use a lot of online homeschooling resources to ease the amount of time I spend teaching the kids. We also use a year-round school schedule that allows us to have school lessons three days a week only, which gives me a lot of flexibility.

My employer is very understanding and allows me to get most of my work done from home virtually. Without that concession, there’s no way I could have a job outside the home. My online work is also flexible. If it weren’t, I wouldn’t be doing it.

And I do work out, but not as much as I’d like to and not in the kinds of activities I’d like to. I wish I could attend gym classes regularly, lift weights more often, and take up more sports. But I just don’t have time for all of that. Maybe in a few years.

If any of you have pictured me as an all-day homeschool teacher with two full-time jobs on the side who’s in perfect shape, I have to burst your bubble and tell you it’s not so. I’ve learned how to do some of everything I want to do. But I can’t do it all. No one can.

Confession #2: I’m Really Not Good at Everything

With all of these interests, I must be a jack of all trades, right? Wrong!

I have ADD, which means that I get interested in all kinds of things. Almost on a monthly basis. And while that keeps my life interesting, it also makes it very difficult to stick with something long enough to truly master it. So I end up being kind of okay at a lot of things, but great at almost nothing.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to force myself to finish what I start, which has drastically reduced the number of interests I have. But I’m not good at everything I do and I may never be. Which is just fine.

Confession #3: I’m Not a Happy Mom Everyday

By nature, I’m a pretty sunny person. I tend to be positive and upbeat…for the most part. But parenting is hard, even when you’re a naturally happy soul. And there are days when I feel so sad I can barely stand to get up in the morning.

I don’t talk about it a lot, because it doesn’t change anything and because I know it will pass. Complaining doesn’t help me much. I still have to be a mom and I have to keep going, whether I feel like it or not. But the fact that I don’t vent a lot doesn’t mean I don’t struggle. I do.

In fact, I think that might be something I talk about more on the blog. What do you think?

How Do You Do It Confessions of a Fake Supermom

If you’ve been struggling trying to make yourself live up to some perfect image of a superwoman or supermom, let me reassure you of this: There are no supermoms. Every mother who looks like one isn’t really one. Which means you don’t have to try to be that either. Take it from me: an honest-to-goodness fake supermom!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

May 25, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We’re on a roll with our coffee filter crafts, so I thought why not add a little “rock” to our roll with a fun coffee filter vinyl record craft!

My parents had a record player for a while and I vividly remember the small collection of records that used to stand against the wall behind the stereo in our living room. Sometimes my brother and I would sneak and look at them. (We weren’t supposed to touch them, because they could be scratched so easily. Also, because my brother was really into hip hop and we would probably have used them for mixing.)

But my kids didn’t have the slightest idea what a record was. When they saw one for the first time, they said “Wow! That’s a big CD!” Obviously, we needed to go back and provide some music education.

Cute Vinyl Record Craft for Kids

This was a really fun project and it would be a nice fit for lots of units. If you’re studying about musical cities, such as Nashville or Detroit, this would be a good craft. Or if you’re learning the history of the blues, rock and roll, or rap, this craft would be fun for kids to make. Or you could just make it because it’s neat!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

To make this coffee filter vinyl record craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • One white binder reinforcement sticker

Simple Vinyl Record Coffee Filter Craft

Start by flattening out the coffee filter. Then use a glue stick to glue it onto the center of a piece of construction paper.

Vinyl Record Coffee Filter Craft

Use a black crayon to draw a light circle around the center. Color from the circle outward to shade in the outer circle of the filter. Leave the center white (for now).

Vinyl Record Craft for Kids

Use a light color for the center circle. I used teal, but any color that’s light enough to write on will work. This will be the “record label”.

Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

Stick a binder reinforcement sticker in the center. Use a pencil or another sharp object to drive a hole through the middle of the sticker to make the “hole” for the record player.

Easy Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

Add a title for your record with a colored pencil! Ours is called “#1 Hit” by the world-famous record company Top Records. Hasn’t everyone heard of them? 🙂

Then I added a few musical notes – just for decoration.

Cute Vinyl Record Craft

“Put the needle on the record / put the needle on your brain

Once the needle hits the record / it’ll never be the same”

I’ll see myself out now.
