7 Ways to Help Kids Prepare for A First Summer Camp

May 31, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Going away to summer camp can be a little scary or intimidating for some children. And it’s not just children who may be a little uneasy. Parents can be too!

Our oldest is going to summer camp for the first time this year. Well, actually, she’s doing three of them this year: tennis camp, STEAM camp, and web development camp. And both she and I are a little nervous.

As homeschoolers, we can get so used to spending time with one another that going to “class” can be a strange experience. Actually, that’s one of the reasons why my husband and I have decided to enroll her in camp in the first place. It’s time to start spreading her wings…just a tiny bit.

How to Prepare Your Child for a First Summer Camp

So that’s why I wanted to share these seven ways to help prepare your child for a first summer camp. If your child is dreading the day they leave instead of counting down the days, try these tips to help them calm down, look on the bright side, and get excited about what they’ll learn!

Summer camp is a beautiful time for kids to come together and learn and grow, and make lasting memories they will cherish for a lifetime. It’s entirely rational for a child to be scared the first year or two. These tools below can be used to help your child see the possibility of the best summer ever.

Looking for more ways to make summer awesome? Don’t miss our list of super fun, super easy summer crafts for kids!

Ready to send your child off to camp for the first time? Here are seven ways to help prepare your child for a first summer camp!

7 Ways To Prepare Your Child for A First Summer Camp

Personal Experience

Sit down and share your own experience of summer camp from when you were a kid. Let them know what a fun time you had, and the memories that you still have today. Don’t focus on any negatives but let them know how fun it was. You can also share if you were scared at first and how good it turned out for you.

Personally, neither my husband nor I went to summer camp as kids. But we did go to public school and we’ve used those experiences to help prepare our kids for their time away from us. It always seems to help.

It’s OK To Be Nervous

Remind your child it’s okay if they are a little nervous to go. It’s natural to miss home or be a bit anxious to leave your parents. But once they arrive at the camp and settle in, they will start having a great summer.

For our daughter, we went with a first summer camp that is located at a center she’s already familiar with and offered by instructors she already knows. Some of the kids in those classes will also be at the camp, so she’ll have a warm welcome right away.

Let Your Child Have a Say

If you’ve decided that summer camp will be a good experience for your kids, don’t be quick to let them talk you out of it. BUT – it is wise to let them have some input in what kind of camp they’ll attend and where it is located.

In our family, we chose camps that covered topics our daughter was already interested in. So, while she’s a bit nervous for the first day, she’s also looking forward to learning more about topics she knows she likes.

Camping Buddy

Consider talking to your child’s best friend’s parents and see if they are going to camp. If they are you can reassure your child, they will know someone. Or talk to other parents and find a few people your kiddo will know that is planning to go to summer camp. Just like entering anything, you feel safer if you know a few people.

Communication

When your kids come home in the afternoon, stay positive and let them know you’re proud of them and that all is going well. Encourage them to talk about what they’re learning, who they’re meeting, and even the parts of the camp they don’t like.

If your kiddo begins expressing concerns about camp, stop and let him or her speak freely. Truly listen to the fears or stresses about camp to see if you can help alleviate that stress. Be careful not to dismiss their fears.

Build Enthusiasm

If your child is still not really “feeling” the idea of camp, you can build their excitement by letting them find a new outfit to wear on the first day. (This alone is going to do wonders for our teen.)

You can also plan some cute lunches for them to take along or let them get involved in making a special treat to share with their fellow campers and camp leaders.

Walkthrough

Sit down and give your child a walkthrough of what they will experience. How are lunches and snacks served? What if they get hungry and it’s not snack time? What kind of activities can they participate in? How many kids will potentially be there? Try to find out as much out the camp as you can in advance and share this information with your child.

It’s a good idea to visit the center where the first summer camp will be held and let your child get a look at it. Seeing where they will spend their days can do a lot to reduce fear of the unknown and ease their worries.

Just remember to focus on the positives they can take away and listen to their concerns. They won’t know what to expect till they arrive at camp. And who knows? Maybe they’ll come away with a new outlook on learning!

How did you help your kids get ready for their first summer camp? Did things work out well? Share your experiences in the comments!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

May 28, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

I’m not a big fan of insects, especially the ones that try to sneak into your house when the weather gets warm. I mean, if Mr. Centipede is willing to chip in on the mortgage, I might be open to it. Otherwise, that’s a no from me.

But I do love butterflies. It’s wonderful to see them fluttering around during the warmer months.

So for our newest coffee filter crafts for kids project, I thought we’d make a simple coffee filter butterfly craft!

Easy Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft for Kids to Make!

These were so much fun and they only took a few minutes from beginning to end. Seriously.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

To make this easy coffee filter butterfly craft, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter (you’ll need one per butterfly)
  • Colored craft sticks (one per butterfly)
  • Crayons
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Washable markers

Simple Coffee Filter Butterfly

To start, fold the coffee filter in half.

Easy Coffee Filter Butterfly

Then use the scissors to cut a triangular piece from each end. You’ll want to cut on an angle to make the “V” shape at the top and bottom.

Be sure to cut through both of the coffee filter halves. Otherwise, you’ll have wings on one side and a circular shape on the other.

Making a Simple Coffee Filter Butterfly

When you open up the filter, you should have this.

Making a Simple Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

Use a bright colored crayon to draw four circles on the wings: one at each corner.

Easy Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

Color all around the circles with the crayon. (This is if you want to have white circles on your butterfly’s wings.)

Making an Easy Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

Use a glue stick to spread glue on the back of a craft stick. Stick it firmly in the center of the coffee filter.

Simple Coffee Filter Butterfly Craft

Add glue to the back of the coffee filter wings and press them gently onto a piece of construction paper. Once your butterflies are in place, add a set of antennae with a black marker.

Done!

With our second butterfly, we added silver circle stickers on the wing spots. But you can color them a different color or use any stickers you like!

DIY Solar System Edible Playdough

May 21, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Have you ever tried making your own playdough? We’ve done it several times and it’s always a big hit with our kids.

But, if you really want to take it to the next level, edible playdough is where it’s at. Remember always thinking that playdough looked good and then being disappointed when you tried to taste it (whenever your mom wasn’t looking, that is)? Edible playdough actually does taste amazing.

Fun and Easy Solar System Edible Playdough Recipe

So for a fun astronomy sensory play activity, I thought my kids would love some DIY Solar System Edible Playdough! This is so simple and fun to make! And it’s a sweet treat for the kids to enjoy too. (Just don’t let them eat too much or they’ll be bouncing off the ceiling.) Read on to get the recipe for yourself!

Want more fun sensory play? Don’t miss our simple DIY flubber kids can make!

This fun solar system-themed edible playdough is a perfect sensory activity for summer!

Solar System Edible Playdough

Basically, you’re going to make colored sugar frosting. Which is why the kids shouldn’t eat too much, you know?

Solar System Edible Playdough Ingredients

You can use any color of frosting you like, but the Funfetti brand has some awesome brightly colored versions that will give you a lovely color for each planet.

To make Earth and moon playdough, we went with blue frosting (for Earth) and yellow frosting (for the moon).

Solar System Edible Play Dough

Mix the two together to get the right consistency. You want it squishy, but still kind of firm.

DIY Edible Solar System Playdough

Turn your mixture onto a wooden surface.

Finished Earth Edible Playdough

Let the kids mix it up with their little fingers!

Finished Moon Edible Playdough

This is great gross motor skill practice, by the way.

Solar System Edible Playdough Recipe

All you need now are two empty jars with lids (baby food jars are perfect), colored ribbon, and some cute solar system stickers!

Making Solar System Edible Playdough

Fill each jar with one color of the playdough.

Easy Solar System Edible Playdough for Kids

And add the lids!

These particular stickers came from a brick-and-mortar store, but if you want to get something solar system-themed online, try these solar system planet stickers. I actually think those are even better, because you can choose from specific planets with the planet names.

And with the different frosting colors, you could make a batch for every planet in the solar system!

DIY Solar System Edible Playdough Recipe

These would make awesome party favors, but your kids will also love making up their own solar system edible playdough to play with (and taste!).

How to Choose a Secular Science Curriculum

May 10, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When you think of a “secular” homeschooler, what comes to mind? You might think of a parent who supports evolution, practices atheism, or chooses not to follow religious beliefs. There are secular homeschoolers who fit this description. In fact, I personally know some who do.

But, this doesn’t describe our family. We’re deeply religious, but we still choose to use a secular science curriculum. Why?

It’s because many faith-based homeschooling programs include tenets that we do not personally subscribe to – particularly when it comes to science. So, we’ve always preferred a secular science curriculum that we can teach, while including our religious point of view.

Still, that’s made choosing a science curriculum somewhat difficult, because many secular programs don’t line up with what we want to teach our kids either. Fortunately, we’ve found one we like. Through our search this year, I discovered a few tips that helped us choose a secular science program.

Disclosure: I am a BookShark brand ambassador and am receiving free curriculum as part of my role.

Is choosing a secular science curriculum for your homeschool a challenge? Try these pointers to find the program that will work for your family!

Images c/o: StockUnlimited

How to Choose a Secular Science Curriculum

1. Consider your educational goals.

First, think about what you want your children to learn this year:

  • Do you want them to get an introduction to the universe, to the science of Earth, or a look at the wide world of wildlife?
  • Are you ready for them to tackle basic chemistry or physics?
  • Do you want the kids to try lots of experiments themselves?

Science programs vary greatly. Some feature hands-on experiments and activities, while others are more lecture-heavy. Take your children’s readiness into account when deciding which program to try.

2. Decide which scientific principles are important to you at this age.

In the homeschool world, kids may learn at different grade levels, depending on the subject. A child who’s reading several grade levels ahead may need to stay at their current grade level or even *gasp* take a step back to get a good foundation in science.

That’s fine! Think about the age of your child. What scientific principles do you want your child to learn now? Look for a program that will cover those topics.

For our rising first-grader, we wanted to get an overview of all scientific branches: geology, biology, physics, and chemistry. So when we selected our first grade science program, we chose one that would give her an introduction to all of these.

3. Browse the program to look for possible areas of contention.

Once you narrow down your selections to a few programs, take a look at the scope and sequence, as well as the learning objectives, to see if there are any topics that may be a problem for your family.

Personally, I didn’t want to go through the trouble of finding (and purchasing!) a secular science curriculum only to skip several chapters of it. So I carefully read the program overviews to see if what was taught would suit us, or at least be easy to adapt for our family.

How to Choose a Secular Science Curriculum for Homeschoolers

This year, we’ve decided on BookShark for our youngest child. She’s entering first grade this fall and BookShark’s science curriculum is an excellent fit for what we want her to learn this year.

While BookShark isn’t strictly secular, it’s faith-free. It doesn’t promote evolution, but it also doesn’t promote the “young earth” viewpoint. We can simply discuss what scientists have come to know and we’re excited to see what we can learn.

I’ll be sharing more of our journey with BookShark throughout this upcoming school year!

3 Ways to Motivate Yourself When You Work at Home

May 8, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Whenever I tell someone I work from home, their response is usually “Wow! I wish I could work at home!”

Well….they’re right and wrong about that.

Working from home definitely has its perks. I can set my own schedule, I take breaks when I feel like it (for the most part), and I have instant access to my house and family.

But there are also drawbacks to working from home and one of the biggest is needing to motivate myself to get stuff done. I have no boss standing over my shoulder and no workmates to inspire me to be productive. It’s all on me.

Which is exhausting.

There are so many ways to lose focus and motivation when you're working from home. Here are the work at home productivity tips I use to get my butt in gear as a WAHM!

3 Ways to Motivate Yourself When You Work from Home

To be fair, I’ve had a lot of practice at working on my time. I was homeschooled from seventh grade onward and the responsibility for getting my schoolwork done was completely on me. That was my first experience at setting my own work schedule.

In addition, both of my parents were entrepreneurs, so I got to witness firsthand why self-discipline is so essential to making a self-employed business work.

Personally, I’ve worked from home since 2009. Over the years, I found a few work at home productivity tips that are simple, effective, and easy to adapt. I use them regularly and they do not fail to get me moving, no matter how much I’m dragging in the morning.
