20 Fun Family Night Ideas

Fun Family Night Ideas

How many times have you heard the kids say “I’m bored” over the past month? I couldn’t possibly keep count of how many times my kids have said it. My best estimate is 982. And I think I’m guessing too low.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

January 8, 2018 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

We live in Georgia. So if we want to experience real winter weather, we usually have to travel pretty far north. Naturally, there was no way we would ever see penguins in their natural habitat.

But we did get to visit the Georgia Aquarium a few years back and when we stopped at the penguin exhibit, we got to see them running around, diving into the water, shooting through the water like rockets, and more. It turns out that penguins are pretty entertaining.

We’ve gotten to make a few animals as part of our coffee filter crafts for kids series. Now that winter is here, we had to add a coffee filter penguin craft to the mix! Read on to see how you can make one with your kids too!

Easy Coffee Filter Penguin Craft for Kids to Make

When you finish making this, add more of our winter-themed coffee filter craft projects! You can make a coffee filter moose craft or a jolly coffee filter snowman too!

Make this easy and cute coffee filter penguin craft with the kids this winter!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

To make this coffee filter penguin craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One White basket coffee filter
  • Crayons
  • Glue stick
  • Construction paper
  • Child-safe scissors

DIY Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Start by gluing the coffee filter in the center of the construction paper. After that, use a black crayon to draw two indented lines toward the top of the filter. (You’re outlining the white part of the penguin’s face.)

Easy Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Color the spaces on either side of those lines black.

Like so.

Winter Playdough Mats for Kids

Our penguin is pretty sleepy, so we drew it with eyes closed.

Coffee Filter Penguin Craft for Kids

What long eyelashes you have, penguin! (Actually, it kind of looks like a ninja at the moment.)

Simple Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Then we used the safety scissors to cut a triangle out of orange construction paper. Then we glued it in the center to form the beak.

Cute Coffee Filter Penguin Craft

Finally, we added a few falling snow flurries in the background.

At this point, you could really be finished. But we wanted to make our penguin into a lady bird.

Easy Coffee Filter Penguin Craft for Kids

So we gave her two blush circles on her cheeks out of pink construction paper. Isn’t she lovely?

I Want to Homeschool But I Can’t Be With My Kids All Day!

January 4, 2018 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We have been homeschooling for nine years now and, over the years, I’ve heard many parents express reasons why they feel they can’t homeschool (even though they’d like to).

The reasons I’ve heard range from “I’m too broke to homeschool” to “I’m not a teacher” to “I’m too busy to homeschool my kids”.

But my favorite reason ever is “I could never homeschool, because I can’t be with my kids all day!”

Do you feel that way? It’s understandable. The idea of spending all day homeschooling your own children can be overwhelming, especially if you have more than one child. But it’s likely that the idea of homeschooling you have is quite different from what homeschooling can be.

See how you can homeschool your kids, even if you’re not the most patient person on Earth.

Do you want to homeschool but feel that you can't possibly spend all day with your kids? Here's how to manage it.

I Want to Homeschool, But…I Can’t Be With My Kids All Day!

Images c/o: Lenanichizhenova & aletia / depositphotos

This is a perfectly natural feeling.

First, I just want to reassure you of something: It’s fine that you feel this way. I’ve heard a few homeschoolers shame other parents for expressing this sentiment. But we shouldn’t.

Parenting is HARD. And sending the kids off to public school everyday is the only break that many parents get. So the idea of not even getting that break everyday can be overwhelming. I also thought I was going to get that shot of daily “me” time when we sent our kids to public school for a few months. And I was sorely in need of a break myself.

So if you’ve said this or felt this way, you are not alone. I get it.

You do NOT have to be the sole educator.

When you picture homeschooling, are you imagining yourself at the chalkboard teaching classes from 9 to 3? If so, stop. You don’t ever have to put that kind of responsibility on yourself. Homeschooling can be flexible and versatile and, thanks to technology, you can use tons of teaching resources that will make your job easier.

In our family, we use several educational websites (including BrainPop, Khan Academy, and my new favorite Flocabulary) to put together our lesson plans. I only spend about five hours a week actually teaching.

The rest is watching educational videos, completing activities, and letting the kids show what they’ve learned. I’m just one of many teachers on the faculty at our school. 🙂

It’s okay to take a break from your kids.

Does that mean you won’t ever want or need a break from being with your kids? Of course not! It’s exhausting parenting and teaching little people all day.

If you had a full-time job outside the home, wouldn’t you get a lunch break each day? You should get one when your full-time job is educating your children too.

So I’m telling you: Get your break every. single. day. I’m serious. Do not go a day without carving out time for yourself to just breathe and think.

I’m not ashamed to say that I totally use the television for this. I put on an educational television show that the kids like (Curious George, WordGirl, Wild Kratts, etc) and let them watch for half an hour and I go straight to my room where I either read, take a nap, or shower. Sometimes I even use that time to go for a run in our neighborhood. It does wonders for my mood.

Do you want to homeschool but think you can't because you're not a teacher? See why you can still homeschool your kids!

Think you're too broke to homeschool your kids Believe it or not, homeschooling doesn't have to cost a lot!

Simple Science Experiments: Simple Light Refraction Experiment

December 28, 2017 by Selena Robinson 9 Comments

This simple light refraction experiment for kids is an awesome way to learn about the properties of light!
Simple Light Refraction Experiment - Look! We're Learning!

We’re continuing with our simple science experiments this week by taking a look at light refraction. I found a great light refraction experiment video on YouTube and decided to try it with Tigger.

Full disclosure: I didn’t know that refraction was what this experiment demonstrated. I actually had to look it up first. But the experiment is super easy and quick, so that’s a big plus!

Simple Refraction of Light Experiment

Check out this easy way to teach kids about light with this simple light refraction experiment!

And, if you like this one, try some of our other science activities, including how to make an egg float and our easy heat conduction experiment!

Study the properties of light with this simple light refraction experiment!

Simple Light Refraction Experiment

Watching the original light refraction experiment on YouTube will give you a great look at what’s involved in this activity. But you really only need four things:

  • A sticky note (I used a Post-It)
  • A marker
  • An empty transparent bottle
  • Water

Experiment on Refraction of Light

Draw two arrows on a sticky note. Make sure that each arrow points in a different direction. Stick the note to a blank wall.

Next, fill up the water bottle. Oh – put the lid on before you do this too! You don’t want water spilling out when you move the bottle around…lol.

Simple Refraction Experiment

The alternating arrows on the note point to the left and the right. Let the kids gradually move the water-filled bottle in front of the sticky note. As the bottle moves in front of the sticky note, something amazing happens.

Investigating Light Refraction

The arrows appear to change direction! The top arrow, which points to the left, appears to point to the right. And the bottom arrow, which points to the right, appears to point to the left!

Simple Light Experiment

Move the bottle back to see the arrows return to their original directions.

So what exactly is going on? We learned that refraction occurs because light bends when it passes through substances, such as water and plastic.

As the light travels through a substance, it becomes concentrated into a focal point, usually near the center. After light passes through the focal point, the rays cross over each other and cause images to appear reversed.

Turns out you can’t believe your eyes after all! 🙂

Teach Kids to Bake with a Cooking Lapbook

December 19, 2017 by Selena Robinson 3 Comments

Learning to Bake with a Cooking Lapbook
This cooking lapbook is a fun way to teach kids how to cook for themselves!

I have to admit: I’ve been super lax about getting my kids into the kitchen. Tigger knows how to prepare breakfast and lunch for us all, but the boys….not so much.

Since our kids have ADHD, it’s hard to help them exercise caution and take their time, which are two of the MOST important skills you need to learn if you’re going to cook.

So I was glad to get a chance to review this adorable Cooking Lapbook from Knowledge Box Central! With it, our boys got a lesson in kitchen safety and a chance to make their very first dessert!

Disclosure: I received a copy of this resource in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own and I was not required to post a positive review.

Teach kids how to cook with this fun, hands-on cooking lapbook!

Learning to Bake with a Cooking Lapbook

First of all, we needed to assemble the lapbook, which did take some time.

Here’s the list of supplies you’ll need: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Colored file folders
  • Hot glue gun with glue sticks (for gluing the folders together)
  • Colored paper
  • Stapler with staples
  • Metal brad fasteners
  • Tacky glue (for gluing the minibooks into the folders)

Cooking Lapbook Review

But look how pretty it is!
Cooking Lapbook Review

Here’s the inside of the first folder.

Then the second…

Cooking Lapbook Review

and the third.

Cooking Lapbook Review

We decided to begin at the beginning with the activity “What is the first thing you should do BEFORE cooking?” Anyone have an idea what it is?

*hums Jeopardy thinking music*

It’s “Wash Your Hands”! The lesson plan included in the Cooking Lapbook described how children should be washing their hands before they cook. So we all got up, used warm water, lathered for 20 seconds, and rinsed well. 😉

See the lapbook in action on the next page!

DIY Flubber Sensory Activity for Kids

My kids, like most children, love to play with playdough. So we’ve done a LOT of playdough activities for kids over the years. But for a new sensory experience, we decided to make something different: DIY flubber!

And it turned out really, really well. In fact, it worked out so perfectly that I…uh…played with it too. I regret nothing. 🙂

Simple DIY Flubber for Kids

Read on to see how we made flubber using just a few household ingredients! And if you like this simple activity, check out our list of super easy preschool crafts you can make in just 10 minutes!

This easy DIY flubber recipe is one of our favorite sensory play activities!

Easy DIY Flubber for Kids!

We decided to try out a very popular recipe for making flubber. If you’re not familiar with flubber, it also goes by the names “slime” and “gak”. It’s pretty much a stiff kind of “Magic Muck“, which we made a while back. But it’s very solid, so it’s easy to clean up after. Win!

The project was originally shared from Live Craft Eat and it turned out to be a great recipe for DIY flubber! It took about five minutes.

You’ll just need a few ingredients: (Affiliate links provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Liquid glue
  • Borax powder
  • Food coloring
  • Water

Making DIY Flubber for Kids

The kids were fascinated at the various textures of the flubber. It felt slippery initially, but then it turned rubbery the more we used it.

Easy DIY Flubber

We could even make handprints with it!

Playing with Homemade Flubber

We also found that when we stretched the flubber out and then let it sit on the table for a while, it returned to a single flat puddle on its own.

Easy DIY Flubber for Kids

It even breaks cleanly when you pull it, but it slowly returns to a flat blob in time.

Simple DIY Flubber for Kids to Make

But if you pick it up, it will run through your fingers! Super, super cool.

If you prefer to make DIY flubber without Borax, I found this great Borax-free flubber recipe from Little Bins for Little Hands. Works just as well! 😉
