Relaxed Homeschooling for the Uptight Mom

June 29, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Okay. I admit it. I’m an uptight mom. Over the years, I’ve learned that the best way to manage my ADHD is to be extremely structured in almost everything I do. As a result, I tend to be pretty uptight.

While that strategy works for me as an individual, it does not work for me as a homeschooling mom. And it doesn’t work very well for my kids, either. I firmly believe that my tendency to structure every aspect of my life led to my burnout last fall, which resulted in The Great Homeschool Public School Experiment.

Now that we’ve returned to homeschooling, I’ve learned something very valuable: Relaxed homeschooling is a beautiful thing, even for uptight moms.

Why Relaxed Homeschooling Was So Hard for Me

First, I have to say that the idea of relaxed homeschooling was not new to me. We’ve always been eclectic homeschoolers, so we follow bits and pieces of several philosophies, including Charlotte Mason, workbooks, and unit studies.

However, even though I pieced my curriculum together from several sources, I still tended to follow an extremely structured schedule with my kids. The idea of “letting go and letting them learn” was something that I just couldn’t bring myself to do.

I worried that my kids wouldn’t learn enough. I worried that I wouldn’t do enough with them. And I worried that they would lose appreciation for what they learned.

How We Teach eBook

Why I Wanted to Try Relaxed Homeschooling

Watching my children adjust to the increased workload of public school, though, made it very clear that a structured, heavily scheduled approach is not always best for children. Instead of feeling driven to excel, my kids were exhausted, irritable, and overwhelmed. While they enjoyed some of their lessons, they only had a few moments to appreciate them before rushing off to the next subject or preparing for an upcoming standardized test.

I decided that, when we got the chance to homeschool again, I would make sure they could learn and breathe at the same time. And now that they’re home, we’re learning in a much more relaxed way.

What I’ve Learned from Relaxed Homeschooling

Rather than scheduling times for lessons, I just set a broad goal for that day and we go from there. We also explore our read-alouds together and expand on whatever is mentioned in the book. In our Pack-n-Go Girls review last week, discussing the story led to an exploration of Mexico and dolphins – all of which stemmed from just reading a book together!

Interestingly, now that we’ve taken a more relaxed approach, I’ve observed that my kids are learning more now than they did before. They’re less stressed and, as a result, they remember what we cover much easier. And I’ve learned that I enjoy our lessons more, which helps me remain consistent far better than having my planned schedule nag me to begin teaching.

I’ll probably still be planning our homeschool year this month, but I’m looking forward to implementing it without the pressure of meeting a set learning goal or covering a certain number of pages. If we can all enjoy our lessons together, that’ll be a learning win for the day. 🙂

Do you take a relaxed homeschooling approach? How do you cover your lessons each day? Share your experiences in the comments!

Hands On Learning Ideas with Family Fun Friday!

June 25, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Keeping active kids interested in learning can be really difficult. And if you think it’s hard during the school year, imagine how tough it is during the summer months!

Since several of our kids have ADHD, they can lose interest in an activity so fast it makes my head spin! 🙂 But last week’s Family Fun Friday had some fabulous posts with hands on learning ideas that will keep even the most distractible child involved in their lessons!

5 Things That Make ADHD Homeschooling Easier

June 22, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

I’ve been sharing about my decision to return to homeschooling this fall after enrolling my kids in public school for a few months last school year. One of the major reasons why I decided to take a homeschooling break was because I was burned out. Three of our kids have ADHD, as do I, and keeping everyone on task (including me) was becoming a challenge. It was time to take a break.

But now that things have settled back down, I’m planning for how I can make this upcoming school year our best (and most relaxed one) yet. And so today, I’m sharing five things that make ADHD homeschooling easier!

By the way, this is one of those posts that contains great advice that I really need to take myself. So if I ever write about being burned out again, please remind me to come back and read this post. 🙂

Things That Make ADHD Homeschooling Easier

5 Things that Make ADHD Homeschooling Easier

1. Math Manipulatives

Tigger is not a math fan. But when we use math manipulatives, she enjoys it much, much more. That means taking math off the textbook page and making it interactive.

We use both Unifix Cubes and Counting Bears to help our kids visualize their math problems while learning. We’ve also used a literary approach with resources such as Life of Fred and Arithmetic Village to make the problems more of a “visual” exercise for her.

2. Flash Cards

Flash cards are a huge help with covering homeschooling topics with our kids. Roo, in particular, loves them because he is partial to holding items while we cover lessons.

He’s continually fidgeting, so if he can move cards around by flipping them, matching them, or using them for memory drills, he learns critical terms and pictures much faster. (See all of our free printable flashcards available here in the store!)

3. Music

All of our kids love to dance, so we use music pretty often. We take dance breaks in between lessons and when we clean up the house, we play music to encourage them to relax.

Personally, when I have trouble focusing on a task for our homeschool, such as planning lessons or organizing my resources, I use Focus @ Will. It’s an online streaming music service that plays instrumental tracks according to the mood you select. They even have a channel for ADHD, and it works wonders for my concentration.

4. Educational Games

Another big part of making learning interesting for my kids with ADHD is to use educational games. I try to pick games that are either short on directions or short on time, which keeps my kids from getting frustrated as they learn how to play.

Stare Junior! is one of our very favorite games. It’s a game that helps kids practice observing by staring at a picture for two minutes and then trying to remember details from it. We also like BrainBox Nature, because it’s a super short game (2 minutes each round) and it’s a perfect way to break up lessons while continuing with something educational.

5. Brain Breaks

I mentioned Brain Breaks in a post I wrote over at The Homeschool Post about my favorite things about homeschooling with ADHD, but the ebook deserves another shout out here. Brain Breaks are great for helping our kids “let off steam”.

They get to choose their own activity and then complete it in a short round. Plus, there are lots of activities to choose from, so they never get bored with their choices.

How to Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

June 19, 2015 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

As a second-generation homeschooler, my heart belongs with paper books, planners, and notebooks. (There’s just something about the smell of paper and erasers in the morning.)

However, I have seen the need to jump into the digital age and, as a result, I am now the proud owner of a TON of digital homeschool resources. A ton.

But here’s the thing: If you can’t find anything on your computer, then all of your resources don’t really do a lot of good, do they? 🙂 So I came up with a simple way to organize digital homeschool resources, which I’m sharing with you today!

Simple Way to Organize Digital Homeschool ResourcesHow I Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

Here’s my big secret…

….

…..

I use Windows File Explorer.

That’s it!

It’s really, really simple, but it really, really works. Here’s how:

How I Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

I have my digital homeschool resources organized by the type of “school” to which they belong: Elementary for PK-5, Middle for 6-8, and High for 9-12 – just like in public school. I also have a separate folder for Planning, which I’ll get to in a minute.

How I Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

Within each “school” level, I have items separated by grade level. For example, my “Elementary” folder is organized by specific grade. Then for things that aren’t really grade specific, I have individual folders such as “Foreign Language”, “Unit Studies”, and “PE“. I also have a few general subject folders that include resources for several grades.

Within each grade-specific level, files are organized again by subject. This is a look at my second-grade folder. So when it’s time to plan second grade, which I’ll be teaching with Roo this fall, I can just browse through the folder for each subject and plan from there. Much, much better than stockpiling resources and then forgetting about them until a year or two after the grade is finished. (Been there, done that.)

How I Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

Now, my “Planning” folder is organized a bit differently. I am a total homeschool planner packrat. I have all kinds of planners on my hard drive, so they have their own folder. Then I have a folder for “Notebooking”, one for “Clip Art”, and another for “Teaching Tips”, because those make up the bulk of my downloadable resources that are not directly for the kids to use on their own.

As you can see, I also have two other folders: one for the 2013 Omnibus and another for the 2014 Omnibus from iHomeschool Network. I was thrilled to be a contributing author last year and I’m looking forward to sharing in the sale again this summer.

How I Organize Digital Homeschool Resources

I mean, look at all those wonderful resources! Whenever I need a homeschool pick-me-up, I click open one of those folders and just read and read and read. 🙂

Big Book of Homeschool Ideas

How I Store Digital Homeschool Resources

Of course, sorting and organizing all of my files won’t matter much if my computer crashes. So, I use a couple of methods to keep my digital homeschool resources safe.

First, I store everything on my computer and on a USB flash drive. I usually have to get one with a decent amount of memory, because I am an admitted digital curriculum hoarder. 🙂

In addition, I back everything on my computer’s hard drive up once each week onto an external hard drive. I like Seagate’s portable external hard drive, because it’s super easy to use and I can take it with me if I go out of town. (Really, it’s so easy to use that I kicked myself for not having gotten one earlier.)

And that’s how I organize digital homeschool resources! If you have any tips or suggestions to share, please do so in the comments!

Homeschool Inspiration Ideas with Family Fun Friday!

Pooh is taking his math standardized test in school this week. Since math is not his strong subject, he’s been a bit nervous. Still, we’ve managed to help him get through the process of testing (as we did with Tigger a couple of grades back).

Standardized testing can be a real challenge to kids, whether they’re in public school or homeschool. So I wanted to share a post I got to write over at The Multi Taskin’ Mom that’s all about how to help kids deal with this process.

Today is also another edition of Family Fun Friday! Scroll on down to read some great homeschool inspiration ideas!

Helping Kids Manage Standardized Testing

Here in our state, they’re using a new standardized test this year and the teachers spent a LOT of time preparing the kids to take it. However, since Pooh is in first grade, he hasn’t had a lot of practice with testing. When we homeschooled, I didn’t administer a standardized test until third grade. (I plan on resuming that policy once we return to homeschooling this fall.)

I have learned, though, that it’s important to help kids get comfortable with the testing process, especially if they have to test earlier. Stop by The Multi Taskin’ Mom to learn more about how to help kids manage standardized testing!

And now…it’s time for Family Fun Friday! 🙂

Last week, there were some great posts shared with homeschool inspiration ideas! Naturally, I’m in full school-year-planning mode, so I’m on the hunt for all kinds of fun ideas to do next year with the kids. Read on to see my favorites from last week!

Why I'm Returning to Homeschooling

Why I’m Choosing to Homeschool Again

May 11, 2015 by Selena Robinson 6 Comments

As you might know, our family has recently experienced a serious change: we took a homeschooling break and put our children in public school. For us, that was a major adjustment – something I never thought I would do.

Well, after six months, we’ve decided to end the Great Homeschool Public School Experiment and bring our children back home after the school year ends. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that we were returning to homeschooling, but I wanted to explain exactly why we decided to do so.

Here’s why I’m returning to homeschooling.

Why I'm Returning to Homeschooling

Image: nadezhda1906 / Dollar Photo Club

Why I’m Returning to Homeschooling

1. I wanted a second chance with my kids.

When the kids went off to school, I had (a little) more time to think. I’d walk by our homeschooling space and think about how harried I had been and how much pressure I felt to teach them everything on the objectives list each year.

I remembered responding testily when one of my kids had a question. I remembered shouting at Tigger to “SIT DOWN!” I remembered how little I took my own advice about adjusting a homeschooling approach for kids with ADHD.

And I wanted a second chance, a do-over, so I could relax and enjoy homeschooling along with my children.

2. The public school schedule did not work for us.

For kids who’d been homeschooled from birth, getting up every morning at 6:25 a.m. was a real struggle. For a mom who’d homeschooled her kids from birth, getting out of the door by 7 a.m. every morning was a real struggle. But the morning chaos had nothing on what happened in the evenings.

When we homeschooled, evenings were for family time. We’d relax, prepare for our weekly congregation meetings together, have dinner, and let the kids play before bed. Once they were in public school, though, afternoons were a flurry of snacks, homework, school projects, papers for me to sign, hurriedly rushing through our meeting preparation, and finding something to throw in the oven for dinner. After dinner, it was time to rush everyone off to bed so they could get up at 6:25 a.m. all over again.

We all hated what happened to our evenings. It really started to erode our sense of togetherness.

3. My kids wanted to come back home.

Most of all, the kids wanted to come back home. They missed the freedom of learning we had when they were homeschooled. Sometimes I’d pick them up from school and the first thing out of their mouth would be “Can we go back to homeschool?”

I’d hear them talk with each other about field trips we’d taken, lessons we’d covered, and crafts we’d made together. It made me realize how much they enjoyed learning at home, even though they gave me a hard time occasionally. 😉

So that’s why I’m returning to homeschooling!

5 Simple Activities for Early Readers

April 28, 2015 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

Welcome to another edition of the Laugh and Learn linkup! This week, we’re sharing our favorite features from last week and extending an opportunity to share even more parenting and homeschooling posts on four different blogs!

5 Simple Activities for Early Readers

Sometimes we can overthink teaching our kids to read. While it’s true that some children need formal instruction in phonics in order to master reading, we can do a lot to encourage them by making literacy a regular event in the home.

The great news is that you don’t need an expensive early reading program to get started! There are lots of simple ways to get kids excited about reading at an early age. Stop over at Thinking Outside the Sandbox to check out five simple activities for early readers!

Coming Back to Homeschooling

April 21, 2015 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for the Laugh and Learn Linkup! Last week, we had some great posts shared and Tina, Sarah, and I have featured our favorites below. Plus, a new blogger, Haley, is joining our linky! You can read all about her below. 🙂

I also wanted to share a post I wrote recently for The Homeschool Post, which I’m very excited about because….*drumroll*

We’re returning to homeschooling this year!!!!!

Coming Back to Homeschooling

Coming Back to Homeschooling

We began our Great Homeschool Public School Experiment in November back when I desperately needed a break from homeschooling. Now that I’m almost finished with my associate degree program, I’m definitely ready to bring our kids back home.

I cannot tell you how much I’m looking forward to homeschooling them without the added pressure of going to school or working. It’s going to be fabulous. All of it. Yes, even the sibling squabbles and the days when the kids don’t want to do their work. 🙂

This time, though, I want to do some things differently. So I wrote a post about what I’d like our new homeschooling approach to be over at The Homeschool Post. Stop over and see how coming back to homeschooling is changing my homeschooling perspective!

Bee Unit Study Ideas

March 17, 2015 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

The sun is shining outside and I’ve started sniffling, which means that pollen is in the air. And as we all know, pollen means BEES!

I’m not exactly afraid of bees, but I have what I like to refer to as “respect borne of fright”. I do NOT want to get stung, so I leave them alone. 🙂 Outside of a few basic facts, though, I really didn’t know much about bees, so I thought it would be good to compile some bee unit study ideas!

Today also marks another edition of the Laugh and Learn Linky! Be sure to check our features from last week and read even more parenting and homeschooling posts!

Bee Unit Study Ideas

Prior to this unit, the only things I knew about bees were that they made honey and that the females were in charge. 😉 But it turns out that the hive is almost exclusively female. The worker bees are females too!

Bees (aside from being terrifying on occasion) are actually pretty fascinating. So check out these free bee unit study ideas at Year Round Homeschooling, including videos, books, and crafts, to make your bee lesson super fun!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Reluctant Writers: Writeshop Junior Review

March 9, 2015 by Selena Robinson 4 Comments

This is a conversation on behalf of WriteShop. Opinions are 100% my own.

Do you have any reluctant writers in your family? We do. Tigger is an avid reader, but a hesitant writer. I understand. I’m exactly the same way. 🙂

So I was thrilled when we got a chance to try the homeschool writing program: Writeshop Junior! It’s a comprehensive creative writing program for upper elementary kids!

Check out our Writeshop Junior review to see how the program helped us make creative writing fun!

Making Creative Writing Fun for Kids with WriteShop

One of my favorite things about the WriteShop curriculum is that literally everything is explained for you. What to print, how to assemble it, and how to teach each section. It’s super simple to use.

The curriculum has a unique way to introduce the basic concept of writing a letter. Kids can color code each section of the letter to help them remember the basics: body, date, salutation, closing, and signature.

Then we made a fun parts of a letter robot, which Tigger assembled (in order) and then colored. After that, she understood where everything goes on a letter without having to write an endless amount of letters herself. 🙂

WriteShop also includes plenty of reading work to help kids concentrate on reading good literature. I always feel that grammar is learned by lots and lots of reading. Since Tigger loves books, she found the reading logs and took off running! (The book she read for this assignment was “Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One” by Judy Blume.)

I’ll tell you – there’s no better sound than hearing your child ask, “Can I go and read so I can complete my reading log, Mama?” That’s the sound of a bookworm developing!

Another part of WriteShop that both Tigger and I loved was the Grammar Folders. All of the templates (and assembly instructions) are provided for you. And they are a great way for kids to get involved in their own lessons and take responsibility for studying.

Whenever Tigger was confused about when to use which quotation mark, she could just consult the folder herself for a quick reminder. The folder templates even come with detachable bookmarks!

After a few weeks of introductory work, it was time to actually begin creative writing! Since the program opens with such a gentle introduction to the concept, though, Tigger was ready and not overwhelmed at all!

As we got further along into the program, the assignments became longer, which I thought was a great thing. During Unit 3, Tigger got to use several words from a noun bank to write a story based in the Amazon jungle. Here’s her story:

Maria and Julio live in Brazil. They decided to explore the Brazilian rainforest. They packed up and headed for the Amazon jungle first. They got a chance to swing on lots of vines. They packed hammocks for the nights they traveled. As they set them up, Maria pointed out a bat family flying across the night sky.

The next morning they headed for the Brazilian rainforest. Julio found a diamond. He put it in his backpack. Maria and Julio also discovered maggots on the ground. They rode a boat down a waterfall. They even picked up a tarantula! They also climbed up a tree and found a sloth!

Before they went to sleep that night, they sat up in their hammocks looking at the pictures they’d taken. They both agreed it was the best time they’d ever had!

The end.

Personally, I think it’s worthy of a Pulitzer. 🙂

We really enjoyed using WriteShop. The curriculum is a great way to motivate kids who are reluctant writers to jump in with both feet!

How to Deal with a Homeschooling Dawdler

February 3, 2015 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

Hey everyone! It’s Tuesday, time for the Laugh and Learn linky! We’ve picked our favorites from last week and we’re thrilled to share them with you all! If you’re a blogger, link up your own posts below!

I also wanted to share an article that I wrote recently for The Homeschool Post that might be of encouragement if you’re dealing with one of the possible obstacles to happy homeschooling: a dawdler.

How to Deal with a Dawdler

How to Deal with a Homeschooling Dawdler

Do you have a child who has no motivation to do his or her schoolwork? Have you spent hours trying to nudge, prod, and coerce your student into finishing his assignment? Congratulations! You’ve got a homeschooling dawdler.

I have a dawdler of my own, and I know from experience that it can be a very trying situation. This is even worse when you have more than one child, since the dawdler (who shall remain nameless) can even interfere with the other kids’ progress.

After a lot of frustration, I finally learned a few suggestions for dealing with a homeschool dawdler and I recently got to share them in an article over at The Homeschool Post. Click over to read how I deal with a dawdler in our family!

Now – on to the linky!
