Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Snowman Craft

November 13, 2017 by Selena Robinson 13 Comments

We live in the Deep South. Which means that winter is kind of a one-week deal. We do get cold weather and the occasional snow flurry, but for the most part, actual snow and ice winter only occurs every once in a while.

The few times we’ve had snow have been newsworthy affairs. The kids will just sit in front of the window and watch in amazement as it falls.

So they’ve never had the chance to make a real snowman in the yard. But we still wanted to get into the wintery spirit, so we’re sharing a new one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a coffee filter snowman craft!

Easy Coffee Filter Snowman Craft Project

This is such a fun and quick winter craft for the kids to do this year! Read on to see how to make it at home!

And for another fun craft project, don’t miss our coffee filter sleepy moose craft!

  • White basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Child-safe scissors

Coffee Filter Snowman Craft Supplies

We went with blue construction paper for the background. The black and orange pieces are for the decorations.

Making a Coffee Filter Snowman Craft

Start by gluing the coffee filter onto the center of the construction paper. We put ours toward the bottom of the center.

Then use a black crayon to draw two eyes in the upper center of the filter.

Cut out a carrot-shaped piece of orange construction paper and glue it in the center of the filter to make the snowman’s “nose”.

Cut out five rough circles of black construction paper to form pieces of “coal”. Arrange them in a semi-circle and then glue them down to make the snowman’s “mouth”.

Making a Simple Coffee Filter Snowman Craft

Time to add the top hat! Cut out a rectangular piece of black construction paper and glue it directly on the top of the coffee filter.

Then add a narrow rectangle of black construction paper to the bottom of the hat to form the brim.

Finally, use a white crayon to add a few “snowflakes” falling in the background and you’re done!

Kids might want to add their own twists to this craft by decorating the snowman’s hat, drawing a winter scene in the background, or giving him different colored eyes. You could even add long eyelashes and long hair to make a “snowwoman”!

These DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards are a perfect craft for kids to make and share with loved ones!
Make these easy DIY pop up thank you cards to share with loved ones and friends! They're easy enough for kids to make too!

Last weekend, some good friends invited our family over for dinner. We had a wonderful time with them, so we decided to have the kids make some thank you cards.

But any old thank you card just won’t do, so DIY pop up thank you cards it is!

These were such a fun project so share with the kids! And it only took a few minutes for all of us to create together! Read on to see how to make these with your family!

Easy Pop Up Thank You Cards for Kids to Make

These are wonderful for helping kids learn to show appreciation for acts of kindness or gifts they receive from friends and family. Plus, they can decorate them in their own special way!

DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards

To make these DIY pop up thank you cards, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Scrapbook paper (One for each card)
  • Printer Paper (One piece makes two cards)
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Washable Markers
  • Stickers

Pop Up Thank You Cards Supplies

Start by cutting a piece of printer paper in half. Then fold each half into halves to make two separate cards.

We ended up making three, so we used a piece and a half of printer paper.

Making Slits for a Pop Up Thank You Card

Use the scissors to cut narrow slits into the fold of the printer paper.

You’ll need to make two cuts for each pop-up frame you want. We wanted to make three pop-up frames, so we made six slits.

Making Pop Up Thank You Cards

Push the slits back through the paper and crease them to make stand-up frames. These will be the base of your pop-up pictures.

Creating Pop Up Thank You Cards

Now cut out a piece of scrapbook paper to fit the size of your printer paper card.

Glue the back of the scrapbook paper to the outside of the printer paper. That way, the scrapbook paper patter will appear on the outside and the pop-up frame will appear on the inside.

(Note: It works best to fold the scrapbook paper in half first. That helps it fit to the printer paper better when you glue them together.)

Making Pop Up Thank You Cards from Scrapbook Paper

Since our scrapbook paper was patterned with lovely butterflies, we decided to cut out some of the small butterfly pictures and use them for our card.

Before gluing them down, we cut the pictures out and placed them on the card to make sure they’d fit.

DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards

Then we just glued the pictures to the frames and added a handwritten thank you message.

Folded Pop Up Thank You Card

All folded up. Look how pretty it is!

DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards for Kids to Make

Our younger kids wanted to make some cards too. They used stickers to decorate their pop-up frames so that they would “stand up” when opened.

Making DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards with Kids

All we have left to do is hand them out to brighten someone’s day!

How to Make DIY Pop Up Thank You Cards

These would be a wonderful way for children to show gratitude to family members, friends, teachers, neighbors, and more at any time of year!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Dog Craft

October 24, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Growing up, we had a little toy poodle named Misty. She was grey all over and my mother, who was a dog groomer, always cut her hair so that she’d have a little puff at the top of her head. She usually wore a blue collar.

Our kids have only asked for a pet a few times so far (thankfully), and I’ve managed to divert them each time. I am so not ready to have a pet and four children right now.

But when we got ready to make a new one of our coffee filter crafts for kids, I was totally open to making a coffee filter dog craft. See how we did it below!

Easy Coffee Filter Dog Craft for Kids to Make

If your kids enjoy this project, try some of our other animal coffee filter crafts, including our coffee filter owl, coffee filter cat, and coffee filter moose!

  • White basket coffee filter

Simple Coffee Filter Dog Craft

I went with a blue construction paper background because it makes it easier for the colors to stand out. But you can use any color you like.

Coffee Filter Dog Craft for Kids

Start by using a black crayon to draw two eyes in the top center of the coffee filter.

Making a Coffee Filter Dog Craft

Add a light brown circle over one eye (to make a spot) and then color the rest of the coffee filter dark brown.

Coffee Filter Dog Craft Project

Color both areas in completely.

Now add an upside down triangle for the nose.

Draw a mouth by making two curved lines that come down from the nose in either direction.

Simple Coffee Filter Dog Craft for Kids

Now it’s time to add some ears! We drew two floppy ears in brown crayon and then colored them in with a brown marker.

Then we decided to add a few whisker freckles on each cheek.

Making a Simple Coffee Filter Dog Craft

And a few bones for the background and we’re done!

This was a fun and simple craft that only took a few minutes. Plus, it’d be a great fit for a unit about dogs, pets, or even family (if you have a pet).

This easy coffee filter turkey craft is a neat farm project to make with kids!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

October 10, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

I had my very first encounter with a wild turkey not too long ago. I knew that they lived down here in the South, but I had yet to lay eyes on one.

Turns out – they’re huge! In fact, I initially thought that the one I saw was a vulture until we got right up on it. It was not a vulture. It was an enormous turkey and I was terrified. (Okay, I was in my car, but terrified nonetheless.)

So it’s clear that I have a lot more to learn about turkeys. And that’s why I thought the next one of our coffee filter crafts for kids should be a coffee filter turkey craft!

Coffee Filter Turkey Craft for Kids to Make

This was such a fun project to make. It’ll be perfect for kids to create this fall! And it’d go well with some of our other farm-themed crafts, including our farm paper bag puppets and our coffee filter pig craft!

If you like this craft, check out our list of farm books to share with the kids too!

This easy coffee filter turkey craft is a neat farm project to make with kids!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

To make this coffee filter turkey craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • White basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Crayons

Coffee Filter Turkey Craft Supplies

To start, flatten out the coffee filter as best you can.

Making a Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

Fold the bottom fourth edge of the filter under to make a sharp crease.

Coffee Filter Turkey Craft Project

Cut the bottom fold off so that the coffee filter has a flat bottom edge. This will be the turkey’s “feathers”.

Use a brown crayon to color a kind of sunburst design. The goal is to have alternating brown and red feathers. So leave enough space between the brown lines to add red next.

Coffee Filter Turkey Craft for Kids

Like so. When you’re finished, you can color in the rest of the bottom with a solid red. You could also use yellow or orange colors if you wanted.

How to Make a Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

Fold the brown piece of construction paper in half, then fold it in half again to make fourths. Cut out one of the fourths. You’ll cut the turkey “body” from this piece of paper.

Easy Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

Place the colored coffee filter in the center of the large piece of construction paper and glue it down. Cut a rounded cylinder shape (like a silo) out of the small brown piece of construction paper. Glue it on the center of the coffee filter, lining up the flat edges of both the filter and the paper.

Making a Coffee Filter Turkey

Time to give our turkey a face! Cut two small circles out of white paper. Use a black crayon to draw eyes on them. Glue them to the top of the turkey’s “body”.

Cut out a small triangle-shaped piece of paper and color it orange. Glue it onto the turkey’s face to form the beak. Then use a black crayon to add a smile.

Fun Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

Something seemed to be missing, so we added the turkey’s “waddle” by cutting out a teardrop-shaped piece of paper and coloring it red. Then we just glued it next to the beak.

Simple Coffee Filter Turkey Craft

All our turkey needs is some feet and he’s good to go!

Fun Coffee Filter Turkey Craft for Kids

And we’re done! He’s definitely a lot nicer than the wild turkey I met that day.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

September 12, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

Whenever I take my kids to the zoo, one of the first animal exhibits they want to see is the elephant pit. At our local zoo, there are three elephants and, over the years, we’ve spent hours standing there watching them as they eat, walk, bathe, and perform…uh…other bodily functions. (It’s nature!)

As we were thinking about some new coffee filter crafts for kids we could make, we hit upon a coffee filter elephant craft! So that’s what we made. And it was such a fun project I wanted to share it!

Easy Coffee Filter Elephant Craft for Kids

This would be a perfect craft to make when you’re learning about zoo animals, the African savannah, or even Asia! Plus, kids can make their own wild animal collection by adding our coffee filter moose craft or our coffee filter owl craft! Read on to see how we made this cute elephant craft.

If you want to teach the kids about zoo animals, be sure to check our our printable zoo animal flashcards too!

Take a trip to the zoo with this cute coffee filter elephant craft for kids!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

To make this coffee filter elephant craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Two white basket coffee filters
  • Crayons
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Child-safe scissors

Coffee Filter Elephant Craft Supplies

As you can see, this craft only takes a few supplies, so you won’t need to make a store run. Unless, of course, you’re actually out of coffee. 😉

How to Make a Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

Color one of the filters gray and then glue it to the center of a piece of construction paper. We used yellow, but any light color will work. (You want the details you add with the gray crayon later to show up well.)

Elephant Coffee Filter Craft

Use a black crayon to draw two eyes at the top center of the filter.

Coffee Filter Elephant Craft Project

Now we’re going to pause to make the trunk. Use the gray crayon to color in half of the other coffee filter.

Making a Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

Cut the gray half off of the filter and discard the uncolored part. Now use the scissors to cut the center half-circle out of the gray filter. Keep the outer crimped ring.

Easy Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

Glue one end of the crimped ring to the center of the filter you glued down. Now your elephant has a trunk!

Simple Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

Lift up the trunk to draw a smile on the elephant’s face. Ours is a happy elephant, of course. You can draw the smile on first and then glue on the trunk, but I prefer to glue the trunk on first because it helps me center the smile. Either way. 🙂

Fun Coffee Filter Elephant Craft

Now use the gray crayon to outline a large ear on either side of the elephant’s face.

Simple Coffee Filter Elephant Craft for Kids

Use a pink crayon to color in a smaller half-circle on the ears, then color the rest in with the gray crayon. At this point, I felt we were done. But then I remembered that the elephants we always see at the zoo have very, very long eyelashes.

Making a Paper Elephant Craft for Kids

So we added some of our own!

Cute Coffee Filter Elephant Craft for Kids

And now we’re done with our coffee filter elephant craft!

This was a blast to make! And the kids will love picking up the picture and making the trunk “wiggle”.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Owl Craft

September 5, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

A few years ago, we took our kids to a live birds of prey show. During the performance, we got to see several kinds of owls swoop right over our heads! It was my first time being up close to these animals and it was incredible. I had no idea that owls could be that big! Or that beautiful!

Since then, we’ve been learning more about these amazing animals. So I thought that it would be fun to add a new project to our collection of coffee filter crafts for kids: a coffee filter owl craft!

Cute Owl Craft for Kids

This craft is really easy and simple to customize. Kids can use any color they want and add the details they like: feathers, beak, wings – even horned tufts!

If the kids enjoy this project, learn more about these animals with our list of beautiful owl books for kids!

Start by outlining two eyes toward the top of the coffee filter. Be sure to leave the whites uncolored.

Use a tan crayon to outline two half-circles on either side of the coffee filter. These will be the folded “wings”.

Cute Coffee Filter Owl Craft

Draw a triangle in the center below the yes using the bright yellow crayon. Then color in the rest of the filter with a brown crayon.

When you’re finished coloring, the wings are all you’ll have left to do.

Making an Owl Craft for Kids

Now use the tan crayon to color in the wings.

Let’s add a few details: We used a black crayon to draw plumage on the belly. Then I used the same brown crayon that I used to color in the body to add talons and horned tufts.

Super Cute Printable Farm Paper Bag Puppets

August 28, 2017 by Selena Robinson 16 Comments

When my kids were small, they all loved the petting zoo.

Between watching the chickens run around, petting the goats and baby lambs, and seeing the pigs root in the mud, there was so much for the kids to see!

Our youngest child still loves the petting zoo and she’s not alone!

Kids just love farm animals, which is why farms are such a popular topic for early childhood education units.

Farm Paper Bag Puppets

This year, our youngest child is working on reading more picture books and we started with the book Big Red Barn.

To help her with learning to recite stories, I made up some printable farm paper bag puppets so she could reenact parts of the story.

And I’m sharing them with all of you today!

Farm Animal Paper Bag Puppets

Read on to see how you can get these cute puppet printables free!

And if you want to share more farm activities with the kids, try our farm animal flashcards or our easy farm shoebox diorama craft!

These adorable farm animal paper bag puppets are such a fun way to learn about barnyard animals with the kids!

How to Assemble the Printable Farm Paper Bag Puppets

To make these farm paper bag puppets, you’ll need the following: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Printer (with ink)
  • Printer paper
  • Brown paper lunch bags (One per puppet)
  • Crayons
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Liquid glue
  • A copy of our free Farm Paper Bag Puppet printables (Details below)
  • Pick up a copy of Big Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown to make this a storytime activity!

Printable Farm Puppet Faces

First, you’ll need to print the paper bag puppet faces out.

Farm Puppet Printables

Give the kids some crayons and let them color them in!

We did traditional farm animal colors, but let the kids use whatever colors they want! If they want to make a purple cow, so be it.

Farm Paper Bag Puppet Printables

After you color in the puppet faces, use a pair of child-safe scissors to cut them out as one piece each.

Making a Farm Paper Bag Puppet

Flip a paper bag upside down so that the bottom is at the top. Leave it folded.

Then spread liquid glue over the folded bottom. That’s where you’ll paste the puppet face.

Making a Pig Paper Bag Puppet

Stick the puppet face on the bag bottom and hold it down to glue it securely.

Making a Farm Paper Bag Puppet for Kids

Cut another piece of printer paper in half and color it to match the puppet face.

Then glue it onto the paper bag body directly under the puppet face. Be sure to flip the bottom up so that you can fit the paper onto the bag.

Completed Pig Paper Bag Puppet

When you’re done, the puppet should look like this.

How to Use the Farm Paper Bag Puppets for Storytelling

DIY Farm Paper Bag Puppets

Repeat the process with the other puppet printables to make a cow puppet, a chicken puppet, and a pig puppet.

Since we were reading Big Red Barn, we wanted to make one of each.

Using a Paper Bag Animal Puppet

But you could also print three pig puppets to go along with The Three Little Pigs or print several cow puppets to go with Click, Clack, Moo.

There are plenty of great children’s books about farms to use these with!

Making a Paper Bag Puppet

To make your puppets “talk”, just have the kids put their hands inside the bags and place their fingers into the folded bag bottom (the same place where the face is).

They can move their fingers up and down to make each puppet speak!

Playing with a Farm Paper Bag Puppet

Using lunch bags is the easiest way to make sure that the bags will fit your little ones’ hands.

But if you want to make adult puppets, you might want to get bags that are a little bit bigger.

Playing with a Pig Paper Bag Puppet

“Oh, Mr. Pig, you’re so funny!”

These were so much fun for storytelling! And they’re great for pretend play too!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Pumpkin Craft

August 17, 2017 by Selena Robinson 1 Comment

This year is just moving right along, isn’t it? August is halfway gone and we’re looking at September. Wow. Now is the right time to start planning our fall crafts and activities for the kids, and that’s why I’m sharing a brand new one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a cute coffee filter pumpkin craft!

Kids can make this craft with very little help, if any at all! While we made ours with traditional colors, if the kids want to make a purple pumpkin or a gold pumpkin, who’s to stop them?

Fun Coffee Filter Pumpkin Craft for Kids

This would be a great addition to a fall unit, a farm unit, or a harvest unit! Be sure to share some great fall books for kids along with this activity too!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Pig Craft

August 10, 2017 by Selena Robinson 5 Comments

Do you remember the first time you ever visited a farm? I went to a dairy farm on a class field trip in first grade and I was so disappointed. Cows are cool and all, but I wanted to see the pigs!

Kids are huge fans of pigs. I think it has something to do with the fact that they’re allowed to be as messy as they want to be. They don’t have to wipe their faces after eating. They don’t have to take a bath – at least not with soap and water. And they always look blissfully content. (Actually, I think I might envy them a little as an adult!)

So I wanted to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a coffee filter pig craft!

Simple Pig Coffee Filter Craft

This is a really fun and simple craft to make, so it’s perfect for younger children.

If the kids like this one, they might also enjoy our Coffee Filter Cat Craft or our Coffee Filter Moose Craft!

To make this coffee filter pig craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided here for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper (I used brown)
  • Crayons
  • Glue stick
  • Pink marker (I like Mr. Sketch. Kids love the scents!)

Pig Coffee Filter Craft

One of the reasons this is a good craft for littles is because there’s no cutting involved. They can use the construction paper and coffee filter as is. Simple!

Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Start by drawing the pig’s eyes. Leave the whites uncolored so they’ll show up well later.

Easy Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Then color the entire filter pink and glue it onto the center of the construction paper.

Easy Pig Coffee Filter Craft

Draw an oval nose with two black slits. I used a brown crayon to lightly draw the oval (just to make sure the shape was right) and then traced over it with a black crayon.

Simple Coffee Filter Pig Craft

Give the pig a smile. Pigs are happy!

Making a Coffee Filter Pig Craft

At the top corners, use a black crayon to outline the ears. Use the pink marker to color them in. (The pink crayon doesn’t really show up on brown construction paper.)

Add a few polka-dots and you’re done!

“That’s all, folks!”

Okay, that was really corny.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

August 1, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

When the boys were younger, one of their favorite episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine was “James and the Red Balloon”. This was one of the episodes in the classic series. The one with the toy trains.

They used to say that they wanted to fly in a hot air balloon. And I’d say, “Yeah, maybe one day.”

Well, until then, I thought they’d like to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids – a fun hot air balloon craft! That way, they can get a tiny version of their flying-in-a-hot-air-balloon fix and I won’t have a heart attack worrying about them. Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Easy Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

This was a really fun craft to make. Kids may need a little help shaping their balloons, but after that, they’re good to go!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

To make this coffee filter hot air balloon craft, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • One piece of blue construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Kids’ safety scissors

Making a Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

To get started, use your hands to flatten out the coffee filter as best you can. Then decide what colors you’d like to use to color it.

Coloring a Hot Air Balloon Craft

I wanted to make a cheery balloon, so I went with yellow and red-violet for contrast. But the kids can use any colors they like.

Take your contrasting color and draw a design on the coffee filter.

Creating a Coffee Filter Hot Air Balloon Craft

Then color it in.

Decorating a Hot Air Balloon Craft

Color the rest of the filter with your main color crayon.

Easy Hot Air Balloon Craft for Kids

Now it’s time to shape the balloon! Take the safety scissors and, starting from the bottom center, cut a modified funnel shape.

What you’re looking for is a small opening at the bottom that widens to the full dome shape at the top. It might take a few tries to get this right, but it’s okay. We’re just crafting here. 🙂 To make it easier, flip the filter over and trace this shape in pencil for the kids to cut out.

Simple Hot Air Balloon Craft

Now, use a brown crayon to draw the passenger basket hanging from the bottom.

Use a white crayon to add a few puffy white clouds in the sky and you’re done!

What’s more fun than cupcakes?

*thinking*

*still thinking*

Yeah, I got nothing.

Cupcakes are easily the most fun thing ever – especially for kids. Which is one reason why I’ve been using cupcakes as a theme in several of our learning packs lately. Piglet has loved them all!

So for our newest craft, I wanted to try a giant coffee filter cupcake craft that she’d enjoy making.

Easy Peasy Coffee Filter Cupcake Craft

This is a really simple craft to make with toddlers or preschoolers. It only takes a few minutes! And it’s a great fit for a cupcake unit if you add our cupcake letter matching activity and cupcake playdough mats!

Read on to see how to make this with your little ones! And be sure to check out some of our other coffee filter crafts for kids, including an easy coffee filter baseball!

Now glue the “cupcake top” in the center of a piece of construction paper. Try to place it towards the top to leave room for the cake bottom.

Now use a brown crayon to draw an inverted triangle to form the cake. Then color it in. (Afterward, I went over the brown with a dark brown colored pencil – just to make it look more like a browned cake.)

Then use a purple colored pencil to draw a few sprinkles on top of the cupcake!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Emoji Crafts

June 20, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Emojis are everywhere these days! They’re on our phones, in our emails, and even on Facebook! So for our newest set of coffee filter crafts, I thought we’d add some fun and simple coffee filter emoji crafts!

I have to admit: I was an early resister of emojis. I’m an English major and I believe strongly in the value of language to express feelings. I mean, a emoji with hearts for eyes isn’t quite the same as saying “I’m crazy about you!”

But when it comes to texting or reacting to things online, I have to say that emojis are pretty convenient. I guess the only time to really be nervous is if one of my kids holds up a picture of an emoji instead of actually answering one of my questions.

These fun coffee filter emoji crafts are so easy to make with kids!

If you and the kids enjoy making these little guys, be sure to check out some of our other crafts, including our cute coffee filter cat craft. Or get a list of projects to keep them happy all summer from our roundup of super easy, super fun summer crafts!

Be sure to check out the video tutorial and grab the printable instructions too!

Kids will love making these easy coffee filter emoji crafts!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Emoji Crafts

To make these coffee filter emoji crafts, you’ll need the following: (Affiliate links are provided for convenience. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Three white basket coffee filters
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick

Simple Emoji Coffee Filter Craft

Start by flattening out each coffee filter. Use a bright yellow crayon to color the entire filter. Then glue it onto the center of a piece of colored construction paper.

Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

To make the sunglasses emoji, draw a smile with a black crayon along the bottom edge of the filter’s inner circle line. Be sure to darken it so that the smile line really shows up.

Easy Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

Sketch the top of the sunglasses by making a curved line across the bottom of the filter’s top third. Think of drawing the profile of a bird in flight to help you make the line correctly.

Simple Coffee Filter Emoji Craft

Then, just draw diagonal lines down toward the center from the edges. Draw straight lines across the bottom and diagonal lines up toward the top line to make the outline of the sunglasses. Color them in and you’re done!

Simple Coffee Filter Emoji Craft for Kids

To make the love emoji, sketch the two heart eyes with a red colored pencil. You want them to appear at an outward angle from each other. Then sketch an open smile with a black pencil.

Keep the expression centered by using the inner circle line of the filter as your “boundary” for the face.

Easy Coffee Filter Emoji Craft for Kids

Now, color in both of your heart eyes. This is also a good opportunity to even them out if they seem a little off or crooked.

Love Emoji Craft for Kids

And then color in your smile to wrap it up!

Emoji Coffee Filter Craft

The winking emoji is probably the easiest. Draw a thick half moon shape toward the bottom of the inner filter circle and color it in with a black crayon.

Draw the highest eyebrow at the outer left edge of the filter’s inner circle. Then add an oval eye about halfway between the eyebrow and the smile.

Draw the lower eyebrow at a point midway between the height of the highest eyebrow and the open eye. Then add the closed eye as a smaller version of the lower eyebrow. Finito!

These would be so cute to hang on the wall! Or to fold up and send as sweet cards to friends and family.

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

June 8, 2017 by Selena Robinson 16 Comments

Solar eclipses are an extremely big deal. I remember seeing one when I was about 11 and it was the most fascinating phenomenon I have ever had the privilege to witness. It was the middle of the day, but it suddenly got darker and darker until it was basically night.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. So I had to look it up in the encyclopedia (remember those?) to find out what actually happened. That’s when I learned about the awesomeness of solar eclipses.

So when I learned that those of us in the Northern Hemisphere were going to get a look at a solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, I got super excited and decided to make another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids: a simple coffee filter solar eclipse craft with my little ones!

Simple and Fun Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft for Kids

This easy coffee filter craft is a great activity to share as part of a solar system unit study or as a fun summer craft! (By the way, check out the video tutorial for a look at this project in action.)

Read on to see how to make this yourself! And, if your kids enjoy this project, check out this All About the Solar System printable pack for more ways to learn about our galaxy!

This fun coffee solar eclipse craft is a wonderful outer space activity for kids!

What is a Solar Eclipse?

If you’d like to learn about what a solar eclipse actually is, here’s a great video that explains the basics to kids.

If you’re wondering when is the next total solar eclipse for North America, it will come around on April 8, 2024. So we have a bit of a wait.

The next Southern Hemisphere total eclipse will occur on July 2, 2019. Cross-continent road trip, anyone?

In case your kids have never seen one, here’s what a solar eclipse can actually look like.

Solar Eclipse

Since the moon is passing between the sun and the earth, we usually get to see a blackened circle with a white ring of light around the outside – the sun’s rays glowing around the shape of the moon.

That’s what we’re going to recreate with this easy craft!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

To make this solar eclipse craft, you’ll need the following supplies: (This post contains affiliate links. For details, see our Disclosure Policy.)

  • Two white basket coffee filters
  • Construction paper (We used a black sheet of construction paper.)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons (You’ll be using a black crayon and a white crayon for this. You could also use colored pencils if you prefer.)

Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft

Start by gluing one of the coffee filters onto a piece of black construction paper. Leave this one white to form the “sun” part of the eclipse.

Be sure to turn the paper horizontally and glue the white filter at one short end.

Easy Solar Eclipse Craft

Now use a black crayon to color the other coffee filter black. This will form the “moon” part of the eclipse.

Coffee Filter Solar Eclipse Craft for Kids

Glue the black coffee filter onto the construction paper, overlapping the white filter to show the eclipse in progress.

Solar Eclipse Craft for Kids

Use a white colored pencil to draw the bright “rays” of the sun emanating from behind the eclipse as the moon approaches.

Simple Solar Eclipse Craft for Kids to Make

Finally, draw a few stars on the darkened side.

Simple Solar Eclipse Craft

And we’re done!

Fun Solar Eclipse Craft

For a project that only took five minutes, this solar eclipse craft was a great outer space project for the little ones!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

May 25, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

We’re on a roll with our coffee filter crafts, so I thought why not add a little “rock” to our roll with a fun coffee filter vinyl record craft!

My parents had a record player for a while and I vividly remember the small collection of records that used to stand against the wall behind the stereo in our living room. Sometimes my brother and I would sneak and look at them. (We weren’t supposed to touch them, because they could be scratched so easily. Also, because my brother was really into hip hop and we would probably have used them for mixing.)

But my kids didn’t have the slightest idea what a record was. When they saw one for the first time, they said “Wow! That’s a big CD!” Obviously, we needed to go back and provide some music education.

Cute Vinyl Record Craft for Kids

This was a really fun project and it would be a nice fit for lots of units. If you’re studying about musical cities, such as Nashville or Detroit, this would be a good craft. Or if you’re learning the history of the blues, rock and roll, or rap, this craft would be fun for kids to make. Or you could just make it because it’s neat!

If you like this project, be sure to try some of our other easy art ideas for kids, including our coffee filter basketball craft or our coffee filter sailboat craft!

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils
  • One white binder reinforcement sticker

Simple Vinyl Record Coffee Filter Craft

Start by flattening out the coffee filter. Then use a glue stick to glue it onto the center of a piece of construction paper.

Vinyl Record Coffee Filter Craft

Use a black crayon to draw a light circle around the center. Color from the circle outward to shade in the outer circle of the filter. Leave the center white (for now).

Vinyl Record Craft for Kids

Use a light color for the center circle. I used teal, but any color that’s light enough to write on will work. This will be the “record label”.

Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

Stick a binder reinforcement sticker in the center. Use a pencil or another sharp object to drive a hole through the middle of the sticker to make the “hole” for the record player.

Easy Coffee Filter Vinyl Record Craft

Add a title for your record with a colored pencil! Ours is called “#1 Hit” by the world-famous record company Top Records. Hasn’t everyone heard of them? 🙂

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Sailboat Craft

May 18, 2017 by Selena Robinson Leave a Comment

It’s summer and that means it’s time to hit the high seas! Well, as close to the high seas as we get in the South….lol.

I’ve been on a motorboat before, but outside of that, I haven’t been on a boat at all. The notion of sailing out into the ocean with nothing solid underneath my feet makes me a tad…nervous.

But with this easy coffee filter sailboat craft, even sea-scary people like me can go sailing! And this is such a fun ocean-themed craft for kids to make along with parents!

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons
  • Colored pencils

Sailboat Coffee Filter Craft

Start by cutting the coffee filter in half. Then cut a little curve out of the center to form a half-moon shape. This will be the boat.

Cut the other half of the coffee filter in half again. Use one piece (a quarter of the whole filter) as the sail.

Coffee Filter Sailboat Craft

Color the half-moon piece (the boat). I used bright yellow to make a boat that would stand out against the waves. But feel free to use any color you like.

Coffee Filter Sailboat Craft for Kids

Glue the boat and the sail onto a piece of construction paper. Be sure to glue the sail a bit higher than the top of the boat.

Easy Coffee Filter Sailboat Craft

Use a crayon or colored pencil to draw the pole that connects the sail and the boat.

Now add a few sea details! Use colored pencils to draw a few waves, clouds, and seagulls!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I am not the craftiest mom. I like to knit and sew, but I usually take those interests as opportunities to get a break from being mom. Crafting with kids does a real number on my patience.

But it’s worth it to make crafts with children. It teaches them to produce their own artwork, it helps them to improve fine motor skills, and it helps me to become a more patient mom – something I desperately need.

I’ve been working on adding more crafts into our kids’ lives. For me, that means looking for the simplest, easiest projects I can find – especially with four kids getting involved!

And that’s why I’ve rounded up this list of 50 easy summer crafts for kids! These are all summer-themed, so they’re a great fit for any summer unit studies you’ll be doing! Plus, there are ideas for kids of all ages, including summer crafts for preschoolers and summer crafts for tweens!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Baseball Craft

May 11, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Sometimes I get an idea for a post that is so, so simple I fear it may not be worth sharing.

That’s how I kind of feel about this craft.

I try to keep all of my craft projects really simple for moms that are not so crafty (like me), but this one takes “really simple” to a whole ‘nother level.

This coffee filter baseball craft is so simple it’s ridiculous. It is truly the easiest craft I think I’ve ever done.

But – it might be helpful if you’re rushed for time, looking for an evening time filler, or if you have a group of kids you’re trying to entertain.

So I’m sharing it. I hope your kids love it!

And if they do, be sure to try this bouncing basketball coffee filter craft or this coffee filter sun craft for more easy peasy coffee filter craft ideas!

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Colored pencils
  • Construction paper
  • Glue stick

Easy Coffee Filter Baseball Craft

Start by flattening out the coffee filter and gluing it to a piece of construction paper.

I decided to use green, because I want my baseball to look like it’s lying on the grass.

I used a pencil to draw a curve lightly at each end of the filter.

I could have just winged the stitch lines, but as I mentioned earlier, I’m not the most crafty mom and I could easily have messed it up.

Then I got a red colored pencil and added the baseball “stitches” along the right side.

I used my pencil curve as a guide and drew the “V” shapes in the center of the line.

Like so. Now for the other side!

Did you know that the stitches on a baseball run in opposite directions? I didn’t notice until I got ready to make this craft.

But on one side, the stitches run upward and on the other side, they run downward.

So, make sure you draw your stitches running in opposite directions.

Or you could just ignore that little detail and let the kids draw them however they like. After all, this is an easy craft, right?

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Moose Craft

May 4, 2017 by Selena Robinson 2 Comments

Have you ever gotten to see a moose up close? Down here in the South, we don’t have them. It’s just too hot. (Shucks, it’s too hot for me sometimes, so I don’t blame them.)

But they are lovely, regal animals, especially when they’re adults and they have a full set of antlers. Although the small ones with the fuzzy antlers are cute too. 🙂

Since we’ve been busy making coffee filter crafts for kids over the past couple of months, I thought a coffee filter moose craft would be a neat addition! Read on to see how we made this sweet sleepy moose!

  • One white basket coffee filter
  • Glue stick
  • Construction paper
  • Crayons

Making a Coffee Filter Moose Craft

Start by flattening out the coffee filter with your hands. Sometimes it’s good to rest a book on it overnight to get it to lie a little flatter.

Color the entire filter brown with a brown crayon. Then glue it to a piece of construction paper. Try to place the filter in the center but toward the bottom. You need to leave room for the antlers on either side.

Use a black colored pencil to draw two closed eyes toward the top of the filter.

Now add a moose’s snout.

And a teeny smiling mouth. I know I’m happy when I take a nap!

On either side of the moose’s head, freehand draw a few antlers. If the kids are adding the antlers themselves, you can let them draw big letter “Y” shapes or use a fork to add antlers with brown paint.

Color in the antlers and you’re done!

Coffee Filter Crafts for Kids: Coffee Filter Beach Ball Craft

April 27, 2017 by Selena Robinson 3 Comments

Summer is right around the corner! When I was younger, summer was easily my favorite season of the year. I grew up about 30 miles from the beach, so hitting the shore was my favorite pastime.

Now we live further inland. About five hours further inland. So my trips to the beach are few and far between. But that doesn’t stop me from trying to have some summer fun with the kids!

I’ve even been known to make moon sand on our driveway. Hey, at least it’s sand, right?

One of the ways we’re welcoming summer this year is by making another one of our coffee filter crafts for kids. This time, it’s a beach ball coffee filter craft!

Remember those multi-colored beach balls you’d see all over the shore as a kid? Here’s a way to make one of your own with the kids, even when the weather won’t cooperate with a trip to the beach.

If you enjoy this craft, be sure to try our coffee filter sun craft as well!

Start by using a black crayon to trace a circle around the center of the coffee filter. Then draw a horizontal line on either side of the circle.

Easy Beach Ball Coffee Filter Craft

Draw two diagonal lines inside each “half” of the filter. You should end up with six (roughly) equal-sized sections.

Then color every other section with a primary color. I went with green, blue, and red, leaving the other sections white. Glue the filter onto a piece of construction paper.

Now all you have left to do is color the center circle yellow…

and trace over all of your section lines again with a black crayon. Done! Looks like it needs a little air, though. 🙂
